Made his first-team debut for Brighton last night, coming off the bench in the EFL match against Cardiff.

Still only 16, was playing senior football for Bohs at 14, including a memorable pre-season match against Chelsea.

Has got off to a good start in PL2/ the Brighton U23s, with two goals in two games.

The young striker seems to have a bright future ahead of him.  Here's hoping!

Nice piece on him here:    https://www.balls.ie/football/evan-ferguson-brighton-bohemians-481670 " rel="nofollow - https://www.balls.ie/football/evan-ferguson-brighton-bohemians-481670  ;

Great prospect, isn’t one of his parents English hence why he could move over at 16?

Should we be worried? LOL

Ahh really! 😂😂

I don't think we have to be regardless! He looks a prospect Kavanagh at Boro looks very promising too through sheer numbers hopefully we will have a few decent attackers/strikers established in the next 4/5 years. Plenty talent there anyways.

With a series of injuries to front-line players, Brighton manager Graham Potter has the young striker, Evan Ferguson, on stand-by to make his PL debut.

Seems only a matter of time before he gets more senior game-time, having made a solitary league cup appearance earlier on in the season.

Still only 17, people might remember Kevins' Boys product Ferguson for making his senior debut for Bohs at the record-breaking age of 14 (against Chelsea in a pre-season match).

He already has 5 under-21 caps for us (making his debut at the age of 16).

Brighton beat Liverpool to his signature last January.  His form this season has been good, with 7 goals from 7 starts (and 5 sub appearances) for Brighton's PL2 team.

Fingers crossed he's one with a good career up-front for Ireland over the next 15 or so years.

Brighton look a side that wouldn't score if they were there for a year. Surely he gets 10 minutes off the bench tonight with the state of this team trying to score.

Retains his place on the bench.

No Duffy.

Hard to know these days with Covid. Connolly's Instagram feed shows him working out in what looks like a home gym, so he might be a close contact to a positive case or something.

I understand that Duffy was available tonight tets. His suspension had already been served.

Not sure why he wasn't in the squad, covid maybe?

Potter said Covid related issues on sky before the game.

Scary potential. Only turned 17 and Potter is talking about him being ready for the next level. Wonder does he have to go out on loan? He's probably good enough for league 1 already

He's already handling U23s football in his own stride. As for as loaning him out he's not 18 until October. If he could get on the bench a bit for Brighton and get into matchday squads it would be magic sporadic appearances off it at such a level even better between now and the end of the year.

They clearly have a big opinion of him as you say. I do hope they ensure he continues to play for the 23s regularly too. No point sacrificing his gametime there too much.

Connolly, parrott, Idah, obafemi. All had cracking performances at youth level but fail to replicate that at senior level

And now Ferguson. Can we not just wait and see what happens. Talk about "fool me once...." Have we learned nothing?

Within 24 months we'll have a pretty decent idea whether we have something special on our hands or just another also-ran who might go on to have a half decent career.

I think at this stage all we would be all more than happy with a 10 goal in a season premier league attacker.

We have oceans of good defensive options.
Just need an attacking platform which means we can be more than draw specialist

Yeah, so we should all just shut up and never speak about the potential of a young player again....

Don't forget Odubeko, who some amadáns wanted parachuted into the first team about 5 minutes after they heard of him even though he doesn't want to play for us.

Yes. Unless he's rocking it at premier League/championship level.

What's potential when never really tested? Youth football and professional top level football is apples and oranges.

I'm not saying we shouldn't go "Ooh...XYZ seems interesting", but any serious evaluation is utterly futile until they play at senior level. e.g. insert every young teenage Irish forward who's been bigged up over the last 36 months.

Yeah theres no rush, he only just got promoted to the 21s. Better off playing with them or the 19s in March. Both have big qualifiers coming up.

Yes, best to leave him be for now. Obviously if he broke into the Brighton first team in the league and was playing regularly you'd reconsider, but for now he's fine where he is. Hopefully he might get more minutes in the next round.

He's in the under 21's at 17. Who cares what games underage teams have. If Kenny deems him worthy for call up whenever that maybe, let's assume it's a well thought out decision and not knee jerk.

..and thats fine if hes going to play him, otherwise its a waste of time when he could be playing competitive underage games that are good for his development and Kenny can keep a close eye on him instead of having him sit on the bench for senior friendlies. What good has it done for Parrott the last year?

Well thought out decision... I'm sure Kenny is aware of this. But if he called him up (regardless if he plays him or not) Kenny thinks that him being in the senior squad is a far better decision than keeping him in an under age.

Well, yeah, but it wouldn't mean it was right.

We have enough forwards in the squad who are unproven at club level already without calling in another. The lad has recently turned 17 and has played two senior games, give him time to develop.

