You folks may have heard of Lech Walesa, but in the Czech Republic and neighbouring countries Vaclaw Havel was of equal stature/importance.

A sad time for the Czech nation, my condolences to his family, his friends, and to all the people in the Czech Republic.

In football terms we use the word "legend" to express our appreciation for one of our team's best players, but Vaclav Havel was a true legend to a whole nation and beyond.

On Facebook my friend Branden Brazil made this excellent observation about today’s news

What a contrast of leaders and human beings Vaclav Havel and Kim Jung Il are. One represents all the finest, noble qualities that humanity can aspire to, whilst the other manifested the very worst. One stood for love, liberty and peace, whilst the other stood for hate, control and conflict.
