After a lot of thought and consideration, I have made the most difficult decision to retire from international football. It's been a great honour and privilege to play and on occasion captain the team. I shall remain a huge fan of the team as I have been all my life and I wish them every success for the future.I wish to thank all the players, managers, staff & most importantly the most wonderful fans in the world.
Finally I would like to thank my wife Jane,my 2 amazing kids and my entire family for their unwavering support over the 16 years & 125 caps

From FAI FACEBOOK
BREAKING NEWS: Shay Given has just announced his international retirement. Speaking today Shay said, 'This has been an extremely difficult decision for me to make. I have dedicated 16 years of my life to my country, and I have a great affinity with Giovanni Trapattoni’s squad. I’d like to thank the manager for his support during my time with the team. I will continue to be Ireland’s biggest fan, and wish the lads well as they embark upon their new campaign

On the FAI facebook site now also. Great servant. Pity the Euros were such a disappointment for him.

Cry

Thanks for the memories Shay Clap

Had a feeling before the Euros he'd be one of the players who would probably retire at the end of them. Westwood a more than capable successor just needs to get a move to a club where he'll get more 1st team time

What a player. Had a feeling he'd go. IMO still had at least 2 years left in him as number 1.

Won't be forgotten and may well be sorely missed in this coming campaign.

But he doesn't owe us anything.

A few of the players picked in the current squad could learn a lot from his passion and desire to represent their country.

Another one who should get some sort of a farewell game. Would be sad to think his last appearance in his Ireland Jersey was the Italy game at the Euros'
