New season so a new thread for the player ratings. Definitely seems to be more Irish players across the Championship and League 1 this season - I think almost 60 got some game time across those two divisions between last night and today, and there are more games to come tomorrow and Monday night.

29/7/22

Championship

Josh Cullen 8

Superb in the opening 45 minutes and showed his class in second.

Dara Costelloe 6

Had two really good first half chances where he should have done better but his movement was good and he has the physical attributes to be a threat.

30/7/22

Championship

Olamide Shodipo 5

A willing runner but offered no end product and was replaced midway through the second half by Albert Adomah.

Sinclair Armstrong 6

Made his debut in the second half and put himself about against a physical Blackburn defence. Had a glorious opportunity to make it a day to remember when the ball dropped to him just outside the six-yard box from a Kakay cross, but he was unable to set his feet and the the chance was lost.

CJ Hamilton 6

Had to do most of his work out of possession and defensively during his short appearance.

Jeff Hendrick 6.5

Got around the pitch but had much more of an impact in the second half as he looked to get stuck in and disrupt Blackpool's momentum. Helped keep things ticking over going forward.

Shane Long 5

Had a few touches but couldn't make much of an impact on the game.

Callum O'Dowda 8

Had a quieter start than Ojo on the other flank, but his link-up play with Collins was encouraging. Did excellently to skip past his marker and set up Sawyers for his goal.

Mark Sykes 8

Created two good chances in opening five minutes by getting crosses away, one in which Matty James almost scored. Full of energy down that right side with some skill to boot. Once or twice caught out of position but aside from that, faultless.

Scott Hogan 6

Didn't buzz about with the bristling intent of pre-season - and with very little ball to work with he was a peripheral figure throughout.

Will Smallbone 6

On to change the system to 3-4-1-2 and showed some quick feet at times.

Gavin Kilkenny 6

A late change to 4-3-3 after Wilmot injury. Booked for pulling back Leonard to stop counter attack.

Michael Obafemi 6

Didn't get much in the way of chances until spurning a sitter in the second half. A few rusty touches in what was a frustrating display for the forward.

Ryan Manning 6

Got forward well after coming on against his former club and almost had a chance to win it at the death before being tackled.

Robbie Brady 6

Got on the ball early doors and sent some teasing crosses into the box. Put in a shift and created the first half chance for Riis with a clever ball over the top. A couple of loose passes but he did okay.

Alan Browne 5

Covered the ground as always but didn't see lots of ball in the first half. Had to tread carefully after being shown a yellow card and moved to right wing-back when Potts went off.

Troy Parrott 6

Took him a bit of time to get into the game and find his feet. Was on the end of a couple of heavy challenges in the first half but showed some nice touches. Had two big chances to score and will be disappointed not to have found the net, but positive to see him getting those opportunities already.

Darragh Lenihan 7

Strong in the air against West Brom striker Karlan Grant. Organised Boro’s defence and was progressive with his passing.

Dara O’Shea 8 (Star Man)

The pick of the defenders by some way. Dealt with various attacks with his usual no-nonsense approach and stood up to the challenge of dealing with the imposing Forss when he was introduced. Some titanic blocks and interceptions along the way.

Jayson Molumby 7

He was quiet in the first period but he made a crucial couple of contributions in the second. The commitment on show in the build up to the equaliser was clear for all to see, while the pass once he’d won it into Wallace was inch perfect. Ran himself into the ground.

League 1

Trevor Clarke 6

Moves like Road Runner with his small, yet speedy legs, and there was a desire to break forward with the ball from deep which occasionally caused the visitors some concern, but he was pretty well contained on the whole.

Jack Taylor 7

Busy, but rarely effective before the break. A midfielder transformed in the second-half when he pushed forward impressively until Posh hit the front. Then successfully protected the back three in the closing stages.

Sammie Szmodics 6

Hardly seen in possession in the first half despite making many runs. Lovely pass helped Joe Ward set up the first Posh goal for Jack Marriott. Substituted after Posh went in front and received a fine ovation from the visiting fans in what could have been his final game for the club.

Jason Knight 8

Midfielder played full-back which you suspect will continue to happen until the club lands a replacement in the transfer market. Provided decent support and did really well.

Eiran Cashin 8

Such an assured performance and defensively was outstanding. Loves a tackle and produced a great block in the first half. Plays with such passion and you can see what the club means to him.

Conor Hourihane 8

The former Aston Villa midfielder was followed wherever he went as Oxford tried to limit his influence on the game early on. But he conjured up a majestic finish 10 minutes from time to send Pride Park into a frenzy.

James Collins 7

Had a couple of efforts at goal that were deflected in the first half and had to fend off the centre-backs on his own but kept them occupied. Was so close to a goal after the break.

Marcus Harness 6

Showed some neat touches throughout his Ipswich Town debut but couldn’t quite wriggle free to create as he would have liked. Had a few moments where he couldn’t get the ball out of his feet and some other moments of clever invention before being replaced just before the hour mark.

Paudie O'Connor 6

A nervous debut at centre back for the Irishman but he will no doubt begin to improve as he settles into his new surroundings.

Anthony Scully 4

Badly struggled up front all match.

Harry Charsley 7

Given some freedom to get forward from the midfield three. Beat his man on the right to set up a chance for Proctor, then did well after the break to get over a cross just as the defender seemed to have forced him out.

Joe Rafferty 7

Really encouraging start to Pompey career. Some important blocks, particularly from Gregory in second half.

Sean Raggett 7

Looked a little rusty at first, but full of heart and bravery as ever. Headed one off line in second half.

Ronan Curtis 7

Tireless as ever, but couldn’t affect Pompey positively too much in attack and troubled by Marvin Johnson’s forays forward.

Scottish Premiership

Jake Doyle-Hayes 6

Came on for the last few minutes.

Really good round up youTellMe. Good to see oshea win some plaudits.

I can't help feeling the seasons first games where a little underwhelming from an Irish point of view.

Was hoping for a kilkenny and smallbone start, no place in the squads for devoy etc.

Still it's only the first games

30/7/22

League 1

Warren O'Hora 6.5

A calm head as ever and didn't give up an awful lot when it came to chances.

Conor Grant 5.5

Barely involved really as Cambridge shut him down at every opportunity with an aggressive press.

Darragh Burns 5.5

Came on too late to really make much of an impact on the right flank.

Jordan Shipley 6

It was a quiet debut for the former Coventry midfielder. Struggled to get into the game, and was subbed off for Aiden O’Brien with 10 minutes to go.

31/7/22

Scottish Premiership

Jonny Hayes 7

Missed a glorious chance to pull the game back to 1-1, but was the biggest threat in attack for Aberdeen as the former Celt looked to spoil the party.

Conversations around the average age of the squad are irrelevant for Hayes, as the winger has still got it and put in a big shift to try and find a way for his side to get back into the game.

1/8/22

Championship

Ciaran Clark 4

In on the right of the back three in the absence of Chris Basham and Anel Ahmedhodzic and struggled from the start up against the pace of Watford's attack. Mistimed tackles, got sold on the halfway line by Dennis who raced clear and was shown a yellow card on 15 minutes when he barged into the player after he again looked to get away.

John Egan 6

Came to the rescue on a couple of occasions with well-timed interceptions. Got a crucial touch to poke the ball away with Sema looking to get in on goal. Read the game well, producing a standing tackle to stop Joao Pedro in his tracks and clearing the danger on numerous occasions from set-pieces.

Enda Stevens 4

Struggled against the pace. Was pleased to see Egan clear the threat of Sema after the attack came from losing out on the halfway line after getting a throw-in with Norwood all wrong. Came off 10 minutes into the second half with what appeared to be a foot injury.

5/8/22

Championship

Scott Hogan 7

Off the mark with his first goal of the season. A typical Hogan goal, sneaking in and causing problems when and where it hurts the opposition most. Was quiet after scoring his goal, but if he can replicate the sort of form in front of goal which got him a big-money move to Aston Villa in the summer of 2017, Eustace will be a happy manager.

6/8/22

Premier League

Mark Travers 7

Forced into an early stop from Danny Ings, but was otherwise not made to stretch. Did almost make a meal of a simple catch in the first half, but claimed at the second time of asking. Will surely relish the added competition from Neto.

Gavin Bazunu 6

Beaten by Ryan Sessegnon for the first goal but wasn't helped by Kyle Walker-Peters who failed to get anything on the cross. Could do little for the second goal either, with Eric Dier uncontested when he flicked his header into the far post. Left exposed yet again when Salisu turned into his own net and when Kulusevski curled home unopposed moments later.

Nathan Collins 6

A full debut for the sole summer signing. Little fault could be attributed to Leeds' equaliser, but Collins - who in between goals was solid and composed - was caught flat footed when Bamford got past him. That seemed to unnerve him, and Bamford did him again before the end.

Championship

Mark Sykes 6

Got forward well on numerous occasions to get his crosses away. Positionally caused some confusion alongside Vyner and Sunderland appeared to target his side to a degree of success.

Josh Cullen 6

Dictated play last week, not so this but improved as the game went on.

Dara Costelloe 7

Perhaps the brightest spark in first half with an eagerness and a running threat.

Robbie Brady 7

90 minutes in the tank for him and was the one PNE looked to throughout, with creativity in short supply. Was sloppy at times in possession but his crossing quality and vision led to a couple of chances inside the box. Saw a shot saved in the first half while another deflected on to the crossbar in the second.

Alan Browne 7

Didn't see much of the ball in the first half but tracked back constantly and carried out his defensive duties well. Came to the party in the second half more and was the pulse behind PNE's play for a 10 minute spell in particular. Had a chance from close range which Ingram kept out.

Troy Parrott 6

Was busy once again up top and the main goal threat in the second half. Tested the goalkeeper with a left foot drive, saw another deflect behind for a corner and also ran 1v1 but couldn't squeeze his effort in. Delayed the shot a little bit too long perhaps. Needs that first goal to set him on his way.

Darragh Lenihan 4

Brought in to add leadership and composure at the back but he was unconvincing as Boro corroded before receiving a straight red late on. You do question why he wasn't the man closest to Dykes for the third goal.

Jeff Hendrick 7

Gave Reading much more of a physical presence in midfield and looked much more assured compared to last week at Blackpool. Brought lots of energy to the side and didn't give Cardiff any time on the ball.

Shane Long 8

Brought in for his first start in exactly 11 years for the club and took less than half an hour to open his account once again, firing home from the spot just before the half hour mark to spark jubilant scenes in front of Club 1871. Worked hard up front all afternoon and pressed the City backline well.

Callum O'Dowda 7 - Star Man

Really tidy with the ball at his feet and had City's best chances of the first half. Scored his first Bluebirds goal with a fantastic header and had a well-hit shot saved well not long after.

John Egan 7

Looked comfortable and in control the whole game. Benik Afobe never troubled him as much as the Millwall striker would have liked. Did really well to get his head to Scott Malone's goal-bound effort and direct it wide for a corner.

Ciaran Clark 6

Much better from the Newcastle loanee. Understandably looked more comfortable on the left than he did at Watford on the right. Nothing spectacular, but steady away.

Will Smallbone 8

Looks an astute signing with his creativity and flair on the ball. A real class-act in the heart of midfield, and involved in most positive Stoke passages of play.

Ryan Manning 5 - Star Man

Drafted in for Matty Sorinola, the Irishman was one of Swansea's better performers in the first half. Put in a few decent deliveries into the Blackburn box, but grew frustrated in the second half.

Michael Obafemi 5

On the periphery of proceedings for the majority of the first half, although he was neat enough when he did get touches. More involved in the second half but never really threatened, although, not entirely his own fault.

Sammie Szmodics 7

Opened the scoring on debut with a calm finish from just inside the box after great work from Hedges. Pressed relentlessly before being taken off just before the hour mark.

League 1

Kieran Sadlier 6

Went to right wing-back after coming on.

Glenn Whelan 7

Did the job the manager wanted, keeping Rovers in control and allowing Finley to have a rest.

Jason Knight 5

Linked up well with Mendez-Laing and is starting to look a natural at right-back. Missed a huge chance at the back post, though.

Eiran Cashin 6

So composed on the ball and did well up against Corey Blackett-Taylor in a one-against-one.

Conor Hourihane 7

His pass to Barkhuizen set up Collins' first big chance and he was generally excellent again with the ball at his feet and positionally.

James Collins 5

Missed two really good chances that should have been scored. Tenacious, aggressive and a real threat. When he finds his scoring boots the goals will flow.

Harry Charsley 5

Broke into the right of the area just before the break but stabbed his shot wide of the far post. Fell below the standard he set last week, but wasn’t the only one.

Jack Taylor 7.5

The midfielder has started the season looking fit and strong. He's dominating central areas. His passing is not always accurate, but he delivered a peach of a cross that should have led to a goal for Clarke-Harris in the second-half.

Joe Rafferty 6

Solid defensively, yet saw little of him as attacking presence down right flank.

Sean Raggett 7

Refused to let anything past as the Imps were smothered. Did his job as efficiently as ever.

Ronan Curtis 5

Replaced Reeco Hackett on 62 minutes. Injected energy but couldn’t inspire.

I read on Irish Propaganda that 11% of the players who started today in the Championship were Irish. 21 out of 198.

6/8/22

Championship

Jimmy Dunne 6

Scored with a goal he knew nothing about following Steffen’s brain fade when trying to claim a corner only for the ball to bounce off the Irishman’s back. However, it was often a difficult afternoon for the big centre-half, whose poor touch led to the corner that saw Boro score just before half-time. He then almost gifted Duncan Watmore a goal minutes later when he was caught dawdling on the edge of his own box but was bailed out by Rob Dickie’s block. Better in the second half with some towering headers as Rangers found themselves under the cosh.

League 1

Warren O'Hora 7.5

A typically level-headed showing from the Irishman, forming a good working partnership with Tucker alongside him.

Conor Grant 6.5

Kept Dons ticking over and driving forwards late on.

Darragh Burns 6

Didn't see a lot of the ball in the latter stages.

Scottish Premiership

Liam Scales 7

The 23-year-old handled the move to left back well and showed another side of his game with some promising runs down the flank.

Jonny Hayes 7

Goodwin recently described the Dons veteran as 'like a 21-year-old' and the Pittodrie boss might not have been far off based on his performance today. Despite giving away the penalty that led to the Buddies' only goal, the Irishman put in a solid display down the flank.

8/8/22

Dara O'Shea 8

Caused problems in the air in Watford's box as the Fur-long-throw weapon returned. One flicked header might've been converted at the back post. Took a no nonsense approach to his defensive duties, though most of the second half he was on the halfway line as Albion dominated.

Jayson Molumby 8

Was everywhere in the first half, snapping at the heels of yellow shirts and maintained a tenacity which eventually got him into the book. Progressive with his passing but looks to pass rather than shoot when the openings emerge sometimes. A selfless and committed showing.

Thanks for this.

Seems like O'Shea and Molumby have started the season well. Great to see for differing reasons. O'Shea because he needed some form after his injury. And Molumby because he wasn't always a guaranteed start. From reading their fans forum, a couple of posters reckon he's improving all the time with games. Which I think I and a few others have said are essential for him for a few reasons e.g. his long term injury a while back at a crucial point in his development, his over eagerness when he isn't playing enough that manifests itself in over aggression in tackles and maybe nerves in passing. High hopes for both his season.

9/8/22

EFL Cup

Kieran Sadlier 7.5

Made a much greater impact after the break with crossing improving and took goal well to ensure Wanderers' place in the second round was beyond doubt

Sean McLoughlin 4

Has to win the header above Cook for the opening goal and that set the tone for the night, looked less than convincing.

Sean Roughan 7

A good performance at full back, with very little defence work required, particularly in the second half.

Paudie O'Connor 8

Yet another strong performer for Lincoln City tonight. The midfield continued to offer for the defence whilst working well with the frontline, even after a number of substitutions altered the flow of the game slightly.

Anthony Scully 9

Scores a deserved goal with his last touch of the game after some neat work. Was constantly involved down a left-hand side that proved fruitful for Lincoln throughout the game. One of city's best performers on the night.

Greg Cunningham 7

A couple of key tackles in the second half and slotted in pretty seamlessly, but a similar story to Bauer with Rhodes' goal. Tidy on the ball as ever.

Troy Parrott 7

In the right place at the right time for his goal and almost had a second shortly after. Looked confident and a threat once again. More valuable minutes.

Eiran Cashin 8

Made a crucial block to deny Will Swan in the first half which demonstrated once again his willingness to put his body on the line. As brave as they come.

Jason Knight 6

Played in a much more advanced role and looked to have claimed his first goal of the season only for it to be credited as an own goal. Energy was good late on.

James Collins 7

Striker was so close to his first goal for the club having been denied by Christy Pym and seeing a goal chalked off for offside. Excellent when he came on and deserved a goal.

Jack Bonham 6

Ready to receive ball as Stoke tried to build from back. Can’t afford moments like giving ball away to Hunter with throw. Couldn’t get near penalties.

Gavin Kilkenny 7

First start for loanee. Always an option to receive ball and tries to move it around quickly.

Will Smallbone 6

Some neat play around the area in search for winner.

Joel Bagan 4

A solid start from the left-back, his first of the season. But just lacked that confidence and final cross at times. Was also outjumped by Colby Bishop for the third goal.

Sean Raggett 8

Lion-hearted display from the skipper. Blocked everything, including Gavin Whyte’s goal-bound shot.

Joe Rafferty 8

Asked to play at left-back and clearly uncomfortable at times being a right-footer, yet stuck at it and defensively was sound.

Ronan Curtis 8

Burst into life in the second half with his tireless energy and fantastic passion. Had the guts to take the penalty and strong run set up Pigott for the first.

Jimmy Dunne 8

Was very solid at the back and can feel unfortunate to be on the losing side.

Sinclair Armstrong 7

Showed plenty of promise in his longest spell on the field in professional football, using his pace and power to unsettle the Charlton defence. Played a huge role in setting up the Rangers goal for Roberts as his physical presence forced Eoghan O’Connell into giving the ball away to the on-loan Leeds man.

Oladmide Shodipo 6

Added some much-needed pace and dynamism when he was introduced from the bench. Almost won late in the game with a curling effort that just flew wide. Scored in the shoot-out.

Mazeed Ogungbo 8

Ogungbo has a clear talent, and it was on show against Bristol Rovers. His ability to read a player and know when to commit served his side well throughout the game. As a left-wing back, there were occasions when the Arsenal loanee was caught too far forward and allowed Harry Anderson, Bristol’s right-winger to attack their left-hand side. He showed good intent for most of the match but could have been sharper at times.

Ryan Manning 8

Made so many defensive interventions and was impressive at the back and going forwards on the left. Won numerous free-kicks and was excellent before being replaced.

Kian Leavy 5

A few nice passes from the Irish midfielder, as well as some decent set-piece deliveries which weren't taken advantage of by his teammates. Did get caught on the ball on several occasions though.

Great updates again. McLoughlin struggling again, not looking good for him. I saw him against Bristol City on the last day of the Championship last season and he was pretty bad. Hull got hammered 5-0 that day and he had a hand in a couple of the goals.

Posted By: You Tell Me
Date Posted: 10 Aug 2022 at 1:46pm

Marcus Harness 6

Floated in an attacking role and had lots of possession on the edge of the box.

Jordan Shipley 6

Played as a left wing back after playing central in the first two games and had a quiet evening. Did have an effort from range blocked and tried hard to get Salop moving forward.

CJ Hamilton 3

Nothing came off for Hamilton, a player void of confidence and ultimately nowhere near the standard required.

Glenn Whelan 5

Not an ideal solution for the manager with Finley having to be protected as he returns from injury, meaning first-team coach/emergency player Whelan was required for a half-hour shift again. With Paul Coutts back on Saturday after suspension, Whelan could be kept on the bench.

Louie Watson 7

First start for the summer signing and he looked to keep things as simple as possible in the centre of midfield getting the ball, finding his man and trying to find space for the return. Not afraid to get stuck in when needed and went close to picking out the bottom corner with one shot. Skipped around too easily by Waite for the winner though.

Warren O'Hora 7.5

Didn't put a foot wrong all night. Reliable and mature as ever, limited Sutton to precious little.

Dawson Devoy 7

A really promising debut for the Irishman. Looked eager to get on the ball, made some good passes including the excellent ball to get Grant in to score. An exciting prospect.

Darragh Burns 8 - Star Man

A livewire throughout. Wanted the ball, wanted to run at defenders and caused issues all night. Came close with a well-controlled header, and had a couple of shots which had the keeper thinking. Operated well on both flanks too.

Conor Grant 7.5

Got to show what he is about with a versatile showing in the centre. Made clever runs and passes, got into good areas and took his goal really well.

Ed McGinty 7

Endured a nightmare start to his debut with the handball outside the penalty area and took time to settle. Better in the second half and made a couple of good stops, before a brilliant penalty save.

James Golding 6.5

Showed plenty of promise going forward in a role we had not seen him play. His positioning needs to be better defensively, but he is still learning.

Kian Leavy 5

A few nice passes from the Irish midfielder, as well as some decent set-piece deliveries which weren't taken advantage of by his teammates. Did get caught on the ball on several occasions though.

It was a strange one, It wasn't really a critical review of his performance as much as it was a personal grudge against him for some reason

10/8/22

EFL Cup

Conor McCarthy 8

An excellent slide tackle in the second half.

Luca Connell 7

Did a good job as a ball-winner in the centre.

Tayo Adaramola 5

Got the fans excited with his first touch of the ball with a show of tenacity to wriggle free of his marker and displayed explosive pace down the left but not the dream debut everyone had hoped for. Showed glimpses of quality but looked a bit raw at times. Replaced by Bidwell on the hour.

Jack Taylor 6

Perhaps didn't have the desired effect his manager was looking for as Posh never really got back the control of the midfield he was brought on to help regain.

11/8/22

EFL Cup

Dara O'Shea 7

Albion's sole survivor from Monday seemed to be flying with confidence. Very composed in tight situations and his raking diagonals to the wings are getting more accurate.

Callum Robinson 7

Like so much of last season, Robinson drifted in and out of this game - yet he came to the fore and delivered when it mattered. Played a hand in creating a Mowatt opening in the first half before he stood up an inviting cross for Grant to net.

John Egan 7

Was in the right place at the right time to mop up after a rare poor effort from his partner Ahmedhodzic. Handled himself well despite the change to a back four.

12/8/22

Championship

Josh Cullen 6

Good recovery tackle on Sarr early on after Muric error and was busy in midfield. Knows his role.

Dara Costelloe 5

Couldn't get in the game in the first half and while there is a talent in there, he will need time and patience.

13/8/22

Premier League

Nathan Collins 6

Caught the eye on his Molineux debut by breaking the lines with his passing out from the back to set Wolves on their way forwards. Defensively, dealt well with Mitrovic on the whole but was caught out by the striker's physicallity on occasion in what will be one of the toughest matchups of the season for Wolves' new recruit.

Mark Travers 5

The Cherries' goalkeeper was always going to come under pressure against a rampant, hungry City side, and that proved to be the case. He was helpless to keep out the first two goals, but perhaps could have been stronger for Phil Foden's effort. Yes, there was a deflection, but his body position didn't scream authority. Nothing he could have done for the fourth.

Gavin Bazunu 7

Wasn't needed for the first half an hour but quite literally sprung into action when Jack Harrison fired a shot towards his bottom corner from a wide angle. He kept that out with a strong left arm before denying Rasmus Kristensen from the resulting corner.

Championship

Callum O'Dowda 9

Another assist chalked up and, to be fair, should have had two or three more when his excellent crosses preceded spurned chances. The driving force of Cardiff's attack.

Scott Hogan 6

Was in front of goal with a chance to score the equaliser but a crucial block from defence denied him. Did not see much of the ball in the first-half, though had a chance to equalise after the break.

CJ Hamilton 6

Limited time to make an impact.

Ryan Manning 8

Pressed really well throughout and regularly won the ball high up the pitch, such was his endeavour. Looked dangerous on corner duty too. Tougher second half but was still very impressive.

Michael Obafemi 7

The forward was beating his arms in the air as fans chanted his name during the warm-up, and Obafemi looked full of confidence. Twice denied by Dan Grimshaw in the first half but always looked lively when on the ball. Unselfishly squared to Olivier Ntcham for the winner.

