This is actually an important game for Kenny. Anything scoreless is bad. A scoreless defeat will create almost irreparable damage for him. He has to be courageous in his team selection, and potentially drop some players who he would consider integral. This is about creating a team which fits a strategy, rather than vice-versa. As such, it might be time to look at Jack Byrne in the Wes role. Luton Town were recently in the non-league setup, they are not now, and are in the Championship. if Collins can be adapted to a system, why cant he score goals?

The midfield may be missing their obvious holding option in McCarthy, but can we persist with Hendrick and Hourihane? What has that achieved over seven games? James McClean once was our top scorer in a qualifying campaign, didn't Robbie Keane get dropped during the Euro 2016 campaign? Is it worth going back to the Robbie Brady well?

Yes, we are seeing a bit from Molumby etc, but this is losing relevance as we are no losing games in which we are not under serious pressure. I cant help but be concerned.

Really looking forward to this game! Hopefully Knight and Byrne start.

I would be tempted to call up Ronan and Parrott from the under 21s.

Collins looked lively has to start, Jack Byrne too.

Still reckon the 433 is killing us, needs to put 2 up front or we'll struggle to score we have very few players in the box when attacking.

100% agree, I like what Stephen is trying to do and we are playing well but not creating, our strikers have to come deeper and deeper. Or wingers are not creating anything and not getting in the box. We need to move to 3-5-2 put Doherty as the right wing back mclean/Manning on the left and play two strikers.

You could play a front 2 in a 352 or a 433 with 3 up front but if those players are Horgan, Idah and mcclean it really won't make a difference.

Glad this is the last game of 2020. I really relished these fixtures but utterly fed up now with the year.

Pray that we sign off a poxy year with a result.

If we go with the same "approach" we will get the same outcome. Another disjointed mess.

Maybe he learns how to set up a football team in the next few days but I doubt it. Lets persist with a 4-3-3 and our tactics which clearly dont amount to anything more than pass the ball, and players completely unsuited to doing even that basic demand.

Jack Byrne should start on Wed...he deserves more than ten minutes n has the skill n vision to unlock a defence....had a few nice touches tonight especially the through ball to Collins.....ok his pass to Knight wasn't inch perfect but the red might be a blessing in disguise.....

I remember the Scots singing that or something similar at Euro '92 during their final group game against Russia (I think). Scotland won that game handy as far as I remember so I'm taking that as an omen. All credit to clutching at straws.

                    Randolph
Doherty    Long      Duffy      O'Shea

   Brady     Cullen      Byrne

   Horgan   Collins     O'Dowda

Maybe this team for Wed night to start. He may stick with Idah and start Hourihane but id go with Byrne for more creativity.

Byrne should be started, and Collins is worth another look. O Dowda and Hourihane are poison but he’ll probably start both. Confused

Poison, no. Flatters to deceive, yes.

He looks like the type of player capable of weaving magic but is really ordinary. I can't put my finger on it but he strikes me as somebody that looks good at football, has some qualities but in actual fact is fairly mediocre. It's a weird one. Another lad that doesnt have a natural position. Not quick enough to be a winger and not enough craft to be an out and out forward.

Hopefully we see Travers start this game - he has a better chance of ending this season as Bournemouth's number 1 than Randolph has at West Ham.

I'd like to see Connor Ronan given a chance, along with Troy Parrott.

Would love to see something like this:

                 Travers
Doherty O'Shea Long Manning
      Byrne Cullen Ronan
       Parrott Idah Brady

Kenny wont want to play a much different side to the one tonight. I reckon, injury aside, the back 5 will stay the same thats for sure.

He will have to make atleast two changes as Hourihane and Hendrick are suspended.

Probably add in one or two injury pull outs and a random case of Covid too.

I reckon there is - 21s have nothing to play for and Parrott has been named in previous Kenny squads.

We should beat Bulgaria even with all our suspensions/injuries but they haven't lost by anymore than 2 goals in any of the previous games so they're not going to be total pushovers either. They will definitely feel we're there for the taking on Wednesday night.

