They've given you bogus info. I watched the game live on RTE. One thing I remember was how good the pitch at Flower Lodge looked : it was in fantastic shape, when we were used to playing on that horrible rugby pitch at Lansdowne.

family friend works in the archive dept in RTE. He says there is no footage of that game in the archives and it was not live on tv or was there a feature on the news that night. He has found other games for me in the past so I have no reason to doubt him. That's why I started this thread. I cant even find a still image on the RTE archive and gspain does not remember it being on tv which says a lot as I think he know his history.

None of the sports photography websites afaik have any images at all of the game so it may just have been covered by local reporters for Examiner etc.

The game was definitely live on RTE. The weather was warm and sunny that Sunday afternoon and I remember that the grass was cut in a 'chequered' fashion by the ground staff, in the way that the Wembley pitch used to be. I couldn't possibly know any of this if I hadn't watched the game live.

The games against Norway and Switzerland weren't shown live, radio coverage only with TV highlights later that evening - Norway had an evening kick off midweek and Switzerland was on a Sunday afternoon, a week after the Spain game.

Game not shown live but highlight's were shown later that Sunday evening. It's really bugging me  now as to what strip we wore as I said earlier I am almost certain we wore orange. Maybe someone from Cork City FC could confirm?

Are you sure about that? I could have absolutely sworn it went out live.....I don't think I'd have a load of memories about a 0-0 game that was shown as a highlights package. Another reason that makes me think it was live was that the game was a sell out, which was a big factor for RTE in whether a home match was televised live or not.

Norway 85 as far as I know was the first kit that was really different but it was still green.I don't think we ever wore a different colour except green and white until the orange Macedonia kit.Think we wore blue in 1924.if aw did wear orange what colour were Spain in?all white?

We didn't wear orange, we wore the 83-84 green shirt with piping and the Spaniards wore their traditional red and blue. I'm guessing the green shirt that was unveiled against Switzerland simply wasn't ready for the Cork game. The hideous outfit for the Norway game was obviously intended to be our future home strip but they must have received numerous complaints.

It wasn't a sellout.  tickets were on sale on the day and it wasn't full.  Big crowd though.  However nowhere near the attendance for what proved to be the last ever football match there a year later when Liverpool came to town.

Live home games were very rare in those days and live friendlies were pretty much unheard of.

As far as I know this was the first orange jersey that Ireland ever wore. Luxembourg at home in 1987. Could that be the game you were thinking of?

No, we wore green against Luxembourg. I was at that game (we had to come from behind to win 2-1, after Luxembourg took a shock lead).

The only time we've ever worn orange was the infamous 3-2 defeat in Macedonia in the 1990s.

What I meant was that the orange jersey in the picture is the first time I recall any Irish team/player wearing an orange jersey. That was Gerry Peytons gk shirt v Luxembourg. We wore green for outfield players. Macedonia was first orange kit by outfield players.