Will Smallbone 6

Played part in the equaliser with ability to take the ball forward. Good cross for Gayle’s disallowed goal.

Robbie Brady 9

Brilliant performance. Made the right decisions on the ball and seemed to have more time on it than anyone else. So composed, ran himself into the ground and his cross for the goal was sublime.

Alan Browne 8

The skipper set the tone early doors with his work off the ball. Led by example, getting up and down throughout and looking to hurt Luton with his powerful runs. One sloppy moment in the second half but PNE's defence dealt with the danger.

Troy Parrott 8

A tireless and selfless display from him up top. Was a focal point for PNE all game and linked play up fantastically. Never stopped making himself available and running for the team. Had a chance to kill the match at the end.

Alan Browne - 8

The skipper set the tone early doors with his work off the ball. Led by example, getting up and down throughout and looking to hurt Luton with his powerful runs. One sloppy moment in the second half but PNE's defence dealt with the danger.

Jeff Hendrick 5

Has the vision to play higher up the field, but still looks a little off the pace. Hopefully as he gets more minutes through the season he’ll get fitter, because he has the tools to be useful at this level.

Subbed off for Mamadi Camara and will need to provide more end product for Reading in the future if he wants to play the full 90.

Shane Long 6

What’s fantastic to see about Long is that he’s matured and developed into a really well rounded footballer. He does nothing spectacular, but as the old football saying goes: “he does all the basics well” like a Heskey or a Milner.

Would like to see him given earlier service from his midfielders in future weeks because he gets himself into good positions but is often overlooked. Does well to link up play in the final third and is proving to be more than just a nostalgia pickup for Reading so far.

Jimmy Dunne 8

Should have been more alert to deny Stewart following up to tap home a rebound but otherwise very good at the heart of the defence as Sunderland’s dangerous front two were well contained in the second half. Made a brilliant block on the line to deny Sunderland a dramatic winner.

Olamide Shodipo 5

Given the chance to start and did little to justify the decision. Struggled to beat a man consistently and was far too easily dispossessed – and bar one cross to Adomah he failed to deliver from out wide.

Sinclair Armstrong 7

Made a huge difference when he came on for the final 10 minutes. Forced a fine save from keeper Anthony Patterson following a barnstorming run that saw him brush aside Sunderland full-back Denis Cirkin. Forced the corner that led to the equaliser after earlier trying to score with an audacious bicycle kick.

Mark Sykes 7

Played the pass that freed Conway on the right which led to the opener. A real work horse at wing-back, what he lacks in a positional sense he makes up for in desire. A brilliant cross for Conway who couldn't convert.

League 1

Glenn Whelan 8

Did a crucial job for his manager that should not go unnoticed. With several of Barton's midfielders short of match fitness, Whelan played from the start and was dogged for his 59 minutes on the pitch. He policed the midfield and allowed Barton to bring Rossiter on for the final half hour, easing him back from injury.

Joe Rafferty 8

Another solid performance from the right-back as he proves a shrewd piece of business.

Sean Raggett 9

Had a real tussle with on-loan Saints striker Dan Nlundulu - but there was only going to be one winner.

Ronan Curtis 6

Added a threat and had one decent run on goal.

Jason Knight 8

Rosenior spoke in midweek as to how the right-back spot suits his qualities despite being a midfielder by trade. Hard to disagree with that on this fine showing.

Eiran Cashin 9 - Star Man

Had a terrific first half in which he demonstrated calmness, composure and some excellent distribution. Is a firm fans' favourite and was majestic.

Conor Hourihane 8

Was a joy to watch in the first half and looked like he really enjoyed himself. Created the first goal and his vision played a key role in the second. Left foot is so good it could peel carrots.

James Collins 6

Had an excellent chance in the second half and you can't help but feel there is a goal coming soon. Cannot underestimate his work rate for the team.

Marcus Harness 7

A week on from opening his Ipswich account, Harness now has his first Portman Road goal to his name after reacting well to turn Wes Burns’ spilled shot away. Aside from his goal, the former Portsmouth man had some decent moments before being replaced in the second period. He’s learning his role in this side and has certainly shown he’s going to be an important player.

Paudie O'Connor 6

Probably played slightly better than his centre-back partner.

Anthony Scully 6.5

Played a key role in the opening goal with his floated cross causing havoc in the Forest Green defence, although he did generally struggle.

Jack Taylor 5

The entire Posh midfield had no answer to Plymouth's competitive and skilled midfield and they were outplayed as a result. Substituted at half-time which told us what the manager thought of this performance.

Kieran Sadlier 6

Went to right wing and did what he could going forward. Tracked back well too.

Scottish Premiership

Liam Scales 6

A brilliant cross for Miovski to score Aberdeen’s first. A couple of moments where he wasn’t his composed self.

Jonny Hayes 6

The Irishman put in a shift and scored at the second time of asking to put Aberdeen ahead. But like his fellow attackers there wasn’t a constant attacking threat.

Ross Tierney 7

Gave Motherwell more attacking legs from midfield, set up Van Veen for a chance and nearly scored himself.

League 1

Warren O'Hora 5.5

Didn't make any stand-out mistakes, and was the most reliable defender really, but couldn't get the backline to gel.

Conor Grant 5.5

Had a great chance to draw Dons level but fired over the top. Was withdrawn at half-time as Dons changed shape.

Jordan Shipley 6

He got among the Wycombe players, putting in some good challenges playing behind the front two. Put in a great ball into the box for Pyke to attack in the first half.

14/8/22

Scottish Premiership

Alan Power 6

Some good recoveries in the middle of the park and controlled the ball when he had it.

Deji Sotona 4

Not much for him to feed on.

Jamie McGrath 4

Not his sort of game at all. Barely saw the ball but did very little when was on it.

Championship

Darragh Lenihan 5

Partly culpable for both goals. First he gave Berge too much space and the second his sliced clearance conceded the throw before he allowed Ndiaye to spin off him. Some sloppy balls out of defence and was rash to needlessly jump into some tackles and aerial duels. Assist for the second equaliser.

John Egan 6.5

Neat and tidy in and out of possession for the most part but couldn't help United see out the victory, with Boro's equaliser coming from a set-piece. Good covering tackle in injury-time prevented a good Boro chance after Ahmedhodzic was beaten by Watmore.

Sam Szmodics 6

Wasn't overly involved in the match, in truth. Did his defensive duties but didn't contribute much offensively.

Dara O'Shea 6

A stoic performance from O'Shea in front of ROI manager Stephen Kenny. It was a tough enough task with Blackburn's forward pairing amongst the most physical in the league, but O'Shea as usual acquitted himself well enough.

Jayson Molumby 4

Game passed Molumby by for large parts in the first half. Was excellent v Watford but much quieter here and had much less involvement in proceedings. Sacrificed as Albion pushed.

Callum Robinson 5

Unable to make any meaningful impact in the final third.

Disappointing to read that about Molumby, on the face of it.

Championship

Scott Hogan 7

A surging run and an accurate cross showed the assists of pre-season are going to continue into the campaign. Earned himself one pot-shot in the second half but this was a day for working hard without the ball.

Mark Sykes 5

Was enjoying a solid game until the bizarre incident after the hour mark when he received a straight red card for reacting to a challenge. Put his side under unnecessary pressure when his team were cruising. Up until then, he was proving to be a handful. Will now miss the next three games.

Josh Cullen 7

Delicious pass for Rodriguez goal and helped Clarets control the contest.

Robbie Brady 8

Excellent vision and range of passing to create openings in behind the Rotherham defence during the first half. Fizzed a deflected shot wide in the second half, early doors, and continued to have quality in his crossing.

Alan Browne 6

A couple of sloppy moments in possession in the first half. Got himself into good areas at times though and created a glorious chance for Parrott before the break. Improved in the second half and saw a shot from 20 yards held.

Troy Parrott 7

Started so brightly. Created a huge chance for Johnson after a purposeful drive forward and then went close himself moments later, showing quick feet inside the box. Had a massive opportunity just before half-time but was denied. Finishing touch was lacking, but work rate and link-up play very good, again.

Jimmy Dunne 6

Sometimes uncomfortable in possession but was typically combative.

Sinclair Armstrong 7

Was again excellent after coming on. Quick, powerful and with boundless energy – the youngster is great to watch and has so much potential.

League 1

Luca Connell 8

Did not get the glory like some others, but oils the wheels and was very tidy indeed.

Glenn Whelan 5

Could not change the pattern of the game. The Gas could not penetrate and Barnsley continued to fly forward onto anything loose.

Marcus Harness 8

The attacker ultimately came up with the winner in this game, firing home his third in as many league matches from outside the penalty area. Prior to that he had gotten away with one when an extremely loose backpass set Ahadme clear in the first half, with Walton bailing him out. His touch wasn’t always on point but he kept working hard, which allowed him to take his chance when it came. His start in an Ipswich shirt has been an excellent one.

Warren O'Hora 7.5

Defended well throughout, didn't put a foot wrong but will be frustrated with the late Vale goal.

Conor Grant 6.5

Got on the ball and looked to get things going.

Jack Taylor 8

Much better from a player who should be strong at League One level. He was always looking for the ball and he generally used it wisely. His headed goal was a bonus and a good sign from a player who will be a threat when getting into the opposition penalty area.

Joe Rafferty 7

Is proving a shrewd piece of business. Another solid performance.

Sean Raggett 8

Man mountain at the back again and set up Bishop’s equaliser.

Ronan Curtis 7

Was fired up for the occasion and endeavour was rewarded with a goal.

Jason Knight 7

Got into some great positions in the first half and there were a couple of occasions when he turned down the option of a cross to make an extra pass. Defended well, mind.

Eiran Cashin 7

Like Stearman was rarely tested as Derby had control of the game for large spells. Had a couple of willing runners in the Shrewsbury attack to contend with but was solid.

Conor Hourihane 6

The Derby midfielder always looked capable of making something happen in an attacking sense and created a good chance for Tom Barkhuizen in the first half.

James Collins 5

Foraged away up front without much joy as Shrewsbury, as you would expect under Steve Cotterill, were well organised. Never stopped looking for a chink in their armour.

David McGoldrick 5

Had a header saved by Marosi. Minutes will have done him the power of good.

17/8/22

Championship

Will Smallbone 6

Forced lucky save from Steffen. Dangerous at times when he got on the ball in final third even if not everything came off.

Gavin Kilkenny 6

On to try to help Stoke keep hold of the ball.

Darragh Lenihan 8

Was excellent at the back. Battled well throughout and orchestrated things.

Jeff Hendrick 7

Gave the team lots of energy in the midfield with his pressing and driving runs. Did tend to frustrate from time to time, though, when he got into some decent positions but then gave the ball away.

Shane Long 9

A masterclass from the veteran striker. Chased everything, won his headers, flicked the ball on, held it up, linked play up nicely - the full works. Only downer was not scoring a goal, although he did go close with fierce drive. Withdrawn for Joao.

Sam Szmodics 4

Pretty anonymous. Didn't see any of the ball due to the huge disconnect between defence and midfield. When he did have it, he struggled to create much.

John Egan 5

Lapse of concentration allowed the visitors back in it. Undercooked his pass to McAtee and Lynden Gooch pounced to race clear and lob Foderingham.

Dara O'Shea 6

Scythed down Ojo on the run in the first half, it was a blatant yellow card. From there, he was walking a bit of a tightrope against a lively and mobile forwards but generally fared okay. In truth, Albion's defence had little to worry about in the second half.

Jayson Molumby 5

Booked early on when tugging back O'Dowda. Threw himself into challenges but didn't always come away with the ball.

Callum Robinson 6

Looked the most likely of the subs to have an impact, wasn't far away from finding Grant shortly after coming on.

Callum O'Dowda 8

Not his natural position, especially in a back four, so we didn't see his attacking prowess. Did a brilliant makeshift job, though.

Was at the Reading game last night - The summed up Shane Long's performance perfectly there. Was MOM for me, Blackburn couldn't handle him. Keeper had to pull off a brilliant save to deny him.

Thought they were a bit generous with Jeff's rating - His final ball a few times was poor but he definitely was energetic and was always showing and looking for the ball which I think indicates a player not lagging confidence. Think he will do well over the season.

Sam Szmodics - Harsh on him to rate him so low. He was being played as an advanced attacking midfield but I can only remember him getting a couple of touches which was mainly down to the fact that Blackburn had very little of the ball in the first half.

Europa Conference League

Conor Coventry 6

With Declan Rice suspended and Flynn Downes currently having a minor concern over a toe issue, Conor Coventry was thrown in from the off and started in the centre of midfield next to Tomas Soucek. Viborg tried to add tempo in midfield as much as they could and it gave plenty for Coventry to deal with, Viborg getting joy countering the Hammers at times. Better after the break, seemed to be given more freedom, allowing him to better express a range of passing. Taken off late on.

20/8/22

Premier League

Nathan Collins 6

Collins produced one excellent challenge to prevent Son from finding a way past Sa when the South Korean was one on one. He backed that up with a number of good blocks, but Collins switched off for a split second at a corner and Kane drifted in behind him to score the winner.

Mark Travers 5

Powerless to prevent Arsenal's three goals. Pulled off a good stop before the first, but was let down by poor performances from those in front of him. Could perhaps have looked to claim more crosses to ease the burden on the centre-backs, but this is a minor point. Made several good saves late on to prevent the Cherries from conceding more.

Championship

Scott Hogan 6

Had one early shot which probably shouldn't have been blocked, then fluffed a counter attack when Bacuna had flown past him. Kept his work-rate up but the ball wouldn't drop for him in the box.

Josh Cullen 5

Played into trouble by Muric but a bad touch allowed Corbeanu to strike. Booked in second half.

CJ Hamilton 6

Lively off the bench and whilst his decision making could've been better, he drove Blackpool up the pitch.

Robbie Brady 7

Was one step ahead of others on plenty of occasions and created a couple of chances in the game. Tried to play at the right speed and tempo but was reduced to sending in hopeful crosses towards the end.

Alan Browne 6

Two good chances for him to score over the piece and Bachmann saved well on both occasions, in either half. Sometimes looked to do too much on the ball but okay on the whole. Covered plenty of ground at both ends of the pitch.

Troy Parrott 6

Dropped deep to link up play and was lively in the first half. Looked after the ball well up against big defenders but drifted in and out of the game in the second half. Had a couple of sights at goal - one saved from distance and another blocked.

Greg Cunningham 6

Passed well out from defence. Lack of pace an issue at times as Watford got joy in behind.

Jimmy Dunne 6

Lots to admire about the big Irishman’s passion, will to win and commitment – and one buccaneering run down the left wing that forced a corner in the first half was sight to behold. However, he has to take responsibility for the Rotherham goal by yet again failing to clear the ball from danger when he diverted it straight into the path of Chiedozie Ogbene for a simple finish. Almost handed another chance to the Millers in the second half with a very poor quick free-kick. Arguably looks more comfortable in a back three.

Sinclair Armstrong 6

A typically barnstorming cameo from off the bench for the teenager, but he will be cursing himself after spurning a glorious chance to open his account when he found himself one on one with Johansson but shot tamely at the Swede. A sign of things to come for him from Championship defenders when he was poleaxed off the ball and behind the referee’s back by a Rotherham player. Put the ball on the plate for Chair to score with a fine run and cross, but needs to find the composure to match his hugely impressive enthusiasm.

Olamide Shodipo 6

Another player guilty of failing to get a touch on a cross into the six-yard box with no-one close to him when he spurned Chair’s fine pass by letting the ball run across him for what should have been his first QPR goal.

Jeff Hendrick 7.5

Tenacious and energetic display by the Irishman who had a couple of chances to get on the scoresheet. Firstly, he had a shot deflected over the bar and he almost latched onto a pass by Tom Ince but let the ball run past him.

Shane Long 7.5

Another hard-working display from the fan favourite but didn't have much to show for his efforts. Had a decent chance to score early in the second half but couldn't get his shot away cleanly. Had an hour before making way for Joao.

Darragh Lenihan 7 - Star Man

Boro's best as he kept two good strikers in Long and then Joao quiet throughout.

John Egan 6

Relatively comfortable afternoon for the Republic of Ireland international up against Brereton Diaz. Got the better of that one.

Sam Szmodics 5

Was tasked with sitting on Norwood at the base of Sheffield United's midfield. Didn't get any service to try and affect the game going forward.

Gavin Kilkenny 6

Smashed in the face by Simms’ elbow. Kept wanting the ball and showed some tight turns.

Will Smallbone 5

A couple of dangerous runs down the inside channel without being able to find final ball.

Ryan Manning 4

Caused a few issues when he moved back to the left, although he was looser than usual in possession.

Michael Obafemi 5

Barely got a sniff in the first-half as Swansea struggled to create chances. Worked hard to no avail.

Dara O'Shea 8

Big afternoon for Dara, who was handed the captain's armband in the absence of the benched Livermore. He was the consummate professional and showed great desire to add to Albion's tally at the death when a combination of him and a defender met the ball.

Jayson Molumby 8

Brought back into the side and partnered Okay from the off. Was everywhere and worked incredibly hard to revive attacks. Brought plenty of energy from minute 1 to minute 90 and possesses a nasty side that fans like.

League 1

Kieran Sadlier 4

Booked in closing stages and didn't make a great impact.

Mark McGuinness 8

An assured debut from the Cardiff City man on the left of the back three. Did his defensive duties with a minimum of fuss and looked calm on the ball.

Harry Charsley 7

Impressed on the opening day against Fleetwood. The fact he has struggled for game time since then shows the strength in depth of the Vale midfield.

Jason Knight 8

You can see why Rosenior wants to keep Knight at right-back. Dovetails really well with Mendez-Laing on that right-hand side.

Eiran Cashin 7

Might have had a goal if he controlled his effort a little bit better. Defended very well and was part of the build-up a lot.

Conor Hourihane 7

Not as influential as he might have hoped. Had a couple of chances from distance in the first half.

James Collins 6

Yet to find his shooting boots but he is getting into those areas and still causing defenders a world of hassle.

Warren O'Hora 7.5

A confident and assured outing after signing his new contract. Didn't put a foot wrong.

Conor Grant 6.5

Showed some good touches but too few and far between. Measured his pass to Robson for the goal really well though.

Jack Taylor 9

The second imperious midfield performance in a matter of days from a player revelling in the extra time and space at this level. Pretty much foot perfect on and off the ball.

Glenn Whelan 5

Was the enemy of the home fans when his challenge on Louis Thompson led to what looked like a serious injury for the Portsmouth midfielder. It was a forceful challenge, and it had significant consequences, but it did not appear to meet the typical criteria for a red card, catching Thompson on the side of the leg and the studs were not used. Taken off at half-time.

Joe Rafferty 8

Been a really impressive start to the Scouser's Pompey career and he continued in the same vein. Tenacious defensively and a constant option down the right.

Sean Raggett 5

Put in a typically robust display which was undone when he was caught napping and dispossessed by Marquis for the visitor's leveller. The former Blues striker had been in his pocket until that point.

Ronan Curtis 8

Really impressed as he was used at the top of the pitch with Colby Bishop. Set the tone for Pompey's pressing while causing his fair share of problems when in possession, but should have done better with one second-half chance.

Marcus Harness 7

Involved early, turning a corner wide and having another low effort saved, on an afternoon where he worked extremely hard, linked play really nicely and showed that his partnership with Davis could potentially be a really profitable one for Ipswich. His link-up with John-Jules was positive, too.

Scottish Premiership

Jake Doyle-Hayes 6

Restored to the starting XI, he was tidy enough in midfield and did not allow a first-half yellow-card to stymie his combative instincts. Came off for Lewis Miller in the latter stages on game.

Jonny Hayes 7

Jonny Hayes marked the weekend win with his 300th appearance for the club. Goodwin joked that he was sick of “blowing smoke up Jonny’s backside every week” but the influence of the Irish winger is clear to see, all the more so when it is a team of individuals that needs to come together to form a cohesive unit. Hayes’ celebrations at full-time were enthusiastic enough to belie his 35 years as were the sprints on the flank he was still putting in as the game neared to its closure. Hugging Ross McCrorie and then Lopes, whom he had a few pointers to offer, Hayes showed why he can be such a critical part of Aberdeen this term given the influence and experience that he exerts.

Don't see anyway paying the money Derby would want now when they could get him cheaper in January or even on a pre contract if teams outside England become interested in Jan.

Championship

Callum O'Dowda 5

Struggled to impose himself on things as he usually would. Being greeted by boos every time he touched the ball didn't help. Put in a lovely cross for Ojo, who scored but was offside.

23/8/22

EFL Cup

Mark McGuinness 7

Has seamlessly slotted into the back three. Won his fair share of headers and was aggressive in the tackle. Taken off in a tactical switch at half-time.

Josh Cullen 7

Quietly effective in the middle and helped Burnley control the contest for large periods.

Dara Costelloe 6

Youngster came on late and was steady.

Kieran Sadlier 5

Went to right wing-back after coming on in closing stages.

Jason Knight 8

Was released from his position at right-back to play in the midfield position which is a natural fit and he revelled in it. Nice, bright and sharp around the box.

David McGoldrick 8

His first start of the season and showed care, vision and quality in the final third. Gives Derby's attack a different dimension when he's in this kind of form.

Conor Hourihane 7

Looked lively when he came on.

James Collins 6

Showed one or two neat touches.

Dara O'Shea 5

Not as commanding or as reassuring as he has been in the league of late, perhaps that's natural in an entirely different team. Didn't close down Sibley quickly enough as he picked his spot.

Callum Robinson 4

Picked up plenty of decent positions in and around the penalty area, but he was nowhere near as clinical as Albion needed him to be when he was granted the opportunity to find the target.

Gavan Holohan 6

Had some good forward runs playing in the more advanced role but could not find the killer pass when presented the opportunity.

Nathan Collins 7.5

The Irishman has been very impressive since arriving at Wolves in July, and he continued that trend with another good showing against Preston. He mopped things up at the back and defended very well.

Greg Cunningham 6

Took a booking in the first half and Wolves' speed was tough for him at times. Tidy enough on the ball.

Alan Browne 6

Came on and looked assured on the right side. Then went into midfield and did fine.

Troy Parrott 6

Brought on for the final 15 minutes and he created the massive chance for Potts at the back post, after a clever run to peel off the defender.

Shane Duffy 4

Tried in vain to rally the Fulham defence into some sort of organisation. Ponderous on the ball, and every pass back to Marek Rodak gave me shivers. Showed some character in the second half, and at times looked like he was on a one man mission to dribble through the entire Crawley defence.

Mazeed Ogungbo 8

Couple of key interceptions in the opening minutes and defended well against Fossey who was bright early on. Got forward to put in an inviting cross that Nadesan couldn’t direct home.

Ronan Curtis 8

Back at home on the left where he ruthlessly exposed Newport’s first-half naivety with his hard running and quality finishing.

Sean Raggett 5

Replaced Robinson as he was eased back in, but picked up a booking and couldn’t do anything to stop the winner.

Ben Greenwood 6

Didn't enjoy the start he would have wanted on his debut, having been booked just eight minutes into the game. Caught out of position occasionally during the first half, but toed the line well after the break. His confidence was boosted after he stepped into a tackle well and played a pass into midfield. Unfortunately involved in the second goal, with Norwich slicing their way down the left to score.

Jack Taylor 6

It was a surprise to see such a key man start and he had to tread carefully after collecting a second minute caution. He looked sharper than most, apart from his shooting.

EFL Cup

Ed McGinty 5.5

His botched clearance and booking early on showed his decision-making still needs work. Distribution ranged from excellent to exasperating and flapped at a couple of crosses.

James Golding 7.5

Pushed high and gave fellow teenager Rodney a tough time on United's right. His positivity helped fashion a couple of chances, while there were some important defensive contributions too.

Warren O'Hora 8.5

Brilliant again. Ruled the backline, never missed a challenge, stepped in at key moments, made big blocks. A real captain's performance.

Dawson Devoy 8

Gave the fans even more reason to sing his name. Excellent from box-to-box, great touches, good eye for a pass and an assist to his name.

Darragh Burns 9 - Star Man

A goal and an assist in front of family and friends, but was an all-round nuisance to the Watford defence, a handful and a problem throughout. The best Dons performance all season.

