Absolutely ridiculous when you consider the size of the stadium.

That will probably be enough for each club though. Can see very few travelling over midweek to Baku.

Can't imagine anyone not getting tickets, hardly going to be 56000 that aren't Arsenal or Chelsea fans travelling over.

Arsenal fans have charted a plane over, £950 return but its direct, very hard to find a cheap way over.

Arsenal allocated 6000 tickets only, with over 40k season ticket holders just as well its a (unt of a place to get to.

When NI played out there, a lot of fans travelled via Budapest, which had (still has?) a daily non-stop schedule to Baku.

Budapest is a great place for a stopover on the way out or back, too, though Baku itself was excellent.

Also important to note people who are thinking of going over to Azerbaijan who have been to Armenia might be refused entry.

Posted By: SuperDave84
Date Posted: 10 May 2019 at 4:17pm
I don't think you are refused entry just because you've been to Armenia. You get refused entry if you are Armenian or if you have visited Nagorno-Karabakh, or whatever they're calling it these days. Simply having gone to Yerevan isn't a problem.

It is a difficult spot to get to all the same: the only neighbouring country you can easily travel there from is Georgia. There's only really one airport in Azerbaijan as well, and only two major international airports that are any use in Georgia. Compared to Lyon last year, this is a lot tougher for fans of the competing teams.

However, on the tickets, the reason they have so few for the competing teams is that they have something like 35,000 for the general public in the lottery phase. I know that that still leaves 20,000 for UEFA & sponsors and whoever, but I presume the Champions League final is even worse.

I believe UEFA have twisted a few Azeri arms and he will be granted a visa this time.

Yeah, it's f**king impossible to get to Baku. It takes a minimum of €400 for flights and a week off work. That's nonsense. You need three days off work regardless.

It is singularly the worst venue ever chosen for a European final, regardless of the fact that it's two English sides playing there. It's basically f**king Iran!

It’s mid week, short notice and would mean 6 days travel.

I can see Chelsea winning this. Hazard will be off in the summer to Real but will put in one last top performance.

It’s an indictment of the selection.

If player safety cannot be ensured, there should be no question of selecting such a host.

Exactly I'd imagine Baku is a lovely city and their stadium is an amazing stadium but if as you say a players safety can't be assured then it shouldn't have been considered.

What if two Armenian teams (I know very unlikely) had of made the final?

What if Armenia qualify for Euro 2020? (again I know very unlikely)- They'll have to be placed which assures them they won't play in Baku. Which I'm not 100% sure can be done.

Remember in 1998-1999 when we had games against Yugoslavia shifted around due to the geo political situation. Unless Yugoslavia had been barred from competing in the Euro 2000 qualifiers, that was the only sensible thing that could have been done. But in this instance, a venue was selected, when there are others to choose from, where the geo political sitiation is fraught, and is now impacting what happens on the pitch.

I wonder if Mickhi making a political point here - no way anything would have happened to him, the Azeri's would have had him guarded to within an inch of his life. You can be sure UEFA had them well waned too

Quite possible he's making a political stance as unlike British-Armenian fans, he was told he'd be granted a visa for the game. However, it's a decision he shouldn't have to take and shows the utter stupidity & greed from UEFA to stage the game there considering the travel difficulties for fans.

How they've secured 3 group games and a 1/4 final in the Euros is a disgrace.

Sadly the case. Just look at Russia and Qatar. Russia obviously did a good job but no doubt some serious payments were made. Qatar should never have got it and it should have been a joint bid with a number of countries in the region.

Chelsea fans not happy with the club.

"We are extremely disappointed that Chelsea FC have been unable or unwilling to help Chelsea supporters overcome the travel, expense and logistics in order for them to support the team in a European final," the statement read. "The lack of a statement from Chelsea FC is also disappointing.

It's in f**king Baku.

It's a disaster to get to, it's a weeknight, any number of the fans will already have been all over Europe following them in the Europa League, it necessitates another three days off work; I can see why they can't sell 6,000 tickets for it.

Baku was literally a provincial Soviet backwater until about 30 years ago.

I’m really surprised after the league cup final shambles he managed to get Chelsea 3rd and to the Europa league final.

He should play the No.2 keeper and leave after this match.

Nope, all of the PL top 4 will be in the CL next season irregardless of what happens in either European Final. 5 teams maximum per country allowed in the CL now afaik. No doubt that will get bigger in the next few years as we move to a hybrid CL/SuperLeague, along with a 3rd tier European comp.

Exactly.

If, say, Spurs had finished fifth, Arsenal sixth, and United fourth, then United would miss out if and only if Spurs and Arsenal both win.