The fact Wales needed a 94th minute winner against them at home shows that they're not going to lay down to us.

I can see Kenny making some more changes.

Would like to see something like this -

        Kellegher
Doherty--Long--Oshea--Manning
Byrne--Cullen--Brady
Knight--Curtis--O'Dowda

I'd also promote Ronan, Coventry and Parrott from the u21's.

Edit - swapped out Cullen for Hourihane.

How is this even possible? If they are in the bubble as its called then where are they catching it from? Also why so many Irish players catch it yet no English or other nations, is it the Hse stringent testing that's turning up a load of False Positives?

God Cyrus might find his way back in at right back. Does Kenny call up a right back or left back now? O'Connor from u'21s? Greg Cunningham? Derrick Williams is probably in line actually, is he available?

Johnny Hayes deserves another shot at this stage, far more effective than  O'Dowda.

They are infecting each other within the bubble.

It’s a highly infectious virus.

I pay no attention to this “no close contacts” spiel when one player is positive. Because they are all training, attending team meetings and meals, etc. And it takes a few days after coming into contact before the person will have a positive test. So there may be others before Bulgaria (if another test is done) or more probably after Bulgaria game.

Thats way we should go. Or give Ryan Manning a run at LB. Nothing to lose

Look at the team (excluding goalkeeper) that we can make from missing players:

Coleman Doherty Egan Stevens
Hendrick Browne Molumby
Robinson Connolly McClean

--

.. as well as Arter and McGoldrick (retired)

I'd have the unavailable mccarthy in for the unavailable Browne and the unavailable mcgoldrick in for the unavailable mcclean but otherwise a good unavailable team.

How is this even possible? If they are in the bubble as its called then where are they catching it from? Also why so many Irish players catch it yet no English or other nations, is it the Hse stringent testing that's turning up a load of False Positives?

They are infecting each other within the bubble.

It’s a highly infectious virus.

I pay no attention to this “no close contacts” spiel when one player is positive. Because they are all training, attending team meetings and meals, etc. And it takes a few days after coming into contact before the person will have a positive test. So there may be others before Bulgaria (if another test is done) or more probably after Bulgaria game.

Yep, it's not just ROI, eg:

"Tottenham Hotspur forward Son Heung-min has been confined to his room when not training after six of his South Korea team-mates tested positive for Covid-19 on international duty in Austria, officials have said.

Although Son, 28, tested negative, he and the rest of the squad have been told to stay in their hotel rooms in Vienna, unless they are training."

Norway were even more unlucky (one player positive):

"The Norwegian players were on their way to the airport on Saturday to catch a chartered flight to Bucharest when authorities told them that such a journey would breach the country's stringent coronavirus measures because a player in the squad had tested positive."

Suspensions, injury, retirements, illness. All bad things in and of themselves, but at this point, its out of control. Perhaps a product of the amount of football being played in order to catch up, but its not good for the players.

Interestingly though, there are enough players to go "cautious", and I think it would be a mistake. This presents an opportunity to test players.

Says Idah out through injury  with Hendrick and Molumby suspended.

The FAI are looking for anyone under 30 who owns a pair of football boots.  Prior experience not required.  Training to be given on site.

I've been very impressed with McEneff when I've watched Shamrock Rovers play (fairly regularly at that)

He might not grab the headlines that Byrne does, but I'm sure in Bradley's eyes he's as key to the team as Byrne is.

I reckon he could definitely play at a higher level if he pushed for it.

Ya decent players. Burke can defo put the ball in the net anyway. But again Doherty and james out with Covid. Like come on Kenny is jinxed at this point it seems. Every day he wakes up he must think oh FCUUKKKKKKKK. its laughable at this stage.

dont know this McEneff lad at all - what kind of player is he? What role would he fill in Kenny’s system if he started on Wednesday (not saying that’s likely) - just curious to see how he could fit in.
