Refusing to let Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky address the Academy Awards ceremony while handing an Oscar to a documentary about Russian activist Alexey Navalny means politics and movies do mix after all, adviser Mikhail Podoliak tweeted on Monday.

“If Oscar is outside of politics how should we understand the documentary manifesto Navalny where internal Russian politics is overflowing?” Podoliak asked, “If Oscar is out of the context of the war in Ukraine [and] the mass genocide of Ukrainians, why do you constantly talk about humanism [and] justice?”

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences had turned down elensky’s request to address Sunday’s ceremony for the second year in a row now. While there has been no official comment on the matter, US media outlets reported that Hollywood wanted to “steer clear of anything political” amid concerns that giving attention to Ukraine might offend non-white people around the world.

Since the conflict with Russia escalated in February 2022, Zelensky has appeared via video link before film festivals in Cannes, Berlin, and Venice. He has also addressed the Grammy Awards and the Glastonbury music festival and virtually ‘rang’ the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange in September, among other appearances.

You are correct that social media has made debate more accessible to all and more views can be expressed, the irony is that if a person's point doesn't not agree with the Liberal group think or is even remotely perceived as a challenge to Liberal agenda that person is pilloried as a hard right, hard left,  conspiracy nut job. 

This is true on both sides,  left and right. 
Hence my point. No nuance. 

But some arguments don’t deserve parity. A prime example is Flat Earth Theory. Or those who re-hash the dangerous and debunked myths about vaccinations. Those are some of the most extreme examples, but why should a physics expert, with years of experience and the weight of thousands of years of historical evidence be expected to debate some lad who discovered the flat earth theory on Facebook?

There is no reasoned debate anywhere on flat earth bolloxology. None whatsoever. 

If you are talking about Covid vaccines, there is debate to be had on those. 

But flat earthers don't,  nor should, get any platform for that nonsense

From a vaccination point of view, I would particularly point to the Wakefield stuff. But let’s be honest, him and his fellow travellers are responsible for the upswing in general vaccine scepticism, so it essentially comes from a dishonest place. And it is interesting to note that in some of the recent peace marches around Europe, you could always spot the small number of demonstrators linking the war and covid vaccines.

100 per cent. Same loons hijack everything but that goes back to my point.
There is a debate to be had and it shouldn't be dismissed because the aforementioned loons have attached vaccines to their 'we're anti everything' agenda.

There is one 15 year old death 'highly likely vaccine related' according to irish courts. More are trying to het the truth. Probably for another thread

Completely agree with this. 

It is convenient though for those who want to completely dismiss and obstruct healthy discussion regarding vaccines (as indeed their should be with all novel medical interventions) that there are inevitably loonies among the large group who want a more open discussion. Hence, an easy labelling everyone as "flat-earther" for any view outside the pharmaceutical narrative, and not having to face up to the possibility of genuine introspection regarding the vaccine-roll out and mistakes that were made.

I used flat-earth theory as an example of something that doesn't deserve parity in debate. It is the most basic conspiracy theory, and unlike the scientific consensus, the theory crops up and down from time to time, and it now has staying power as a product of social media.

It will weaken his hand further in the international community. Although it is beyond doubt Russia will laugh it off, it will mean he won’t be able to travel as freely in Europe.
