What actually happened? What made the money dry up so much in that league?
Everyone knows about the Italian Football program on Channel 4 on a Sunday afternoon, super popular league in the UK back in the 90's but then in the 00's and onwards the league just ... disappeared.

TV piracy because of the mafia apparently played a part: tv companies would not pay the big money that UK companies were willing to pay to broadcast the EPL because of the number of people who were watching on pirated, cracked boxes, courtesy of the Cosa Nostra, N'drangheta etc etc etc.
Not sure how true that is, admittedly, but it is a theory I heard elsewhere. Stadiums play a part too. The Taylor report made English stadiums the best in Europe (in terms of prawn sandwich brigade seats) for which they could charge more. A lot of Serie A stadiums haven't been renovated since before the 1990 World Cup. That's because they are largely council owned and only rented by the clubs: the massive investment in the stadiums for 1990 helped the clubs, but as they weren't renovated, and the English clubs renovated their stadiums post-Taylor and the Germans for the 2006 World Cup, they lost another income stream relative to two of the other big leagues (plus attendances fell as a result of the increasingly shabby facilities). In Spain, there are really only two big clubs competing for the best players, and both own their own stadiums, and until recently negotiated their own TV deals, which helped them become the behemoths they are. Look at Juve: they own their own stadium, they have one of the best in the country, and as a result it is full every game: there's a lesson there for the other clubs in Serie A. Outside of the top four or five in Spain, it's in every bit the same level of disarray as Serie A, at least financially. They may have decent players, but they have budgets below English Championship level. Anyway, basically, they aren't as good at making money as the Spanish behemoths or the English clubs, so they are losing out. Edited by SuperDave84 - 19 Jun 2017 at 1:16am |

SD is pretty much spot on there, especially about the stadiums. I believe there are currently 4 clubs in the entire league that own their own stadium, those being Juve, Sassuolo, Udinese, and more recently Atalanta. Plenty of clubs are talking about building new ones, mainly the 2 Milan clubs, and Roma, but f*ck all has been done there so far.
In fairness, there has been increased investment in the league recently, but as the comedians at Inter have proven so far, that means nothing if it's not planned properly

The 1990s were exciting times. The world’s best strikers – Maradona, Van Basten, Ronaldo, Gabriel Batistuta, George Weah, Hernan Crespo, Christian Vieri, Alessandro Del Piero and Marcelo Salas – took on the best defenders: Franco Baresi, Alessandro Nesta, Paolo Maldini, Giuseppe Bergomi, Lilian Thuram and Fabio Cannavaro. Artists in midfield like Manuel Rui Costa, Juan Sebastien Veron and Zinedine Zidane painted with their feet. It really was some league back then.

They're supposed to be (although they were 'supposed' to be in the stadium by now), nothing has started yet, but they have had their plans approved by the city

Borini to Milan. 1 of the more bizarre stories you'll find this window. An absolute fraud and a mercenary.
Here's what I'd imagined negotiations looked like with his agent

Hakan Calhanoglu is supposed to have a medical with Milan today. Great signing if it goes through, they've bought very well this summer (besides Borini obviously)

They sold Paredes to Zenit yesterday for a few quid too. They've brought in a right back from Feyenoord (can't think of his name at the moment), Lorenzo Pellegrini from Sassuolo, Hector Moreno from PSV, and I think they got Gonalons in from Lyon. In Monchi, they have one of the best sporting directors around, he'll sign well

I see that Donnarumma has had a 'change of heart' after being offered 100k a week by Milan. That would do it alright

Extension until 2021 signed today. Milan fans still fuming with him though over the circumstances letting Mino turn his head.

Can't say I blame them, he got way too big for his boots way too early. It'll blow over in time, but he'll get some serious stick for a while.
Douglas Costa is having a medical with Juve tomorrow, looks to be a loan deal with the option to buy later, could be a fantastic signing

100k a week and only 18 FFS Costa was brilliant in his first season at Bayern under Pep, Ancelotti just didn't fancy him
