agree with above.  I wonder will Kevin Kilbane be ripped to shreds if he ever becomes a crap manager.

Yes, Stan was a great player for us.  But let's be honest, the damage is done.

Think of Bryan Robson or Graeme Souness these days and what first comes to mind?  The great player or the rubbish manager?  Same with Staunton I fear.

We all know he was a bad manager

Can he not be remembered for the good things he did for his country - which far outweigh the bad?

+ Took a big payout after a dismal spell in charge. Didnt have the honesty to go when the fans wanted him out.

Can never respect the man after that.

Well said.

Too true.  After the Cyprus draw at Croker, insisted he was staying on. An utter refusal to admit anything was wrong turned a lot of fans against him.

he got a four year deal , why wouldnt he want to be paid out ?? that was delaneys fault and no one elses , stan should have been put on a one year rolling deal , its not like we beat off other clubs to sign him...

Stupid comment

Robson and souness were cracking footballers

Staunton was a great servant in the green jersey always gave his all and had a sweet left foot

So what if he wasnt cut out to be a top manager- i blame the people who hired him- no one in stauntons position would have turned the job down

If this was a club then by all means hold out for what you can get, but this is his own national team. A non profit organisation, he effectively diverted money away from the grass roots football, the same set up that gave him his chance to earn the money he did. If he had any sort of decency he should have walked and not looked for a cent,  Kevin Keegan style. Have nothing but respect for the way he left the English set up.

very unfair imo , a not for profit but not a charity. delaney should not have given such a deal and its harsh to blame stan for holding him to it

Absolute garbage
Like Milla said, he was sacked under contract. As in any other job in the world he is entitled to a pay out.

Fans do not have, and rightly so, the power to get rid of any manager

another in the long line of good players but poor managers. great servant playing for ireland, and had a go at the managers job that never worked out. at least he stuck his neck on the line, unlike some of these useless pundits
