Before the premier league season starts this week, can you name the Irish players with the most appearances in the PL for each club? https://www.sporcle.com/games/IrishAbroad/name-the-player-with-most-pl-appearances-for-each-club" rel="nofollow - https://www.sporcle.com/games/IrishAbroad/name-the-player-with-most-pl-appearances-for-each-club

There are seven Ireland players starting today's Premier League fixtures - John Egan, Callum Robinson, Enda Stevens, David McGoldrick, Seamus Coleman, Conor Hourihane, and Shane Duffy - for the first time since January 2018

We’re back baby

You asked if I'd be anyone from history, fact or fiction, dead or alive:
I said "I'd be Tony Cascarino, circa 1995"

Interesting that pretty much all our premier league defenders are playing in systems with three cbs:

Doherty
Egan
Duffy
Stevens

Only Coleman isn’t

I remember checking the Sunday papers for Irish Premier league appearances 15 to 20 years ago - the target was always to find 20 Irish players playing in a weekend. About half the time you'd find that many or more. We're still miles away from that now but good to find some improvement starting to come through after the last few years.

15-20 years ago the competition was far less fierce. You had guys playing in the top 4 teams that probably wouldn't get near top-half sides nowadays.

Not only that, he's the first Irish player to score in the Premier League! Eddie McGoldrick was second, about half an hour later

Watching Blackburn - Luton, Blackburn have Greg Cunningham, Darragh Lenihan, and Derrick Williams as 3 of their starting back 4.  James Collins starts for Luton and just scored a decent header, was the one non-Irish member of the back 4 who let him get free, right back Elliott Bennett.

Greed has won, big finance has won. Whatever small role elite clubs still play in the local communities from which they grew is dwarfed now by their position as global brands.

There are eight Ireland players starting today's Premier League fixtures
This is the third time this season eight players have named in the starting XI on the same day - which hasn't happened since the 2016/17 season (it happened eight times in total that season)

I really enjoyed this. Particularly as it didn't go the direction of simple revisionism. At the time of appointment, given the trend of appointing recently retired internationals with little to no management experience there was a general sense of optimism (even if it wasn't shared by everyone and his inexperience certainly was questioned).

I would agree that the decline in Irish international football began before this. Certainly the Kerr era for me was a low point and was glad when that ended. It seems that sometime during that period the international team lost its confidence and hasn't gotten it back (bar in a hand full of one off performances).

The other notable thing about the Stan era for me was that it could well have been moderately successful had Bobby Robson's health not deteriorated.

we're delighted to welcome Ireland and Brighton striker Rianna Jarrett to the show to discuss her career, and the rising role of minorities in sport in Ireland. Does Sheffield United's success in the Premier League give any clues as to how the new Ireland manager will use their Irish players? Will the Irish players on the fringes of the Southampton squad have a part to play in the manager's future plans? A year ago, Jason Knight hadn't made his professional debut - 12 months on he could be their player of the season. Finally, on the occasion of his passing, we remember Jack Charlton's time in charge of the Irish national side, and what it meant to each of us.
