For the second year running Ireland will have its biggest representation at the William Hill World Darts Championship with no fewer than eight players from the island stepping up to the oche.

Two of the contingent are making their debuts at the famous Alexandra Palace venue, which boasts a £500,000 cheque for the winner, with Meath's Keane Barry, at the age of just 17, set to become the third youngest competitor ever at the showpiece event and the youngest Irish player ever.

Heard about this kid a few years ago playing in the local leagues and hammering county players

Burness from co down playing in the first game, great show case for him. Remember Keane Barry playing at a few of the local tournaments round newry when he was like 12, throwing up at the board but still peppering the treble 20's; great prospect!

No great surprise there, but only checked results- Rob Cross gone as well Shocked

Poor oul Barney, Jaysus ya would be worried about him as a human being. These days, ya hear so much about depression and depression (generally) being a hidden disease, Barney makes very little attempt to hide it, or hide the impact that defeat has on him.

Hopefully he'll find a bit of peace with himself, his game and his great achievements in the sport from the commentary booth in the very near future, the man is simply a legend of the sport. Even though it only happened once in the PDC WC, he took on Phil Taylor at the very height of Taylor's powers and beat him in a (one of the greatest) world final, there's not too many have that on their darting CV.

If he decides to stay away from it all, I think most darts fans would wish the Dutch ex-postman 'Ray Barneveld' (as he was when he won his first BDO WC in 1998- no 'van', at least according to the BBC) all the best and thanks for the memories.

What happen Rob Cross - when he won he was unstoppable.
You thought he would be at the very top for years.

Very low odds on MVG.

Gerwyn Price the only other contender IMO... Great win for young Ciaran Teehan there

does van barneveld suffer from depression?
He seemed very down in that interview
You couldn’t be that disappointed over losing a game of darts when you’re almost done anyway as a player

Not a great night for the Irish lads, Willie O'Connor won in a poor quality game (admitted he was terrible afterwards), Lennon unlucky from reports (didn't see it meself), and young Barry looks an unbelievable talent.

Van Der Voort had too much for him on the night, but on the form Barry showed, he would have had a good chance against some of the other players lining up tonight, main example being Dolan, who was simply awful V Anderson.

Michael Smith gone as well, dunno if this is setting the tournament up for a load of shocks, or if it is going to be one that MVG sails to the final & wins it without too much bother like last year. There will probably be an outsider in the last 4, but other than a shock for MVG, ya would the rest of the outside contenders to probably be someone who has been in form in the past & struggling recently to make up the other semi finalists, ie nobody who will actually win it or trouble MVG. Anderson, Lewis, Peter Wright or lads of that ilk.

Not sure on Price, I know he's in good form, but he's never done a whole lot at this tournament.

A monumental f**k up from O’Connor. 6 darts with 56 left, hits T16, ends up on D2. Price misses 120. O’Connor starts throwing then at D1. Unbelievable. What a fckin disaster.

Fallon Sherrock, what a woman. Clap

Probably the 2nd most delighted person to have won that match, if Barry (not a man known for missing an opportunity)  had any doubts about putting her in the Premier League, they're surely gone now.

Edit; Congrats to another Barry, young Keane- on winning the World junior championship as well. Up there with MVG, VDV and Wattimena for the sheer ridiculousness of the pace he throws at. Great talent, a little bit more improvement and we could see our first Irish world champion in a few years.

Webster should have taken that game. He will be disappointed. Lewis didnt play well but somehow managed to get over the line. Couple of misses on big doubles for Webster when he had chances.

Think only his own arrogance or complacency will beat MVG at this stage. Anderson gone, and we're probably looking at Price (very good tonight) or at a push, Lewis or Peter Wright upsetting the odds, its hard to see past the likes of those lads getting to the final. Maybe Aspinall, Van De Bergh or Van De Zwann can put together a run to SF's but hard to see any of them winning it against MVG.

Sherrock is a genuinely brilliant finisher, might even be one of the very best if her form in this tournament is anything to go by, but just doesn't score enough. Still, tis easier improve that part of the game than the finishing, so hopefully she'll improve on that aspect and become a genuine threat to the top buckos in the near future.

If the below article from the BBC anything to go by would imagine the BDO won't be around for much longer. Prize fund to be slashed by up to 60% women's winning getting 8000 instead of the 20000 initially promised Shocked...

Put that into perspective Fallon sherrock got 25000 for her run to the 3rd round of the pdc tournament so even if she goes all the way to winning the women's tournament she will win under a third of her winnings from the pdc event

The standard has gone down this year IMO

MVG nowhere near his best last night and still got to the final comfortably. Not too many thrilling matches.

I think taylor not being about has seen the standard slip, he used to drive MVG and the rest on, as they were all desperate to beat him. Used to get some cracking games at the world championship, hardly any this year that I can think of.

MVG will need to up his game in the final, though I would have doubts if Wright would have the bottle to beat him if he did underperform, given the amount of finals he has lost to MVG.

For sure but it's a lot more than that too, it's not about the darts anymore with 99% of the "fans" who go.

I'd love to see the Darts World Championship require people to ditch the costumes, less sh*tty over used chants/music etc being played throughout and save it for the intervals.

Let the Darts Premier League be about the party atmosphere and loading up on booze in stupid costumes, but the World's need to become far more professional imo.

Suzuki won the womens title again. Shes a good player,  she could potentially be good enough to earn a PDC card. Be good to see her on tv some more.

Most darts players are.

Was watching on eurosport.  Surprised at how good they actually were. Watched many mens major games where they weren't as accurate

Suzuki is a fine player. Was in the PDC worlds. She was well behind in the game and came back and had chances to win but didnt take them. I forget the guys name who it was she played. She could have had the headlines that Fallon Sherrock got a few nights after.

She lost to Big John Henderson in the PDC championship, and should have won. Scores a bit more than Sherrock does, but (generally) not the same finishing ability.

Laughing at PM's comment on Keane Barry, he does look like a minature oul fella, but fcukin hell he can play. Not quite sure on this, but seeing as he holds both (junior) versions (PDC & BDO) of the World Championship at the moment, does that make him the first undisputed World Champion since Phil Taylor in 1992 (when there was only one tournament and one world champion ?)

He has had the distinct advantage of being able to play pub darts since he was about 8!

Suzuki was beaten unluckily by John Richardson.  Keane has some future in the game, great ability,  attitude  and tempermant, young lad he beat needs to calm down a bit.

I was just reading that Wayne Warren still doesn’t know his prize for winning the BDO. I can’t see them having a tournament next year.

The whole thing was a shambles. Heard Anthony Hamilton interviewed the other day. Think he was knocked out in the quarters, could be the round before that, and he didn't know if he was going to receive any prize money at all.

As befitting the tournament his prizes are a Faux Silver Salver, a £500 voucher for Autoglass and a 10 holiday in Benidorm where he will play in some exhibition matches against Sticky Vicky.
