So Tokyo 2020 begins tomorrow. We sending our largest ever team probably due to fact Ireland qualified 2 sides in team events ( hockey and rugby 7s). Good chance of a few medals. Hopefully two in rowing, good chance of another in boxing. Following that best hope is golf or cycling. Going to be a lot of long nights and early mornings over here due to time difference

Wait till the 2032 Olympics in Brisbane. LOL

Thankfully the next 2 games are in cities with better TV viewing times ie Paris and then LA.

This is one of the reasons FIFA were reluctant to see Australia host the 2022 World Cup, brown envelopes being the main reason of course.

I love the Olympics both summer and winter, it's always great to get invested into a sport you never heard of and won't hear about until at least the next Olympics

Enjoy the Olympics but Japan got f'd in the A for this one. Absolute sickened that you wait so long and get the hosting rights and turns out to be snake bitten.
Would also be such a killer for an athlete to qualify and then catch covid and not be able to compete after all the hard work. No doubt there will be more cased during the tournament and it will be a sad way for it to end. Fingers crossed our lads and lassies at least get to compete and hopefully we get some medals.

The tallaght girl Adeleke looks a huge prospect for the future in the 100m and 200m, think this one came around too soon

Not an issue anymore, what with the new World Cup schedule having 4 matches per day (see Qatar 2022).  So wherever you are in the world, there'll always be at least one game on at a reasonable hour.

The year delay  hasn't helped her.... almost a certain gold medal for Ireland last year but could do well to make the final here.

Has she? that's a pity. I haven't followed her at all but there was a lot of talk about her last year.

Do we've any medal hopes? I presume we'll get a few boxing medals, Kellie Harrington any hope of gold? Thomas Barr is our only athletics hope yeah? Presume the rowers will be close?

It will be a great achievement for Thomas Barr to make the final. I highly doubt he will medal.

One of the media agencies, possibly AP, tipped us for 6 meals, three gold - Puspure, the two towers and Harrington, can't remember the other three.

Think we'll be waiting til the next one and Rhasidat Adeleke to have any athletics hopes, but I know pretty much zero about it, she just seems to have bags of potential.

Posted By: horsebox
Date Posted: 23 Jul 2021 at 9:28am
Rhasidat Adeleke didn't qualify as she didn't get the qualifying time (200m) and she was over looked for the mixed relay.

She then chose to run in the u20 Euro's where she casually won the 100m/20m double.

She's the real deal. I'd say she should make the Paris 200m final.

She broke the indoor record. Ciara Mageen holds the outdoor record.

No disrespect, but she has under performed in major championships. Hopefully she gets it right and makes the semis.

In theory, all 3 should make the semi's, but it doesn't always work out like that.

He's an interesting chap, was a star on the Irish circuit in the 80's, played for Blue Demons in Cork when the place was the centre of Irish Basketball, probably the best player we've ever produced. Retired and went on to have big jobs at New Ireland and Ulster Bank. He's had cancer the past few years. his son played a few years in the First Division

It's a huge achievement given her age, first Olympics, and the fact that she's only the 2nd swimmer from here to make an Olympic final. A fair bit less notorious than the other swimmer to make an Olympic final.

8th best in the WORLD !!!!!!!

Not 7th best in Middletown Junior High

It's a huge achievement given her age, first Olympics, and the fact that she's only the 2nd swimmer from here to make an Olympic final. A fair bit less notorious than the other swimmer to make an Olympic final.

The amount of tip toeing around it. No name mentioned just mentioning only one other swimmer had done it previously LOL

Surprised Osaka got beat in the tennis.
I was sure she would win gold.

Brits seem to win a lot of swimming now for the last few Olympics

Likely to be not enough. Swimming is odd in that the qualifiers are by time as opposed to placement as in Athletics (Fastest losers aside)

30 years later we're still watching repeats of the time the football team got to last 8 in the world

It's not.
He came 14th and only the top 8 go through to the final. You can't really ask more.

Some performance by Argentina in the 7's, down to 6 men after 3 minutes, ended up going down to 5 men late on.

Should get a medal in the women's rowing tonight (1.50am), just by looking at the betting.

Third favourites at 4/1

Bronze for Ireland and a potential another 2 medals to come in rowing. On another note I see Mark Kinsella's daughter wins a medal for GB in gymnastics

Great performance and result from Kurt Walker to overcome the world champion and gold medal fav.  Just watched the fight and he was somewhat lucky to get the second round but deserved to win the 1st and 3rd.  He now fights an American in the QFs who is coached by Billy Walsh!

After a poor start in the ring the boxing team have turned the corner and we now have a great shout at 3 medals Clap

Great news from from the boxers - hopefully they can get 2/3 medals now and we should get a gold and bronze in the rowing too.

When do the rowing men go in the final?

Aoife O’Rourke fights at 10.18 today and Nhat Nguyen plays in the badminton at 10.40
Both seem to be underdogs

Great performance. Took some big shots in the 2nd & 3rd but showed great head movement throughout the fight. Not easy as he was the taller fighter.

Was there no way Siobhan Haughey could have represented Ireland?

In saying that, just seen her on HK TV news, she speaks impressive Cantonese.