24/8/22

EFL Cup

Conor McCarthy 5

Conceded a penalty for a despairing late challenge on Sinisterra and error led to third.

Evan Ferguson 7

Initially he worked hard but was at times well shackled by Rovers' defence. Showed his distribution skills when he set up Undav for what should have been 3-0. Still, a solid display and brought others into the game. Right at the death, got his goal with a close-range finish.

Andrew Moran 6

Showed he has twinkling, dancing feet and has wonderful balance on the ball. Just couldn't quite get into the game as much as he would have liked in attacking areas.

25/8/22

Conor Coventry 5

There was also a runout in midfield for Coventry alongside Downes. Ran about and made himself tough in tackling.

John Egan 6

Perhaps could've organised his defence better for Morris' first half goal but provided the assist for McBurnie's equaliser with a smart header.

27/8/22

Premier League

Gavin Bazunu 7.5

Made a great save to keep out Anthony Elanga on 19 minutes and also denied Scott McTominay’s volley in the second half. Could do little about the goal.

Mark Travers 3

A horror afternoon for the Cherries’ first-choice goalkeeper, made worse by the fact that he was not culpable for any of the nine goals. There was little he could have done for the first two, and before the hosts ran riot, he denied them with several superb saves to take away a degree of credit. To ship as many as he did will hurt him, however.

Sam Szmodics N/A

Taken off after almost 20 minutes following a series of collisions with Stoke players. Hopefully, nothing too concerning.

Jack Bonham 7

Smart save running out to stop Brereton-Diaz in first half and good save to stop Dack in second.

CJ Hamilton N/A

Brought direct running power and allowed Bowler a free role in the latter stages.

Callum O'Dowda 6

Was clearly targeted by Preston due to his status as a makeshift left-back. Certainly looked a little awkward defensively, but made some positive contributions going forward, producing a couple of promising cross-field balls.

Greg Cunningham 6

Passing was hit and miss but stuck to his position and helped see a clean sheet over the line. Got forward right at the end and caused problems with a low, driven cross after an overlapping run. Was beaten a couple of times one-versus-one.

Robbie Brady 5

Lacked his usual quality on the ball and struggled defensively on a couple of occasions in the first half, but kept working up and down the left flank. PNE were looking to him all game to unlock the door; they just couldn't get the Irishman on the ball, in good enough areas, anywhere near enough.

Alan Browne 5

A frustrating afternoon for the skipper. Took too long on the edge of the box with a first half chance and saw very little of the ball before being taken off just after the hour. The two starting attacking midfielders struggled to get up close to Parrott.

Troy Parrott 5

So isolated in the first half, with nobody in yellow close enough to him. Kept making himself available and making the runs, but Kipre had him in the wars and Parrott cut a frustrated figure. Had one moment in the second half but his shot was blocked after the Irishman cut inside.

Dara O'Shea 4

Shocker of a first half from O'Shea, who once again was the captain in Livermore's absence. Exposed by the midfield but Anjorin got the better of him and that seemed to knock his confidence.

Jayson Molumby 6

Didn't impact the game in the first half and Huddersfield certainly won the midfield battle, but the second half was more like Molumby. He was tigerish and expended all his energy in trying to keep pressure on regain possession.

Darragh Lenihan 7

Another really solid and commanding performance at the back. Two excellent blocks in either half.

Ryan Manning 5

More threatening in attack after switching to left wing-back, but final ball was lacking.

Michael Obafemi 5

Poor shot at goal just before Middlesbrough's opener and didn't get a sniff after that despite his good work-rate.

Jeff Hendrick 7.5

Worked so hard in the midfield to press the Millwall players and provided an outlet higher up the pitch. Missed a golden opportunity to score early in the second half when he was played in by Ince but he fired straight at the keeper.

Shane Long 5

Came on for Joao for the latter stages. Prodded wide when clean through on goal.

Scott Hogan 5.5

Totally peripheral in opening 45, made a few runs down the channel but even when Blues found him there was little he could do to make an impact. Had a chance early in the second period, which if he takes changes the game. Worked hard but needs to produce when the chance arises.

Jimmy Dunne 7

Saved his central defensive partner’s blushes with a covering tackle in the first half after Dickie was caught with the ball high up the pitch. Given a real test by the dangerous Ken Sema but did well overall on a tough afternoon for the centre-backs.

Sinclair Armstrong 6

Came on for the final 10 minutes and helped close out the win by giving Watford’s defenders something to worry about.

Josh Cullen 8

Outstanding in the first 45 minutes and retained the ball well after the break.

Chiedozie Ogbene 8

Troubled Blues repeatedly and won a penalty after being tugged back by Roberts. Continued his impressive start to the campaign. Millers need to keep hold of him and if they do that, it will be the best news in the final week of the window.

Andrew Omobamidele 8

League 1

Jason Knight 7

Returning to right-back, Knight slipped seamlessly into the role. Dealt well with Clarke-Harris on occasion when the service-starved striker pulled out to the left in search of some supply. Drove well with he ball down the right and revived a growing relationship with Barkhuisen down the right. Came up with the goods at the end with a bullet header.

Eiran Cashin 7

Kept his concentration well to come up with a pivotal header to deny Clarke-Harris from getting on the end of a dangerous delivery from the right just after the half-hour mark. Complemented Stearman well and was on hand for a vital last-ditch defensive clearance facing his own goalkeeper to prevent a one-on-one. On hand to clear a goal-bound effort off of the line after Clarke-Harris came close to scoring against the run of play with a back-post header.

Conor Hourihane 7

Orchestrated a neat corner-kick routine that presented Sibley with an open effort from inside the area that was well saved down low. Another corner tested Bergstom to the extent the Chelsea loanee almost parried into his own goal. After a litany of on-the-money set-pieces inside the opening ten minutes, his deliveries were hit-and-miss at best. Didn't really get a grip of the game in the centre. After a strong start from set-pieces, Hourihane pulled another crucial one out of the bag to set up Knight.

James Collins 5

Couldn't get into the game early on with chances almost exclusively falling to the attackers behind him. Lacked service aerially, but was unable to hold up play on the occasions that direct balls came into his chest, often being crowded out by a mass of Posh players. Became a bit more involved after the break, but his link play left a lot to be desired. Just wasn't his day in a Derby shirt.

David McGoldrick 7

Introduced straight away after Posh took the lead for the ineffective Collins. Made runs in behind to stretch the Posh defence and threatened to pull them out of place but did drop off and link proceedings better than his predecessor. Turned a Sibley cross-cum-shot at goal that Bergstrom kept out well before finally getting his rewards with the winner late on.

Jack Taylor 7

Cautioned for a succession of apparent fouls, but was playing well when sacrificed following Nathan Thompson's red card. He was missed.

Marcus Harness 7

Made a difference once he came on, picking up space in dangerous areas and testing the Barnsley back line. Had the ball in the net with an excellent finish, which would have put his side 3-1 up had he not been penalised for a foul on Liam Kitching. It was a poor decision from the referee, which effectively cost Ipswich two points. Harness is a threat.

Paudie O'Connor 5

Poor defending for the Fleetwood goal but defended well in the second half.

Sean Roughan 7

Assisted Bishop's second goal with a fine cross. Was substituted for Robson in the 68th minute.

Anthony Scully 7

Looked lively in the opening 45 minutes and played a role in the opening goal. Was substituted for Vernam.

Kieran Sadlier 6.5

Went to left wing-back to replace Iredale. Added some extra attacking impetus down that flank.

Joe Rafferty 7

Another proving to be a dependable presence and during one first-half moment covered superbly to thwart Harrison. Comfortable on the ball and rock solid at the back.

Sean Raggett 8

Lost centre-half partner Michael Morrison early on but shrugged it off to produce another commanding performance. The pick of the defence and comfortable all match.

Ronan Curtis 6

Replaced by Michael Jacobs on 65 minutes. Struggled to get involved consistently in proceedings, although always willing to track back to help defence. A first-half header and second-half blocked angled shot were best attacking moments.

Mark McGuinness 8

The Cardiff City loanee barely put a foot wrong. Rock solid showing. Has acquitted himself really well since moving to Hillsborough.

Scottish Premiership

Liam Scales 8

The best defender on the pitch; Scales was outstanding at the back as he cleared threat after threat when Livingston attacked in the opening half hour. Goodwin has talked about wanting to tie him down permanently, and this performance showed exactly why, as he makes himself undroppable from the defence.

Jonny Hayes 7

Hayes has been remarkable in recent games, and during this fixture he was exactly the same as he devastated the Livingston defence. Also unfortunate not to get an assist as his corners into Stewart were teeing him up perfectly, but nonetheless a fine display from the Irishman.

A 3 seems incredibly harsh on Travers given they felt that he a) wasn't to blame for any of the goals and b) made "several superb saves". But anyway...

League 1

James Golding 6

It was a tough ask for the 18-year-old to start a League One game in an unfamiliar position. Did not do anything wrong, but did not have much of an impact during his time on the pitch.

Warren O'Hora 7.5

Led the defence from the centre again, making key tackles and blocks.

Dawson Devoy 7

A strong first league start for the Irishman. Picked up clever spots and found space in front of the defence to turn the ball over and into attack. A solid hour on the pitch.

Conor Grant 8

A goal and an assist to his name, was involved in almost everything Dons did in attack.

Darragh Burns 7

Looked eager to impress as ever, but saw the game largely unfold on the opposite flank.

28/8/22

Premier League

Nathan Collins 7

The Irishman made an uncharacteristic error which almost cost Wolves right at the beginning of the match. But Collins regained his composure to produce another good performance. He made lots of blocks and clearances, and had the measure of ex-Burnley teammate Wood, before a few hairy moments at the end as Newcastle applied some pressure.

Scottish Premiership

Jamie McGrath 5

Some nice feet but couldn't get anything going.

30/8/22

Premier League

Gavin Bazunu 7

Wasn't overly busy but looked confident whenever called into action.

Championship

Scott Hogan 6.5

Him using his body to nudge defenders out of the way is becoming a regular thing. Ran off the ball well but when it got to him his touch let him down in the first period. It didn't at the start of the second though, he was in the perfect place to score his second of the season. Worryingly he was subbed soon after.

Andrew Omobamidele 8

Josh Cullen 7

Broke up play well when required and is metronomic in the give and go stakes.

Dara Costelloe 6

Back in the squad and off the bench for final 10 minutes.

Jimmy Dunne 7

Another very solid showing from the big Irishman. Cleared his lines when he had to, as he and Dickie dovetailed well at the back. However, he and his central defensive partner will be disappointed by a late Hull strike to prevent a clean sheet.

Sinclair Armstrong 6

Came on for final 10 minutes and gave the tiring Hull defence a hard time as he crashed and bashed his way into the game to help his side keep the ball down the right end of the field after Hull’s late goal gave them hope.

Cyrus Christie 5

Looked rusty, but didn't get a huge amount of support in the first half from Longman and was therefore exposed with too much regularity.

John Egan 7.5

Was indebted to his partner Norrington-Davies for bailing him out of trouble after a poor pass into midfield, and then a missed challenge, presented Reading with a superb chance to equalise in the first half. Recovered after that in fairness and the visitors didn't have much more of a sniff.

Dara O'Shea 6

His sabbatical to right-back lasted just twenty minutes before he was shuffled back inside when Ajayi was withdrawn. Was collected under pressure though there was one moment of miscommunication with Button.

Jayson Molumby 6 (Star Man)

Demanded more from his teammates when winning a ball high, which was refreshing, but then perhaps his style of play was costly as he went into the book when catching Power late.

Darragh Lenihan 6

Difficult evening as Boro struggled to plug gaps and stop the pace and power of Watford's attack before he then got injured.

Good service, YTM. Thanks for it.

If it wasn't for you, boring old scorers like Hogan would barely get a mention. But the earth will tremor when Parrott finally scores. And did you notice, the walking tattoo got, as one poster informed us, an "assist to an assist" somewhere in Italy?

I was too young to remember Italia 90 but I imagine it'll be like that on the streets of small town Ireland when Parrott scores a Championship goal. People hanging out of cars waving Preston flags, people hanging off lampposts, people singing and such.

It will be nothing compared to the scenes in Mr. Bricks head when Connolly nets his first for Venezia!

Scottish League Cup

Liam Scales 8

Scales loves having a go at playing a killer ball forward, and that was the same once again, but the highlights came in defence as he swatted almost every threat clear.

Aberdeen need to tie him down permanently because it's becoming evident that he is the make-or-break man in defence.

Jonny Hayes 8

Bagging the assist for Besuijen's second, Hayes was the difference maker in this Aberdeen side after coming on for the second-half.

A true monster for Annan to deal with and a real leader on the park as he brought the experience that was needed to see out the result.

31/8/22

Premier League

Nathan Collins 8

Collins was very impressive in the heart of Wolves' back-line and his partnership with Kilman is going from strength to strength. The Irishman mopped up at the back and played out with class and precision.

Championship

Greg Cunningham 8

Saw a fizzed shot saved in the first half from distance and played a big part in the defensive effort. Rarely put a foot wrong one-versus-one and looked assured in the main.

Robbie Brady 8

Brilliant set piece delivery throughout and whipped in some wonderful crosses. Ran his socks off for the cause and showed his quality and experience in the closing stages. Switched to the right and did a job for the team after Fernandez replaced Potts.

Troy Parrott 7

Constantly on the move in the final third and showed his ability to naturally drive forward with the ball again. Carried a threat but lacked the killer instinct on one or two occasions. His trickery led to the goal and he was brought down by the goalkeeper in the first half. Mature display again up top for the team.

Alan Browne 6

Had to get used to pace of game off the bench but battled away in there and helped see the win over the line. Linked play together in the final third in the build up for the goal.

Jack Bonham 6

Continued chance to stake his claim to be number one. Decent save low down from Piroe in second half.

Will Smallbone 8

Helped to change the game with a couple of clever crosses, including for the equaliser.

Mark Sykes 8

Played with excellent intensity throughout, tenacious in the tackle and a constant threat behind Josh Ruffels. Provided a number of threatening crosses into the Terriers box.

Scottish League Cup

Jamie McGrath 6

His corner led to the first goal but was pretty quiet in general play.

Championship

Dara O'Shea 4

Part of the high line which got Albion into trouble with Tella and allowed Rodriguez to open the scoring. Missed a sitter when teed up by Yokuslu and got away with what looked like a strong hand-ball shout.

Jayson Molumby 6

Gives his all in each game, of that there is no doubt. Heeded the call of the Brummie Road to shoot when on the edge of the box, but they'll wish they'd never bothered.

Josh Cullen 5

Wasn't able to offer enough protection with Clarets second best in midfield but kept at it.

3/9/22

Premier League

Nathan Collins 7.5

Collins was a little bit lax in possession on a couple of occasions, but there can be no doubting his defensive qualities. We must remember that Collins hasn’t long turned 21 and is still learning the game, even if the early signs suggest Wolves have a potential star on their hands.

Gavin Bazunu 5

Not his best game in a Southampton shirt. Didn't look comfortable dealing with Sasa Kalajdzic and stayed on his line for most corners and free-kicks in the first half.

Championship

Mark Sykes 8

Another performance to show why he is keeping Kane Wilson on the bench. Worked so hard out on the right. Dropped deeper in the second half but another excellent showing.

Callum Robinson 5

Looked bright when he first came on after the break and was a willing runner, but couldn't make that telling impact.

Andrew Omobamidele 8

Greg Cunningham 5

Napping for the goal and Birmingham caused problems down that side in the first half. Was more on the ball and front foot in the second half, winning his 50-50s and playing the ball forwards.

Robbie Brady 5

Put another big shift in for the team and the responsibility to find the answer, again, seemed to always be on him. North End kept getting it to him wide, but his crossing was hot and cold and the Irishman sometimes took too long in possession. Saw a second half shot saved from the edge of the box. Questionable for the goal too.

Alan Browne 5

Played Riis through on goal early on but struggled to get himself into the rest of the half. Upped his energy at the start of the second half and won the ball back well a few times, but then drifted in and out of play. Replaced on 73 minutes.

Troy Parrott 5

Threatened again in the final third but lacked the conviction and confidence when the chances came along. No clear-cut, glaring opportunities, but you wanted him to do more in the final third. Worked hard once again; his display didn't lack any graft.

Scott Hogan 7

Played his part in the goal, making the run and feeding Graham to cross the ball. He continued in that vein, working hard off the ball. Subbed late on having put in a real shift for his team.

Ryan Manning 8

Against his former club, the Irishman made some important interceptions and linked up nicely with Jamie Paterson on the left. Did well in his battle with former Swan Ethan Laird.

Armstrong Oko-Flex 6

Making his debut for the club, the West Ham loanee work tirelessly and helped Swansea to see out the game away from their own goal.

Jimmy Dunne 6

Adjudged to have hand-balled a Ryan Manning cross to concede a penalty, which was saved by Dieng. With Rangers dominant in the second half he had little to do defensively but did look more confident bringing the ball out than in previous games.

League 1

Marcus Harness 8

Looked the most-likely of the starting attackers to make something happen during the 90 minutes, with his hard work, clever touches and drive an important element of the Ipswich performance. He freed Kayden Jackson well to fire in a shot which should have hit the net. He was overshadowed by Chaplin in the end, but this was a very good display from the Ipswich attacker.

Trevor Clarke 6

Unlucky to see his volley denied by Ripley.

Paudie O'Connor 3

Really poor first half. Lacked physicality, made lazy passes and committed some silly fouls. Second half wasn't much better and picked up a yellow card to top it off.

Sean Roughan 4

Some good moments of defending but overall, poor set-piece taking and passing was off the mark.

Jason Knight 7 (Star Man)

Looked to have provided the game's turning point in the first half when he made an incredible goalline block to deny Joe Edwards only for Plymouth to hit back strongly. The best Derby player.

Eiran Cashin 4

Had a brilliant opening 45 minutes but was forced onto the back foot in the second half as Plymouth assumed control of the game and it was his mistake that led to the winner.

Conor Hourihane 4

There were a couple of glorious passes in the first half that showcased what the Republic of Ireland international is about, but couldn't influence the game.

David McGoldrick 7

Has the ability to remain calm and composed in the most frenetic of situations. The pass which allowed James Collins to score his first goal for the club was perfect.

James Collins 6

Took his goal brilliantly and, as expected, Pride Park erupted when he netted his first goal of the season. Looked a bit weary in the second half and was replaced.

Mipo Odubeko 7

Tested keeper Luke Southwood with a viciously swerving effort from the edge of the area before beating the keeper with a fine header. Impressive league debut for the on-loan West Ham striker.

Joe Rafferty 8

Oozes quality at right-back and uses the ball so well. Rock solid and brings such composure, with a knack of balling testing balls into the box.

Sean Raggett 8

Another towering display, epitomised by throwing himself on the ball and blocking it during one stoppage-time scramble in Pompey’s box. Over his injury concerns and as good as ever.

Ronan Curtis 8

Went close with great early shot and almost scored with header from close range in really good first half. Bit quieter after the break but can be pleased with showing.

Jack Taylor 8

The central midfielder continues to look strong and classy at this level. A couple of late strikes at goal were disappointingly wayward though.

Mark McGuinness 5

Probably the pick of the bunch in defence. Did his job with a minimum of fuss. Came off just after the hour mark as Wednesday threw caution to the wind.

Conor McCarthy 7

Linked well with Aitchison and could be pleased with his efforts.

Luca Connell 8

Impressive in the middle. Copped a first-half booking. Set up second goal.

4/9/22

Championship

Jack Bonham 4

Diabolical mistake for opening goal changed whole match. Brave to dive at Ince’s feet in second half.

Will Smallbone 5

Drifted in and out of the game. Shifted from right of midfield three to number 10 but chances were limited in final third.

Jeff Hendrick 8

Ran his socks off in the middle of the park. Clever at finding spaces to make himself available for passes and pressed the Stoke players hard.

Shane Long 7

Back in the starting 11 for the first time in three matches. Missed a glorious opportunity towards the end of the first half when he guided the ball over the bar when it looked easier to score.

CJ Hamilton 6

Provided a direct outball but could've made better decisions when he had the ball.

Sean McLoughlin 5

A big moment for McLoughlin having not played much recently, and will have been pleased to get a few minutes, at least.

John Egan 7

Had the Championship's leading scorer to contend with and other than the chance from Norwood's mistake Estupinan didn't see much of goal. Egan then used his experience well to apply pressure on Longman when he had a chance in the second half and did enough to force him to fire wide.

Championship

Will Smallbone 7

Played a useful role in the final third with some clever passes and he should have been on scoresheet early in second half.

Callum O'Dowda 7

An absolute terror out wide in the first half, but just appeared to run out of steam a little in the second half. Fitness perhaps not quite there yet. Took his goal nicely.

Callum Robinson 7

Absolutely superb on the edge of the box with his back to goal. Can't argue with two assists. Constantly looked like he wanted the ball at every possible opportunity. Looked a little isolated after the break, mind.

Ryan Manning 7

The Irishman was a real bundle of energy on the left flank and impressed both defensively and in attack. Good shift.

John Egan 7

In a defence that looked unsure at times, Egan was the one constant in the middle. Appeared to win every header, got in some crucial blocks and defended well.

Greg Cunningham 6

Gave it his all up against dangerous and powerful forward players. Did okay. Couldn't really utilise his technical ability to help PNE play out from the back.

Robbie Brady 6

Started quite brightly but struggled defensively on a few occasions with the pace of Benson. His quality of delivery led to the goal and had a couple of forays down the left, but spent most of his hour defending.

Troy Parrott 4

Kept running up there but just couldn't get into the game. His poorest outing so far but the service to him and Riis was pretty much non-existent.

Alan Browne 6

Had a volley from distance saved and a header from Evans' cross after attacking the box. Impacted the game a little bit.

Josh Cullen 7

Started most Burnley attacks and found space at will.

League 1

Mipo Odubeko 5.5

Had two decent chances before the break but fired too close to the keeper with the first and sent the second just wide of the far post.

Sean Raggett 8

Won absolutely everything in the air and an absolute rock. Another magnificent season brewing from the outstanding defender.

Ronan Curtis 8

Couldn’t buy a foul first half as Burton targeted him, but showed maturity to carry on and produce another good display.

Marcus Harness 7

Always available when Town were purring during the early stages, as balls were popped into his feet in open space, allowing him to turn and drive at goal. Showed his ability in tight situations as he played a clever one-two with skipper Morsy for the opening goal and was part of the move which led to Ipswich’s second. Replaced with 20 minutes remaining.

Trevor Clarke 6

Played on the left of midfield but found himself as an extra full-back in the opening quarter with Ipswich dominant, but he became more effective as the half wore on and went close to equalising in first-half stoppage time, but he was denied by Christian Walton's fingertips. Delivered a dangerous cross in the direction of Saunders that led to a chance for Hoole on the follow-up before the Irishman was substituted.

Glenn Whelan 6

The game was beyond Rovers when Whelan was brought on for Evans with Saturday in mind.

Jason Knight 3

Diamond proved too quick for him inside the box. Debate will rage over the penalty, but Derby put themselves in that position because of a careless pass in midfield. Had a volley saved by Carl Rushworth.

Eiran Cashin 3

Like Davies, didn't really enjoy being pressed and Lincoln smelled blood when the centre-backs had it. Made a fine tackle to deny Diamond in the first half.

Conor Hourihane 4

Had a shot saved by Carl Rushworth and the midfielder had one or two moments when he showed his quality, but Derby have to find a way to get him on the ball more.

James Collins 3

Had a goal disallowed for offside which he took really well but never had a sniff after that. Had desire to win possession but that did lead to some needless free-kicks. Needs to be smarter in that respect.

David McGoldrick 3

Struggled to get up to the speed of the game.

Warren O'Hora 7

Stepped in at the right times, made some good interceptions and read play well.

Dawson Devoy 4.5

Was always an available option, but wasn't forceful enough. Gave away the penalty somewhat needlessly, and couldn't spark anything meaningful thereafter.

Josh Kayode 5.5

Suffered the same fate as Dennis and Grigg really - didn't see enough of the ball to be able to make much difference.

Darragh Burns 5.5

Took a couple of heavy hits in his short time on the field, again, with no reward or joy.