Posted By: Lenny82
Date Posted: 08 Jan 2022 at 8:35pm
At least we know that Kenny will call him up if he feels he is ready, regardless of how old he is. He won't drag the arse out of it like managers in the past.

Could really do with this lad becoming top class, or at least being a good goal scorer for us.
We have some very promising keepers, defenders and midfielders emerging now in the 18-23 age bracket.
Really lacking in the striker department.

Posted By: kevin100
Date Posted: 10 Jan 2022 at 11:43am
He looks really promising. He was getting praise for an assist that was very much an accidental one however it was the other stuff in his little cameo disallowed goal positioning he has a real strikers instinct. Would have had another close range tap in if Maupay didn't play an atrocious ball across to him missing him completely.

That was all in 40 mins of football. He's a baby in football terms only turned 17 in October so it's important he's given time to develop play under 23 matches too if he isn't getting off the bench every week for Brighton.

Connolly Idah Parrott are still young the first two its an issue of not getting the appropriate gametime for their development. Connolly hopefully will get rolling now. Odubeko Okoflex Kenny Sinclair Armstrong we have plenty young strikers who have plenty potential. I'm confident one if not a few of them will develop into PL quality strikers in time.

England is a horrible environment for young attackers to learn their trade in general tends to take them a bit longer to come good so important to have Patience with these lads. Walters for example was playing League 2 football at 23. We may get a bolt from the blue too of this type.

I'd love to see one of them go to a mid rank Bundesliga or Ligue 1 team, just to see how it would go compared to the EPL. It might be a disaster, they might struggle with the culture etc. but the first team pathway seems a lot clearer in those leagues.

Sotona did this and vanished and has yet to re-surface.
But I agree that players looking further afield (out foriegn, as we like to say!) can only be a good thing.

As for Ferguson, hope BHA take it very slowly here.
I know we all want a superstar forward to emerge but that's so incredibly unlikely and heaping pressure on the lad can't be good.

I'd be happy if he had a decent U21 year for us - maybe get a goal or two and just settle in to that bracket.

Aaron Connolly was linked with Bundesliga clubs before making his breakthrough. Evidently the pubs in Baden-Württemberg weren't to his liking.

Even take Daragh Burns Emakhu vs Johnny Kenny now at Celtic. 3 most promising young strikers in the LOI last year The 2 lads look likely to stay on another year will likely play regularly while Kenny has made the move to Celtic. Where will the 3 of them be this time next year.

Gametime is paramount at that age.

Sotona went to Nice and that hasn't worked out so it ain't an exact science of course.

Yeah, probably too early. Especially with the way the Ireland fixtures fall, & Kenny aiming to win the NL group, Ferguson won't be getting much gametime for Brighton before that.

Brighton have Spurs in the next round of the Cup, so I wouldn't see him getting more than the usual 10mins there.
And in the PL he won't get much either, maybe 5-10minutes against a Burnley or a Norwich.

I could see the next year for him going something like:
Mostly playing U23s, but if Brighton get a decent draw in the EFL Cup next season, then Ferguson could get a couple of starts there in August/September/October, depending on the level of opposition. He'll be turning 18 at that point.
Interspersed with some PL minutes off the bench vs lesser teams.
Then maybe an FA Cup game next January before heading out on a half-season loan to a League 1 club (Portsmouth or MK Dons or something).

Perhaps if we have a couple of friendlies in November he could get capped then.

is it a case he'll be a bench player for the rest of the season now that Connolly is at Boro or is there a Brighton player out injured who'll dislodge him when they're back?

Not sure. They have another young forward, 19yo Sarmiento, who is injured at the moment (expected back in late February). He has 2 PL apps & 2 EFL Cup apps this season.

Aside from that, from looking at their squad list, all their other forwards were available tonight - Maupay, Trossard, Welbeck, & Ferguson.

Ferguson has played against Cardiff (ELF Cup, missed the Swansea game with a knock) & WBA (FA Cup), so I think there's clear intent they want to move him up a bit & it's looking good that he'll be on the bench a lot for the rest of the season.

Their next run of games:
Chelsea (PL)
Leicester (PL)
Spurs (FA Cup)
Watford (PL)
Burnley (PL)
Aston Villa (PL)

Might get another 10 minute run vs Spurs in the Cup.
If he's going to get his PL debut anytime soon then the Watford or Burnley games could be a good bet.

Interesting thought is that it's difficult to see how he's that far behind Idah, Connolly or Parrott at the moment in terms of his progress.

Idah only has the last few games of late and was subbed today, connolly only finding himself again at boro and parrott still making progress in league 1.

Ah those lads are miles ahead of Ferguson. Parrott is the youngest of those 4 (including Obafemi) and still about 2.5 years older than Ferguson

Or do you mean when they were his age?

Anyway, the fact Potter is comfortable throwing Ferguson on for 15mins vs Spurs bodes well for a Premier League debut in the near future.

