Football Association of Ireland chief executive John Delaney was satisfied with the draw and is already looking forward to welcoming the World Cup holders to Croke Park.
"It'll be something special with 76,000 people in the stadium," he said. "We've got Cyprus for the third time in a row but from our perspective, although we are the third seed in the group, we'll be going for the play-offs."
The Irish are currently without a national team manager following the recent departure of Steve Staunton but Delaney hopes the vacancy will be filled before February's friendly with Brazil.
Former England boss Terry Venables has been widely linked with the job but Delaney refused to go into detail.
"We've spoken to about 25 people over the last couple of weeks in terms of the type of manager we should have," he added.
"A number of people have contacted us saying they would like to have the job. There is certainly a greater level of interest this time than last.
"We've got a better squad now than 18 months ago, a better playing pool.
"Secondly we are in a better financial position this time round and are prepared to put more money on the table.
"Our preference would be to have someone in place before the Brazil game."

25 people don't mean 25 candidates, probably discussed with his mates, his missus, his fckn goldfish. What a d*ckhead.

Dont think he should have publicly come out and said we're hoping to get in the play-offs; it's more realistic than saying we're hoping to finish top but its still the wrong attitude. I still believe that if we get the right manager in that we have a chance of even pushing Italy for top spot - scotland did it and they do not have better players than us ffs - they simply played as a team with passion - we need to reignite that pride in playing for Ireland again

for fcuks sakes lads , he was just doing an interview , he is not our manager or a player , who cares what he says, makes eff all difference to our placing in the group what that clown says.
If he had said that we are going to win it then it would hardly have the italians quaking in our boots

While it would be a shocker, its not impossible we'd win the group. I generally ignore what comes out of John Delaneys mouth, because the smell of sh*te is overbearing. The man makes a lot of money for somebody who speaks very little sense.
He is a worldclass ceo, in the way poor stan was a world class manager.