Kieran Sadlier 6

Played in the final third after coming on. Saw goal chalked off for offside.

Mark McGuinness 7

Another steady performance from McGuinness. Marked the dangerous Stockdale out of the game. Won the majority of his aerial duels. Booked.

Jack Taylor 5

A huge disappointment. Given so much time and space on the ball, particularly in the first half, and yet passed poorly and shot wildly.

Finn Azaz 7

Almost opened the scoring in the first half when he got on the end of a corner from Adam Randell which had clearly been worked upon on the training ground but his drive was beaten away by the Oxford 'keeper.

Jordan Shipley 6

As always, battled and tried to get on the ball at every opportunity - but tired before coming off. Caused a few issues for Exeter and is forming a decent partnership with Bayliss in midfield.

14/9/22

Championship

Jimmy Dunne 8

A game that the big Irishman revels in. Dominated in the air, as Milwall struggled to build anything of note, and was a delighted figure at the final whistle after helping his side to first clean sheet.

Andrew Omobamidele 7

Mark Sykes 8

Took a while for him to grow into the game but was excellent overall. Was busy in and out of possession and was a constant threat down the right side.

Chiedozie Ogbene 9 (Star Man)

Searing burst of pace announced himself. Soon after, he scored a deft touch with his head to notch his fifth goal of a handsome season. Irrepressible.

Georgie Kelly 7

First Championship goal.

Jeff Hendrick 3

Did very little to impact the game. A player of his experience needed to give the team a lot more defensive cover and attacking threat.

Dara O'Shea 4

Nutmegged by Bacuna as Hogan hit the front early doors. Struggled to cope with the mobility of Hogan and the physicality of Deeney for most of the evening.

Jayson Molumby 7

His kind of atmosphere. Tenacity in abundance, but it didn't spill over and he channelled his energy. Delivered a superb through ball, balanced perfectly, for Wallace's equaliser.

Scott Hogan 10 (Star Man)

Not normally a word you'd associate with Hogan - but he was clinical. But the goals were just the icing on a cake laced with energy and commitment. His best performance in a Blues shirt and played like an international striker.

Premier League

Gavin Bazunu - 5

Didn't have much to do early on in the first half though was called into action more as the game wore on. Pulled off some good saves at close range but was beaten when Jacob Ramsey fired home from inside the box after a corner.

More worryingly will be the Irishman's distribution though, which was poor for much of the game at Villa Park.

17/9/22

Premier League

Nathan Collins 3

Collins actually defended reasonably well in the opening exchanges and positioned himself well to clear a couple of City crosses. But the awfully timed challenge on Grealish which led to his needless red card cannot be excused.

Championship

Ryan Manning 9 (Star Man)

Made a mockery of his Ireland snub with another impressive display. Defensively sound and caused plenty of problems in attack, playing a key role in some big Swansea chances. Got the goal to put the Swans ahead as part of what was a brilliant display.

Cyrus Christie 5

The bright spot for him was the warm reception he got from his former fans.

Scott Hogan 7.5

The one outfield player who looked as bright as he did the other night, making runs, winning duels and using the ball well. No service in front of goal in the first 45 though. His one opening after the break came from a Bacuna cross. Got it on target but well saved. He goes on international duty in good form.

Josh Cullen 6

Mops up well and made a vital block in the closing stages.

Mark Sykes 6

Similar to Dasilva, found it tough in the opening stages against Tella but gave Vyner better protection later in the first half. Almost assisted Wells with a cross from deep.

Callum O'Dowda 6

Was a reasonable threat all afternoon. Moved to wingback after Nkounkou's withdrawal, which actually made Cardiff look better defensively.

Callum Robinson 6

A really, really poor penalty miss, but recovered quite well. Was the focal point in attack for much of the afternoon, although he seldom looked like scoring. Looked desperate to get on the ball and rectify his earlier miss, and that in itself deserves credit.

Danny McNamara 6

On for Honeyman after 78 minutes. Put in a curling cross that Styles couldn’t quite get enough on.

CJ Hamilton 6

Limited chance to make an impression.

Andrew Omobamidele 5

Dara O'Shea 7

Mightily inventive way of getting his second goal of the season, pitching up at the back post with not a yellow shirt in sight. Talked through the game with partner Conor Townsend, and occasionally received a telling off from Bruce for the odd poor decision when in possession.

Jayson Molumby 7

Found Furlong on the run with one superb angled ball over the top of the Norwich defence. Ball carrying in the second half was very impressive. Another very sound shift from Albion's unsung hero this season.

Alan Browne 6

Put himself about and looked right up for it in the opening exchanges. Sent crosses into the box and got himself into final third while tracking back too. Drifted out of the game after the first goal, but saw a powerful shot well saved by Foderingham in the closing stages.

Troy Parrott 5

Busy in attack again and dropped in to try and link things up. Set up a chance for Whiteman in the first half, but didn't look overly dangerous in the final third - one deflected shot aside. A little bit confidence shot in front of goal, it seems.

Robbie Brady 5

Came on with 20 minutes to go but couldn't impact the game in the final third.

Sean Maguire 5

Played a few passes in the final third and had a shout for a penalty turned down.

John Egan 8

Strong in the middle of the back three. Had a lot to deal with but dealt with it well. Won his headers, produced a couple of blocks and deflected an effort that was heading for the target wide. Only mark against his name was when Johnson sold him a clean pair of heels and he had no choice but to pull him back and take the booking.

Will Smallbone 7

A couple of bright moments with neat control of the ball to create opportunities. Restricted more so after the break.

Jeff Hendrick 6

A better first half than in the loss to Sunderland, with calm passing and defending on display. Unfortunately though he wasted Reading’s first great chance of the match, slicing Yiadom’s dangerous cutback over from less than five yards.

Stepped up defensively in the second half when Reading held strong to win the three points, and made several clearances.

League 1

Kieran Sadlier - 5.5

Went to left wing-back after coming on. Booked before full-time.

Jack Taylor 6.5

Competed well, but Posh lost their grip on midfield towards the end of the first half and never regained it. Taken off late on.

Glenn Whelan 3

Asked to do a job at centre-back by his manager and he endured a really difficult start, with Jack Diamond speeding away from him before crossing for the opener, and then he was adjudged to have fouled Ben House for the penalty that made it 2-0. Whelen thought he was hard done by and it will be interesting to see the footage. As the game wore on, Rovers' defensive structure collapsed and although Whelan made a couple of interventions to prevent further damage, this afternoon went from bad to worse for the Gas. Not a specialist in the position, of course, but a really difficult afternoon.

Trevor Clarke 6

Offered good width on the left and delivered one or two crosses that led to chances. He could have done more with his opportunities to create. But he was a bright spark.

Eiran Cashin 7

Made a brilliant challenge on Mehmeti just before half-time and the back four dealt with the Wycombe attack well given Wildsmith was rarely troubled. Went close with a long-range effort Played a key role for the second goal.

Conor Hourihane 8 (Star Man)

Had that composure on the ball in the final third when he had the chance and his skills are so much better suited to the attacking third than a defensive position. His two goals were a masterclass in finishing.

Jason Knight 7

Was moved from right-back into a more advanced role in midfield. Showed one or two neat touches and was busy. Tried to lead the press on occasions.

David McGoldrick 7

Led the line up front and was denied by Stryjek in the second half. Almost caught out the goalkeeper with a lob in the first half, but it was tipped over the bar. Possesses such a good brain.

James Collins 6

Put himself about as soon as he entered the fray. Dropped into some good positions.

Sean Raggett 7

Denied a goal at one end by a handball and then the linesman, only to score own goal at the other. Solid game, though.

Ronan Curtis 6

Couldn't get involved in the game as Pompey suddenly found themselves behind.

Marcus Harness 6

On for Chaplin and saw the ball in some good areas but, notably, couldn’t latch onto a Freddie Ladapo flick-on on the edge of the Wednesday box. Gave away a few niggly fouls as he helped Ipswich try and see the game out.

Scottish Premiership

Liam Scales 4

Scales had a brilliant game up until the end of the first-half, but he has been done harshly by the referee for the penalty. It was a tough day at the office for the Irishman, but the two yellow cards hurt the side as a gaping hole was left in the defence when he went off.

Jonny Hayes 7

Hayes started brightly in the attack during the first-half but was then pushed deep by the Hibs attack when they gained the man advantage. He ecame a part of the collective group that struggled during the second-half but was on hand on occasions to push the attack on.

Championship

Jimmy Dunne 6

Not the most convincing in the first half against a physical Stoke side and struggled with the movement of the wily Dwight Gayle. Better after the restart and should have scored what would have been the winner but he headed an Ilias Chair cross straight at Bursik despite being unmarked in the box.

Chiedozie Ogbene 6

Not at his stellar best, but Boro were still wary.

League 1

Finn Azaz 6

His goal celebrations were cut short in the 31st minute after he was denied by an offside flag when he tucked away Joe Edwards's cross shot. Other than that, he was not too involved in Argyle's attacking play.

Warren O'Hora 7

Solid at the back, but let his eye off Joseph on a few occasions, allowing the striker too many sights of goal.

Dawson Devoy 7

Showed a lot of endeavour and determination in the centre of the park. Still getting to grips with the pace and force of the game but put in a tenacious performance.

Conor Grant 7

A lot of his work was done off-the-ball, pulling away and making runs to create space for others. Got stuck in when he needed too as well.

Josh Kayode 6

Was used as a runner more than anything with balls played over the top for him to chase with little gain.

Championship

Cyrus Christie 6

Curled one over the bar with 20 minutes go and helped lift a flat performance early on.

1/9/22

Premier League

Seamus Coleman 7

Recalled for his first Premier League outing of the season due to Nathan Patterson’s injury on Scotland duty, the evergreen captain got straight back to work like he’d never been away, marauding up the flank and defending resolutely.

Gavin Bazunu 6

Got down well to stop a cross from Demarai Gray midway through the first half that Conor Coady threatened to get on the end of. Held onto a shot from Gray well soon after that was straight at him but hit with power.

Needs to command his box better from set-pieces as shown by Conor Coady's goal but did well to stop Gray from making it 3-1 from a one-vs-one chance later on.

Matt Doherty 5

Tried to get Spurs going down the right but it was a tough ask with the numerical disadvantage.

Championship

Sam Szmodics 6

Came back into the matchday squad and will be happy to have found himself back on the pitch.

Andrew Omobamidele 6

Mark Sykes 6

Full of running and looked a threat down the right hand side.

Jimmy Dunne 7

Can feel somewhat hard done by to be dropped, but was called upon to close out the victory for the final 25 minutes after Clarke-Salter limped off, and did a good job.

Callum O'Dowda 6

A typically assured performance from the winger. He always looks capable of producing something when in possession and was more than helpful at the other end of the pitch.

Callum Robinson 7 (Star Man)

Had a number of chances early on but just couldn't find the net. Atoned for that, though, when he scored in the final minute to earn his side the point. Ran everywhere from minute one.

Josh Cullen 5

Started slowly and didn't have the influence we know he can.

Jeff Hendrick 8.5

Probably his best performance so far in a Reading shirt. Played a key role in the second role and almost got on the scoresheet late on when he fired narrowly wide from about 25 yards out.

Chiedozie Ogbene 6

James McClean denied him what looked a goal, other than that he ran the channels enthusiastically but to little effect.

John Egan 6

Solid at the back, won plenty of headers and was in the right position to clear from Graham in the first half with Hogan ready to pounce.

Scott Hogan 6.5

Put in what is now a typically industrious display, almost barged his way clean through on the half hour but the angle to cross for Deeney never opened up. Had a chance from Deeney's knockdown just after the break but couldn't apply a finish. All round a good effort though.

Greg Cunningham 6

Swept up and used the ball pretty well but Roberts caused him some problems on a handful of occasions.

Alan Browne 6

Put in a shift up and down the right flank and did combine well with midfielders on occasions. Wanted to get forward and ask questions - just lacked the killer final cross or pass.

Robbie Brady 6

Central. Good quality on the ball. Crossing. Tempo.

Troy Parrott 5

Came on and linked play up but couldn't provide the goal PNE were searching for.

Dara O'Shea 5

Might've scored very early - even before Swansea's opener - but his header was straight at Benda. Committed as ever but he's been at the heart of a defence which has conceded six goals in the last two Hawthorns outings.

Ryan Manning 8

the Irishman started very well and was pivotal to his side's best attacking play. Got the assist for his fellow wing-back's opener from a corner too. Good game management at the end.

Michael Obafemi 7

What an impact. So composed to rifle home the winner.

League 1

Eiran Cashin 8

Composed and diligent defensively in the first half and the young centre-back continues to grow in stature with every game he plays.

Jason Knight 7

Restored to the heart of midfield where his legs and energy make him a perfect fit for what Warne wants from this team moving forwards. Looked very sharp.

Conor Hourihane 7

Set-piece quality was decent and he had a shot saved by Dimi Mitov in the first half. Getting him into advanced positions on to that left foot adds so much to the Derby attack.

James Collins 9 (Star Man)

A brilliant performance from the striker who was here, there and everywhere. Was rewarded with his second and third goals of the season. The first was a lovely finish too, the second clinical. Outstanding from start to finish.

Marcus Harness 7

The attacker produced the calmest of finishes to give his side the lead against his old club, as he slotted home Chaplin’s through-ball. Battled away throughout his time on the pitch, keeping it well at times and losing it at others before being replaced.

Sean Raggett 8

The pick of the defence and an absolute colossus throughout, while also used the ball well on the ground including nice bit of skill in second half.

Ronan Curtis 7

Good introduction from the bench with energy and pressing and won the second penalty with his persistence.

Jack Taylor 8.5 (Star Man)

Oozed class throughout the game. The dominant player on the pitch. Took control of midfield with his positioning, his movement, his forward runs, his ball-winning and his passing.

Mipo Odubeko 6

Back from international duty and used up front with Harrison as Vale tried to get back into the game.

Finally, the local paper/website in Wigan doesn't usually do game by game player ratings, so there are never any to post for Keane and McClean, but they have this week done a report card for each player for the season so far. Here's what they said for the Irish lads.

JAMES McCLEAN: B - Mostly played out of position at left-back, curtailing his attacking instincts, but let no-one down, and near the top of the divisional tackling stats.

ANTHONY SCULLY: N/A - Made his debut off the bench against Reading, still very much an unknown quantity.

WILL KEANE: B - Last year's Golden Boot winner has undoubtedly found it tougher this time, but three goals already - which could have been more - underlines his importance and output.

(In terms of context, they didn't give out any A's at all.)

Paul Ince has historically been good for Irish players. Remember when he brought Keith Andrews with him from League Two to the Premiership when he was appointed Blackburn manager?!

Can you imagine something like that happening nowadays when we're lucky to have three players starting on a PL match day?

What a sliding doors moment that is BTW. We could've had a completely different midfield partnership under Trapattoni only for that huge show of faith.

Begs the question: who would've been Whelan's partner if Andrews stayed with MK Dons when they were promoted to League One?

League 1

Warren O'Hora 5

An unusually off-colour afternoon for the skipper on the day, struggling to keep tabs on any of the Peterborough front line.

Conor Grant 5

Had little to work with all afternoon but not for want of trying. Nothing worked out for him.

Dawson Devoy 5

Could do little to stem the tide of Peterborough attacks as they flowed forward with ease.

Josh Kayode 5

Still yet to really show what he can do in a Dons shirt. Balls were aimed near him, never to him.

Finn Azaz 6

Tried to make things happen for Argyle going forward when they did get the ball on the ground but it did not come off for him too often. Still, he played his part for 70 minutes in the Pilgrims negating the strengths of Wycombe before being substituted.

Scottish Premiership

Jonny Hayes 7

Decent outing for Hayes who is enjoying life with Coulson on the left-hand side of the pitch. Found himself in a brief tussle before being subbed, but was excellent in assisting Stewart for his first Reds goal.

2/10/22

Championship

Will Smallbone 5

Some ambitious shots but couldn’t feed the strikers.

4/10/22

Championship

Mark Sykes 6

Perhaps fortunate to keep his place and improved on Saturday's performance. Wasted a couple of good crosses but a lot more assured from a defensive perspective. Could have offered more going forward.

John Egan 5

Caught out of position in the first half after bringing the ball out from the back and had to take a booking when QPR broke. That meant he was unable to challenge Chair moments later when he skipped past him on his way to goal. Not strong enough moments later when Chair again got in behind but Berge came to the rescue.

Jimmy Dunne 9

A Herculean performance from the big Irishman. Completely vindicated Mick Beale’s decision to start him ahead of the fit-again Jake Clarke-Salter and Rob Dickie as he dominated in the air and defended superbly to help close out a fine victory for his side.

Callum O'Dowda 8

Another really positive outing for the winger. Defensively so sound and so trustworthy with the ball going forward. Was key to City's drive upfield.

Callum Robinson 8

Like a whippet running about that forward line and comfortably looked City's biggest scoring threat. A number of first-half chances were squandered though.

Sammie Szmodics 4

A rare start for Sammie. He struggled to have an impact, but not for a lack of trying. Was withdrawn for Bradley Dack around the midway point of the second half.

Jeff Hendrick 9

Terrific, hard-working display by the Irishman who scored his first goal for the club in brilliant fashion. Almost got on the scoresheet in the first half too when he skimmed the post with a fantastic half volley.

Andrew Omobamidele 6

League 1

Kieran Sadlier 3

Lost the ball to set up the Cheltenham goal but can't take all the blame with no one offering an option.

Marcus Harness 7

Had a quiet start to the match, but really began to impose himself as the first half wore on, especially and became more influential as the game continued.

Finn Azaz 7

Had the assist for Ryan Hardie's third minute opening goal with an excellent long pass for the striker to race onto and apply a clinical finish. Azaz also set up Hardie for a shot later in the first half which he blazed over the bar.

5/10/22

Champions League

James McCarthy 3

Was reportedly one Celtic were open to let leave on deadline day but a lack of midfield options saw him thrust in here late on.

Championship

Josh Cullen 6

Came close with driven effort just before half time and always neat and tidy on the ball.

Will Smallbone 6

Threw himself into a couple of challenges and tried to set Stoke breaks when possible.

Cyrus Christie 7

Looked a bit lost at times in an attacking midfield role early on but was always keen to stretch play and run his socks off and saw more involvement second half. Gave the side a different dimension on the flank and Wigan something different to think about.

Scott Hogan 5.5

Escaped with an excellent run and pass from Bielik on the quarter hour before being fouled. He had two chances to level though, one when he was clean through and another from Graham's centre - and wasted both. After being so clinical at West Brom, he was wasteful tonight.

Chiedozie Ogbene 5

Did not rule the roost as he has done in several home games this season. No lack of effort, just not his night.

Ryan Manning 8

Not his most accurate showing in possession in the first-half, although the Irishman was always a threat in attacking positions and pressed so well in the first-half. Great pass for Joel Piroe late on but got the assist he deserved for Cabango.

Michael Obafemi 7

On his first start for the Swans in more than a month, Obafemi pressed from the front and thought he had equalised in the first-half, only to be denied by the offside flag. Didn't really get any chances other than that but worked tirelessly, winning possession in good areas over and over again.

Greg Cunningham 6

Plenty of commitment and heart in his display but loose at times win possession and a little ropey with some of his defending. Saw the points home though and clean sheet too. Bust a gut to get his team up the pitch in the closing stages.

Alan Browne 5

Combined with Brady well early on and was positive with his passing down right. A little sluggish with some of his decision making and Diangana did cause him real problems.

Robbie Brady 6

Started the game well and created a couple of opportunities with his creativity and quality of delivery. Managed 75 minutes and gave it his all in a central role once again. Can be better on the ball.

Sean Maguire 7

Saw a header saved early on which he will have been disappointed not to convert, but he started the move for the goal a few minutes later. Sent a shot wide from 20 yards and linked PNE's play together well, like always. His first start of the season and 75 minutes in the tank.

Dara O'Shea 4

There was some dreadful defending on show in the opening ten minutes from Albion and O'Shea sadly was right at the heart of it, as McCann and Maguire both had attempts on Palmer's goal before Riis escaped him and Townsend to score.

Jayson Molumby 4

Particularly slow start and was turned too easily by McCann in the build up to Riis' goal. Conceded possession when miscontrolling the ball on the touch-line in the first half, but he did tee up a Grant half chance early on.

Is that really necessary for McCarthy? If he's not on the pitch long enough to be rated, just mark him N/A. 3 FFS.

7/10/22

Championship

Jimmy Dunne - QPR 8

Another strong display. Dovetailed well with Clarke-Salter to deal with Reading’s direct approach and needed to be alert during the opening 20 minutes of the second half when the visitors were on top.

Jeff Hendrick - Reading 7

Unable to repeat his midweek heroics, sadly. Gave the midfield some presence and energy without making any impact on the game.

8/10/22

Premier League

Joe Hodge - Wolves 6

A very comfortable Premier League debut in difficult circumstances for Hodge. He has jumped up the pecking order with a solid performance.

Gavin Bazunu - Southampton 5

Immediately called into action to deny Riyad Mahrez from close range. Could do little to stop the opening goal going in. Made a good stop to deny Phil Foden but was then chipped by the England international moments later for City's second. Pulled off an excellent stop to deny Erling Haaland midway through the second half as the striker tried to knock it round him. His hunt for a first clean sheet in Saints colours continues.

Matt Doherty - Tottenham 7

Rusty to begin with but plenty of good movement down the right and he bounced an early volley over from Sessegnon's cross. An important 90 minutes in his legs and he made a huge tackle to stop Trossard shooting from eight yards for what likely would have been a goal. He got a big hug from Dier after the challenge.

Championship

Scott Hogan - Birmingham 7

Looked as lively as ever, particularly sharp on the press and put Chong through with a well-weighted pass. Again the ball didn't find him in the box but that wasn't his fault he was in the right place nearly all of the time.

Mark Sykes - Bristol City 5

Form is starting to become a worry. Did manage to get some space out on the right but couldn't find the right delivery. Caught out positionally and came off at half-time.

Sam Szmodics - Blackburn 7

Didn't see much of the ball in the first half but was far more involved after the break. Could have scored with a header but put that disappointment behind him to set up Brereton Diaz's goal. Eventually got his own with a cool finish.

Chiedozie Ogbene - Rotherham 7

CJ Hamilton - Blackpool 6

Direct running caused issues at times.

Josh Cullen - Burnley 8

Lovely scooped pass for Tella opener and seemed to always have time on the ball, a strong showing.

Danny McNamara - Millwall 7

Did well defensively but just like Wallace on the left, his attacking output left a little bit to be desired. A back four should suit him but he can contribute more in the final third.

Darragh Lenihan - Middlesbrough 6

Solid defensively without being spectacular. Some clever balls out of the defence.

Andrew Omobamidele - Norwich 5

Greg Cunningham - Preston 7

Another big shift from him and he did a solid job back there. Tidy on the ball and linked up well with Fernandez and also Whiteman, to help PNE play out from the back.

Alan Browne - Preston 7

Battled on after Byram's horror challenge and played the full game. Carried a threat down the right, was involved in the first goal and was aggressive in his play down the right side.

Robbie Brady - Preston 8

Positive in his passing from the first minute and provided a terrific assist for Riis' first goal. His experience and calmness helped the team no doubt and it was gutting to see him forced off in the second half.

Sean Maguire - Preston 7

Solid first half display before being replaced at the break - surely as a precaution. Picked up clever pockets of space, made smart movement across the Norwich defenders and worked well with Riis, and the wing-backs, once again.

Troy Parrott - Preston 7

Replaced Maguire, who was playing well, but helped maintain PNE's threat and level of performance. Tested Krul with a volley and his strike led to the winning goal. Gutting hamstring injury when celebrating.

Will Smallbone - Stoke 7

Some neat play helped set up the first goal and a couple of other clever passes.

John Egan - Sheffield United 4

Beaten far too easily for Jagielka's goal. Outjumped by the former Blades' defender and didn't get off the ground. Had been down with an injury moments before then and was in real discomfort, hard to know if he was caught flat-footed or if he was struggling to jump, but either way the fact he didn't get off the ground allowed Jagielka to get his header in. Third goal came with both Egan and Basham cut apart and Delap had acres of space.

