He's returning as Ireland manager in 2022, after Stephen Kenny.
Delaney to announce it today

Like Graeme Souness or Bryan Robson, Steve Staunton is someone whose reputation as a great player has been sullied by a less that stellar management career.  You know things are bad if your name is booed when it is merely read out as an answer to a half time quiz question (Germany at Croker, 2007)

Really good player for us.  No other Irishman will probably ever play in 3 World Cups.

I really hate to see him become a figure of fun.  He was exposed as manager but you can't really blame him for taking it.

Agreed. One of the finest ever players in the green. One of the standout moments was him taking Mick's arse out of the bacon slicer in Malta, although it might have made things a touch easier for him down the line if he hadn't.
I would argue that he became a figure of fun in Orlando in 1994, long before any managerial misadventures!
