Has done nothing to deserve a recall. Has barely kicked a ball since Euro 2012.

It makes absolutely no sense to recall a keeper who has spent the last 2 years warming the bench and then to play him ahead of 3 keepers who start every week.

A total lack of respect shown to David Forde who has carried Ireland at times in the games he has played.

The only person this benefits is Shay Given because the morale amongst the other keepers will plummet. Bringing Shay back is a mistake.

While seeing Given return would feel like a step backwards, pound for pound, I don't think our current stock of keepers possess the "game changing" ability that Given has.

He was injured in Poland, so I think it's harsh to say he was found out, etc. O'Neill better know what he's doing bringing back into the fold.

All said, we really need to start blooding a young (teens/early 20's) keeper.

Puzzled by this comeback. I fail to see what this offers us. Surely, Forde will be number one for the upcoming games?

Don't see too much of a problem. Don't rate Forde that much tbh.

This is absolutely ridiculous if true. He's too old and this "I'm only coming back if I play" business is a disgrace. You either serve your country as a starter or back-up with no conditions or get stuffed. Westwood's had a great start to the season, he should be our no. 1.

He's been over the hill for about four years and has scarcely played in two, to bring him back when we actually have a few options finally playing regularly is beyond strange. If the guarantee bit is true that makes it even worse, where's the motivation for Westwood/Forde etc. if they know Shay is nailed on to start every match.
We're decent enough..

Let it go Shay. Nobody should be guaranteed a start.

I would like to see Westwood claim the number 1. Forde is a really good shot stopper, but there is that feeling that he has a clanger in him every game.

That's the bone of contention with a lot of people. He shouldn't have been near the pitch in any of the 3 games yet he put himself first, declared himself fit and ended up making a show of himself. And now Villa are out of the league cup he's unlikely to play for them again until January in the FA Cup. What can a benchwarmer pushing 40 years of age do that the other 4 keepers named in the squad can't? This is just crazy if true.

Would rather see Eric dela Cruz in the squad ahead of Given.

Republic of Ireland under 19 international at Leeds United. Ex Ringmahon Rangers man. Would be better in the long run.

I'm not saying he is good enough to start for the senior team, that it would benefit the national team more than a recall for Shay.

2 years warming the bench
nothing in 4 years!!

FFS some of ye are mad. Played 16 times last season for Middlesbrough, keeping 10 clean sheets.
Ask any Middlesbrough fan would they take him back, now, on a 2 year deal and I can guarantee they would snap your hands off

Oh and im not saying he should be our no1. But to have him as an option is a bonus for us
