With the new premier league season starting this week, I'll be publishing a series of stats blogs during the week focusing on appearance data from the top division. Today's blog focusses on the last Irish player to score in the Premier League for each team in the 2018/19 PL season. How many can you name?

Interesting, I'll have a guess

Arsenal - O'Leary
Bournemouth - Arter
Brighton - Duffy
Burnley - Ward
Cardiff - Mason
Chelsea - Duff
Palace - Delaney
Everton - Coleman
Fulham - Duff
Huddersfield - N/A?
Leicester - No idea
Liverpool -  Keane
City - Ireland
United - O'Shea
Newcastle - Clark
Saints - Long
Spurs - Keane
Watford - Hoban
West Ham - O'Brien
Wolves - Doyle

Alan Lee played for Huddersfield

The question says in the EPL though, a lot of clubs won't have any in that case.

Arter, Duff (both), Huddersfield, Keane(both), Ireland, Clark. O'Brien, Doyle all correct.
This is for games in the Premier League only, not Championship, cup, Europe, etc

Good catch. There's five clubs without an Irish goalscorer in the Premier league from this season's list of clubs

yep, well done.
I updated the Premier league data for the site over the summer, and have counted 42 players who have appeared at least once in the Premier League, but have not (yet) earned an international cap:  http://irish-abroad.appspot.com/Blog?id=3079832700603167034" rel="nofollow - http://irish-abroad.appspot.com/Blog?id=3079832700603167034

Final question before the new premier league season starts, when was the last time Ireland named a starting XI of players who were all at premier league clubs?
Hint: it hasn't happened under the current, or previous manager

This is the stat I'm least confident in, so the answer I have might be wrong

I'd guess at being against France or Switzerland in 2005, at the end of Brian Kerr's reign.

No, Clinton Morrison (who started both games) was at Palace in the Championship/First Division at the time
He did start the season with Birmingham in the Premier League, but had moved to Palace two weeks before the France game

Thought he was still at Birmingham then. I think it must be earlier in that campaign then but Faroe Islands was the last competitive game before France and Ian Harte played that game. Pretty sure he was with Levante at the time.

Doyle started against Sweden, he was with Reading in the championship, Wayne Henderson started against Denmark, he was at Preston at the time

Getting there...

Morrison & Kenny's last games were against Cyprus IIRC and they were both Championship players at the time. I'm going to say Wales in March '07.

Douglas was with Leeds when he started against Wales, McGeady started against Slovakia while he was still at Celtic

You're not too far away

Wayne Henderson started against the Czechs in the 1-1 game, McGeady started the 1-0 loss

Still almost there, there's not many more games from that time.

It's a Staunton game. Can't be too many left at this stage!

Doyle was still with Reading in the Championship for the Chile game. That was the season they were promoted, so I guess you'd have to argue on what date does the club actually get promoted, if you follow.
FWIW Miller was on loan at Leeds at the time as well.

McShane started against San Marino, was still with West Brom in the Championship

So the competitive fixtures around that time were
Czech Republic 1-1
San Marino 5-0
San Marino 2-1
Wales 1-0
Slovakia 1-0

And it wasn't any of those.... right.

Is there a list anywhere of the Irish players playing for Premier League clubs this season?

I assume there are probably a few with young lads nowhere near the first team but are still in the squad.

Pretty sure the squad that travelled to those games had almost no premier league players.

How about Germany away in Stuttgart?

It does need to be updated, Arter's gone on loan to Cardiff, and Wilson and O'Hara won't appear for their clubs this season either

It was Bolivia, and no. Andy Keogh started against Ecuador, he was still with Wolves in the Championship
Nicky Colgan was in goals against Bolivia, he was with Barnsley at the time.

That game is correct, as in the starting XI were all Premier League players at the time, but I'm not 100% sure if it's the last time this happened. I am pretty sure though.

Saw this on social media earlier.
European countries without a single starter in CL and EL this week, and what nations league they are in

League B - Ireland
League C - Lithuania
League D - Andorra, Faroes, San Marino, Gibraltar, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Moldova

Great company we are keeping!

Show that to Martin O'Neill and he will say we are over achieving that we should be in league D.

