It's going to be strange in the new season with sky losing the tv rights for La Liga and Eleven Sports getting the gig.

Eleven have yet to announce how much their packages are going to be. Hopefully cheap enough initially at least anyway

They're announced.

The oddest fixture on the calendar is the Spanish Super Cup, to be played in Morocco.

Haven't they been playing the Italian Super Cup in different cities round the world in recent years?  It wouldn't really be that odd bearing that in mind.

Edit:  they have indeed played it abroad including USA, China, Qatar and even one time in Libya!  So the Spanish Super Cup in Morocco isn't really that odd in comparison. LOL

I'm predicting that the interest in the Spanish league is going to plummet in this part of the world with no games being shown on TV.

The first and last game of the Spanish season on TV last night. Barca won the Super Cup 2-1 against Sevilla. Stunning goal by Dembele 10 minutes from time to win it. I thought Dembele played quite well. Maybe he can make the breakthrough this season. Suarez was awful, his first touch was poor and he lost a lot of possession. I thought Barca's defence looked terrible and Ter-Stegen saved a penalty in the last couple of minutes.

Forgot this was on Sky until the last 5 minutes.

It would have been Pique and Lenglet's first competitive game together I think they'll improve as the season goes on

I'd say that Umtiti will replace Lenglet and Sergio Roberto will come in for Semedo next week.

It was only one game this year compared to the usual 2 legs and Sevilla were only willing to play it as a one off if it was at their ground. Tangier was the compromise and I'm sure they got well compensated for the game as well.

Presumably the alternative was Madrid... and Tangier is not that far from Sevilla.

It's a 2h30m drive from Sevilla to the port of Tarifa, then one hour on the fast ferry from there to Tangiers. You could probably do centre to centre in about four and a bit hours.

The league have announced they’re going to play a round of games in the US, possibly starting this season

Posted By: Roberto Baggio
Date Posted: 16 Aug 2018 at 11:22am
So not only did they have their supercup overseas in Morocco of all places, La Liga are now going to be having regular league games held in the US.

There'd be quite a bit of criticism if and when the EPL decide to make this move. I await everybody's favourite league coming in for the same.

I think that’s a smart move by them to get in there first.
That’s a big market to crack.

The locals fans lose out not that the money men will care.

The Italians have been playing their charity shield cups abroad for years.

I'm not. I just found it funny that there was no criticism of La Liga going to play their equivalent of the charity shield overseas, we'd have several pages on the EPL thread if they'd done the same.
Agree on your point re football commercializing itself to death (I even spelt that word the American way as well)

Well there is way more interest in the EPL rather than La Liga on here so that would partially explain why there was less fuss. Anyway, modern football in general is very annoying and this gimmick hopefully is a huge flop.

Even more money to end up in Barca/Real/Atletico pockets.

They're hardly going to be playing Getafe v Villareal over there. A few smaller clubs might benefit, but the majority of commercial revenue will end up in the same pockets as usual.

I assumed it was a full gameweek? All 20 teams would get a game in the US of A if that's the case.

It's one off games. Similar to the NFL matches in Europe etc. So only the usuals will benefit.

It will be the same model as the NFL - play a few games abroad rather than a full game week.
It would have to be one of the big teams (top 3 probably) against one of the bottom teams.

You’d imagine the local fans would not stand for Barca v Real being played in Miami or NY.

Yeah maybe for now. Once some goon in a suit finds an algorithm that suggests playing Classicos on Mars to corner the intergalactic market then you watch them board the space shuttle.
I've been to Barca a few times and, like most big clubs, their decision makers love us football tourists. We arrive in, pay way over the odds for a ticket, spend a fortune in the club shop, take loads of photo's to help boost their brand and fook off home without causing any hassle. Not like stingy potentially bothersome local fans with their noise and ideas about the welfare of the club. They even pack their own sandwiches some of them!
It's all fooked. Thank God for St Pats and our total lack of gentrification. Or fans. Or facilities. Still though, it beats all the modern corporate bollox.

There's enough clubs in LaLiga with rubbish attendances to entice a few of them to Ameirca for a big money spinner. Won't be the big teams

If this was Barca v Betis in Dublin nobody would give a crap about Pedro who has a season ticket for Betis but won’t get to see them v Barcelona as his club sold out the fans for a few million euro’s by playing in Dublin.

There would be some panic over tickets.

