Dundalk chairman Bill Hulsizer says that he stands over the comments made in an email sent to senior officials at other Airticity League clubs over the weekend but that he will only elaborate on charges made against the FAI once the recipients have had the opportunity to reply to what he describes as a “cry for help”.

Hulsizer, who succeeded Mike Treacy as the club’s chairman at the end of last year, is scathing in the email, which The Irish Times has seen.

“Dundalk FC and myself have been lied to, stolen from, insulted and disrespected by the FAI,” he says in an extraordinary attack. “I am sure many of you feel the same, and have suffered similar treatment. Thursday’s meeting has convinced me that the FAI are masters’ of spin and want everyone to focus on the future and forget about the past.

He goes on to describe “the FAI of the past,” as “a failed business model,” and contends that while John Delaney is universally held responsible, others, some of them still active and influential at the association, must take a share of the blame for some of the current failings.

Ultimately, he suggests that the tone of one of the league’s recent working group meetings and some of the documentation circulated after another; “indicates the FAI intends to treat the clubs of Ireland as subservient to the FAI.

“They [the FAI] have not earned nor do they deserve that right,” he says, adding that “We, Dundalk FC, are prepared to work with (not for) the FAI to promote the League of Ireland, or to challenge the FAI publicly in all the forums available (Fifa, Uefa, Irish Governmen and most importantly the Irish people).”

He concludes by asking owners of other clubs to support his position.

Contacted for a comment, Hulsizer said: “I will stand behind everything that I have said there I don’t think it is fair to my fellow club owners to say anything more until they have had a chance to consider the email.”

Behind closed doors, the American is said to have been repeatedly critical of the association in recent months and is understood to feel aggrieved, on behalf of his club, with regard to the way Stephen Kenny was hired by the FAI, the association’s much more recent interest in Ruairdhi Higgins and other aspects of the financial relationship between the two.

He appears to favour a complete break by clubs with the association and may well have been angered by an exchange at the working group meeting of April 23rd during which, according to the minutes: “It was clarified that the bottom line is the FAI would not agree in any circumstances that an independent structure will be set up to run the Premier Division commercially; it has to be seen as under the subsidiary of the FAI.”

Brand awareness

He also expresses irritation with regard to the early stages of the process to draw up a new participation agreement to replace one that was, during Delaney’s time in charge of the association, widely seen as an instrument for suppressing any criticism, or even questions, from clubs.

Privately, though, senior officials in the association’s current leadership have accepted that the old participation agreement was entirely unfair and the suggestion has been that there is a willingness to move towards something far more equitable, with the end of June mentioned as a target date.

Officials from some other clubs said yesterday that they believe the association’s representatives at the meetings have come across as sincere on this point and that the process seems to be progressing quite well.

Figures given to the meeting of the 23rd, meanwhile, suggest that the FAI has been making a profit of just under €300,000 on running the league with Uefa funding of 1.045 million, sponsorship of €375,000, television revenues of €341,000, Streaming income of €110,000 and €200,000 in fines more than enough to cover the cost of prize money, administration and other expenses. Delaney had always claimed the association subsidised the league and refused to allow the clubs see the figures.

The clubs have also been shown the results of market research which suggests significantly increased interest levels in the league –up by around 20 per cent since 2016 – with the senior club game here enjoying good brand awareness and a positive image among the population at large.

The association has committed to working with clubs on a number of fronts, including investment in stadiums and other facilities as well as commercial revenues and the development of the women’s and underage games.

Its own revenues seem increasingly likely to be further hit by the Covid-19 crisis, however, with growing doubts about the prospect of the Nations League games scheduled for the autumn going ahead and at the very least there seems very likely to be severe restrictions on attendances.

Interim CEO Gary Owens recently acknowledged that the three home games – against Finland, Wales and Bulgaria – are financially important to the FAI but in an interview with this newspaper in recent days, Dr Cillian De Gascun, a member of the National Public Health Emergency Team, was asked about whether he envisaged England and France being able to come to Dublin for international rugby matches next spring.

“In my own head, I would like to think the Six Nations can happen,” he said, “but I don’t see how at this point.”

Everythings grand with the FAI. They have treated the league and football in general well.

Its because clubs have been afriad/wont speak out against the FAI, football's in the state it is and then clubs make a stand and you have gobsh*tes like you making a laugh out of it.

Have a read of Neil O'Riordan's twitter and he has a link to an article this morning, proving the FAI are upto the same tricks now than when JD was there.

New FAI my arse.

Bahave yourself DaithiLOL He’s spot on here and long overdue. If clubs had have stood up a long time ago maybe some of the damage done to LOI could have been prevented or lessened to some degree. Speaks volumes however that it takes a yank to start the ball rolling regardless of what club it comes from.