Ryan Manning - Swansea 8

The Irishman was a constant menace on the left wing and played a huge part in Swansea's opener. Good delivery in the build-up to Darling's goal too. In the form of his life right now.

Michael Obafemi - Swansea 6

Couldn't get on the ball as often as he'd have liked. Did his defensive duties well though.

Callum O'Dowda - Cardiff 8

A bit more of a defensive display at the start but then grew into it more as the game went on. Fantastic cross for Ojo's goal. A great player to have.

Callum Robinson - Cardiff 8

Displayed his quality again with a tremendous finish and set Harris up for his big chance. A blow when he came off before the break.

Dara O'Shea - West Brom 7

Saw an early free header from a corner go just wide. Kept Adebayo in check one-on-one and took the sting out of a potentially dangerous-looking effort in the second half which was tipped behind for a corner. That standout at the back beside his two more experienced teammates.

League 1

Eiran Cashin - Derby 6

Was unfortunate to lose out in the tackle that led to Vale's second goal which could have been avoided if Derby had just cleared their lines.

Conor Hourihane - Derby 5

Joined the attack when he could and had a header saved in the second half as Derby hunted a second goal before the game got completely turned on its head.

Jason Knight - Derby 5

Produced one cross that almost led to a goal for Lewis Dobbin and there was plenty of effort. Should have cleared his lines in the build-up to Vale's second goal.

James Collins - Derby 5

His third goal in two games and it was a hell of a finish too. Never easy striking a cross first-time, but technique was there for all to see. Was sent off in the second half. Got sucked in by Nathan Smith and paid for it. Shame because he was excellent until that point.

Paudie O’Connor - Lincoln 6

The Irishman was strong and committed in his challenges – solid game.

Sean Roughan - Lincoln 5

He was caught out a few times down the left of the Imps’ defence.

Danny Mandroiu - Lincoln 6

In his first start of the season, Mandroiu showed glimpses of the player he could be, however he is still a raw talent.

Richard Keogh - Ipswich 7

Making his full league debut for Town, Keogh was vocal in his organisation and was strong in defence. Reads the game so well as you would expect from such an experienced campaigner and was a key player in Town's second half revival.

Jack Taylor - Peterborough 8 (Star Man)

Looked the most impressive of the midfield. Showed his class at both ends of the pitch, stopping a couple of counters in the first half and also driving the side forward. Played a brilliant through ball that led to the goal.

Finn Azaz - Plymouth 6

Replaced Morgan Whittaker in one of the 'number 10 roles' in the 66th minute and played his part in Argyle's strong finish to the game.

Sean Raggett - Portsmouth 8

Gobbled up everything in the air without fail and also provided some good moments in distribution.

Ronan Curtis - Portsmouth 6

Tried to inject a bit of energy and urgency, yet made little impact.

Jordan Shipley - Shrewsbury 7

Good afternoon’s work for Shipley, got an important goal to double Town’s lead and put in a couple of good crosses which looked really threatening.

Warren O'Hora - MK Dons 5.5

Looked off-colour in the first-half as Dons defence looked frail. Recovered in the second period.

Dawson Devoy - MK Dons 4

Looked as though he was growing into the game in the second-half but his red card cost Dons the chance to get back into it.

Darragh Burns - MK Dons 5

By no means the worst player on the pitch, but was sacrificed at the break to change the system. Gave Dons a threat going forward.

Conor Grant - MK Dons 5.5

Pitched in with a few set-pieces to no avail.

Scottish Premiership

Liam Scales - Aberdeen 6

As a whole, the team struggled defensively in dealing with the likes of Watt. It wasn't a bad showing when shunted out to the left-back area, but not one to remember for the Celtic loanee.

Jonny Hayes - Aberdeen 6

Made a stellar run to try and tee up Miovski for a goal, but after the ending of the first 45 was unable to bring any significant influence into the game.

Jamie McGrath - Dundee United 9 (Star Man)

Arguably the Irishman’s best game for Dundee United so far. McGrath was everywhere in the first half and caused the Aberdeen backline countless problems. He continued to beaver away in the second half and topped off his evening, bagging his first goal for the club from the spot.

James McCarthy - Celtic 5

An often lamented figure was a huge factor in this match in just eight minutes. His unseen run and tackle played in Bernabei for Giakoumakis' cross. There's a player there yet.

9/10/22

Premier League

Seamus Coleman - Everton 6

Had his work cut out trying to shackle Marcus Rashford and found himself going backwards rather than forwards much more than at St Mary’s but this was still a determined Goodison Park return for the captain on a tough night.

Championship

Cyrus Christie - Hull 5

Found it difficult to get into the first half and the second was at right-back after the change. Not an afternoon he'll remember too fondly.

11/10/22

Championship

Sam Szmodics (Blackburn) 4

Played down the centre of the three-man attack and was totally dominated by the three centre-backs. His touch let him down as the half went on. Little surprise that he was hooked at the break.

12/10/22

Championship

Max O'Leary (Bristol City) 7

Alert to the danger in the first half when he came off his line to snuff out Maguire's chance. Brilliant save just after City's opener to deny Riis' effort with a strong right hand. Had no chance with the equaliser.

Mark Sykes (Bristol City) 7

Got into some really good crossing positions but his final ball let him down in the first half - that was until he played a pinpoint delivery for Atkinson to grab his first assist of the season.

Preston seemed happy to allow him to bomb forward and wasn't really troubled defensively. Justified keeping his place in the team.

Greg Cunningham (Preston) 6

Committed in his defending and no glaring errors over the piece, but will be frustrated by both goals. Helped Fernandez out in the early exchanges. Another 90 minutes in the tank.

Robbie Brady (Preston) 6

Started at right wing-back and then moved centrally. Had more of an impact in the middle and showed some nice touches after a slow start. His cross led to the goal. A bit erratic in some of his tackling.

Sean Maguire (Preston) 5

Inches away from latching on to a first-half through ball and sent an ambitious volley over, but fairly quiet other than that. Needed him to get hold of the ball a little bit more and provide the focal point he is capable of. Taken off at the same time as Johnson.

Alan Browne (Preston) 5

Came on at right wing-back but didn't get many touches. Lost Atkinson for the winner.

15/10/22

Premier League

Matt Doherty (Tottenham) 8

Could have pushed on more in the first half and did so in the second half, having the shot that Pickford spilled before bringing down Kane for the penalty. Much improved as the game wore on with plenty of runs forward, winning free-kicks and earning yellow cards for Everton players. Was involved in most things Spurs did well in the second half. Came off to a big hug from Conte and everyone on the Spurs bench.

Seamus Coleman (Everton) 6

The now 34-year-old Everton captain was up against it, operating on a flank where he faced both Heung-Min Son and Ivan Perisic and while he dealt with their dual threat manfully, he made way shortly after Kane’s penalty as the visitors chased the game.

Championship

Jimmy Dunne (QPR) 5

Had his hands full against the physical Carlton Morris and the Luton pressing game and should have done a lot better to stop the cross for Luton’s opener. Sustained a worrying-looking injury when he collided heavily with Dieng for Luton’s killer second goal which appeared to go in off his back.

Georgie Kelly (Rotherham) 8

What an introduction.

Max O'Leary (Bristol City) 6

Showed nice composure to come out his area to deal with a dangerous diagonal. Made a superb stop before the goal but had little chance with the rebound. Having re-watched the second, felt sympathy for his role having come off his line and was impacted by a marauding Tomas Kalas. A great penalty save at the end.

Mark Sykes (Bristol City) 6

Most notable contribution in the first half came when he cleared a goalbound header off the line. Almost assisted Semenyo in the opening couple of minutes.

Josh Cullen (Burnley) 8

Ticks the game over in the middle and set up fourth with a lovely pass. Stamped on by Piroe for striker's red card.

Michael Obafemi (Swansea) 4

Remarkably isolated throughout and was limited to pressing from the front, such was the lack of service to him.

Callum O'Dowda (Cardiff) 6

Plenty of energy, but little in the way of end product. Had a couple of sloppy moments, particularly defensively. Was inches away from giving his side the lead.

Callum Robinson (Cardiff) 6

Didn't show many signs of rustiness following his recent knock, but this was nevertheless a frustrating afternoon. Had the ball in the net. Not given. Thought he'd won a penalty. Not given. Should have scored late on. Fired over. Movement was brilliant at times, though.

Sam Szmodics (Blackburn) 6

Dropped into the midfield to help out and worked hard defensively.

Alan Browne (Preston) 6

Started the game well and put in a pretty solid first half, with his energy and aggression at the right level. Showed some sharp touches but drifted in the second half and made way after 70 minutes.

Robbie Brady (Preston) 5

Buzzed around in midfield and tried things, but a bit erratic in some of his play and couldn't provide that creative touch.

Sean Maguire (Preston) 5

Received the ball and looked after it a few times, but quiet on the whole and didn't really cause Stoke any problems.

Will Smallbone (Stoke) 8

Well-timed run into area to crack home first senior goal of his career.

Jeff Hendrick (Reading) 5

Costly mistake for Albion's second goal as his slip was pounced upon by Gardner-Hickman who went on to blast the ball home. Nearly grabbed a consolation shortly afterwards but stabbed his shot wide.

Dara O'Shea (West Brom) 8

Acquitted himself really well. Adopted his no nonsense approach which is usual and dominated compatriot Jeff Hendrick. A really good outing.

John Egan (Sheffield United) 5

Unfortunate to gift the third goal to Kenny Dougall after trying to intercept Charlie Patino's through ball.

League 1

Eiran Cashin (Derby) 7

Had a header in the first half that he should have at least hit the target with, but other than that defended with his usual composure and aggression. Excellent.

Jason Knight (Derby) 7

Plenty of energy in the middle of the pitch and got through a lot of work as Derby enjoyed the bulk of the possession particularly in the first half.

David McGoldrick (Derby) 6

Good to see him back and showed one or two neat touches.

Kieran Sadlier (Bolton) 5.5

Given chance in number 10 role. The odd spark in position.

Mark McGuinness (Sheffield Weds) 6

On for Smith on 68 minutes, prompting a system change and the same one they went with later on in the Cheltenham win; to a 3-5-2.

Comfortable in possession and shored things up.

Marcus Harness (Ipswich) 6

The best of Ipswich’s attacking trio, behind Freddie Ladapo, Harness was able to get himself in some good positions to turn and then drive towards the box. He won a couple of free-kicks in dangerous positions and linked well on the edge of the box. His big chance of the afternoon saw him fire over in the second half.

Paudie O'Connor (Lincoln) 8

Like his fellow defenders, O’Connor helped in delivering a simply outstanding display of grit and determination to hold Ipswich off.

Sean Roughan (Lincoln) 8

Roughan was fantastic, particularly in the first half. The left-back shackled Burns extremely well and provided an outlet down the flank.

Daniel Mandroiu (Lincoln) 7

Played well on the wing and linked up a couple of attacks. Found it hard to make an impact in the second half with Ipswich dominating much of the possession.

Mipo Odubeko (Port Vale) 6.5

Smart finish to get the Vale back into the game 12 minutes from time.

16/10/22

Premier League

Gavin Bazunu (Southampton) 6

Had very little to do in terms of making saves in the first half as West Ham didn't manage to put any of their ten efforts on target. Could also do very little about Declan Rice's equaliser as it flew past him into the bottom corner. The wait for a clean sheet goes on.

Championship

Cyrus Christie (Hull) 6

Flashed an effort wide just before the break. Again, some decent stuff from him when called upon.

Scott Hogan (Birmingham) 7

It was hard for him to make an impression in the opening 45 but to his credit he battled for the ball when it came near him. He continued doing that in the second half and kept the Tigers' back-line busy all afternoon. It would have been nice for the ball to have dropped to him in the area.

Scottish Premiership

Liam Scales (Aberdeen) 7

Was the busier of the Dons defenders, oozes class at times and looked comfortable at playing the ball out from the back. More signs why Goodwin would love to secure the on-loan Celtic defender permanently.

18/10/22

Premier League

Nathan Collins (Wolves) 6

Collins’ return to the XI didn’t go as planned. He sprayed some lovely passes around in the first half, but Wolves left their composure in the dressing room at half-time. Collins was partly to blame for Zaha’s winner.

Joe Hodge (Wolves) 6

Hodge had half a chance at the end after a ball ricocheted into his path inside the box, but he couldn’t get it out of his feet quickly enough and Palace’s defenders smothered him.

Championship

Greg Cunningham (Preston) 8

Surprised to see him play in the middle of PNE's back three but he got through the first half unscathed, though the Irishman did play rather deep. Headed home the opener five minutes after the restart - the Irishman attacking the ball well at the back post and steering his effort into the bottom corner.

Robbie Brady (Preston) 6

Off the bench and slotted in pretty straightforwardly for the remaining 20 minutes. Picked his passes and his experience was valuable at that stage of the game.

Sean Maguire (Preston) 6

Came on in injury time, looked after the ball in the corner at the end and retained possession.

Michael Obafemi (Swansea) 7

Drew a fine save from Joe Lumley early on and played a key role in Swansea's press. Some decent flashes but couldn't get that crucial end product, despite some promising moments.

Armstrong Oko-Flex (Swansea) 7

Gave Swansea a much-needed threat out wide, with his pace causing the Reading defence problems.

Jeff Hendrick (Reading) 5.5

Tended to be a passenger in the midfield, getting overrun at times and wasteful with the ball.

Sam Szmodics (Blackburn) 7

Looks far more at home in an advanced number eight role than stuck playing as a flase nine. Showed good energy in the centre of midfield and never shirks the defensive side of the game.

Dara O'Shea (West Brom) 4

Nervy moment when he took a gamble with a back pass that initially left goalkeeper Palmer concerned. His passing was off it all night and he was booked for good measure at the end. His ugly slice over the bar from a short corner routine summed up Albion's night.

Max O’Leary (Bristol City) 7

Little to do in the way of saves but showed good distribution. Clean sheet.

Mark Sykes (Bristol City) 7

Got about defensive work well and was full of running.

19/10/22

Premier League

Gavin Bazunu (Southampton) 7

Expertly denied Dominic Solanke from close range before the No. 9 was called offside. Made some good stops thereafter and commanded his box well from set-pieces and corners.

Seamus Coleman (Everton) 7

Other than a solitary misjudgement over a bounce in the area early in the second half that resulted in Almiron being played into space again, he was strong and assured and kept out a goalscoring chance with an acrobatic clearance.

Matt Doherty (Tottenham) 5

Curled a left-footed shot past the far post after a wonderful ball from Kane into his path. Struggled to make the same impact as his past two starts.

Championship

Scott Hogan (Birmingham) 7.5

Ran his heart out again but virtually nothing dropped for him in the box. It was yet another selfless performance. But when he had to be clincal - he was.

Josh Cullen (Burnley) 7

Probably the pick of the midfield in the first 45 and retained the ball well all night.

CJ Hamilton (Blackpool) 6

Forced to finish the game at left-back, which sums up Blackpool’s position at this moment in time.

Cyrus Christie (Hull) 8

Was good going forward in the first half putting in a couple of fine crosses that had no takers. Solid all night, showed his experience when needed.

John Egan (Sheffield United) 6

Solid and unlucky with a header in the second half that brought a save from Wilson.

Sinclair Armstrong (QPR) 8

An excellent first senior start for the teenager. Cardiff struggled to deal with his pace and power in the first half and he won the penalty after being caught in the box by Jack Simpson. Tired in the second half and deserved his standing ovation from the crowd as he left the field.

Callum O'Dowda (Cardiff) 6

Saw very little of him, but when we did he was typically tidy enough. Doesn't let you down on the ball.

Callum Robinson (Cardiff) 5

Given the nature of the game, he was incredibly quiet. Hardly his fault. Feeding off scraps all night. Off after an hour, saved for Sunday's game no doubt.

Darragh Lenihan (Middlesbrough) 8

Excellent at the back with one superb block in the second half just after Boro's second. Long ball over the top created that goal too.

Scottish League Cup

Liam Scales (Aberdeen) 7

Strolled through the game. Comfortable with the ball at his feet so suits the way his manager wants the team to play.

21/10/22

League 1

Marcus Harness (Ipswich) 6

The former Portsmouth man started as the central No.10 and had some good moments when he got on the ball and managed to turn Derby defenders, but often lacked the final ball as he looked to push Ipswich forward. Had a shot blocked by Eiran Cashin at the start of the second period.

Eiran Cashin (Derby) 8

Caught the eye in the first half with one incredible crossfield pass and defensively he was solid too. Produced plenty of blocks and was comfortable in possession.

David McGoldrick (Derby) 5

Conceded a penalty and had a shot tipped around the post in the second half.

Conor Hourihane (Derby) 5

Didn't impact the game as much as he would have liked.

22/10/22

Premier League

Seamus Coleman (Everton) 9

The 34-year-old Everton captain showed no signs of slowing down in his third game of the week as he rolled back the years to keep Wilfried Zaha tucked in his back pocket, including making a timely last-ditch tackle to deny the Eagles’ danger man.

Championship

CJ Hamilton (Blackpool) 9

Wasn't 100% on his selection but he caused problems throughout and offered up an outball under spells of pressure, unreal late strike.

Greg Cunningham (Preston) 6

Steady enough hour back there before being taken off due to a knock. Used the ball well and made the right decisions. Looked comfortable in his defending.

Sean Maguire (Preston) 5

Saw some of the ball in the final third and showed some nice touches but didn't cause Blackpool any huge problems. One slick move with Alan Browne.

Robbie Brady (Preston) 5

Came on with 15 to go but PNE went further behind five minutes later. Played centrally but could only send a few crosses in and pass sideways.

Alan Browne (Preston) 5

Brought on at 3-1 with ten minutes to go. Had one positive run at the defence but couldn't finish the move off with Maguire.

Scott Hogan (Birmingham) 6.5

Ran really hard throughout, setting up Chong to strike the woodwork and swapping passes with Hall only to shoot straight at Kaminski. Another good run saw Bacuna put him away early in the second period - but once again he shot at the goalkeeper. His late strike will have been little consolation.

Darragh Lenihan (Middlesbrough) 6

Solid defensively but sloppy at times playing the ball out from the back thus impacting momentum.

Dara O'Shea (West Brom) 6

O'Shea was committed in his defensive duties against his opponents, who proved to be a handful on a number of occasions. Not much he could do after his side were reduced to ten men.

Jason Molumby (West Brom) 5

Replaced Gardner-Hickman with less than 20 minutes to go. Struggled to make any real impact.

Jeff Hendrick (Reading) 7.5

Had a shot in the first half with the outside of his right foot but it was easily saved by O'Leary. Worked hard in the middle of the pitch and create some half chances in the second half.

Shane Long (Reading) 8

Given the final 25 minutes in Joao's place. Great to see him back and gave the fans a lift. Brought energy to the play and set up Carroll's goal.

Max O'Leary (Bristol City) 6

Only had one shot on target to deal with in the first half which was easily dealt with. Had no chance with either goals. A couple of nervy moments outside of his area including scuffing a clearance.

Mark Sykes (Bristol City) 6

Didn't get forward as much as we're used to seeing but won his fair share of headers at the near post. Pushed higher up the field after Reading opened the scoring and sliced a decent opportunity wide. A lot more effective in the final 30 minutes.

Georgie Kelly (Rotherham) 6

Got himself another goal.

Cyrus Christie (Hull) 8

Up and down in the first half, very solid with and without the ball. Second half was more of the same and a terrific finish put City 2-1 in front.

John Egan (Sheffield United) 5

Will have had his heart in his mouth when sub Kasey Palmer went down under his challenge in the box but ref Keith Stroud waved play on - which, in real time, looked a fortunate one for the Blades. Rose highest to make good contact with a second-half header but it went straight at Wilson in the home goal.

Will Smallbone (Stoke) 5

Straight back in after missing mid-week with a knock. Couple of neat touches but not as big a threat as needed.

Josh Cullen (Burnley) 7

Fills spaces and is very clever out of possession.

League 1

Paudie O’Connor (Lincoln) 7

Solid at the back and made a crucial clearance at 1-1 to deny Bannan from having a tap-in.

Sean Roughan (Lincoln) 6

Found it tough to get into the game going forward but was defensively sound and worked hard.

Danny Mandroiu (Lincoln) 7

Appeared frustrated in the first half but bounced back incredibly well to start the second half and produced a great finish.

Mark McGuinness (Sheffield Weds) 8 - Star Man

Strong and commanding performance at the back. Dealt with most of what Lincoln's attackers threw at him. Barely put a foot wrong.

Mipo Odubeko (Port Vale) 7.5 - Star Man

Given his chance in the absence of James Wilson and Ellis Harrison – and certainly took it. Set up Massey early on and then went close with a long-range strike against the post. Work rate typified by tracking back well into his own half to stop a counter attack.

Sean Raggett (Portsmouth) 8

The goal capped another rugged and no-nonsense display in which he didn’t give Rovers strikers a sniff at goal.

Ronan Curtis (Portsmouth) 5

Not his day. Exposed defensively when tracking back and didn’t use the ball well in attacking situations.

Jack Taylor (Peterborough) 6.5

A dominant first-half display capped by a well-taken goal, celebrated in the manner of someone soon to become a father. Tired second-half and almost gave an equaliser away with a terrible pass before he was substituted.

Scottish Premiership

Liam Scales (Aberdeen) 7

Was unlucky with a run forward shortly before half time. Seems comfortable playing in the left of a back three. Solid from the on-loan Celtic defender.

Thanks YTM.
Seems Brady might not have the creativity to play centrally for us, or maybe had an off day.
Molumby also playing poorly, and Knight I believe is injured.

22/10/22

Championship

Sinclair Armstrong (QPR) 7

Very raw – prone to giving the ball away and lacking composure in front of goal. Is also, at this stage of his career, prone to quickly running out of steam. And yet he is still a major problem for opposing defences and is so exciting to watch. His pace and, at times, his hold-up play, worried Wigan.

League 1

Finn Azaz (Plymouth) 7

His 14th minute strike was a real goal-of-the-season contender. After a slight recent dip in form, Azaz has definitely rediscovered his attacking sparkle in recent matches.

Warren O'Hora (MK Dons) 6.5

Solid performance, didn't make mistakes and did the simple things right.

23/10/22

Premier League

Gavin Bazunu (Southampton) 7

Kept his first clean sheet as Southampton keeper on Wednesday night but could have done very little to stop Granit Xhaka from finding the net. DId excellently to deny Gabriel Jesus just before half-time, parrying the ball out of danger from close range after the Brazilian's half-volley.

Nathan Collins (Wolves) 3

Collins was marginally better than Kilman and Jonny in a thoroughly miserable outing. He joined Wolves to chase European football, but he is staring at another relegation from the Premier League at this rate.

Championship

Michael Obafemi (Swansea) 8

Spurned a great chance midway through the first-half but worked tirelessly from the front. Stung the palms of Ryan Allsop in the second-half but needlessly booked too. Got the goal his efforts warranted to make it 2-0, to his credit.

Callum O'Dowda (Cardiff) 8 - Star Man

Was Cardiff's out ball at the start of the match and looked to be getting the better of Joel Latibeaudiere. Was Cardiff's most likely attacking outlet, even when they went down to 10. One who can hold his head high after that performance.

Callum Robinson (Cardiff) 1

Sent off in the seventh minute in a derby for throwing a ball at an opposition player. Unacceptable, idiotic and petulant. Should have known better, being such an experienced player. Ruined the match after Cardiff had started so well. No excuse.

Scathing on Collins, and I wouldn't disagree.
Nice to read that about Azaz, Obafemi and O'Dowda.

The report was probably written for the local newspaper by a younger reporter who is more than likely a fan as well, I'd say.

I mean, the commentators said pretty much the same thing, and they're not Cardiff fans. It was pretty brainless stuff in fairness.

Indeed - the comments under the sky clip on twitter probably give a better insight into how the incident was viewed by most fans, mostly incredulity as to the state of the game that something so harmless is now deemed worthy of a sending off.

Yeah. Random headbangers on Twitter know more than commentators, journalists and ex pros who played the game or get paid to write about it.

His own manager acknowledged it was a red card offense and had "no complaints" about it.

24/10/22

Premier League

Mark Travers (Bournemouth) 6

Didn't put a foot wrong during the second half, and even denied Declan Rice's vicious half-volley with a strong palm. Unfortunate to concede the last-gasp penalty.