Real/Barca/Atletico are the power 3 in Spain, all sell out their stadium each week with huge attendances and viewing figures. Can't see them giving up a home game.

Any of those teams away games will be the biggest 3 attendances of that team's season, so those teams would kick up a fuss too.

My guess is it'll be a home game of Deportivo, Malaga, Sociadad, with Bilbao, Valencia, Betis as the away team

The big 3 won’t give up a home game but they won’t have a problem playing one of the smaller teams away in a different country.

The smaller team will get a big pay day so it will suit them as well.

The real losers are the local fans of the smaller team. The owners will say the extra revenue justifies it.

Ha, shows the amount of attention I pay to La Liga. I was looking at the attendance figures, was looking for teams that get about 20k attendances, they'd want teams that have a name, but not so big a following that they'd never pass up a home game

I'm convinced he's a worse ***t than Blatter ever was. Sepp was really only in it for himself, but because he had all the power, he was able to dictate to the corporates to some extent, and he had some little bit of sense of football history. Not voting for a WC in Qatar for example.

Platini & Infantino couldn't wait to sell out to the corporates & will happily mess about with every single league or tournament to keep them happy, with even less regard for fans than Blatter had. Sepp told the corporates what to do (and made sure they passed him some envelopes while on their way to doing it) but the corporates are dictating to the new FIFA/UEFA breed what to do.

Might start a petition to get Sepp reinstated, he was a football man like us, and in comparison to these jokers, a man of the people.

Was at Barcelona v Alaves tonight . They parked the bus from minutes one . Dembele looks like has loads of Potential but still a bit raw . Ter Stegan and nothing to two but chipping the on rushing striker was a highlight the game. And well Messi , they don’t call him the GOAT for no reason two class goals and a free kick off the cross bar .

Fair play to the players, they will probably be talked out of it with a cut of the profits but, for now, they are doing the right thing.

SD Huesca Clap

Smallest team to ever play in La Liga. Win their opening game against Eibar, 2-0 down away to Athletico and brings it back to 2-2 with 1 of the best volleys you'll ever see.

The real losers are the local fans of the smaller team. The owners will say the extra revenue justifies it.

Girona v Barcelona in Miami end of Jan.

Girona season tickets can either get 40% discount on season ticket or flights and accommodation for the match.

This could be a historic match.

Read the other day that Pique and Busquets will refuse to play in this game, I hope some other players join them. Some coincidence that two Pro Catalan teams are involved.

The whole situation is farcical.

I see Silva is on fire for Sevilla after his horror time at Milan. Could be a sneaky bet for La Liga top scorer, surely big odds. Would be the first time in over a decade that a Barca or Real player wasn't top scorer I'd imagine if he did it. Suarez probably the only one to break the Messi Ronaldo monopoly in the past decade? Times they are a changin.

Knew Forlan won it, once or twice? Thoughts that was a few years before 08 though. Guiza, jaysus, forgot he existed. Did Spain use him in the 08 Euros? Thought he was very average player, could have the wrong fella altogether now!

Scored against Greece in the group and Russia in the semis.
Missed a peno in the shootout with Italy.

Scored against Greece in a 2-1 win when they'd already qualified for the knockouts. They had the second string out that night. Think some randomer like De La Red scored the other.

Yep, he is a Valencia fan.

Speaking of Valencia, defensively they were superb tonight, Kondogbia, Garay and Piccini in particular. Guedes going off so early robbed them of attacking quality, but Barca rarely created any real clear cut chances. I had to mute my stream after about 5 minutes, Graham Hunter and some other gobsh*te commentating constantly saying "Football Club Barcelona" every time they were in possession Dead

Looking like Eleven Sports are going to cease UK operations. Even though I subscribe to them, I’ll be delighted if it’s true. I hate streaming matches. Hopefully Sky or BT will snap up the Spanish and Italian rights if it folds.

Eleven Sports is trying to renegotiate its TV sports rights in the UK to online-only streaming deals.

Having won the rights to show La Liga and Serie A games earlier this year, the company was hoping to sub-licence the rights to broadcasting companies such as Sky, BT Sport and Virgin Media.

But a failure to strike a deal has led to the streaming platform to look again at its rights deals.

Clear foul on the keeper for Suarez’s goal tonight, but somehow the ref doesn’t give it even after checking on VAR. I’m in favour of using the system, but if referees are just going to ignore it, it’s pretty pointless
