The same two teams in the final again, an unbelievable achievement.

Another excellent innings from Cook
Why do they persist with him as an opener
Eamonn Dunphy:"I'll tell you who wrote it, Rod Liddle, he's the guy who ran away and left his wife for a young one".

Bill O'Herlihy: Ah ye can't be saying that now Eamonn

Because he's by far there best opener....

No coach in the world wouldn't be playing England's leading all time run scorer in an ashes opener in Australia (if coaching England that is)

Has an awful habit of giving away an early wicket from time to time though

He does but only himself and Root have any sort of test experience in Australia, Stoneman played loads of grade cricket there, Vince in the big bash, no one else in England was stepping up to be opening, Jennings and Duckett especially were overlooked too easily imo as reckon Duckett would be perfect for the aussie pitches but neither scored enough to warrant selection.

Great partnership between Smyth and Marsh to get them out of trouble, I perosnally would have had Maxwell in ahead of Marsh but he has played well, Smyth showing why he's one of the best in the world.

Maxwell to mad to play in tests for most conservative coaches though I agree I'd have him in, its meant to be entertaining so I'd throw him in there for the craic.

Yeah, the aussies fought back well, fell asleep just before lunch so missed most of the action Ouch

England won the toss but put Australia in to bat.
Looks like they will regret that decision.

Aussies in a strong position in the 2nd test.

Would love to know Root's thinking behind that decision.

Both he and Anderson embarrassed themselves with comments leading up to the test.

Brilliant from Anderson and Root, certainly in with a decent chance now of levelling the series.

Think Nathan Lyon will be the difference tomorrow.

Still have no idea why Australia didnt ask for the follow on....

History against England

  • England require their highest successful fourth-innings chase in Tests. Their previous best is 332-7 against Australia at Melbourne in 1928.
  • They also have to produce the highest successful chase at the Adelaide Oval, beating the current record of 315-6 by Australia against England in 1902.
  • If England are successful it will be the 10th highest successful fourth-innings chase in Test history.
  • Only South Africa captain Dudley Nourse against Australia in 1950 has previously lost a Test after failing to enforce the follow-on.

I somewhat doubt the Australian captain knew any of these facts tbh

can see Australia skittling them out before I've got up to watch it in the morning. moeen ali is too loose a batter, I don't think too much on bairstow's bottle when under pressure. he's grand for his 100 against Zimbabwe.
