EPL looking as bare as I've ever seen it in terms of Irish players. Realistically looking at only a small number of Irish players making 25 man squads in the league this year - Doherty, Duffy, Coleman, Kelleher, Travers, possibly Ronan, maybe Randolph as a third choice keeper. Then Bazunu and Collins who are underage so don't need to be on the squad lists. Maybe Ferguson might get some minutes also but that seems to be about it.

Idah, Omobamidele, Springett, K Long, S Long, Smallbone, Hendrick, Clark and Connolly who all played at least some minutes in the Premier League last season have dropped out.

Probably our lowest number of players ever in the league this season.

Championship absolutely stacked. And plenty have moved up to League One from Championship. There has almost been a cycle of players this summer from LoI to League One. And from League 1 to Championship. With a little bit of patience, the Championship to Premiership evolution will catch on soon enough too.

The only players I can see getting any reasonable EPL time next season are -

Travers
Bazunu
Coleman
Doherty
Collins

So two keepers and three defenders, not great.

I can see Duffy being frozen out with Brighton and likely a loan move in January similar to the celtic move.

I've been thinking of a tutorial on how some of the stats I post are created for a little while, and made these two episodes over the last few weeks.

Episode 1 - Introduction to the data
How the player and game data is stored, and accessed

Episode 2 - Losses, Wins, and Substitutes
Explaining how three different stats were created using the data
  • That Stephen Kenny is the first Ireland manager to lose two games to teams ranked outside the top 90
  • That the winning margin against Scotland was the largest against a higher ranked side in a competitive game since rankings were introduced
  • That Alan Browne's goal against Belgium was the fastest by a substitute since James Collins V Serbia

They are both a little technical, so some knowledge of programming is assumed, but I'd hope they're both still relatively accessible.
Not sure how many more of these I'll work on, but I'm not going to go through three stats in a single episode again!

Really great project tetsujin1979, do you update the JSON files after each game yourself or is that automated?

I've a short program that gets the lineup, goals, etc, and then updates the JSON

In the new episode of the podcast, I'm joined again by Mark Kennedy of Hawkeye Sidekick and Philip Flanagan of The Bottomless Pit of Football to discuss the final two games of Republic of Ireland's 2022/23 UEFA Nations League campaign against Scotland and Armenia - is a good performance in a loss better than a bad performance in a win? Also, we look back at the U21's two legged play off against Israel for the 2023 UEFA U21 Championship, and the U19s topped their 2023 UEFA Under 19 Championship Qualifying Round group with a 100% record, without conceding

Tets - random stats question if you have a few minutes to check. How long is it since an Irish player scored in the Premier League and is this the longest time there has ever been without an Irish goalscorer?

Posted By: tetsujin1979
Date Posted: 11 Oct 2022 at 5:05pm
I had looked up something similar to that recently.
The last Irish goalscorer in the Premier League was Nathan Collins for Burnley against Southampton on the 21st April (1:46 below)
That's 173 days ago

The season started on Friday, 5th August, 67 days ago. and still no Irish goalscorer in the Premier League. Before this, the longest we had to wait for the first Irish goalscorer was the 2010/11 season, when Jon Walters scored for Stoke City against Blackburn on Saturday, 2nd October 2010, 49 days after the season kick off on Saturday, 14th August

That goal also ended the longest time between goals by Irish players, until now, the previous goal to Walters' was scored 146 days earlier, by Kevin Doyle on Sunday, 9th May 2010

Elon is driving twitter into the ground, I see a competitor coming along pretty soon.

Tricky one for you mate. Would you not just move everything to the website and build a slick new front end? Or not worth the time and effort?

I'm joined by Mark Kennedy of Hawkeye Sidekick and Philip Flanagan of The Bottomless Pit of Football to review the notable transfers and loans for Irish players in the January 2023 transfer window, following the group draw, we look ahead to the 2025 UEFA Under 21 Championship qualifying campaign, and after Vera Pauw names her first squad in the World Cup year, we wonder who, of the new call ups, is most likely to make the final squad in July?

In the third in the series of programming tutorials based on appearance data for Republic of Ireland players, I explain how to show that
1) The Ireland team against Scotland in September 2022 was the youngest to start a competitive game since a qualifier against Cyprus in November 1980
2) Stephen Kenny has given 15 players their debuts - the same number as Brian Kerr

Twitter are making massive changes to their API* this weekend, so how will it affect the live updates from the Irish Abroad twitter account and the live updates?

*API is an industry term that stands for Application Programming Interface, it's the methods made available by a company (Twitter, Google, Facebook, Amazon, etc) to use their services, e.g. to post an update, or image, or video, or read user information

Zero Irish players named the starting XI of Premier League clubs in this round of fixtures, for the first time ever in a complete round of fixtures, i.e. 10 or 11 fixtures, each club playing at least once

The changes didn't go through on Twitter last weekend, as had been announced by them, so as things stand everything is working as normal. No idea if/when the changes will happen now.

Just a slight difference, but I believe the total number of Irish goals scored by the 31 players was 114 (this seems to be backed up by the Transfermarkt data also):

12 Keane
10 Hogan
8 Cannon, Ogbene
5 Robinson, Obafemi, Manning, Szmodics, Sykes
4 Hendrick, Lyons, Molumby, Kelly
3 O'Dowda, Christie, McClean, Smallbone, Parrott
2 O'Shea, Dunne, Cunningham, Egan, Connolly, Clark, Idah
1 S. Long, Omobamidele, Hamilton, Cullen, Browne, K. Long

I'm joined by Mark Kennedy of Hawkeye Sidekick and Philip Flanagan of The Bottomless Pit of Football to discuss the highs and lows for Irish players during the 2022/23 season. In the past 12 months, we've seen record lows for players numbers in the Premier League, players emerged across European leagues, and one player was the highest highlight

Myself, Mark Kennedy of Hawkeye Sidekick, and Philip Flanagan of The Bottomless Pit of Football are joined by James Carew of pogmogoal to discuss the loss in Greece and victory against Gibraltar. After the discussion in our previous episode on what a draw would mean for our qualification hopes, not to mind Stephen Kenny's time in charge of the national side, what does the result in Athens mean for the manager, and did the response against Gibraltar change anything?

We discuss the final 23 players, as well as those who missed out, after Vera Pauw had to make the most difficult decisions of her career when selecting the squad for the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup - the countdown to Australia is almost complete!

And what statement is going to come back and haunt our guest??

Sorry to see it go. Between this service ending and the other well known site becoming more of a fanboy page for the manager than a tracker of Irish players of late it's going to be harder to follow Irish players overseas this coming season.

What a shame. Elon has killed all automated accounts worth following. At least we've got crypto scam bots instead now!

Thanks guys, really appreciate that.
The updates will continue as normal on other platforms, and I'll still post stats on Twitter, but everything else is done.
The site is overdue for an overhaul, and I'm hoping to have something ready to go for the new season in England

I'm joined again by Mark Kennedy of Hawkeye Sidekick to discuss Group B in the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup - what can Ireland expect in the three group games against co-hosts Australia, Olympic champions Canada, and African Cup of Nations semi finalists Nigeria? We make our predictions for each group, and how we expect the tournament to go.

(note this was recorded after the friendly against Colombia, but before the extent of Denise O'Sullivan's injury was known)
