"Ireland spoke today to Paul Rowan of The Sunday Times as he nears a return - ironically around the anniversary of his Ireland exit - and he revealed the details of that call with Martin O'Neill."

Awful pity the lad is a total headbanger. A really gifted player, one of the most gifted we've produced in the past 10 years. His career has been pathetic in comparison to the levels he could have hit imo.

Stephen's Ireland Wish by Daniel McDonnell
15 January 2015 18.46 Stoke's Stephen Ireland makes his long awaited return to first team football tonight at Old Trafford against Jose Mourinho's Manchester United. It ends almost two years of injury heartache for Ireland who hasn't started a game in the Premier League since April 2015. It is understood new manager Paul Lambert will make Ireland his captain next weekend in an effort to power Stoke up the table. The mercurial playmaker who infamously exiled himself from international football back in 2007 has had a rough time of it since his meteoric rise at Manchester City under the tutelage of Mark Hughes. A highly promising career stagnated into an ever present battle with injury. But now, he wants to make up for lost time and that means a return to the Ireland fold. A source close to the player indicated Stephen's wish to get back into Martin O'Neill's plans for the upcoming September games in the newly formed Nations League. ''Stephen has been hurting over being treated like he has. It's always been his wish to play well for Ireland and play in major finals. All he wants is for Martin to make the call and ask him to come back but Martin for whatever reason has not done so and that is the most disappointing thing. I know Stephen, if the offer came, would consider returning. I think he feels Martin has frozen him out unfairly.'' |

Baldy is mentioned here
https://www.theguardian.com/football/2018/jan/19/premier-league-10-things-to-look-out-for-this-weekend Stephen Ireland’s return to Stoke’s starting XI at Old Trafford – almost three years after his last start in the league – was intriguingly timed. While he missed a couple of chances, his performance was encouraging and he was, at least, fit and willing enough to get in the right positions. It was all watched by his new manager, Paul Lambert, whose appointment by Aston Villa in 2012 led to Ireland being swiftly ostracised. Ireland appeared sporadically in the first half of the following season, but not once in 2013 before moving to Stoke, initially on loan, the following summer. “It’s important for every player to feel wanted and to be part of a family and to be honest I haven’t had that for a long, long time,” he said, after completing a permanent transfer early in 2014. While at Villa, Lambert described him as “a really talented footballer” and said that “it is up to me to get the best out of him”. He failed to do so then, and how their relationship blossoms over the next few months, starting on Saturday against Huddersfield, will be intriguing, and potentially crucial.
