Right, so we need to play Hourihane, brady and bring Ian harte out of retirement and just get them to shoooooot from all sorts.

see the Slovaks were beaten comfortably at home by the Czechs. The same Czechs that Bulgaria beat 1 zip in their last competitive game before us.

I think Slovakia, Bosnia, NI and ROI are all in and around the same level - there's no standout team in that part of the play offs.

What's the story with Marek Hamsik? I notice he wasn't in their latest squad.

Good for us that Milan Skriniar lost his place for Inter. May he start this season the way he finished the last one.

Apart from it means they had a bad result at home. Beaten by a team who themselves are no world beaters . So yeah it means jack but it’s an indication of where they are at the moment

Watched highlights of the Czech game, Slovakia were awful. OK pre season time aside you'd expect more from someone in a local derby very sloppy with their passing and little to no pressing

The Czechs absolutely destroyed them by those highlights.
17 shots to 2, 68% possession.

Were the Slovaks missing many players who we would expect to start against us?

With the two prep games now behind us, and having discovered significant weaknesses in our team/squad/style, what changes could we hope to see for this match?

Are there any great hopes who were not in the NL squad who could break into the 23 next month?
Or even get close to the starting 11?
Injuries will come to one or more of the squad so I expect changes but who would you have knocking on the door for October?

I suppose the first name is Troy but he's out for a week or two so I'd not expect much there so soon.

My hope is we see a lot of our squad, and a few who just missed out, get regular starts for their clubs so at least we can't use match-fitness as an excuse next month.

Yesterday's loss hurts but I'll remain hopeful we will be noticeably better for the next window of matches.

I wonder has Arter done enough to be in contention for Slovakia. I suppose the players have a few weeks now to make a place with their clubs. Regardless of formation we have a lot of similar quality players in midfield, it's hard to know what to do there. I rate Hourihane and think Arter is a good passer of the ball but there is a tendency for both to drift out of matches and become passengers.

I'm not sure where Hendrick fits in, he's also been a passenger for Ireland many times in recent years. McCarthy is hit and miss too. Molumby is a good player but it may be a bit early for him.

Just throwing it out there but I wonder could McClean possibly have a more defensive role in a midfield 3. His work rate and pressing is his best attribute, he can tackle. For me he is too headless going forward to start in a more attacking role. He could still be useful somewhere.

Has Hamsik retired from Slovakia? I assumed he was there main man but he's playing in China and hasn't been in recent squads.

Just looking at their squad they aren't as good as they were in previous years, not many well known names there. Although could say similar about us.

Based on what I've seen so far, 4-3-3 and the feedback from Kenny, I think the team is as follows, with only a few spots open

Randolph
Doherty*--Duffy--Egan--Stevens
Hendrick--McCarthy--Arter**
Robinson***--McGoldrick--Connolly

*or Coleman
** or Hourihane or Brady
*** or O'Dowda

This would be my starting 11.

        Randolph
Coleman Duffy Egan Stevens
Hendrick McCarthy Brady
Robinson McGoldrick Connolly

Yup - would agree with that assessment. The main issue with the midfield three you have selected above is that we won't have a specialist set piece taker and, given our well documented issues with scoring, that could be a huge problem.

He wasn't called up to the Slovakia squad because he's playing in China currently and would have to quarantine for 3 weeks after returning. He'll be called up for the playoff though.