25/10/22

League 1

Paudie O'Connor (Lincoln) 9 - Star Man

Was a man mountain the entire game. Headed every ball away, blocked every shot and didn’t put a foot wrong.

Sean Roughan (Lincoln) 6

Solid at the back, but wasn’t able to get forward on many occasions.

Daniel Mandroiu (Lincoln) 7

Mandroiu cannot stop scoring, and the Irishman is proving to be a clinical finisher. Took his goal fantastically but was rash in possession a few times in the second half.

Kieran Sadlier (Bolton) 6

Looked to be positive on the ball.

Warren O'Hora (MK Dons) 7.5

Offered nothing to the Charlton front line. Solid and strong on the ball.

Dawson Devoy (MK Dons) 6.5

A good return after suspension. Won the free kick which Johnson netted.

Eiran Cashin (Derby) 7

Cruised through this game without too much of a problem as Exeter found it hard to break Derby down as a result of their defensive solidity. It was the other end where there were problems.

Conor Hourihane (Derby) 5

Showed intent with some forward runs early on but it was a bit frenetic in midfield which does not suit a player of his quality. Came very close to a winner with a stunning free-kick.

David McGoldrick (Derby) 6

The striker had one or two moments of quality and put himself about.

Jack Taylor (Peterborough) 7

He was far from foot perfect, but he played a big part in the first two Posh goals with driving runs from midfield.

Finn Azaz (Plymouth) 6

Had to be substituted in first half stoppage time after he was hurt following a tackle on him. Slowly limped off the pitch and then to the home dressing room. Argyle will be hoping his injury is not serious.

Mipo Odubeko (Port Vale) 6

Offered a few bursts of pace.

Marcus Harness (Ipswich) 6

Had a little more physicality to the Ipswich side after coming into the game and made some good defensive interventions to help clear danger.

Richard Keogh (Ipswich) 7

On to help the defensive effort in the closing stages and made some vital headed clearances.

26/10/22

Champions League

Matt Doherty (Tottenham) 5

Got the nod at right wing-back in place of Emerson Royal but did very little of note in his time on the pitch. Went close with a low effort seconds before he made way.

League 1

Mark McGuinness (Sheffield Wed) 7

Seamlessly moved to the right of the back three. Strong and committed with his defensive duties as Rovers got little joy down his flank. Was assured when the Owls switched to a four-man defence.

27/10/22

Europa Conference League

Conor Coventry (West Ham) 7

There was a second start of the season in midfield for Conor Coventry in all competitions, with the midfielder's last appearance coming in this competition against the same opponents in Denmark last month. Looked really good in the centre of the park and formed a good partnership with Lanzini. Won tackles, showed a good range of passing and even came close to a first goal for Hammers, steering wide from the edge of the penalty area. Continued to do well as the game went on, and although he is quite far down the pecking order, Moyes can be pleased with his performance.

28/10/22

Championship

Scott Hogan (Birmingham) 7

Once again ran himself into the ground on another day when things didn't drop for him in the box - one Longelo cross was just behind him just before the hour. Deserved his ovation as he was subbed.

Sinclair Armstrong (QPR) 7

A positive for Rangers. Came on for Roberts and maintained his energy levels for the whole of his time on the pitch, worrying Birmingham with his pace and power as well as some decent link-up play.

Premier League

Mark Travers (Bournemouth) 5

Likely to remain between the sticks until the World Cup break after Neto's injury, but the Cherries No 1 visibly struggled to fill the void. He may have palmed Oliver Skipper's effort around the post from a tight angle in the first half, but his display did not exert the confidence needed. He was caught in no man's land for Spurs' equaliser, and failed to ease the pressure from deliveries.

Nathan Collins (Wolves) 7

Composed in central defence and rarely troubled.

Gavin Bazunu (Southampton) 6

Made some important saves to deny Eberechi Eze twice in the first half and switched up his distribution in an attempt to get Saints out from some intense home pressure. Did well again in the second period to keep the score at 1-0, getting down low to deny Jordan Ayew.

Seamus Coleman (Everton) 6

A tough evening for the full-back. Gave the ball away on a couple of occasions and struggled at times up against Willian. Replaced just after the hour.

Championship

Max O'Leary (Bristol City) 7

Was superb at commanding his area from crosses and was applauded by Pearson when coming to catch a deep cross. Had little to do in regards to shot-stopping but had little chance with a well-hit equaliser.

Mark Sykes (Bristol City) 7

A lot more positive in his attacking approach than he has shown in the last couple of weeks. Drove forward on countless occasions and his deliveries were also effective. Defensively sound alongside Tanner, the duo in constant communication.

Dara O'Shea (West Brom) 3

Gave McBurnie far too much time to get the ball from out of his feet and pick his spot. A good finish certainly, but O'Shea stood off the striker and allowed him to. Passing at the back was generally okay, though he hung TGH out to dry with one sloppy ball out.

Jayson Molumby (West Brom) 5

Tried his luck a couple of times from range - one whistled past the post, the other beaten away by the keeper.

John Egan (Sheffield United) 8

Set the tone early on with a series of early headers from long throw-ins. These long throws caused United all kinds of problems last season but not the case this time round. Won everything that came his way and was solid in the tackle. One of his best performances of the season.

Jeff Hendrick (Reading) 5

Didn't make any impact at either ends of the pitch and rarely touched the ball.

Callum O'Dowda (Cardiff) 7

Was involved in almost every one of Cardiff's positive moments in the first half. Keeps hold of the ball so well. Switched to wing-back after the break and did equally well.

CJ Hamilton (Blackpool) 8

Had the odd run on his marker and had a great defensive engine when required, kept persisting and put in a fine delivery to the back post which Yates nodded home.

Cyrus Christie (Hull) 6

Not as solid as we'd seen in the two previous games alongside Figueiredo, did make a goal-saving tackle on the hour to stop Rovers from getting a second.

Sam Szmodics (Blackburn) 7

Opened the scoring with a good finish from a tight angle for his third of the season. Looks far more comfortable as a number 10 or an advanced eight where he has players running ahead of him.

Will Smallbone (Stoke) 4

Effective turns on the ball but still looking for killer pass or finish. Not strong enough at times.

Alan Browne (Preston) 7

Back in the midfield and justified his selection with a battling display. Helped out at both ends of the pitch and had a goal ruled out in the second half.

Robbie Brady (Preston) 5

Deployed on the wing and helped out Fernandez defensively on occasions, as well as Potts. Had to clear the ball at the front post for Boro's goal though and his passing was hit and miss. A couple of dangerous crosses sent in but blew hot and cold. despite his graft.

Darragh Lenihan (Middlesbrough) 7

Solid throughout as he ushered Boro's back four, with little he could do to stop either goal.

League 1

Kieran Sadlier (Bolton) 6.5

Added some speed to Bolton's play after coming off the bench.

Eoghan O’Connell (Charlton) 7

Booked for a sloppy challenge on Kayden Jackson after 16 minutes. Got back to deny Tyreece John-Jules as he broke through on goal late in the first half but injured himself in the process and was stretchered off just before the break.

Marcus Harness (Ipswich) 5

One of three players introduced for the final 20 minutes, with the attacker working in tight areas on the edge of the box, influencing the game well at times but losing the ball on others.

Eiran Cashin (Derby) 7

Had a decent game in the heart of the defence. Produced one excellent challenge in the first half which summed him up his mentality. Brave as they come.

Conor Hourihane (Derby) 7

Picked up his fifth yellow card of the season which means he will be suspended which is a blow given he had a measured game here. Had a hand in two goals.

David McGoldrick (Derby) 9 - Star Man

What can you say? One of the finest hat-tricks you will see. Has been dubbed a cheat code when he is on this form. A ridiculous display of lethal finishing.

James Collins (Derby) 8

Showed his value to Derby with a brilliant centre-forward's performance. Aggressive, intense and scored on his return from suspension. Makes such a difference to the forward line in terms of his know-how.

Trevor Clarke (Bristol Rovers) 6

Showed intent to beat defenders on the ball without success, but he cleared his lines relatively effectively. Had to go off with a knock late on and will hope for good news from the medical staff.

Jack Taylor (Peterborough) 7

He looks so classy when he's striding through midfield. Almost cost Posh the win though with a failed 'flop' which led to Cambridge's best chance of the match.

Paudie O’Connor (Lincoln) 7

Another solid performance from the centre-back.

Sean Roughan (Lincoln) 5

Was given a torrid time by Sammy Robinson when the winger came on and struggled to get to grips with him all game. Picked up a petulant booking.

Daniel Mandroiu (Lincoln) 5

Looked bright before being forced off with injury. Hopefully nothing too serious for the winger.

Sean Raggett (Portsmouth) 7

Pompey’s warrior declared himself fit and produced a typical powerful centre-half performance until back injury reared up once more.

Mark McGuinness (Sheffield Wed) 7

Strong in the tackle and in the air. Never seemed flustered. The Cardiff City loanee has proven a shrewd piece of business.

Scottish Premiership

Jamie McGrath (Dundee United) 7 - Star Man

McGrath impressed on another grim afternoon for United. He created three chances for the hosts – more than any other player on the pitch – and enjoyed an effective, combative partnership with Craig Sibbald in the heart of midfield.

The Ireland international was moved to a more advanced role following Watt’s red card and repeatedly attempted to bring the hosts to life with surging runs forward.

Liam Scales (Aberdeen) 5

On-loan Celtic player was member of a defence that was under the cosh for the most part. Stuck gamely to task.

Championship

Sam Szmodics (Blackburn) 5

Worked hard but gave the ball away when he tried to play forward. Another performance that lacked quality.

Cyrus Christie (Hull) 6

Not close enough to Akpom for the opener. Good ball in second half for Oscar to at least hit the target. Attacked well second half and scored a good goal.

Darragh Lenihan (Middlesbrough) 7

Some big blocks in the second half before Boro conceded from a shot cruelly deflected off him. Made up for it moments later with a big back post header that resulted in Boro's second.

Jeff Hendrick (Reading) 6

Kept things ticking over in the midfield, he showed his experience. Could have scored with a long-range strike in the second half.

Shane Long (Reading) 6

Did not play long, but could see what he brings. Held the ball well and stretched the defenders where possible.

Robbie Brady (Preston) 7

Solid display and his experience felt really valuable when Swansea got on top in the second half. Worked well off the ball and sent some teasing crosses into the Swansea box.

Alan Browne (Preston) 7

Used the ball well in the first half, making quick and incisive decisions. Had a couple of efforts in the first half - a volley at Benda and a header over the crossbar, just before the break. His cross led to the opening goal and the skipper ran the hard yards that were required in the second.

Sean Maguire (Preston) 6

Added some freshness at the top end of the pitch and looked after the ball responsibly a few times.

Ryan Manning (Swansea) 6

Bold enough to try and make things happen but didn't get much joy on the left wing in the first 45. Was everywhere in the second half and had a golden chance to nick a point at the death, only to be denied by Woodman.

Armstrong Oko-Flex (Swansea) 7

Gave the Swans the spark they needed in the final third and put Preston on the back foot. Really pushing for a starting place.

Michael Obafemi (Swansea) 6

Didn't get a sniff in terms of chances but played a part in keeping Swansea on the front foot.

Max O'Leary (Bristol City) 7

Very little to do in the first half with the visitors mustering just one tame effort on target. Not afraid to come out of his area to play from the back which led to one or two heart-in-mouth moments. Had little chance with the goal.

Mark Sykes (Bristol City) 6

Was rarely tested from a defensive perspective in the first half and a searching pass forward to find Weimann when his effort clipped the bar. Almost had a cross turned in by Wells after United's goal before coming off in place of Antoine Semenyo as Pearson looked for a different dimension in attack.

John Egan (Sheffield United) 7

Marshalled the defence well in the second half when United were under pressure and hanging on to a lead. Some crucial headers under pressure once again.

Enda Stevens (Sheffield United) 6

Came on for Fleck and looked solid down the left.

Dara O'Shea (West Brom) 6

Caught out and subsequently booked when fouling Hamilton on the run. Got Townsend out of bother against the same player when the winger looked to sneak in behind.

CJ Hamilton (Blackpool) 5

Ineffective on the whole in attacking positions, defensively worked hard.

League 1

Paudie O’Connor (Lincoln) 6

Solid at the back once again.

Eiran Cashin (Derby) 6

Morecambe's major threat either came from counter-attacks or long balls which he stood up well to where the latter was concerned. Took a booking for the team in the second half.

David McGoldrick (Derby) 6

Couple of nice touches in a game that was played at a frenetic tempo with Morecambe trying to shut down Derby at every opportunity. Had a penalty saved when you would have backed a player of his quality to score.

James Collins (Derby) 6

Would have put your house on him scoring from the spot, but unfortunately denied by a good save from Connor Ripley. Seemed to make it a one-man mission to get Derby back into the game at times as he volleyed over and won the second penalty.

2/11/22

Championship

Scott Hogan (Birmingham) 6

Another selfless effort and another match without much to go at in front of goal. Worked hard, his movement was good but no real opportunities to score.

Callum O'Dowda (Cardiff) 6

Didn't see as much of him as we have come to expect in recent months. Brought off as Mark Hudson tried to freshen things up.

3/11/22

Europa Conference League

Conor Coventry (West Ham) 6

A really good performance from Conor Coventry. Allowed the rest of midfield to attack as he held a nice base behind them. Did show off his range of passing at times and generally just really, really composed on the ball. Another pleasing display in this competition for him.

4/11/22

Championship

Jeff Hendrick (Reading) 4.5

Another game which seemed to pass the Irishman by. Had a couple of good moments but generally failed to step up and control the midfield.

Shane Long (Reading) 4

Pressed hard but couldn't make any real impact on the match.

Alan Browne (Preston) 7

Showed intent on and off the ball in the first half but North End weren't quite at the races as a team. Put himself about and was key in PNE starting the second half well.

Robbie Brady (Preston) 6

His crossing caused real problems for Reading, with a brilliant assist for Evans' opener. Saw a shot saved before half-time and looked dangerous when he pushed higher up. Took a booking in the first half and was penalised for the penalty, even though it looked soft.

Sean Maguire (Preston) 7

Held the ball up well and was clever in his centre-forward play - drawing fouls and retaining possession in the Reading half.

Premier League

Mark Travers (Bournemouth) 4

Sent the wrong way for Rodrigo's early penalty and failed to make a save of note. Ultimately, he was left to pick efforts from Sam Greenwood, Liam Cooper and Crysencio Summerville out from the back of his net after the interval. His record of simply conceding too many goals this season continues.

Nathan Collins (Wolves) 5

Collins was skinned by Mitoma in the build-up to Brighton’s winning goal, but the Irishman wasn’t the only one guilty of making a mistake in Wolves’ back-line. The impending arrival of Lopetegui will no doubt help the talented defender.

Seamus Coleman (Everton) 6

Up against it with Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall’s twinkling toes running at him, he rode the storm of a difficult start to put in a solid display before making way for the more youthful Patterson as Everton chased the game.

Championship

John Egan (Sheffield United) 7

Solid at the back and his header was turned home by Robinson. Another good display.

Enda Stevens (Sheffield United) 5

Struggled up against the pace and trickery of Benson. Left-footed winger playing on the right and allowed to cut in on to his left on far too many occasions. Booked midway through first half for deliberate foul, which summed up his troubles against him. Much better after the break.

Josh Cullen (Burnley) 4

Back in the side but couldn't provide the security the defence needed.

Sam Szmodics (Blackburn) 6

Worked relentlessly off the ball and had a goal disallowed for offside. Moved up front in a change of shape which didn't do him any real favours.

CJ Hamilton (Blackpool) 5

Quiet and limited quality when he got hold of the ball.

Darragh Lenihan (Middlesbrough) 7

Commanding at the back. Will be disappointed to lose Weimann with the opener but, overall, a decent game.

Max O'Leary (Bristol City) 8 - Star Man

Made a sensational double save moments before City went up the other end to score the opener. Bailed Vyner out to deny Forss in the first half. Kept City in it with a string of fine saves before finally being beaten.

Cyrus Christie (Hull) 8

Used his experience throughout, particularly in the second half with City needing to be resilient against numerous crosses.

Sean McLoughlin (Hull) 6

Did what he had to do when he came on in the closing stages, headed and kicked away.

Dara O'Shea (West Brom) 6

Caught napping as Dykes freed himself of O'Shea's attentions and made room to have a shot which Palmer saved. Brave in the aerial battle generally against the bulky QPR striker and had to be on his guard against the trickery of Chair and Willock.

Jayson Molumby (West Brom) 6

Created indirectly the first big chance, for Diangana, when he burst into the box with the ball and had a shot from a tight angle - it was a decent effort considering. Plays at full pelt and sometimes plays too quickly.

Will Smallbone (Stoke) 5

Straight back in after missing mid-week with a knock. Couple of neat touches but not as big a threat as needed.

Scott Hogan (Birmingham) 7

Rewarded for weeks of pressing energetically when he was on the spot to seize on Jagielka's error and unusually coolly slot past Joe Bursik. Never let his energy levels drop.

Callum O'Dowda (Cardiff) 7

Was a key component of Cardiff's excellent press from the front in the first hour. Was always an outlet for the defence and goalkeeper, too.

Armstrong Oko-flex (Swansea) 6

On his first start since joining on loan from West Ham, Oko-Flex caused plenty of problems with his pace and was his side's brightest spark in attack in the first half. Fired just wide early on but always had the visitors on the back foot. Withdrawn at half-time.

Ryan Manning (Swansea) 7

Always a willing runner on the left and took his goal brilliantly to get Swansea back into it. Made so many key defensive interventions to keep Swansea on the ball.

Michael Obafemi (Swansea) 5

Had nothing in front of goal in truth and was unable to influence proceedings from what was a rather lonely position.

6/11/22

Premier League

Gavin Bazunu (Southampton) 4

Called into action a few times during the first half and dealt with the shots he faced relatively well but let himself down with his distribution, which was chaotic at times. Beaten for all four goals by low finishes into the corner.

Matt Doherty (Tottenham) 7

Helped to make the goal with the pre-assist for Kulusevski, and added quality from the right in the final 25 minutes.

League Cup

Mark Travers (Bournemouth) 6

Handed another chance to build some confidence heading into the weekend and delivered. He tipped over a rasping drive from James Garner in the first half but was largely untested before the break. Demarai Gray's strike was too hot for him to handle, despite his acrobatic dive.

Mark Sykes (Bristol City) 5

Made a good run towards the back post where his header was saved by Rushworth. His crossing wasn't up to scratch and Lincoln were able to exploit the space behind him and put the pressure on Low. Came off at half-time with Weimann dropping to wing-back.

Paudie O’Connor (Lincoln) 9 - Star Man

Simple outstanding from Paudie. Not only did he get the all-important third, the Irishman also made a goal-saving block at 3-0 to deny Conway.

Sean Roughan (Lincoln) 7

Struggled more in the second half when Bristol seemed to double up on him. Had a good first half though and got to grips nearer the end.

Luke McNally (Burnley) 6

A threat from attacking set pieces but will be disappointed with Crawley opener.

Dara Costelloe (Burnley) 6

On the fringes of the game but kept at it before being replaced.

Warren O'Hora (MK Dons) 8 - Star Man

Scored a brilliant volley to give Dons the lead. Led the defence in fine fashion again en route to their fourth straight clean sheet.

Conor Grant (MK Dons) 7

Built on a solid performance off the bench on Saturday with a good effort on Tuesday. Set up Dennis to score, and looked a threat in parts.

Darragh Burns (MK Dons) 7

Had a lively opening half-hour, finding space and joy in between the lines before Morecambe switched system to smother his influence.

Dawson Devoy (MK Dons) 6.5

Went through the motions in the centre of the park, letting Dons cruise to victory.

Scottish Premiership

Liam Scales (Aberdeen) 6

Tough night for the Celtic loanee as the defence had a rough start to the game but eventually grew into the tie.

Championship

Scott Hogan (Birmingham) 7

Ghosted between the Swansea defenders for his ninth of the season. He pressed vigorously but when he did win the ball back he struggled to find the necessary quality on his pass.

Ryan Manning (Swansea) 7

After a slow start, the Irishman caused havoc on the left flank and played a key role in his side's first goal. Put in some really good deliveries and worked hard defensively too. Should have done better from the corner that led to Troy Deeney's goal though.

CJ Hamilton (Blackpool) 7

Limited impact in a game that had already passed Blackpool by.

Darragh Lenihan (Middlesbrough) 7

Might have scored from a glancing header. Untroubled at the other end of the pitch.

Callum O'Dowda (Cardiff) 5

Cut a frustrated figure at times owing to his lack of involvement. Found himself defending a lot early on.

Callum Robinson (Cardiff) 7 - Star Man

Hull did an excellent job at keeping him quiet early on. He tried to run in behind but struggled for quality service. But he needed just one chance to score after excellent play from Ralls and floated a fantastic ball into Whyte for his goal.

Jimmy Dunne (QPR) 6

Given Rangers’ defensive woes from set-pieces in recent weeks while he has been out injured maybe he should have started the game? Didn’t have much to attack as Huddersfield sat deep hanging on to their lead. Tried to be a nuisance in the box.

John Egan (Sheffield United) 5

Had United's best effort up to that point early in the second half when he allowed McAtee's good pass over the top to drop and then leathered a volley goalwards, but Johansson did well to tip it over.

Enda Stevens (Sheffield United) 5

Was perhaps fortunate not to concede a penalty late in the first half as he tangled with Wiles and the Millers skipper went down. On first glance it looked like a pen and replays didn't do much to challenge that view. Thought he had scored in the first half but he was flagged offside. Made way for Sharp.

Jack Bonham (Stoke) 6

Benefited from some shots coming into his lap, or credit to his positioning. Kicks often went straight to Luton keeper.

Will Smallbone (Stoke) 7

Largely operated in front of his own area but useful on the counter with some clever passes.

Jeff Hendrick (Reading) 4.5

Lacked any real impact on the game. Too often took the safe option which took the sting out of the side's attacking play.

9/11/22

League Cup

Matt Doherty (Tottenham) 4

Endured a wretched night with his error leading directly to Forest’s first goal.

Mark McGuinness (Sheffield Weds) 8

Dominant in the air and stuck to his task. Had his pocked pinched once by Walcott after Stockdale played him into trouble. Is so calm and composed under pressure.

Conor Coventry (West Ham) 5

Horrendous backpass put Markanday through on goal before being sacrificed for more attacking Benrahma.

Sam Szmodics (Blackburn) 6

The boyhood Hammers fan got the final 30 minutes after coming on for Dack.

Nathan Collins (Wolves) 7

Collins has been heavily criticised for his defensive work recently, but the 21-year-old had some good moments in this game after a shaky start. He won lots of headers, distributed the ball well and held the Wolves defence together alongside Kilman. Collins played his part in the goal by winning the ball back and setting Podence away down the right.

Joe Hodge (Wolves) 6.5

Hodge slotted in alongside Neves in Wolves’ 4-2-3-1 shape and plugged away in midfield. The Irishman did well on his full debut.

Connor Ronan (Wolves) 6.5

Ronan tried to bring some invention to Wolves’ attack in an attacking midfield role and came closest to a goal while he was on the field. Ronan saw his flick saved by Robles after breaking free of his marker inside Leeds’ penalty area.

Caoimhin Kelleher (Liverpool) 9 - Star Man

Some nice goal kicks first half. Forced into routine saves from Dobbin and McGoldrick in last 10 minutes, and three excellent stops in the shoot-out.

Eiran Cashin (Derby) 8

Got away with a poor touch that led to a Liverpool chance in the first half but that mistake aside, he had a fine game in the heart of the Derby defence.

Conor Hourihane (Derby) 7

Pace of the game suited him and he picked out a terrific pass that found Louie Sibley in the first half which the midfielder should have done better with. Experience told on many occasions.

James Collins (Derby) 7

In a game like this, you always knew he would be a peripheral figure in which it was all about his work off the ball. He kept plugging away.

David McGoldrick (Derby) 6

Produced a peach of a pass for Dobbin late on as Derby nearly pinched a goal on the counter.

