No it comes from radio commentary of football. Each paper used to divide the pitch into 12 squares, 6 for each half. 

When the ball went back to the keepr, it went back to square 1.

why would they divide the pitch into squares? Was it listener could visualise whrre the ball was during the game?   If so why is it a disused practice and what is wrong with saying for example" heres bobby charlton picking the ball up just inside his own half making his way up the right wing".?
