'Search Robots'?

Apologies if this has been asked before - but what the hell are these yokes?
 
If you ever go into the 'Active Users' list, a lot of the guests are called things like 'Search Robot Google' or 'Search Robot Yahoo'. Most of them have been logged into the website for upwards of 500 minutes. Can someone explain what exactly the point of these things are? I'm assuming they're collating data on websites or something, but just there I saw one of them was trying to write in one of the threads! Confused Said 'Access Denied' or whatever, but the fact they are trying to write stuff in the threads is a bit weird - are they trying to write ads like "Phone 1890 000 000 for free viagra" or sommit?

It's so the pages will show up on searches like Google. The reason why it was trying to write a message was to get that page on Google I think.

Could do with some free Viagra though.

Yeah kindof, the reason it looks like it is trying to post a reply is that it goes to all the parts of the website but gets stuck in the post reply page/box cos it can't obviously write a reply. It will eventually just leave that part and continue to crawl the other pages to index stuff.
