The opening weekend of the Serie A season will not go ahead due to strike action by players in Italy's top flight. The Italian Players Union (AIC) confirmed the news on Friday morning after talks over a collective agreement regarding players' rights broke down. AIC president Damiano Tommasi said: "There will be no Serie A this weekend. We tried right up until the end, but ultimately all the talks were in vain." The dispute has rumbled on since the end of the 2009/10 season when a previous agreement expired. Strikes were twice averted at the last minute last season. The AIC has said that agreement was reached last season and it was only a matter of Serie A putting pen to paper. However, disagreement has surfaced over the interpretation of the so-called article seven concerning players who are no longer wanted by their coaches. AIC wants those players to be allowed to train with the squad until they reach the end of their contracts while the clubs want autonomy for the coaches. A further problem has followed the government's announcement of the new tax, known as the solidarity contribution, on wages over €90,000 (£79,418 ) per year. The clubs want the agreement to include a clause stipulating that the players must pay the tax, rather than the clubs. Reuters / Eurosport |

Good stuff Tribal, has seen last week that everything was agreed and would be signed off today but was weary something else might crop up to delay it further

I'd love to see it happen. Big fan of Luis Enrique. Not sure how they'll line out. Some big names mayube left out, including Totti which already happened in the EL. Steklenburg Burdisso Juan Kjaer Heinze De Rossi Gago Lamela Pjanic Totti Osvaldo Borriello Bojan Okaka D.Pizzaro Taddei Plenty of fire power anyway. Biggest problem is keeping the 'King of Rome' happy. ESPN SAT-7.45-Cesena v Napoli SUN-11am-Juve v Parma 7.45 Palermo v Inter |

Luis Enrique under pressure to lead Roma to victory against Cagliari. He has already been given the dreaded vote of confidence by Francesco Totti.

Will give the second half of Madrid-Getafe a skip for this. Then Valencia-Atletico straight after. |
