As a proud Irishman (and a man who football is by far his number 1 sport) i would have to call this our greatest sporting day ever. Bernard Dunne defies the odds and becomes the 1st Irishman in 11 years to win a world title, and the egg chasers won the grand slam for the 1st time in 61 years. Hold ur heads up high biys, days like this dont come around very often. EIRE ABU!!!!!!

+1, Great day alright but to be honest those 2 great moments yesterday wont be talked about that much in years to come where as "who stuck the ball in the english net" will always be legend.

Depends on what you're into of course. But yesterday was certainly special and a boost for the country; the Recession is now officially over Clap

Ah it was an amazing day. Obviously because football is number one to most then people would say it's not the greatest day but for some it would be. I'd like to put that question to Jimmy Magee. Personal favourites of mine apart from football are

Ken Doherty ending Hendry's consective wins and taking the world championship in 97
Jordan winning in the French GP
Steve Collins dominating the super-middleweight division this side of the atlantic
Michelle Smith winning the 3 golds and a bronze
Harrington winning a major
Harrington winning 3 majors

Now we have the 2009 Grand Slam team and Dunne defying the odds to win the World Championship in what can only be described as the fight of the year. If that fight was on PPV you would have defo got your money's worth.

Role on Bulgaria and Italy. 6 points and we would be officially out of the recession!!!

One of the greatest without a doubt and certainly up there with Stuttgart in 88 along with Roche winning the Tour de France and Harrington in the golf. There are some people on here with a serious chip on their shoulders if they can't accept what the rugby lads did yesterday was one of the greatest moments in Irish sport.
Eamonn Dunphy:"I'll tell you who wrote it, Rod Liddle, he's the guy who ran away and left his wife for a young one".

Bill O'Herlihy: Ah ye can't be saying that now Eamonn

Why is stuttgart 88 so big. If i heard about a team and their greatest moment was beating shelbourne 20 years ago i would be laughing my bollox off at them. Beating a team 1-0 and still talking about it 20 years after is very small time. Great result and all that but its a very small time attitude.

Great achievment by the rugger players yesterday but not too great that it took 61 years considering in all that time, they only had 4 teams to beat most years.

It's all about what you're into alright (but I certainly wouldn't have Michelle Smith in any reflection given her behaviour and substance assistance).  Gouldy, Stuttgart will ALWAYS rate highly because it was our first game in a major finals and to beat the Old Enemy cannot be bettered.  You are out of touch with the vast majority of Paddys, beating England at ANYTHING has to be celebrated and that's nothing to do with any Republican views I may or may not have.

For a small nation we have done remarkably well in recent years in sport, footballers, jockeys, golfers, boxers, show jumpers, athletes and now our rugby players.  It's great in the current climate we have some fookin good news to celebrate.
We'll never die, we'll never die, we'll keep the Green Flag flying high......Shamrock Rovers will never die, we'll keep the Green Flag Flying high. 19 Leagues and 25 Cups.....

I think the Italy win was bigger considering they were considered the best in the world at that time. I was at a session a while ago with a load of Italians. I brought it up but i didnt go on like it was the greatest result in the countries history because it would of made us sound very small time.