11/11/22

Scott Hogan (Birmingham) 6.5

He was lively, running off the shoulder and finding space in behind, however I don't think anyone expected him to score when he went clean through just before half time. Kept going to the very last.

12/11/22

Premier League

Mark Travers (Bournemouth) 7

Largely untested in the first half, with his defence dealing well with direct crosses into the penalty area. He denied substitute Tom Cannon's header late in the game, and dealt well with deliveries into the box.

Seamus Coleman (Everton) 6

Came off the bench to play out of position at left-back with his side already 2-0 down, the veteran captain led by example but others were unable to follow.

Tom Cannon (Everton) 7 - Star Man

Premier League debut came hot on the heels of his senior bow here on Tuesday – with a brace against Paris Saint-Germain for the Under-21s in between – and he went close with a header from a Gordon cross soon after going on, providing Everton’s otherwise toothless attack with a different dimension.

Gavin Bazunu (Southampton) 5

Wasn't positioned well for Firmino's opener but made an excellent, close-range save to deny Mohamed Salah shortly after. Came out and claimed several balls into his box but was also beaten inside the six-yard box but Darwin Nunez twice.

Matt Doherty (Tottenham) 6

Put in the dangerous cross that led to Spurs' third goal for Bentancur and gave Leeds something else to worry about down the right.

Nathan Collins (Wolves) 6

Collins’ last two appearances represent an improvement on his Brighton showing. He looked comfortable on the right of Wolves’ back three and his distribution was good.

Championship

Max O'Leary (Bristol City) 7

Was a spectator for the majority of the first half. The trend continued into the second half with Watford failing to register a shot on target.

Callum O'Dowda (Cardiff) 6

Was involved in most of the positive things that happened going forward and struck up a fantastic partnership with Robinson. Hit a number of dangerous crosses and passes into the box. Faded a little when moved to left-back.

Callum Robinson (Cardiff) 6

A little bit of a frustrating one, because 90% of the things he did were brilliant, but that final 10% was missing. Had a number of efforts on goal but couldn't find the back of the net.

John Egan (Sheffield United) 7

Won a lot of headers as Cardiff targeted the wide areas to get crosses in, particularly through O'Dowda but Egan was equal to those. Former Blade Callum Robinson was lively though and one moment in the first half he left him trailing and got in behind. Strong performance after the break as he led the defence with United looking to hold on to their 1-0 lead.

Enda Stevens (Sheffield United) 6

Much improved performance from the Republic of Ireland defender. A moment of concern early on when he gave the ball away and put his side in danger but defended well on the whole.

Jimmy Dunne (QPR) 6

Did well on his return to the starting line-up but ultimately it was in vain as Gyokeres scored twice.

Ryan Manning (Swansea) 7

Some good deliveries from set-pieces and was always an outlet on the left flank. Tested Nicholls with a shot from wide in an encouraging performance.

Michael Obafemi (Swansea) 7

The forward made some brilliant runs up the pitch and had Huddersfield's defence on edge with his pace. Struck the post with a fine effort.

Armstrong Oko-Flex (Swansea) 6

Was very direct but couldn't have the all-important impact in dangerous areas.

Jeff Hendrick (Reading) 6

Escaped with just a yellow card at the end of the first half when he went in late on Woods despite loud cries for a red. Had a rather up and down performance overall, with some defensive lapses but he did keep things ticking over reliably in the middle.

Shane Long (Reading) 6

Back in the side and handed his first start in over two months. Worked incredibly hard as ever, running the channels and forcing Hull's defenders into quick decisions. Held the ball up well but needed more support from his teammates.

Darragh Lenihan (Middlesbrough) 7

Looked uncomfortable for half an hour with Norwich's attack, but his leadership and composure helped Boro settle and get to grips.

Robbie Brady (Preston) 7

Allowed the cross to come in for Millwall's opener a tad easily, but got to grips with the game after that and caused problems with his crossing. Used the ball pretty well and put in a shift, before being taken off after Millwall's third - the cross for Flemming having come down that side again.

Alan Browne (Preston) 6

Attacked the ball well for the first PNE goal and carried the ball forward with energy at times. Was competing well but lost a key 50-50 in the middle of the park, Millwall scored a few seconds later and he then made way. Performance went downhill after his and Brady's withdrawal.

Sean Maguire (Preston) 5

Pretty isolated up there with Riis. Played the final 10 minutes or so.

Dara O'Shea (West Brom) 8

A superb, selfless display. Body on the line throughout. Did the simple things really well. Playing with dedication from O'Shea isn't anything new to him, but he just has that added intensity to his game at the minute.

Jayson Molumby (West Brom) 8

It might be a footballing cliché, but he really did cover every blade of grass. Molumby is more than just a runner, though. There were times when he displayed good ability in possession, not least of all his sharp turn to get Thompson booked.

Jack Bonham (Stoke) 5

Beaten by Swift, Harry Clarke and Bartley in first half, with a couple then stopped on line, then Thomas-Asante in second.

Will Smallbone (Stoke) 4

Too weak in the tackle too often. Should have cut out pass in build-up to opener. Some neat passes but too inconsistent.

League 1

Mark McGuinness (Sheffield Weds) 7

Another impressive showing from the Cardiff City loanee. Was strong in the air and maintained his concentration levels throughout. Looked a cut above most of the players on the pitch.

Jack Taylor (Peterborough) 6

His shooting and attacking play looked improved in this one and he was tidy on the ball but Tim Dieng was his man at the first goal and he just stood there and allowed him to glance the ball home.

Marcus Harness (Ipswich) 6

The attacker kept the ball better than he has done in recent weeks and helped his team, while also having chances which would have won the game had he been able to take them. Thundered off the underside of the bar in the first-half and then, after the break, headed wide when presented with a good cross from Chaplin. He should have scored that one. Could perhaps have done more to get back into the picture and try to prevent the visitors’ leveller.

Paudie O’Connor (Lincoln) 6

Another good performance from the Irishman in defence.

Warren O'Hora (MK Dons) 5.5

Part of that back line which never dealt with Derby's aerial threat.

Conor Hourihane (Derby) 7

Delivered the corner from which Roberts scored and it was from another of his set-pieces that led to Collins grabbing a second for the Rams. Has had a tough week through illness but showed quality.

James Collins (Derby) 7

Played up front on his own and was a peripheral figure in the first half, but he came alive after the break and took his goal with real aplomb.

David McGoldrick (Derby) 6

Came on to help press MK Dons when in possession.

Sean Raggett (Portsmouth) 6

Plenty more culpable than the defender who stood firm while others wilted.

Mipo Odubeko (Port Vale) 5

Hard to come on and influence a game that was heading against the Vale.

Scottish Premiership

Liam Scales (Aberdeen) 7

Performed excellently in defence, and had an added spark going forward as he looked to support the attack in creating opportunities.

13/11/22

Championship

Josh Cullen (Burnley) 8

Recovered possession countless times and produced a really strong performance.

Must say I’m missing these…Can only imagine how much work was involved though!

Had meant to restart them after the World Cup from the Stephen's Day games when the Premier League came back, but was just too busy over the Christmas to do them. Anyway, things have quietened down again now so I'm going to start them back up, starting with the last week of games.

30/12/22

Championship

Sean McLoughlin (Hull) 8

Came close to scoring with a well-worked corner routine. Shanked one late on over his bar for a proper heart-in-mouth moment.

Cyrus Christie (Hull) 8

Steady enough early on, saw more going forward second and having created plenty, his cross finally got turned in by Oscar.

Adam Idah (Norwich) 8

Epitomised his talent in one dynamic and dangerous performance. His left-wing role allowed him to drive at defenders while also providing the running in-behind that Russell was looking for, and on the ball his quality was evident, most of all when he drove home the opener to give Norwich the lead.

Lovely flick through to Pukki, who should have done better, in the 17th minute. After consistent struggles with injury have frustrated his first few years as a senior player, there's no better time to find form than when a new head coach is set to arrive.

Jeff Hendrick (Reading) 5

Helped Reading to look reasonably effective today when on the ball, which isn’t something you can always say. Did well to direct the ball around Reading’s side to retain possession, but still looks limited when it comes to breaking the lines. Hendrick’s real problem though is that he still looks like an absolute saloon door off the ball. At many times he may as well not be there. Hendrick won not a single tackle or duel at all tonight and was dispossessed three times. He needs to find some key role in the side in 2023, or there’ll be no repeat loan in 2023/24.

Jack Bonham (Stoke) 5

Came to claim most things but will be disappointed not to do more to stop a slow motion Burnley opener and kicking sometimes wasted.

Will Smallbone (Stoke) 6

Useful pressing in first half and some decent link up play without being able to really crank it up a gear and be dangerous in the opposition half.

Josh Cullen (Burnley) 7

Prodded in his first Clarets goal to settle contest and was combative.

Ryan Manning (Stoke) 8

Deliveries from set-pieces were much improved, and the Irishman caused plenty of problems from the left wing. Did plenty of defensive work, making numerous tackles and interceptions in what was a fine display.

League 1

Eiran Cashin (Derby) 9 - Star Man

Playing so well at this moment in time and this was another game when he won plenty of his duels and made a couple of excellent blocks. Close to a goal too and was outstanding from start to finish.

Conor Hourihane (Derby) 5

Produced a couple of decent deliveries and Derby should be making more of his set-pieces in truth. Would like to see him get further forward at times.

David McGoldrick (Derby) 6

Back in the side after illness and showed one or two mesmerising bits of quality that showed he is a class apart at this level. Had a shot blocked in the second half.

James Collins (Derby) 5

Tended to drift back towards his own goal. and his work-rate is invaluable. Can't fault his effort and is playing the hardest role in the team up front on his own.

Jason Knight (Derby) 6

Injected pace and drive into the heart of midfield.

Paudie O’Connor (Lincoln) 6

Defended well and helped his team hold onto a point with ten men.

Sean Roughan (Lincoln) 6

Did well against a bright youngster in Conor Bradley. Was solid for most of the game.

Daniel Mandroiu (Lincoln) 7

Was unfortunate to be replaced due to the red card but had looked back to his best. Really intelligent free-kick to supply House.

Kieran Sadlier (Bolton) 5.5

Big chance for him to show he is worth a regular start and though he linked up with Dempsey early on, Wanderers could not get him into the game enough in the second half.

31/12/22

Premier League

Nathan Collins (Wolves) 8

Lively start. Was given an early warning by referee Jones after a rather meaty challenge as he brought the ball out but overran it. Made a crucial challenge to deny Martial after Fernandes' through ball. Fantastic feet to drift through the United midfield before drawing a foul from Fred, but could have done more to prevent Rashford breaking through.

Mark Travers (Bournemouth) 5

Little he could have done for both goals, with the blame lying at the feet of those in front of him. His handling was otherwise unwavering, especially on a slick pitch, and the pressure was eased through a handful of punches and claims.

Gavin Bazunu (Southampton) 6

Made no attempts to hide that he was going long every chance he got to distribute. Was unlucky to concede as he did after Ward-Prowse's deflection. Didn't have too much to deal with in the second half but looked a little shaky when failing to catch a cross from Antonee Robinson that almost allowed Kenny Tete to score. Gave away a late penalty when trying to punch clear but denied Mitrovic from the spot.

Seamus Coleman (Everton) 7

Disciplined cameo as Everton stood firm and made a crucial last-gasp challenge on Phil Foden.

Evan Ferguson (Brighton) 8

Showed good energy and attacking intent when the 18-year-old entered the contest and then bagged his first Premier League goal by shrugging off William Saliba and neatly tucking the ball home. Was a good focal point up top.

1/1/23

Premier League

Matt Doherty (Tottenham) 6

Had a lovely link-up with Gil early in the first half before nutmegging Mings in the Villa box only for his shot to be deflected away from goal. Made a crucial sliding tackle to deny Watkins in the Spurs box after the hour mark.

Championship

Callum O'Dowda (Cardiff) 7 - Star Man

Just about the only player to show class and poise with the ball at his feet. Looked capable of unlocking the left-hand side for City and found space to cross and link-up time and time again.

Callum Robinson (Cardiff) 5

Had to scrap and scrape for every chance. Had one on a plate from Ralls, though, and his low shot was saved. Threw his toys out of the pram when he was subbed.

CJ Hamilton (Blackpool) 6.5

One of four changes made as winger handed start. Notched assist with pass through to Lavery to slot home. Showed good energy but lacked impact in second half and was taken off.

Max O'Leary (Bristol City) 7

Called into action early on by denying Martyn Waghorn with his legs. Unfortunate with the opener after initially making a brilliant save. Safe hands coming out for crosses. Rarely tested in the second half but did everything expected of him.

Louie Watson (Luton) 8

Excellent full league debut for the youngster who took to the holding midfield role like a duck to water. Always eager to show for the ball and receive it from his defenders, while used his body impressively to manoeuvre space away from his markers and get Town on the attack, as his passing was neat, tidy and usually spot on too. Off after just over an hour but it was an impressive one.

League 1

Glenn Whelan (Bristol Rovers) 6

Experience at the back is something the Gas have lacked this season, and Whelan provided that alongside a little game management to help his side over the line.

Ed McGinty (Oxford) 7.5

Not at fault for the Grecians goal after initially making a good save from Jay Stansfield. Made a super stop to deny Josh Key moments later to keep United in the game.

Jack Taylor (Peterborough) 6.5 - Star Man

Played with more energy and drive than most. Unlucky not to score late on when hitting the inside of a post.

Warren O'Hora (MK Dons) 5.5

The defence was slow to start the game, and got pulled apart at times by the Plymouth front line. Caught flat-footed for Plymouth's second.

Dawson Devoy (MK Dons) 6

Was Dons' best midfield outlet, and when they had a spell of pressure, was the key man. But he faded in the second-half.

Sean Raggett (Portsmouth) 5

Not a good day at the office having been at fault for both goals. First being put on the floor by Rak-Sakyi before giving away the ball in the build-up to the second.

Ronan Curtis (Portsmouth) 5

Gave his all like we all know he can but couldn’t get into any attacking areas.

2/1/23

Championship

Darragh Lenihan (Middlesbrough) 8

Brilliant at the back once again. Showed real leadership and played some wonderful balls out of defence, including one early in the second half that put Marcus Forss through on goal.

Ryan Manning (Swansea) 7 - Star Man

Always a threat on the left flank in the first half and defended well too. Indeed, he ended the match with eight tackles in a top defensive effort.

Josh Cullen (Burnley) 7

Burnley didn't control the contest but Cullen recovered possession and was a steady influence.

Dara O'Shea (West Brom) 8

Stood up admirably to the obvious challenge posed by Carroll, his old teammate who he'll have known only too well the qualities he possesses. Won plenty of headers on that front and completed some decent passes out from the back.

Jayson Molumby (West Brom) 9 - Star Man

Magnificent. As strong a hand as Lumley produced to deny him, he really should have put Albion in front when bursting into the box to meet Swift's lay-off. Outstanding battling qualities displayed to win the ball before he then fired in an excellent cross from the right for Dike's goal.

Jeff Hendrick (Reading) 4

The Irishman was bypassed far too often in the midfield as Reading struggled to get a foothold in the game early on. He did find himself in pockets of space on a couple of occasions, but didn't make the most of those moments.

Shane Long (Reading) 5

Brought on against one of his former clubs, he almost got an assist with his flick from an Ince corner, which Rahman headed over.

Sean McLoughlin (Hull) 7

On his 50th start for the Tigers, McLoughlin was involved in the opening goal, brilliant ball for Smith's first.

Cyrus Christie (Hull) 7

One run down the right early on was like prime Cafu. Another fine display, even if the second half was a little more conservative.

Jack Bonham (Stoke) 6

A very quiet afternoon until excellent save to deny Ben Woodburn late on – but then beaten by Evans’ header.

Will Smallbone (Stoke) 5

Did a lot of the prep work well to win the ball in opposition half in first half but needs to make better use of it. Quiet second half.

Alan Browne (Preston) 7

Grafted away at right wing-back and did a job for the team. Couldn't fault his application or endeavour. Sent in the corner which Evans headed home.

Jimmy Dunne (QPR) 7

The ideal game for Dunne, who was able to show his leadership and battling qualities.

John Egan (Sheffield United) 6

Horrendous error gifted the home side the opener when he tried to pass out from the back but played the ball straight to Chris Willock and then deflected the effort from Ilias Chair into his own net as he tried to block the shot. Then made amends right at the death with the equaliser to earn United a point.

Ciaran Clark (Sheffield United) 6

Used his experience well on a number of occasions to clear the danger. Picked up some good positions and read the play well but came off at half-time with what looked a hamstring injury after he stretched to clear the ball but then felt the back of his leg.

Enda Stevens (Sheffield United) 5

Came close to scoring in the first half when he lashed an effort just wide. Gave the ball away on a couple of occasions but played a key part in the equaliser by sending the ball into the area for Egan to pounce and that assist will have done his confidence the world of good.

Adam Idah (Norwich) 6

Andrew Omobamidele (Norwich) 5

League 1

Eiran Cashin (Derby) 8

Another game, another clean sheet and the 21-year-old is playing so well at the moment. Good in possession too and was a class act once again.

Conor Hourihane (Derby) 8

A tactical tweak to a 4-3-3 allowed him to get forward more and it proved a shrewd one by Warne as the midfielder grabbed his first goal under the head coach.

Jason Knight (Derby) 9 - Star Man

Was relentless in the press and won plenty of encouragement from Warne on the sidelines. Powered through midfield and added plenty of zip to the attack from the centre of the pitch.

David McGoldrick (Derby) 8.5

What's there to say that hasn't already about this maestro? Pulled the strings like a professional puppet master. A brilliant performance capped off with a goal.

Paudie O’Connor (Lincoln) 7

Helped City get an unlikely point with a solid defensive display.

Sean Roughan (Lincoln) 4

Struggled on the left of defence, particularly against Wes Burns.

Daniel Mandroiu (Lincoln) 5

Struggled to impact the game in forward areas before being replaced at half-time.

Marcus Harness (Ipswich) 5

Starting again for the second time in just a few days, the attacker was direct in his approach, having a shot blocked and also having the ball in the net, only to see his effort ruled out after Burns was flagged offside. Replaced in the second half.

Mark McGuinness (Sheffield Weds) 8

We may as well copy and paste this section for McGuinness every game. A rock again.

3/1/23

Premier League

Seamus Coleman (Everton) 6

Provided some experience as Everton tried to hold back the tide.

Evan Ferguson (Brighton) 9

Looked a real threat going forward as his instinctive, first-time hit crashed off the post and he was inches away with a 25-yard piledriver, too. Was in the right place at the right time to fire home for his second goal in two games. The 18-year-old is making it look easy.

Andrew Moran (Brighton) 7

Made his Premier League debut and seemed to love every minute of his cameo.

Mark Travers (Bournemouth) 5

Will be disappointed to have conceded from yet another set-piece, especially one for which he was not at fault. Similarly beaten by Luke Shaw, who profited from a failure to mark him and then haul him down in midfield. United were just too smart for their third goal, which Marcus Rashford tapped home with ease after lapse defending.

4/1/23

Premier League

Gavin Bazunu (Southampton) 6

Didn't have too much to do in the first half and couldn't do much about the Nottingham Forest goal. Had some nervous moments in the second half but was - again - not tested too much.

Nathan Collins (Wolves) 8

Collins was imperious for most of the match at Villa Park, rebuffing Villa attacks with ease. He has improved greatly under Lopetegui and looks like the player who impressed in the early weeks of the season again.

Joe Hodge (Wolves) 6

Added some fresh legs in midfield and used the ball well alongside Neves and Matheus.

Matt Doherty (Tottenham) 8

Worked hard down the right and got his reward as he stroked home a left-footed shot for Tottenham's third goal.

6/1/23

FA Cup

Seamus Coleman (Everton) 7

United’s first goal came down his flank as Ben Godfrey was left to deal with Rashford but the returning captain epitomised his side’s fighting spirit and despite his advancing years, was full of running.

7/1/23

FA Cup

Gavin Bazunu (Southampton) 7

Kept his place in the team with Willy Caballero on the bench and Alex McCarthy out with injury. Could have done better with the opener, with Odsonne Edouard tucking the ball between his legs and into the goal. Improved afterwards and did well to claim several crosses into his box.

Alan Browne (Preston) 7

Solid enough shift at right wing-back again. Went close with a shot from the edge of the box, but got his reward late on in the second half when he timed his run well to slot home.

Robbie Brady (Preston) 6

Introduced late on. Good to have him back on the pitch.

Shane Long (Reading) 7

Given a rare start. Suffered an injury midway through the first half which saw his left arm bandaged up. Harried and pressed the Watford defence well, though, and kept up his superb record of scoring in the FA Cup for Reading with a precise finish to cap off proceedings.

Sean Raggett (Portsmouth) 7

Handled Harry Kane & Co superbly, fighting for everything and again reminding us defending is his strength. Never gave an inch.

Andy Lyons (Blackpool) 7.5

Made Blackpool debut at right-back after move from Shamrock Rovers. Looking promising going forwards and won free kicks for his side.

CJ Hamilton (Blackpool) 7

Bursts of pace caused isses for the visitors on the left flank. Good game going forward and added Blackpool's third goal with clinical finish.

Mark Travers (Bournemouth) 5

There was little he could do to stop the opening goal. However, damningly, there were three shots on target in the first half, with all three finding the back of the net. Made a crucial save to deny Anass Zaroury shortly after Bournemouth's second goal, but was beaten by yet another flashing drive from Manuel Benson.

Josh Cullen (Burnley) 6

Awful pass to gift Bournemouth leveller but didn't let it affect him and stuck to his task.

Luke McNally (Burnley) 7

Introduced early and did well albeit his poor pass contributed to Bournemouth second.

Jayson Molumby (West Brom) 5

Brought a little more bite into the midfield but Molumby - who enjoyed a wonderful Christmas period - encountered a determined and battling bunch.

Dara O'Shea (West Brom) 5

Brought about a little more authority at the back for Albion and made one or two crunching challenges on fearless Chesterfield players who continued to come on strong even in the later stages. Summed up Albion's day when passing straight out of play at the end.

Sean McLoughlin (Hull) 7

Decent performance from the Irishman again in the black and amber. Looks so assured in the majority of what he does.

Aaron Connolly (Hull) 5

Looked very rusty with a couple of heavy touches which is to be expected having only had a couple of training sessions.

Richard Keogh (Ipswich) 7

Started the game confidently, striding forward and getting his side moving into midfield while looking after things at the back. The penalty he conceded was rash as he stretched to deny Washington, who had beaten him into the box, but he recovered from it well enough.

Marcus Harness (Ipswich) 7

The first man off the bench, the attacker had some good creative moments and helped move Ipswich around the pitch.

Evan Ferguson (Brighton) 6

No goal for Ferguson this time out but led the line well and provided a focal for the Brighton attack. In contention to face Liverpool.

John Egan (Sheffield United) 7

Really commanding performance from the Republic of Ireland international. Dealt with everything that came his way but his reading of the game was impressive.

Enda Stevens (Sheffield United) 6

Did little wrong down the left. Offered an outlet going forward on the overlap, which gave Danny McNamara plenty to think about. Used his experience well to keep him under wraps for much of the match.

Jimmy Dunne (QPR) 5

A forgettable return to the club he spent time on loan with early in his career. Like Dickie was left marking thin air for Fleetwood’s first goal and like the rest of the defence has to share some blame for their second as a mis-hit corner was allowed to drift across the box.

Mark McGuinness (Sheffield Weds) 9

If this was, as is expected, to be his last hurrah then he posted a typically stoic defensive performance. If he can perform like this against Premier League opposition then it won't be long before he is playing there on a regular basis.

Nathan Collins (Wolves) 8

Collins was very solid right up until the moment where he misplaced the pass which led to Liverpool’s equaliser. He was pretty good after it too. The Irishman is improving under Lopetegui.

Joe Hodge (Wolves) 7.5

There is so much to like about the diminutive midfielder. He hassles and harries opposing players with an infectious enthusiasm that has endeared him to supporters. Hodge deserves to be called a first team player.

League 1

Paudie O’Connor (Lincoln) 6

Decent at the back, and headed a few balls away, could potentially have got across quicker to block Blackett-Taylor’s shot.