It's a disaster to get to, it's a weeknight, any number of the fans will already have been all over Europe following them in the Europa League, it necessitates another three days off work; I can see why they can't sell 6,000 tickets for it.
Agree with all of that, though with (indirect) flight to Tbilisi and overnight train to Baku etc, it would take more than 3 days for many.

True, but having been there myself, it's more like "Las Vegas on the Caspian" these days.

Which is why I can't understand why their shiny new airport has such limited capacity.

I f**king hate the Daily Mail.

Big banner headline that Arsenal fans in Baku were stopped by police for wearing Mkhitaryan shirts and the subheading that they were "halted for a time then allowed to move on".

It's f**king shocking that police most likely only doing their job and telling lads that their attire might cause them some trouble from degenerate reprobates is somehow repackaged in a headline as the police harassing the spectators when the reality is the exact opposite, and the police are more likely trying to help them avoid harassment.

Yeah, no sh*t sherlock. If I walked down the Falls Road with a shirt saying "f**k the ra", I'd expect if the PSNI saw me, they'd stop me and tell me to cover it up, for fear of me ending up in a shallow grave somewhere, and the same if I walked down the Shankill Road with a shirt saying "the queen likes it up the arse".

I do want to go. If we draw them, I'm definitely heading, even if they are ruled by a kleptocratic despot.

Also, I don't understand why an airport with two nearly parallel runways over a km apart can't have a heap of flights in and out. There mustn't be the demand, is all I can think of.

Tbf everywhere in the English media are running with the story.

It first appeared on Twitter but the actual context of the story is unknown, the only people who would actually be able to verify the truth is the people in Baku - I suspect it's the Police warning people about the potential consequences rather than bullying them because of the shirt.

Chelsea or Arsenal?

Even in a quasi-dictatorial regime like Azerbaijan, I'd imagine the police are under instruction to be on their best behaviour for the Europa League final. It makes so much more sense that they'd be out to avoid incidents rather than cause one. That's what makes it so much more likely that they were trying to warn people to cover up. There doesn't seem to be any suggestion that they've tried to remove jerseys, just make them less visible when out and about in Baku.

I hope there are thousands of fans wearing Mkhtaryan jerseys in the ground tonight, all the same.

In complaining in the Commons the other day about Mikytarian not being able to play etc, Labour Deputy Leader Tom Watson added this:

"It's also a scandal that Arsenal fans with Armenian names are being denied visas to Azerbaijan. It shows a deeply ugly side to the beautiful game and is completely unacceptable."

"UEFA’s inclusion and diversity policy says: "Everyone has the right to enjoy football, no matter who you are, where you are from or how you play.

Countries that force players to choose between their sport and their safety, and discriminate against travelling fans, must not be allowed to host future events."

And then there's this:

Arsenal players' plans to show support for Henrikh Mkhitaryan during the Europa League final have been blocked by strict UEFA rules.

The squad had spoken about how they could show support for their Armenian team-mate, who feels he is not able to travel to Azerbaijan for security reasons.

Wearing shirts with Mkhitaryan's name on the back for the warm-up was discussed.

But UEFA insiders have confirmed any such moves are prohibited by strict rules.

How can they ascertain whether a name is Armenian? Due to the fact it's comprised almost entirely of consonants?

I guess in the same way you can usually tell if a surname is eg Irish, French, Russian, Greek or Swedish etc.

And I'd confidently predict that in the case of doubt or ambiguity, the policy is just to refuse the Visa.

Which is why this guy never played the Baku Palladium:
Shahnour Vaghinag Aznavourian (or Շահնուր Վաղինակ Ազնավուրյան  in Armenian - pick the consonants out of that! LOL)

Armenian names are pretty distinctive. It’s all pretty ridiculous, if true, of course. It wouldn’t be like the Mail to exaggerate, but Watson shouldn’t have any reason to here.

If Chelsea win tonight, where does that CL place go to? Is some lower ranked European nation going to get an extra CL spot?

I love the innocence of that!

Nothing happens, there will either be 79 or 80 teams in it next year, depending on tonight's result. If Chelsea win, Lyon are then put in the groups for next season, rather than be in a playoff.

The main stadium in Baku, and I assume it is still there, was named after the 'Russian linesman' from '66 and all that.
I think he refereed the final in 1970. A bit of an oddity all the same.

The stadium being populated mostly by locals instead of fans of the 2 teams doesn't exactly help.

Neither does the ridiculous distance between the pitch and the stands for that matter.

Completely agree.

If it were up to me, I'd cut the amount of teams involved by 50% and lets have the good old UEFA Cup back. Thumbs Up
