Question:  The draw was fixed so England were only designated on Sardinia to control the fans on an island?

Also England played all their games in Cagliari. The Dutch had to move around like us.  The top seeds normally play all their games in the one venue. Surely the Dutch were the top seeds in the group eseing as they were European Champions?

England were the seeded team IIRC

England were seeded, I'm not sure exactly how the seeding was done. As the Dutch won a UEFA tournament I doubt it was part of the consideration.

How the hell were England seeded above Holland?  England lost all their games in Euro 88 and barely qualified for Italia 90

"The seeds were decided by FIFA based on the nations' performance in, primarily, the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1986_FIFA_World_Cup" rel="nofollow - 1986 World Cup with the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1982_FIFA_World_Cup" rel="nofollow - 1982 World Cup also considered as a secondary influence. Six of the final eight in 1986 had qualified for the 1990 tournament, the missing nations being Mexico (quarter-final in 1986) and France (third place). Italy – who were seeded first as hosts – had not reached the final eight in 1986 and this left FIFA needing to exclude one of the three (qualified) nations who were eliminated in the 1986 quarter-finals: Brazil, England or Spain."

Says wikipedia.

Euro '88 would have had no influence. The Dutch failing to qualify in '86 would have been more relevant.

Little known fact:  Toto Schilacci had never played for Italy before Italia 90, not even in a friendly.  He only ever scored 1 more goal for Italy after Italia 90

He played against the Swiss in a warm up match in March 1990.

He had never played in a competitive game before the World Cup.

According to Schillaci himself he never played a friendly.  Maybe he was on the bench for that game?