No, clearly not however it is an interesting stat nonetheless.

Of course not O'Shea, but there are players from the north in other positions who are better than ours.
Its an alarming stat given the other nations mentioned.

Lies, lies and damned statistics. There is a kernel of truth in it though.

It’s not a great stat alright but what northern players do you think would get into our starting 11 if we were at full strength?

I'm not so sure if it's an alarming stat or just a consequence of fact that essentially all of our players ply their trade in England. We have plenty of guys who would be good enough to play for Romanian/Danish/Swedish/Polish/Norwegian qualifiers to the CL and EL, the fact that they've chosen to play for mid-ranking English sides instead doesn't make them any worse.

I'd sooner have Lafferty leading our line than Long. More than anything though these stats are a reflection of how we have a domestic league of the quality of a Group D nation.

A pretty damning statistic, but we shouldn't be too surprised. Certain chickens are coming home to roost, now. We could never piggyback on the efforts of foreign associations for ever. Decades of FAI negligence are coming back back to bite us in a big way, and this was always going to happen eventually.

Hardly "chickens coming home to roost" though, is it? Cillian Sheridan has been our only CL representative over the past few years, and he's never even been included in one of MON's squad! That pretty much sums up the usefulness of the stat. At the end of the day, I'd much rather have our guys playing for middling teams in the most competitive league in the world, rather than some 2nd rate backwater just so we can say that we have a few "CL players"..

Lithuania, Andorra, Faroes, San Marino, Gibraltar, Latvia, Liechtenstein, and Moldova.

That is the company we're keeping in terms of standard of player these days. This doesn't tell entirely the whole story, I'll grant you, but it doesn't look good. It can hardly be spun as a positive, can it?

Well it can, with some nuance. We're probably unique in Europe in that 1)We have a weak domestic league; and 2)All of our best players are fed into the richest, most competitive league in the world.

When you consider those two vital points, it makes sense that we will always have a limited presence in the EL/CL. If we had a standard European dynamic (ie a domestic league that often qualifies at least 1 side for either the EL or CL; and a more even spread of our players across different European leagues), then we would have a much greater representation in those competitions. That wouldn't really make our players any better though, they'd simply be moving their "Premier League averageness" to a weaker league where they stand out.

Quote The Republic of Ireland could have their 4th season in a row with no players starting a Champions League match. Prior to this there were just 3 in 3 seasons: Cillian Sheridan (Apollon Limassol) Anthony Stokes (Celtic) Aiden McGeady (Spartak Moscow) So, that is 3 in 7 seasons

Irish players don’t care about playing in Europe. They care about who will pay them the most wages for the minimum amount of effort required.

Most championship clubs would be paying better wages than a lot of Europa league, and even some Champions League teams.

A few weeks ago, I was asked on twitter if the number of Irish players has dropped across all four divisions in England. It took a little while to get the data together, and it's bad news. Apart from a short bump in numbers in the four seasons after Euro 2012, the numbers of players appearing in league football, it's been a consistent downward slide in participation since 2008-09.

You must look at the content of this as well and consider the amount of 'foreign' players playing for these clubs in the EPL and to a lesser extent the Championship.

I'd say English\Scottish and Welsh players would have a similar pattern.

Appearance data by nationality is available on premierleague.com
This is a comparison of appearances by Irish, Welsh and Scottish players across the last ten years

Would have thought there was going to be more Welsh players with one/both of Cardiff and Swansea in the division every season

Yup. Given, Duff, O'Shea and Keane in their pomp, with Kilbane, Finnan,  Reid, Doyle, and a young Whelan and McGeady to call upon, amongst others.

Trap's a bigger villain than O'Neill in many ways.

I've dug into the numbers for previous seasons, and they make Kerr's reign look worse IMO. across the four Premier League seasons during his tenure (the second half of the 2002/03 season, 2003/04, 2004/05, and the first half of the 2005/06 season) featured 37, 34, 29, and 33 Irish players, respectively, and he still couldn't beat anyone ranked higher than 84th in a competitive game.

FWIW 37 is the most Irish players to appear in the PL in one season (2002/03)
