Exactly. The planning process specifically allows people who are not directly affected to make observations and challenge decisions. Otherwise what's to stop someone buying up a heap of land and then just quarrying the f**k out of the middle of it, for example. There would be no one who could challenge it then. Plus the appeals to ABP and judicial reviews to the High Court stop the sort of sleveen crooks that controlled the planning process until the 1990s from having their way. In a housing crisis, hardly anyone will object if there are plans to build 500 houses in a field without provision for shops, schools and youth clubs but you need the likes of An Taisce and, to a certain extent, environmentalists to make sure decisions are reached properly. The decision wouldn't have been quashed if the decision had been reached in the right way the first time around.

The planning system exists to make sure the entire environment is sustainably developed. I've no difficulty with it. Sure, every now and then there are decisions that maybe aren't ideal but it is certainly a price worth paying to avoid rampant and unrestrained development.

Something I see every day, whether it's people throwing smoke butts out the window or paper wrappers on the ground.

Bugs the hell out of me.

Brought my kids up the Coolock atro last week, every day somebody came and dumped a mattrass, couch, curtains, pretty much the contents of the house outside the pitch. Then somebody set fire to it.

The astro is now closed, so brought them over to the grass pitches, same thing, people dumping their household rubbish on the pitch and then the bags get opened by dogs, seagulls or something and there is rubbish everywhere.