As I said in a previous post though, hopefully he follows more the Parrott route (goes on loan once he's 18) rather than the Connolly/Idah/Obafemi route (staying at their parent club until 20/21 getting sporadic appearances).

Highly regarded at Brighton it would seem.

Graham Potter gave a late run-out to 17-year-old striker Evan Ferguson, who has impressed Veltman since coming into the first-team squad.

I was hoping he might score that tap-in when [Hugo] Lloris spilled the shot at the end but his goal will come,” said Veltman. “He is doing really well in training.”

Yes. Makes history as Brighton's youngest PL player.

Great stuff. Decent minutes for him as well, not just a few seconds at the end.

The youngest player to appear in the EPL this season (Kaide Gordon was younger when he appeared, but Ferguson is younger than Gordon, if that makes sense).

58- Ferguson- 4

Came on after 68 minutes, and was not in the game at all. First touch let him down on a couple of occasions, and overall an ineffective cameo.

Evan Ferguson - 6

Was full of zest when he came on for his Premier League debut but didn't have much time on the ball.

I think he'll need to stay at Brighton for a certain period time, probably until after his 18th birthday and until he counts as a homegrown player, before he could go on loan. So he'll probably stay at Brighton for at least the first half of next season.

I'd image Brighton will look to buy a forward in the summer, I wonder if ferguson would be allowed to go on loan.

Next season will see a number of irish forwards in the championship.

Will Keane, troy parrott (hopefully), adam idah, aaron connolly (likely), Michael Obafemi, Robinson, hogan.

Maybe Ferguson, maybe Scully.

It's a good level we want out players to be playing

Ogbene, Kayode and Kelly at Rotherham too, since they got got automatic promotion into the Championship.

Brighton 4 zip up against United, 20 minutes left, time to give Evan a go, surely.

Possibly might and I'd say Connolly will have to find himself a new club this season.

Would be good to see Ferguson out playing somewhere for even half a season. Don't think playing U23s is gonna benefit him much.

Hes 9 months older than Ferguson which is negligible. I would expect this means Ferguson will be bumped from match day squads.

I wonder if a loan somewhere might be a consideration

I think he's more of a winger/support striker than an out and out centre forward like Ferguson. Seems to be a short, tricky kind of player. So probably won't directly compete with him so much.

Would seem to be another sign that Connolly's future lies away from Brighton though.

He's still very young he's not at the needs first team football now stage. At a club like Brighton there is always a chance of cup and even league minutes. So I wouldn't be too fussed on a loan for him yet, let him score a hatful of goals at youth level and try to break into more first team squads/Cup games for a while.

Yeah he might be best served where he is for one more season I think.
He probably be on the bench if he went to a championship club too. Better to do it at Brighton

First things first for Ferguson is that he is fit and firing for pre seasons and tries to impress. He can then maybe look at getting a few cup games and the odd appearance off the bench. Brighton's striker options have form for being niggle prone too (Welbeck in particular) so if they don't add to these he may find himself coming off the bench a bit in League games.

Plenty appearances in Cup games and 15 odd senior Brighton appearancs between Cups and off the bench would be huge. They may also loan him out in January when he turns 18.

I can see this being the highly likely outcome. A three to four month loan spell with in league two would be a good humbling learning curve for him at that age.

A very Irish way of looking at it. We must never let our lads build any confidence LOL

I meant the context of young players copping on and getting the reality check that they have to put in the hard yards and work rate to make it in football especially at a high level, better off getting that as early as possible. A good example is Parrott this season and the progress he made from his change of attitude. The reality check of last season where he didn't hit the ground running in his loan moves to Millwall and Ipswich. It was a massive reality check for him, he has the ability, probably believed his own hype a bit but means nothing if you don't put in the work, apply yourself and make it happen for yourself.

Scrappy enough goal but he used his strength well to beat the defender to it.

It has been very hard to get updates on this game so no Idea how well he played overall. SSN would have been as well just sending the cameraman rather than sending the reporter they sent to cover it, she was absolutely useless.

Was it scrappy or did he take that with the inside of his heel? I can't make out.

Amazing where we were even 12 months ago regarding our young attacking players. The 3 of the original 4 (Parrott Idah Obafemi) have made big strides but now Ferguson Burns the likes of young Cian Hayes at Fleetwood Kenny, Armstrong at QPR of course Ogbene has bolted from the blue. So much attacking potential.

Ferguson might well be the most promising of the lot. Great to see him get off the mark and would be very happy to see him stay at Brighton playing 23s football and Cup games this season! Still not 18 until October extremely young!

Hopefully Potter gives him another start against Arsenal but he might be tempted to go with a stronger team given who they have been drawn against.

I'm not actually sure now that I've seen it again. There seems to  have only been one camera covering the game. Might have actually been a quality finish if we got a proper look at it.
