Find people standing up for the anthem in pubs is as weird as the rugby crowd telling people to be quiet before a kick. Ya wouldn't do it in the sitting room of your house to why in a pub.

The 1990 team didn't sing it too well. Would rather a team of ballers than a team of singers.

I sing the anthem before all of our games when I am there. If I knew there was a camera stuck in my face, I probably wouldn't.

They are playing for a football team that represents a country, not for a country. There is a subtle difference.
Respect, or not, for a country is an entirely personal thing as what that country means to any of its citizens is different for every single one. The things that we think it should mean are nothing more than myths that we have been sold. Some based on real events that are overplayed or cheaply sold.
Maybe, for some lad born in the 21st century, singing a song about being soldiers is nonsensical, for others it isn't, but just because you see it as important to what Ireland is for you, and playing for an Irish football, doesn't mean it has to mean something to every player who does or that singing a song makes them try harder or play better. It's nonsense. |

It's nothing to do with the success we'd have on the pitch and qualifying for tournaments. It's about signing the national song and having respect for your country. It disappoints me that most of the players don't sing it. CJ Stander came from South Africa and on his first appearance for the Ireland rugby team he had the song learnt off and belted out the words. It can be done.

It should be sang at a quicker tempo than it's played by the band.

I dont think our anthem is the best from a musical perspective. If I was to compare it to ther other 6 nations in rugby, then id say it is 5th in the list ahead of only god save the queen. I like the Welsh the best.
That said, i do think it would help if the players sang it with a bit more passion in terms of getting up for the fight, or showing the opposition your passion. Think to the Ireland vs England Rugby match in Croke Park and the passion players and the fans had that day, I dont think there was any way we we going to be beaten Edited by t_rAndy - 17 Nov 2020 at 10:48am |

I think it’s a disgrace that our players don’t bless themselves anymore when they walk on the pitch. Maybe that’s why we can’t score goals. The South Americans always bless themselves and always cry singing their national anthems. Maybe it gives them a competitive advantage along with their superior technique.

Too right - Our forefathers did not fight for our freedom so that players could stand there and decide of their own free will whether they will sing or not. Disgraceful!!

Aha we have now stumbled upon football's biggest conundrum, how not to be sh*t anymore. The mighty Scotsmen of highlandry qualify for a 50% chance of qualification tournament, it can only be the singing of the anthem. Lets not look beyond the past 20 years of failure though.
