High chance this match isn't played in Kiev

Looking at Ukraine's past fixtures, they play a lot of games outside of Kiev. Seems Kharkiv, Lviv, Odessa, Dnipro etc. are all options.

Will definitely be Kiev or West of it - they'll be avoiding East and South of the country if played in the Ukraine.

Took a punt and booked it Sunday to Wednesday. Nearly made the mistake of booking from Saturday and missing the Scotland game

Lviv would be a great shout, fans team have played tournaments here over the years and it's a fantastic city. Can fly direct from London or a hope across the border from Poland.

Not booking any flights till the venue is confirmed, after Aarhus. Unhappy

No harm booking hotels on free cancellation though.

In the first Nations League they played both home games outside Kiev (Lviv and Kharkiv). The two games with attendences in the most recent nations league were both in Kiev.

Looking back over Ukraine's last home fixtures for bar top seeds they've played majority outside of Kiev

for example for Euro 2020 qualifying
they only played Portugal in Kiev,
Serbia and Luxembourg were in Liev and Lithuania was played in Kharkiv

their final home game of the wc qualifiers in october was in lviv, obviously with fans in attendance. i wouldn't read much into whether fans were at the game or not. chances are it'll be kiev but i wouldn't put my house on it.

Good cheap high speed rail connections according to my Ukranian friend.  He has no idea where it will be played either.

I booked the direct Ryanair flights as well so lots of time to travel if needs be.  Of course if in Lviv better to go in via Poland or fly there.  For any of the other venues you are probably going via Kyiv anyway.

Not from Kiev to Lviv, quite the opposite to be honest

There is a train that is just over 5 hours, not too bad considering the distance. Sleeper train is another option.

Yes he reckons 5 hours to Lviv and 4.5 to Kharkiv.  Obviously there are much better routes if it does end up in Lviv.

That must be new as it was always an overnight train when we looked at it over the years going to eurofan.

I know.  I booked straight away but probably safer to wait now assuming prices have shot up.  If it is in Lviv I have booked to soon and there are clearly better ways to get there.  Pretty much anywhere else though and via Kyiv is the way to go.

The problem is we may not know the venue for a few months.  Of course the political situation is another concern.

Things escalated significantly yesterday...
US State Department placed Ukraine on LEVEL 4: DO NOT TRAVEL due to high risk of Russian military offensive.

Agreed - Armenia is tougher to get to but is bookable now so might lock that in.

I haven't specifically checked Kiev but the general rule is if a city is split into an old and new town, go for the old town. That's what I did anyway. As always it's a free cancellation booking so I can change it if need be.

I spent a day there on the way to Baku and the city centre itself is very walkable with distances not being to far apart. Anywhere in the centre from the Golden Gates to Poshtova ploshcha would be a good spot to look at. The stadium is a short walk away from here too.

are people booking flights at this point or just hotels? Considering the political landscape and the fact Kiev isn’t confirmed I’m just curious.

Im doubtful there will be any major upheaval that will need the match to be played at a neutral venue.
Booked the Ryanair flight from Kyiv to Dublin on the Thursday which gives me a day to travel if match is played elsewhere. Cost €37 so not much to lose and can be changed without penalty if need be. Will probably fly there direct from Yerevan so will book that at a later stage.

All booked up for Scotland away flights and accommodation.
Just accommodation booked for Yerevan but will look at booking flights in the next six weeks.
Ukraine. Nothing booked will book a hotel on free cancellation soon. Won't be booking flights until the political situation stabalise.

Will wait till venue confirmed before I look at this - definitely plan on going COVID/Russians permitting unless there is the requirement to test to get home which may put a spanner in the works (can’t afford to isolate abroad especially time  )

Have an inbound Scotland flight booked as much for convenience  as  anything else ( poor times into Belfast )

You can do a walk through antigen test at Londons airports for a few quid, a PCR is not required. the checks after that are minimal.

... and that's when flying to Ireland. Flying to UK now is no different to how it was pre-pandemic. No tests, locator forms etc. needed. I'm currently sitting in the departure lounge at Cork Airport at the moment. My biggest headache is trying to find somewhere selling coffee LOL

my point is the cost is not overly exorbitant. It takes no more than 5 mins to book and can be done a couple of hours before the flight. Hardly the greatest obstacle to overcome for the vast majority of passengers.

More like £40 quid CY2K, - i aint that bothered with the cost as work will be paying for it but its more the of having to arrange it though i only need it next week as reverting to Belfast after

my point is the cost is not overly exorbitant. It takes no more than 5 mins to book and can be done a couple of hours before the flight. Hardly the greatest obstacle to overcome for the vast majority of passengers.

2/3rds the price of a nice italian meal with drinks thrown in Wink

Lads need to be clever here. I wouldn't go booking any sort of flights to Ukraine, regardless of where it might be played there, or "its" not near the trouble. I was going to Georgia in 2008 when the game was switched to "Mainz" so all my flights to Georgia had to be cancelled due to an "ACT OF WAR", and I got FCK ALL money back on Angry- your travel insurance I'm positive won't cover you if the area is in a war state.. We were due to fly from Tbilisi to Hungary and then onto Montenegro, but they had to be cancelled too.

Ended up paying for an extra flight to Serbia from Frankfurt, train to Podgorica. Then paid for another  flight from there to Frankfurt Hahn with 10 hours on the floor, and lastly another Ryainair flight  home to Dublin which I paid for. Enough said !!! AngryAngryAngry

As tensions continue to escalate in Ukraine, some European airlines have begun to switch flight times to Kyiv to avoid aircraft parked overnight.

Very little chance of this going ahead in Ukraine. This is a lot more volatile than the Georgia conflict in 08 when match was switched to Mainz - the Georgian FA were raging if I recall and we even hosted them in a home friendly as ‘compensation’ for pushing for the neutral venue.

This is on a different scale. There’s no merit in booking even if it is free cancellation as flight times will change impacting stopovers and there won’t be any demand for flights any time soon so your cash is just tied up in flights you’re unlikely to use.

Yeah won't be booking anything for this.

How long before the game would such a change of venue have to be announced? I know that ordinarily it's 3 months but in emergency cases I assume it can be done in a much shorter period before the game.

If Putin gets his way a new regime will be in place well before June which would likely mean the game going ahead in Ukraine, probably Kiev.

Had a one stop flight with KLM, quick stopover, nice times, protected. Not as easy now. But at least there's options I guess.

Anyone had any experience of the border between Poland and Ukraine. We rented an Albanian car and drove to Skopje for the 2011 game so would hope this would be easier than the 2 hour experience of questioning and bribes we had then.

Seems OK, and also unlikely to be Russian forces on that border so should avoid any hand on hand combat

You never know, the game against Yugoslavia went ahead in Belgrade in the Euro 2000 qualifiers while they were being bombed out of it by Nato.

Then again the game against Georgia was moved to Mainz for less.

Why wouldn’t the game going ahead? Even if things escalated can’t see it not going ahead in a neutral venue

Because if theres a full blown countrywide conflict, then flying a load of lads out of Kiev to kick a ball around in another city somewhere may not be too advisable, not too high up the list of priorities for the Ukranians.

FAI person.

Like even if this game is played in the Ukraine, it will most likely be restricted. I see videos there yesterday of tanks being brought into the Ukraine to help defend the border. There's no hope of a warzone hosting a game with fans.

Poland you would think would be the most likely option. Stadium in Krakow isn't up to much and Poland play in Warsaw the night before so Wroclaw could be an option. I'd have no issue with that as it's a decent city.
