An amazing result for Coleraine in Serbia last night, getting a 1-1 draw. The home side only equalised with a 96th minute penalty.

Could Cork get Sevco in the third round qualifying?

Is the draw seeded?

Cork can only play CL drop outs

yes its still seeded, they are likely to be the team with the lowest coefficient in that section of the draw

Lovely bit of match fixing last night.

Home team who were 7-3 up on aggregate, at 3-2 up on the night at home in the 92nd minute are 4/5 to win the game, 11/10 for the draw.

That is great and it really gives them a chance, albeit the Greeks will still be favourites. I just saw that Whittaker, who I believe was having a terrible game, went off to cheers at 2-0 down!

A few other interesting results around tonight...

Valur, who were unlucky not to beat Rosenborg in the CL, lost away to Santa Coloma . Santa Coloma dropped out of the CL themselves after losing in the preliminary round.

Cillian Sheridan played as Jagiellonia won 1-0 against Rio Ave of Portugal.

Derry's conquerors Dinamo Minsk won 3-1 away in Slovakia, whose league champions beat a certain Legia in the CL last night,  albeit in a town with a Hungarian ethnic majority, which I'm sure will cause a few more people to say 'what if' unnecessarily.

I think until they change the games in this tournament to Tuesday/Wednesday like CL teams aren't going to take it fully seriously

Also feel the drop down from the CL should be done away with.

The qualification for next seasons CL was a good though and once teams get out of the group stage and to the 1/4s they start to take it seriously.

If I was a UEFA delegate I'd suggest a whole overhaul of both competitions.

The Champions League should be just that Champions
League Winners and Cup winners (Where a country has two cups i.e. England either whichever one is ranked higher as per UEFA grade or a playoff between the two FA Cup and League Cup winners.

The Europa League can then be the teams who finish 2,3,4,5 and perhaps the runner up of above playoff per country.

Of course no clubs would agree to this due to the massive money a club can make in CL.

Less teams in both is required... the bottom team in each group add nothing to the competition.

Maybe add a third tier.

A teams play on Wed
B teams on Tues
C teams on Thur

UEFA Cup (League Runners up, league cup winners etc)
Champions League being just that
Cup Winners Cup being brought back

Won't happen though

Then the tournament would be absolutely sh*te as a result.

The gulf in money between the elite leagues compared to the second and third tier leagues is absolutely massive, without the odd exception the majority can no longer compete.

A group containing Juventus, BATE Borisov, HJK Helsinki and Sparta Prague really wouldn't set the pulse racing would it?

(Just using those teams as a random example btw)

PSV Eindhoven

Pot 2

AEK Athens

Red Bull Salzburg

Dinamo Zagreb

Midtjylland

Pot 3

CFR Cluj

It would also include National Cup winners too and would still adhere to the UEFA co-efficients

Last season for example
TOP 6 leagues winners in Europe + CL and EL winner (pot 1)
Spain- Barcelona
England- Man City
Italy- Juventus
Germany- Bayern
France-PSG
Russia- lokomotiv
CL- Real
EL- Atletico

TOP 6 Cup winners in Europe + L winners of 7 & 8 co-efficient (pot 2)
Spain- Sevilla * runners up
England- Chelsea (FA Cup)
Italy-AC Milan *Runner ups
Germany-Frankfurt
France- Monaco- League cup runner up
Russia- FC Tosno (not sure who they are but they won the Russian Cup)
Portugal L- Porto
Ukraine L-Shakthar

Pot 3.

League Belgium- Club Brugge
League Turkey- Galatasaray
League Austria- RB Salzburg
League Denmark- FC Midtjylland
League- Netherlands - PSV
League-Greece- AEK
League- Croatia- Dinamo Zagreb
League-Czech R- Viktoria Plzen

Pot 4.
Rest of the Qualifiers
Let's say
Celtic
Young Boys
Cluj
BATE
Legia
Red Star
Malmo
Rosenburg

So in theory yes you could get a group with
lokomotiv,Frankfurt,AEK,BATE
hardly then most thrilling but you could get a group of
Real-Chelsea -PSV- Celtic

Sean Dyche seemed very upbeat for a manager after last nights game. He looked like a man who wasn't that bothered that they were beaten. Only saw first 10 minutes of the game and Burnley were creating chances so how did the game go and why was he so laid back after the game.

Whats the story with the betting in the battle of the red bulls tonight?
Salzburg are 13/5 despite winning all their games so far and beating Leipzig away?

Granted, the opposition were poor enough, but some of the Arsenal youngsters were excellent last night.

Were getting caught on the counter towards the end of the half and no surprise that they've conceded with basically the last kick of the half, 75% possession and go in 1-0 down. Poor defending from Kolasinac from the free, and he's been wasteful at times around the Bate box. Ref making some bizarre decisions.

Few interesting bits of information about the 2 sides.

Bate's whole squad cost 200k.

They've only spent 11.5 million in their entire history.

Hadn't played a competitive game in 2 months.

Had never won a knockout European tie before last night.

Only Arsenal.

Arsenal Fans: This totally unacceptable... the result will be a huge number of empty seats

Simple solution: Half the number of fans = half the number of stewards, so close two of the stands completely. Wink

I think Bate will need to get an away goal to have any chance tonight. Cannot see Arsenal not getting at least the two goals required to go through.

3-0 Arsenal.

Not inconceivable that BATE could score at least one, they've had decent chances in both halves now. Arsenal seem to be overly focused on getting to the end line and getting crosses in, but BATE have that many players defending in their box, that it's not that effective.

Koscielny going off which is a concern. Mkhitaryan is frustrating to watch, shows glimpses of being a good player but his final ball can be disappointing.

Emery will put out a strong team even if a few of the regulars are rotated. one of lacazette or aub will likely start but not both along with ozil, cech in goal, torreira in midfield etc. etc.

Rennes may be in poor form but they have demonstrated a capability to get results against difficult opposition this season. Emery won't take them lightly and will know what he is up against from his time at PSG.

EDIT: I completely forgot Lacazette is suspended. Auba will start.

As expected a strong team with a few tweaks........

                    Cech

Mustafi  Koscielny  Sokratis  Monreal

              Torreira  Xhaka

    Mkhitaryan    Ozil       Iwobi;

                  Aubameyang

Subs: Leno, Kolasinac, Maitland-Niles, Guendouzi, Suarez, Ramsey, Nketiah.

Great seeing Koscielny and Sokratis line up together. If they can stay fit they will form a formidable partnership.
