Ronnie in some form, was 7-0 up an about to go 8-2 up now here v Trump in the Shanghai master's, just said he's only dropped 6 frames all week prior to this match, and he should have at least got it back to 9-9 last week but missed the green when 22 points up to hand Murphy the victory

Ronnie was lucky - was 4-2 down but managed to win 6-5

He really should win this as all the top seeds are out.
He has 5 UK Championships, same as Hendry. Davis has the record with 6

Shaun Murphy (Eng) v Mark King (Eng)

Stephen Maguire (Sco) v Joe Perry (Eng)

Mark Joyce (Eng) v Ryan Day (Wal)

Ronnie O'Sullivan (Eng) v Martin Gould (Eng)

Ronnie v Murphy in the U.K. Championships final today.

Hope Ronnie wins - he first won this in 1993 as a 17 year old. Be some record to win it 24 years later.

And he has done it.

That's 18 triple crown titles. Same as Hendry.
Still thinks he needs one more Worlds to be the considered the best ever.

He would have 2 World titles to equal Hendry, but nobody really thinks he is anything other than the best ever. I'm not so sure he will win those 2 to be honest, the format doesn't seem to suit him (feck knows he complains about it often enough) and lately, Selby has gotten into his head in the longer format games.

That said, if Selby was knocked out by someone else, Ronnie would be a near automatic favourite, his dislike of the format aside, and that would probably hold true for the next 2 or 3 years.

Tis a stagnant game in a lot of ways, you mentioned Ronnie winning that tournament at 17, Hendry won the WC at 21, that kind of thing doesn't happen these days, and hasn't for more than a decade. Selby is 34, yet still thought of as one of the younger lads, as is Neil Robertson (35), while lads who have won tournaments in the past few years for the first time include the likes of Barry Hawkins (38), Stuart Bingham (41) and Mark King (43) .

The last tournament before this was won by Mark Williams (42) while Ronnie's opponent in the final Shaun Murphy is 35, but was world champion all the way back in 2005. Jimmy White beat a seeded Ali Carter in one of the earlier rounds, and he was in the WC final in 1984, no less.

Dunno what it is, is it that this generation are close to snooker perfection, so close that nobody outside the top 16 or so can get a look in for more than a decade, or is it that young players aren't taking it up any more in the same numbers? Right now, a 17 year old UK Championship winner or a 21 yr old world champion seem a long way away. I think Judd Trump and Kyren Wilson are the only 2 players under 30 in the world's top 16, and there aren't that many more in the 16 after that, so for the next 5 years, we are going to be looking at more of the same lads that have been about for the most of the past 20 years.

Yan Bingtao at 17 looks like he could be the next young player to win a major tournament. Commentators singing his praise about the hours he puts in on the practice tables and looked good in that tournament in northern ireland recently

Mark Williams has gotten off to a good start against Selby.
Really didn't like him or Mathew Stevens when they were at their height.
