Bizarre stuff at the EPL trophy tie between Sunderland and Bradford tonight.

It ends 1 1 so Sunderland top the group but then we are treated to a peno shoot out!

Anyway back to the match itself Broadhead Alves and Younger were the pick of the Sunderland players.

Kelvin Beattie says: "Flanagan has had a very positive international break, so I’m looking for a return to his early-season club form from him."

Flanagan got his chance on the right of a back three against Italy as a direct replacement for McNair, who picked up a knock in the Lithuania game.

Aside from one wayward back pass which nearly cost us a goal, Flanagan was excellent. On that showing at least, he looked too good to be playing in League One.

I've always liked Flano (as his teammates call him) hopefully  he will be back to his best tomorrow  along with the classy Winchester and the influencial Corry Evans.

Flanagan has nine caps now, he slotted in really well the other night with Jonny Evans ( another former Sunderland player ) and Cathcart at the back against the European champions. Corry Evans was ok when he came on, Winchester is still waiting to add to his single cap ten years ago.

Tbh, barring an absolute injury crisis, I think CW's age and position will count against him ever getting a second cap.

Bara seems to prefer a 3 at the back, and even when he goes with a 4, we already have Dallas and McNair who can play RB, while Bradley is coming through.

It looks like he's already looking beyond Michael Smith (Hearts, 19 caps) who, although he's just turned 33, is a natural RB who's still done ok for us in recent seasons.

Huge win for Sunderland yesterday whilst not at their best they grinded out the win.

Aiden McGeady made the difference cool finish for his peno.

Hoffmann is a class act

Sounds like Aiden McGeady could be in the starting line up against Shrewsbury this evening.

Typical Sunderland 1 0 up against ten men and manage to blow it drawing 1 1.

Down to sixth.
