Real Madrid are poised to rename their world-famous Bernabeu stadium
By Andy West Spanish football writer
Real Madrid are set to rename their Bernabeu stadium as part of a sponsorship deal with United Arab Emirates-based International Petroleum Investment Company (IPIC).
The two parties agreed their partnership, believed to be worth up to 500 million euros to the Spanish club over a period of 20 years, in October.
It includes naming rights for the Bernabeu - Real's home since 1947.
The stadium also hosted the 1982 World Cup Final.
The name the parties have settled on is thought to be The Abu Dhabi Santiago Bernabeu, although another possibility is The Cepsa (a subsidiary Spanish company) Santiago Bernabeu.
The decision will be approved by Real Madrid president Florentino Perez, who has insisted that the stadium's heritage is honoured by retaining the words 'Santiago Bernabeu' - the club's former player, manager and president who oversaw the initial construction - in the full title.
The new deal is to raise funds to renovate the stadium and increase capacity from 81,000 to 90,000.
Perez secured the sponsorship in order to raise funds for the long-planned renovation of the stadium, which is expected to be completed in 2017 and will increase the capacity to around 90,000 from its current 81,000, incorporating a retractable roof along with a number of contemporary design features.
"I am killing myself to create the best stadium in the world," Perez said at the club's annual General Assembly in September.
"If you want to do it without debt, the only possibility is that we take a sponsor's name which could give us the 400 or 500 million euros the new stadium is worth.
"We have spoken to 10 companies to see if someone is capable of attaching their name to the Bernabeu. I have said I will do [the renovations to] the stadium and I am going to do it, but I have to overcome all the difficulties."
"It's not like Britain, this is rare in Spain" - Andy West, Spanish football expert |
Unlike British clubs, including a sponsor in a stadium name is rare in Spain - currently the only top flight club to have done so is Espanyol - so this is a contentious issue for Real Madrid fans. |
Although many are opposed to the idea, there is also a general acceptance that it is a necessary move to pay for the reconstruction of the stadium, and all-powerful club president Florentino Perez generally manages to get his way. |
Real Madrid already have a strong presence in the UAE, with Dubai government-owned airline Emirates serving as shirt sponsor since 2013.
The club also have tentative plans to open a Disneyland-style theme park in the UAE, and even removed the Christian cross from its official logo in Arabic marketing campaigns to avoid offending local sensibilities.

So it's still going to be called the Bernabeu but just with Abu Dhabi at the front.

Cristiano Ronaldo: Real Madrid star 'worth at least £300m'
Cristiano Ronaldo would sell for £300m if Real Madrid decided to let him leave tomorrow, the Portuguese superstar's agent has told BBC Sport.
Jorge Mendes said the 29-year-old forward was the "best player ever" and the "best sportsman ever".
Mendes added: "You can't compare him with anybody else."
Ronaldo was voted the world's best player for a third time last month, beating Barcelona rival Lionel Messi to the prestigious award.
Asked how much he was worth, Mendes said: "Cristano Ronaldo? One billion. His buyout clause one billion, so it is one billion.
"If, for any reason, the club decide to sell him tomorrow for 300 million, someone will pay."

Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo reportedly left team-mates furious after hosting his 30th birthday bash, just hours after the 4-0 hammering against rivals Atletico.
The Portuguese held the party on the outskirts of Madrid on Saturday night, with the likes of Luka Modric, James Rodriguez and Pepe all said to be in attendance, alongside coaches Paul Clement and Fernando Hierro.
Sergio Ramos and Iker Casillas opted out and according to Marca, they are angry after seeing pictures of players singing and dancing, just hours after the humiliation at the Vicente Calderon.
However, Ronaldo's agent Jorge Mendes insists the player was far from in the party spirit and only didn't cancel due to family travelling from Portugal.

The Spanish League agreed on Tuesday to charge Barcelona after their supporters were heard singing ‘Ronaldo is a drunk’ at the Nou Camp on Sunday night. The case will now be passed to the anti-violence committee who must decide whether or not to open an investigation.
In a statement the League said it had listened to audio recordings of the match and were in agreement that in minute 65 of the game around 200 supporters repeatedly chanted ‘He is a drunk, Ronaldo is a drunk’.
The action taken against Barcelona is part of a clampdown on all forms of crowd trouble and chants that are interpreted as being likely to provoke trouble. It comes after a Deportivo supporter was killed in a pitched battle before a match at Atletico Madrid’s Vicente Calderon stadium in November

Real Madrid's hopes of securing a first La Liga title since 2012 suffered a setback as they were held 1-1 by Villarreal at the Bernabeu Stadium.
Carlo Ancelotti's leaders looked to be heading four points clear at the top of the table after Cristiano Ronaldo's ninth league penalty of the season.
It was awarded after Ronaldo was bundled over by Eric Bailly.
But Villarreal hit back through Gerard Moreno, the 22-year-old beating Iker Casillas with a low shot from 18-yards.
Real had started the game with a slender one-point lead at the summit after Barcelona's workmanlike 3-1 win at Granada on Saturday.
Yet while they extended their lead to two points, Ancelotti will consider this a wasted opportunity to keep some distance from Barca, who they visit on 22 March.

Real Madrid were unable to increase their advantage at the top of La Liga after they were beaten by Athletic Bilbao at San Mames.
Athletic striker Aritz Aduriz, 30, put the hosts ahead with a header from Mikel Rico's cross.
Real dominated the game after half-time and Gareth Bale's audacious long-range effort struck the post.
But Athletic hung on to claim the victory which means Real have just a two-point lead over Barcelona.
The Catalan club will go top if they can take maximum points from Sunday's match against Rayo Vallecano at the Nou Camp.

Some game of football. Schalke with a couple of decent chances at the end to knock Real out. Could have been the biggest upset in European history if they did it imo.
The Real fans come across as awful geebags altogether. The stuff with booing Bale is beyond embarrassing.

Royal Madrid fans. They have the most fickle, arrogant, obnoxious and unknowledgeable fans of any team in Europe.

Hmmmmmm. That's some statement. Norwich beating Bayern Munich, Aberdeen beating Real Madrid, Celtic beating Inter Milan, Liverpool coming back in Istanbul, Porto winning in 2004..... there are plenty of bigger examples. Plenty of reigning champions have been knocked out in the last sixteen or earlier before. Sure, they might not have been as wealthy as Real Madrid but the best team in Spain losing to the third best team in Germany is not a gigantic upset up there with the biggest in history.

Fair enough they didn't play as well as they can but Shalke did and they have some European stars of the future in their team. They are a point off the top of the league, into the champions league Q-Final, I don't really know what more they want. Its not possible to win every trophy every year. That's the problem with spending the guts of a E100 million on a couple of players if their form dips at all they are going to be crucified. Ronaldo hadn't scored for 2 games and all of a sudden it was a crisis. Even though he had 41 goals (43 now) before tonight. Its mad stuff. Id say Ancelotti cant wait to get out of their in the summer.

Like, he is seven goals shy of 300 for the club. He'll make it this season in all likelihood. He has scored more than a goal a game for the club, consistently, for six seasons. He has 41 in 38 in all competitions this season and an average of over 50 a season in his first five seasons for the club. And two games without a goal is a crisis and they worry if he is finished just because he is now 30. They're all crazy.
I mean, I know Raul only scored 54 goals after his 30th birthday (compared to 269 beforehand) but Raul scored those over twelve seasons, not five, and is nowhere near the beast Ronaldo is. Real Madrid fans are the most delusional there are.