In cases like this, if this can get moving of course, its a chance for everyone (supporters included if they can be grown up enough) to try and ensure some sort of betterment for the league as a whole.

The "New" FAI have a new CEO lined up for a position they are planning to advertise

That should be a major warning to everybody.

Niall O'Riordan is one of the top Irish soccer writers. The above has been around Dundalk since Thursdays meeting between clubs and FAI. Its something all the clubs know about.

Questions are needed answering, and judging by Thursday meeting its the same old same old. Niall Quinn coming out saying it was a good meeting etc when the clubs left bemused at what took place.

Change in the FAI and change in the LOI are 2 very different things...one is about tickets and piss ups away with the lads around Europe and the other is to ensure the local club gets funding for their ground to be built or youth systems to be pushed

I know he is. There's also plenty of other top journos out there who aren't touching that story about the CEO job though. Why is it only in The Sun? I know plenty involved in LOI clubs who aren't aware of it and would be aware what was discussed last Thursday.

He's right about the FAI stealing from Dundalk. They held back the Champions League money for ages.

they were robbing every club in the league while telling all of junior soccer that the loi was the reason they were getting no money.

That’s €4.2m in the 14 years although the Irish Times figures didn’t include participation fees which would up that figure by approx €3.5m. Yet the man who was in charge of the league still has a job in the fai.

Getting rid of JD was only a small step in a big process. The people who turned a blind eye, benifited from or supported the man are still in power. You can tell me what you want....Fran Gavin knew those figures and was at the table on the 23 April talking about change.......it is now time for the full truth to come out and not to allow JD be seen as the fall guy allowing the rest to hide behind him.

Will be interesting to see how clubs, big and small, react to this matter being made public. Something deep inside me says they will hope the angry old American goes away.

League of Ireland supporters have been clued into Delaney for years.

The ole ole brigade let us down - a number of ybig too - have kept my eye on ybig since first fanzine too when I emailed them to complain about having ads in it 😂- will never forget the fans praising Delaney at the cringefest in the rugby bar beside lansdowne before one of the matches (v Russia??). Davey Kehoe made an absolute dickhead of himself.

Some very decent articles on Delaney by Daniel McDonnell around that time too. If only more listened, the plug may have been pulled earlier.

These lads were used and abused by Delaney, Delaney had them in his pocket and exploited them, I'd say they might still try and defend him to try and save face.

The only club in LOI that players never had to take any kind of pay cut, no non playing staff member laid off all on full pay.

If they wanted a way out, they would be gone by now.

The FAI will be hoping they are gonna go soon, because they are only club owners who have money to take them to the cleaners through courts

That says more about the other clubs than Dundalk though Daithi. I really cant see your issue here if you’ve any sort of interest in the LOI other than some sort of petty point scoring exercise. Long overdue and more power to Dundalk (kills me to type that btw) in this. Theres a chance here to really achieve something if clubs act as one off the pitch v the FAI.

Firstly I was going to LOI matches long before internationals and only recently got back to that, absolutely no issue whatsoever,  I would love to see the league carry on the way it has been going numbers wise and with better investment (and Maybe independently if doable), not trying to point score either,  although I did dangle a bit of bait my bad , I am merely pointing out that Dundalk are at this point in time the only club making waves and the yank would have been better advised waiting on all other clubs to back him before going on a solo rant

Peak 6 have been vocal in their views of the FAI from minute they joined Dundalk. They have brought it up on numerous occasions when dealing with the press, releasing statements etc...

Certainly your bait dangling influenced my reply. In short, LOI clubs don’t have a glorious past in speaking as one, quite the opposite. Just think back to the 5k marketing money a few seasons ago, an absolutely disgusting, less than the leftover crumbs gesture from the FAI/JD. Only Derry and Pats made a stand iirc whilst the rest lapped it up. Is it not the case that all clubs are in receipt of the letter? They will either come out in support or opposition to its contents, or unsurprisingly, many will likely say nothing and the status quo of breadcrumbs continue with the same f**knut as usual in the FAI pulling the strings.

It was sorely misjudged for the new FAI to wheel out that plank Fran Gavin and the backlash is justified. How he hasn’t been let go at the 1st opportunity is beyond me - his incompetence knows no bounds and f**ked over all these clubs as much as anyone in there. Sad state of affairs that he is still in Abbottstown.

No surprise either that The other clubs have kept their counsels. If there was any time they needed the FAI’s support; it’s now. PEAK6 can carry on oblivious to that fact.. The rest can’t.

We’ll see what happens but I think the only positive that may come out of it is Gavin gets the push. Or maybe he’ll get a stay of execution to see how his last great initiative pans out....