Danny Mandroiu (Lincoln) 7 - Star Man

Lincoln’s brightest spark throughout. Had a few opportunities in the first half that he struck well and got Lincoln back into the game with his goal.

Scottish Premiership

Liam Scales (Aberdeen) 6

Not a standout performance from the Celtic loanee, but he went quietly about his business to help Aberdeen secure a morale boosting victory.

Jonny Hayes (Aberdeen) 7

The experienced Irishman has proved to be a useful assest off the bench in the last two games, and was full of running and energy. Got the assist for Duk's second goal with a nicely weighted corner.

These ratings are helpful too in that they provide a little more context than the posts highlighting errors. Bazunu, McNally and Collins getting 7 or above when their threads have posters piling into dissect goal concessions they are involved in is interesting.

7/1/23

FA Cup

Jordan Shipley (Shrewsbury) 6

It was always going to be hard for Shipley up against Amad and Patrick Roberts, but he did OK. Roberts did get the better of him on one occasion but Marosi saved well.

Killian Phillips (Shrewsbury) 7

Tested the Sunderland keeper from range with a powerful effort and he got around the pitch really well on his debut. Will hope to build from this. Impressive.

Aiden O’Brien (Shrewsbury) 7

The striker showed some really nice touches in the opening 20 minutes, and if Salop can get him fit and keep him fit, he could be valuable.

Louie Watson (Luton) 8.5 - Star Man

Second start in succession for the youngster and continued his excellent form from New Year's Day with a starring role as the deep-lying midfielder. Always eager to get the ball from his defenders, he was able to turn away from trouble, get his head up and play forwards to find a team-mate or switch the direction of Luton's attack. Forced off by cramp but the home fans liked what they saw. Looks a real find.

8/1/23

FA Cup

Max O'Leary (Bristol City) 6

Question marks about why he put Atkinson under pressure for the opener when he played it to his feet on the edge of the area. Got a few crucial touches to dangerous crosses from wide positions. Did everything expected of him.

Mark Sykes (Bristol City) 7

Tried to get forward at every opportunity and was full of energy and pace down the right side. Eager to take his chance to earn a start in the league.

Ryan Manning (Swansea) 6

Happy to keep hold of the ball to draw others in and got forward well. Defended typically well at left-back. Tougher second half as he tired and the hosts went direct.

Eiran Cashin (Derby) 8

There were some glorious crossfield passes and in terms of his defending he was reliable and formidable as ever and his partnership with Forsyth is superb.

Conor Hourihane (Derby) 7

Didn't get forward as much as he did against Accrington, but he kept the ball ticking over. His role here was more of a facilitator than a lock picker. Assured.

Jason Knight (Derby) 8

Never stopped harrying Barnsley which would have delighted Warne who wants a side that is hungry in the press. Popped up here, there and everywhere and was rewarded with a goal.

James Collins (Derby) 7

Worked incredibly hard along the front and does the unselfish work so well. Contributed to defending set-pieces too. Rattled home the penalty just before half-time.

Joel Bagan (Cardiff) 7

Started shakily but very much grew into it. Linked up nicely with Philogene and Ojo at times. Some signs of encouragement for him. Sent off for a red card on the line, but had to take one for the team.

Jack Bonham (Stoke) 6

Had to deal with some heavy handling in a crowded box when defending set pieces, being sent to the deck once.

Andrew Omobamidele (Norwich) 7

Adam Idah (Norwich) 5

Scottish Premiership

Aiden McGeady (Hibs) 8

First league start of the season and showed how big a miss he has been during his absence. Set up the first goal, and his pace caused Paul McGinn problems all game. Still has that burst of pace, tracks back well to support his full-back and if he can stay fit, will make a huge difference to this Hibs team.

9/1/23

FA Cup

Ed McGinty (Oxford) 6

Unfortunate to be beaten three times by a ruthless Arsenal and could do little about Mohamed Elneny’s header. He possibly went to ground too early for Eddie Nketiah’s first goal and could’ve made himself bigger for the striker’s second.

11/1/23

EFL Cup

Gavin Bazunu (Southampton) 7

Claimed some early crosses well which will have given him plenty of confidence against his former side. Made himself big when Julian Alvarez raced through at the start of the second half and fired wide. Stayed brave and calm as City's pressure increased, making several key claims and saves.

(Joe Hodge wasn't given a rating as he only came on in the 80th minute)

They didn't have a shot on target, so this one is interesting.

14/1/23

Premier League

Evan Ferguson (Brighton) 8

Had a good battle with centre-back Ibrahima Konate and while he lost some battles, and had some victories too, he kept plugging away and got an assist for March's second goal. There's so much to like about his all-round attributes, especially for an 18-year-old.

Seamus Coleman (Everton) 7

Everton’s captain rolled back the years in the first half with an energetic attack-minded display and although he was pinned back more after the break, he continued to lead by example before making way for Gordon.

Gavin Bazunu (Southampton) 7

Held onto the early sighters put towards him by Everton and was let down by his teammates for the opener as they allowed Onana to get a free header on the ball. Stayed composed throughout and claimed several crosses that could easily have troubled him earlier in the season.

Nathan Collins (Wolves) 7

Collins was a tad lax in possession on a few occasions and needed to be bailed out by Kilman after being done by Antonio early in the second half. But the Irishman was generally quite solid at the back and dominated Wolves’ penalty area.

Championship

Max O'Leary (Bristol City) 6

Tipped a decent effort by Jordan Graham past the post early on. Had little chance with Deeney's penalty and likewise with Khadra's goal. Made a good save against the latter when he made a risky decision to come so far off his line.

Mark Sykes (Bristol City) 8

Keen to show what he can do in his favoured position on the right of the attack. Started the game really brightly with darting runs forward and grabbed his first goal in City colours with a tap in following Pring's work in the area. Added his second with a similar goal after Semenyo's excellent run. Dispossessed too easily for Birmingham's second.

Kevin Long (Birmingham City) 4

Not the start he wanted. Booked for an early body check then caught, arguably fouled, by Wells for the second goal. Overall though he looked like a 32-year-old who hadn't played for eight months, especially when one-on-one with Semenyo.

Scott Hogan (Birmingham City) 5

One good piece of hold-up play, which sent Bacuna down the right, was the highlight of an otherwise quiet first 45. As the game opened up in the second half he made a couple of good runs but it was almost as if Blues have forgotten how to harness his movement.

Josh Cullen (Burnley) 6

Burnley were overpowered in the middle in the first half Cullen grew into the game in second period.

Callum O'Dowda (Cardiff) 6 - Star Man

Tried his utmost to get forward from left back but struggled to really penetrate that left-hand side. Much better after the break and tried to take things by the scruff of the neck. He was on hand to smash home late on and it was a well-taken goal.

Callum Robinson (Cardiff) 6

Played two really incisive passes in behind the defence. Needs to start next time out.

Sean McLoughlin (Hull) 5

A couple of nice pings across the park early on, sacrificed just before the hour as Rosenior looked to go more front-foot.

Cyrus Christie (Hull) 5

Like the rest, non-existent in the first period. Was able to impact more in the second half going forward, but still not as effective as we've seen.

Aaron Connolly (Hull) 5

Not sure he touched the ball in the first 10 minutes on the field.

Dara O'Shea (West Brom) 8

Excellent, defence splitting pass for Dike who duly did the rest to get Albion back in the game. O'Shea was generally very good here, making some crucial interceptions, especially towards the end when Albion came under pressure. Captain's knock.

Jayson Molumby (West Brom) 8

He can either stand out and be among Albion's key men (see the entire festive period) or you can sometimes forget he is on the pitch (see Sunderland) but whatever his level of performance, Molumby's attitude is never in question. Brilliant energy and a fine time to slam home his first goal of the season.

Alan Browne (Preston) 4

His role on the day was confusing and the captain couldn't get North End going.

Tom Cannon (Preston) 5

A tough result to take on debut. Settled into the game after 10 minutes and had a couple of chances over the piece. Kept working away, but to little avail. Unlucky with his chance that hit the crossbar. Should get better with more minutes.

Troy Parrott (Preston) 5

A boost to have him back available. Game was gone by the time he entered the pitch though.

Robbie Brady (Preston) 5

Another good player to have back. More minutes off the bench but at a dreadful stage of the game.

Jeff Hendrick (Reading) 8

Tripled his tally for the season with two strikes in the first half. Took his first goal superbly, drilling the ball home low from 25 yards while he showed great awareness for the second to tap in from close range. Capped an impressive-all round performance full of tenacity and energy.

Shane Long (Reading) 7

Made an early entry into the game, replacing Hutchinson after just 14 minutes. Ran his socks off as ever and almost scored with a toe poke in the first half. Had a decent penalty shout early in the second half before being replaced by Joao.

Jimmy Dunne (QPR) 6

Had a real tussle with Andy Carroll and relished the physical battle with the former England striker. Made a couple of important headed clearances from two late Reading corners.

John Egan (Sheffield United) 6

Positioning was good and came to United's rescue on a couple of occasions by being in the right place at the right time to clear the danger.

Jack Bonham (Stoke) 4

Will think he could have done better with first goal and will have nightmares about the second.

Ryan Manning (Swansea) 8

The Irishman was a tackling machine and put in so many dangerous crosses from the left flank. Did so well to stretch and claim an assist for Joel Piroe and then put in a brilliant cross for Liam Cullen's fortunate goal. Top shift once again.

CJ Hamilton (Blackpool) 7

Dropped back well to help out Husband on left flank when Blackpool defended. As decent an attacking contribution as any Blackpool player out there at Vicarage Road.

Andy Lyons (Blackpool) 5

Replaced Connolly in the closing stages.

League 1

Sean Raggett (Portsmouth) 4

Nowhere near last season’s form and played Charles onside for Bolton’s opener. How Blues desperately need him back to his best to turn this around.

Ronan Curtis (Portsmouth) 5

Disappointingly made very little impact but he was in familiar company in awful team display.

Eiran Cashin (Derby) 7

Played an integral role in the first goal as a glorious crossfield pass picked out Nathaniel Mendez-Laing which was a tactic Derby used a lot in the first half. Defended well too but had to come off.

Conor Hourihane (Derby) 7

The 4-3-3 formation has allowed the Irishman to get into the box more and here he conjured up a header to get Derby back on level terms.

Jason Knight (Derby) 8

Was like a ferret in a Yorkshireman's trousers. Biting, nipping and full of running and you'd love to see his stats from a game in which he just never stopped. He epitomised a high-octane Derby performance.

James Collins (Derby) 6.5

Had a shot from distance which cleared the upright, but brings so much to the team in terms of his work ethic. Contributed at the back too and that often gets forgotten.

David McGoldrick (Derby) 5.5

Should have scored after Cheltenham scored their second.

Marcus Harness (Ipswich) 7

The attacker’s most memorable moment from this game saw him hit the bar after being found in space by an excellent Davis cross. Harness had some good moments in this game and some not so good ones, but was a threat as he looked to turn his man and connected with team-mates well.

Paudie O’Connor (Lincoln) 7

A brick wall at the back, a defensively sound performance from O’Connor.

Danny Mandroiu (Lincoln) 5

Made a couple of poor decisions and struggled to make his mark on the contest.

Olamide Shodipo (Lincoln) 5

Had a couple of good touches on debut.

Feels like deja vu reading the snippet about Connolly's performance.

Think Christie and McLoughlins 5 ratings and summary is far more reflective of their team performance as a whole today, like what can a striker do to effect a game where neither he or his team have the ball?

14/1/23

Championship

Andrew Omobamidele (Norwich) 6

Back where it all started after his emergency debut in the club’s second Championship title winning campaign under Daniel Farke. Snapped into an early challenge on Ben Woodburn.

Good positioning at his near post to deal with an inswinging corner. Let Delap escape a minute after the interval but Krul came to the rescue.

Louie Watson (Luton) 6.5

Given the final 10 minutes as boss Edwards made a late change and looked to get on the ball as much as possible, always finding a team-mate with his passing, but Town couldn't create a clear-cut opportunity.

James McClean (Wigan) 6

Another tireless display working overtime up and down the left.

Will Keane (Wigan) 7

Had a couple near misses before popping up with his customary goal.

League 1

Tyreik Wright (Plymouth) 6

Made his debut for Argyle as a 59th minute substitute for Danny Mayor but as the game really started to open up it was difficult for him to fully get up to the speed of it.

Warren O'Hora (MK Dons) 6

Looked solid as usual but suffered a first-half injury that forced him off.

Dawson Devoy (MK Dons) 6

Got into a couple of promising positions, but seemed shot-shy when the opportunity arose for him, looking for a pass rather than chancing his arm.

Jordan Shipley (Shrewsbury) 7

The pacey Bobby Kamwa got the better of him on a couple of occasions in the opening 45 minutes, but the wing-back coped better after the break.

Killian Phillips (Shrewsbury) 7

It was an energetic performance from the midfielder, he got on the end of a few crosses and looks a presence in the box.

Scottish Premiership

Aiden McGeady (Hibs) 5

Tried to make things happen but often put a little too much mustard on his final ball.

Jake Doyle-Hayes (Hibs) 7

Hibs improved in the middle after he came off the bench.

15/1/23

Premier League

Matt Doherty (Tottenham) 5

A quiet game going forward but he defended well enough at the other end.

Scottish League Cup

Liam Scales (Aberdeen) 7

Coped very well with Rangers attack and was doing his best to keep the Dons in the game when Rangers started their comeback.

Jonny Hayes (Aberdeen) 6

Had a curling effort saved by Alan McGregor as he tried to find a way to get Aberdeen level but drifted as the game fell away from Aberdeen.

16/1/23

League 1

Jack Taylor (Peterborough) 7.5

Played slightly deeper than expected but turned the ball over so many times for Posh. Also drove forward with the ball well and played some strong passes to get Posh going forward.

Re last entry, I only saw the first half of the Port Vale v Peterborough game on Sky last night but Jack Taylor was the best player during that time in what was a scrappy game on a very poor pitch. Mipo Odubeko played the full game for Port Vale, no rating here, he looked very frustrated in the first half, not getting any service up front and virtually no attempts to utilise his pace.

17/1/23

FA Cup

Kevin Long (Birmingham) 7

No-one played particularly well in the first half, Long didn't do too badly, certainly better than on Saturday. Defended reasonably well against League One opposition and was in the right spot to claim an unlikely goal.

Scott Hogan (Birmingham) 5.5

Another who just didn't seem that engaged. Totally peripheral in the opening 45. Had a chance at the start of the second and looked generally brighter after the reshuffle.

Ryan Manning (Swansea) 7

Put in some brilliant deliveries from the left and gave Swansea more of a threat.

Max O'Leary (Bristol City) 7

Called into action twice in the first half. The first to comfortably deny Ntcham before springing to his left to deny Vyner's sliced clearance. A smart save to stop Latibeaudiere from distance. Had no chance with the Swansea equaliser. Brilliant goalkeeping in the 120th minute to come out to claim a cross.

Mark Sykes (Bristol City) 7

Struggled to get forward in the first half with most of City's attacks coming down the left side. Made a couple of important tackles inside his own area. Grabbed his third in two games with a great run into the box before smartly finishing beyond Andy Fisher. Never stopped running throughout.

Louie Watson (Luton) 7.5

Big night for the youngster as he was given the responsibility of the holding role, always wanting the ball and happy to receive it in tight areas, more often than not spinning out of trouble to get Luton going with some neat passing. Got stuck in as well, as there were no cramp issues this time, only taken off when Luton had got their noses in front at the death.

James McClean (Wigan) 6

Produced a superb goalline clearance to keep the scores level shortly after coming on.

Will Keane (Wigan) 6

Had a couple of half-chances that were quickly snuffed out.

Nathan Collins (Wolves) 6

There were a few moments when Collins and his defensive colleagues were fortunate in the first half, but they improved after the break. Collins looked to get Wolves moving forward with quick distribution from the back.

Joe Hodge (Wolves) 5.5

Wolves lost the midfield battle in the first half and Hodge paid the price at half-time. The 20-year-old wasn’t able to disrupt Liverpool’s flow during a chastening 45 minutes.

Caoimhin Kelleher (Liverpool) 7

Rarely had a save to make but confident with the ball at his feet.

18/1/23

FA Cup

Joel Bagan (Cardiff) 2

Had a nightmare. Every pass he hit seemed to go awry, he slipped at crucial moments and attackers glided past him.

Scottish Premiership

Liam Scales (Aberdeen) 4

Not a good night for the Irish defender. Handled inside the area to allow Shankland to add a third from the penalty spot, and in general struggled to cope with crosses and balls into the area.

Jonny Hayes (Aberdeen) 5

Veteran Hayes has proved to be a useful player off the bench in recent matches, but failed to do anything meaningful in a rare start in what was a shocking night all round. Replaced by Besuijen less than 10 minutes into the second half.

20/1/23

Championship

John Egan (Sheffield United) 7

Up against one of the division's most prolific strikers in Oscar Estupinan, who already has 12 goals to his name - a third of Hull's tally so far, but Egan handled him well and the Hull forward got little change out of the Republic of Ireland international. A great interception 10 minutes from time kept the visitors at bay.

Sean McLoughlin (Hull) 5

Never looked comfortable with the pace and skill of Sheffield’s attacking line.

Cyrus Christie (Hull) 6

Steady away down the right. Moved deeper in the second half and looked slightly more comfortable.

Aaron Connolly (Hull) 7 - Star Man

Arguably City’s brightest at Bramall Lane. He looked bright on the ball and looked to make things happen.

Josh Cullen (Burnley) 7

West Brom caused issues in first quarter but the midfielder's calming influence helped Burnley gain control.

Dara O'Shea (West Brom) 7

There were some nervy moments for O'Shea, when attempted passes out from the back saw him run into trouble, but generally he and Pieters did their jobs as well as they could - for a large part of the second half Burnley resorted to long balls and that suited O'Shea down to the ground.

Jayson Molumby (West Brom) 7

His all-action persona and selfless hard work is much admired by supporters. Won crunching tackles, often starting Albion attacks. Won important headers in his own box, too, and might've scored Albion's second when forcing a low save out of Muric.

21/1/23

Premier League

Evan Ferguson (Brighton) 9 - Star Man

Tasked with getting Brighton back in the game... AND THAT HE DID. The lad is class. Estupinan floated an inviting ball into the box and Ferguson, the only Albion shirt in there up against five Leicester shirts, directed a pin point header past Ward, on to the far post and in. Proper striker!

Gavin Bazunu (Southampton) 5

Rushed out to meet Jacob Ramsey in the first five minutes and managed to clear both the ball and the player. Looked nervous with some of his actions and played some wayward passes that put Saints under unnecessary pressure on several occasions.

Seamus Coleman (Everton) 6

Much more withdrawn than the first half against Southampton, the captain was disciplined in keeping tabs on West Ham’s creative talents even if other team-mates weren’t but made way at half-time as the visitors chased a two-goal deficit.

Championship

Kevin Long (Birmingham) 5

Poor at Bristol City, picked up at Forest Green but once again struggled against Championship opposition. A weak header contributed to the Ledson goal, he looked slow on the turn and is still some way short of match sharpness. Subbed on 62 minutes.

Scott Hogan (Birmingham) 5.5

Had one half chance in the first 45 but got under Colin's cross and directed it over. Should have gone with a first time shot from Deeney's header down.

Alan Browne (Preston) 8

Started brightly and never really looked back. Was positive in his play and took his goal really well. Carried out his defensive duties all game - further evidence he is more than capable at right wing-back.

Robbie Brady (Preston) 8.5 - Star Man

Back in the starting lineup and justified his selection. His crosses led to both goals and he showed his experience throughout. Made the right decisions, worked his socks off and put in some crucial tackles at the back.

Tom Cannon (Preston) 7

Occupied centre-backs and was always on the move. Battles away up there and gives you everything he's got. His header back across goal led to the opener. Encouraging display.

Troy Parrott (Preston) 6

Put himself about, pressing defenders and making runs into the channels.

Max O'Leary (Bristol City) 6

Wasn't tested in the first half with Blackburn barely creating anything going forward. Had no chance with Dack's opener from close range. Safe hands from crosses but kicking wayward on occasions.

Mark Sykes (Bristol City) 5

Didn't have much of an impact in the first half and looked a little off-sync with George Tanner down the right. Looked leggy from Tuesday's FA Cup game and was taken off just after the hour mark.

Mark McGuinness (Cardiff) 7 - Star Man

A welcome return for the centre-back. Brought everything you'd want including aerial presence and a cool assuredness. Slid in to deny George Honeyman a certain goal, putting it over his own crossbar.

Callum O'Dowda (Cardiff) 6

Bombed up and down that left-hand side and really wanted to get forward. Put in a couple of decent crosses and never gave up.

Callum Robinson (Cardiff) 6

Always gets into good areas but made so many errors when in important positions. Better after the break, smashed one shot from 20 yards just wide of the post.

Jimmy Dunne (QPR) 7

Played well at the heart of defence, winning plenty of headers and used the ball efficiently. Made some important challenges as Swansea pressed for an unlikely winner late in the game.

Ryan Manning (Swansea) 7

Put in some good deliveries from corners and linked up well with Ollie Cooper on the left. Had a tough battle with former Swan Ethan Laird who was withdrawn due to injury, but, to his credit, the Irishman chipped in with a number of tackles and interceptions.

Jack Bonham (Stoke) 7

A welcome clean sheet for a pretty quiet afternoon’s work when he did the basics.

Will Smallbone (Stoke) 8

A much-needed finishing touch with well-taken goal. Had another shot deflected over and made a couple of useful passes.

Jeff Hendrick (Reading) 4

Kept things going in the midfield and did his best to affect things in the final third but got very little reward.

Shane Long (Reading) 4.5

Glanced a header narrowly wide after a free-kick in from the right.

League 1

Conor Hourihane (Derby) 8

The midfielder continues to reap the benefit of the tactical switch in midfield with a sublime finish on the half-volley. So deadly in those positions.

Jason Knight (Derby) 7.5

Was always on the move and set the tone for a high-octane performance. Whether it was tackling in midfield, or popping up with crosses from the wing, he was everywhere. Wears you out watching him.

David McGoldrick (Derby) 7

Was given the task of pressing Bolton's defence whenever they tried to play out from the back and certainly got some joy. Blessed with a wonderful touch.

Tony Springett (Derby) 6

Showed what we can expect as he chased Bolton down at every opportunity.

James Collins (Derby) 6

Came on to unsettle the Bolton backline.

Dawson Devoy (MK Dons) 6.5

Put himself about but on a difficult pitch, was hard for him to get much joy on the ball.

Conor Grant (MK Dons) 6

With Dons playing with their backs to the wall, did a decent job trying to clear the lines.

Marcus Harness (Ipswich) 5

Harness produced some good moments of quality during a first-half performance in which his team lacked their usual rhythm. Had a shot fly over and delivered the cross from which Davis was able to head home. Was replaced in the second half.

Tyreik Wright (Plymouth) 6

Will take him a little while to adjust to League One after playing for Bradford City in League Two for the first half of the season but he showed glimpses of considerable promise.

Finn Azaz (Plymouth) 7

Came up with two assists in just his second game, and first start, since late October after suffering a broken ankle in the home game against Shrewsbury Town. Will only get better the more he plays.

Sean Raggett (Portsmouth) 7

Given a new central-defensive partner and the pair looked solid. Did okay covering for Swanson on the right flank in first half but, whenever challenged centrally, was so comfortable.

Ronan Curtis (Portsmouth) 7

Very lively upon introduction and Joe Morrell should really have finished off his pass to score at one point. Would have impressed the new head coach.

Thanks again for this.

Ferguson is sure to start but Brady left wing back might ensure some nice deliveries into him so good to see Brady supplying for his club.

Midfield and Ferguson's partner are less clear at present. Obafemi and Parrott have time to play themselves into contention (assuming Obafemi gets a move). Cullen, Molumby, Knight are surely the midfield combo and Hodge and Hendrick are unlikely to shift one of the two former names. Knight hasn't got many goal involvements for Derby (1G and 2A in 20) which is disappointing at that level. What of a Finn Azaz Championship transfer in the next week and a few games there earning him a shout? Unlikely I suppose. I still feel for all his hustle and bustle and good play that Knight needs to be threatening more for goals, otherwise the pressure falls entirely on a front two.
