Excellent documentary on netflix called "the bridge" -

I'll paraphrase (and from memory) some guy who tried to commit suicide and was unsuccessful, he said;
"for an hour and a half I stood there trying to think of one reason to live but couldn't - as soon as I jumped I couldn't think of a reason to die."

A person reasonably close to me committed suicide a few years ago and I got close to understanding it. I truly believe it is a thought which develops and eventually devours you. It's such a private process that it is difficult for those close by to spot the signs. It really is a terrible thing all round but as I've got older I've moved totally away from the "selfish" description, there are just multiple victims.
Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get me...

Im glad you have changed your mind on the selfish description as I recall you using that term before. Its the first step one has to make to even try to understand what is going on with people in this situation

Yep, mildly ironic that believing it to be a 'selfish act' is actually quite a selfish view as it is completely devoid of empathy, an emotion those who commit to taking their own lives often have plenty of.

Going to be a hard few weeks. Lost a beautiful soul the other day.

It's really an epidemic in the country at this time.

Yeah sympathies Andy. Family I know at home buried their son today after a 9week search for his body in Lough Erne. Terrible the lack of resources being put to fight depression.

Condolences Andy, may they rest in peace.

Do people feel enough is being done to raise awareness or facilitate support of this issue in this country?

Feel the same. Left wondering what more has to happen before there is a genuine effort made to confront this issue. Every life is precious, it shouldn't take a certain no. of suicides for those in power to take notice.

Well let's do something. Let's ask the hse to start a campaign , let's get a letter done to them and offer to fundraise if needs be for charities that deal with this.

We have a depression thread on here and we all know people, I was drinking with a man when I was home in September and he is gone now, I am sure plenty people have been affected.

Will draft up a letter tomorrow and put it up here and maybe people can add to it.

Maybe raise a few quid and raise awareness for this crowd? Looks a good initiative?

Is "suicide prevention" not a bit too all-encompassing? There are many reasons people commit suicide (depression, illness, debt etc), identifying and treating them is the way to reduce suicides.

Need to tackle the causes rather than the outcome IMO.

Am really sorry to hear that but that typo made me laugh, especially as I read it as 'buttered their scone'.

Unfortunately the HSE know exactly what is going on and funds just aren't pumped in to the area, I work in drug & Alcohol field and constantly hearing about suicide . I think it be great to have a suicide charity as one of YBIGs .
What I would think we could do is maybe see about linking in with one of the organisations and raising awareness among fans. I'd be happy to get involved if anything here was decided. Great to see it being discussed openly , one thing I always ask of people when m doing training is not to use the word commit as it' makes it sound like a criminal offence and maybe just use the phrase .....X died by suicide .
Thank You Torun and Tyskie

Could never understand how people called it "selfish'?!   It is tragic indeed but sadly some people are in so much pain for a long time that it can be hell to live. Also people with medical issues see it as a painless way out. I don't condone it but I can understand it & have empathy for the person.
