Chelsea and West Ham are nothing yo-yo clubs. Swap them with Wednesday and Forest. Coventry for Leicester too.

I didn't know that. I thought you had just picked the '90s clubs in '90s order.

Had Villa not (just) sneaked promotion to the PL via the p/o's in 2018/19, they mightn't have been a football club at all.

In order to clinch promotion, they vastly overspent their budget, with wages alone something like 120% of total revenue. And that was with their last parachute payment.

Had they not gone up, they'd have been absolutely hammered by the EFL in 2019/20 for blowing FFP out of the water. Which also shows why it was so important they didn't go straight back down again either, since the EFL would then have been able to do them, just like they did with QPR when they went back down after one season previously.

Meanwhile, "Properly-run Football Clubs" like Millwall and Brentford try to compete without the benefit of parachute money AND within the FFP rules.

(From May 2019)
"But Aston Villa - who are once again battling it out in the play-offs this year - failed in their target despite being £54m in the red in terms of revenue and operating expenses.

Villa's accounts stated that the 'prime goal is securing a return to the FA Premier League', and their wage bill of £71million reflected this ambition."

https://htwww.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-7034591/Championship-clubs-combined-operating-loss-510m-year.html

P.S. In the window just closed, Villa spent £74m on new players, whilst receiving precisely zilch from player sales in return:

Pablo Hernandez ruins what would have been the goal of the season by skying the ball over from 12 yards

Leeds are not satisfied with three goals

When you consider what Villa did to world champions Liverpool and now what Leeds have done to Villa tonight, I think Leeds would have beaten Liverpool 11-2 tonight had they been playing them

Full time: The Villa 0 United 3

For too long the Premier League has been stunk out by piddling little Bournemouths and Blackpools and Burnleys and Boltons and Blackburns and Barnsleys and Birminghams and Bradfords and Brightons and Brentfords

The proper football clubs are back, baby

This is the big league

Sometimes when the original premise of a thread isn't that funny it's better to let it die. Fair play Sid for doubling downThumbs Up
