I think they decide when most games are played already.

Greed has won, big finance has won. Whatever small role elite clubs still play in the local communities from which they grew is dwarfed now by their position as global brands.

It's a strange one. I don't see him being a starter but if there is 1 position up for grabs in the attack on their team it's on the right side.

It’s a squad game more than ever
Good signing
It was widely reported that Pep only wanted two players this summers, a winger/forward which he has now got and cover for Fernandinho, supposed to be Jorginho but looks like he’s set for Chelsea with Sarri now

IMO he adds depth to the squad but that’s it.
He doesn’t improve the XI.

If City want to win the Champions league they need to buy better than Mahrez.

I expect Sterling to be used more centrally. Mahrez is a better wide player than Bernardo Silva who played a lot of games last season.

He has got great goals/assists stats for Leicester and a league title and player of the year award under his belt.

The best thing about the World Cup was the fact there was no talk of silly transfer fees or complete and utter biased for certain teams.
It was just enjoyment of the game.

I don’t think Pogba transfer fee was mentioned once which must be some kind of record!

KOK hasn’t been around with the usual:
The whole spurs squad will leave if they dont win the league cup
The whole Liverpool squad will leave if they don’t win the league cup
Repeat, repeat

It was good while it lasted! Clap

That’s an eye watering figure, especially as the rise is really based on a few games at the World Cup. If he had been sold in May it would have been less than half the figure that is being quoted.

If van Dijk is worth £75m, Maguire is worth over £50m, given that he's a few years younger.

I really like Maguire the way he plays. He loves taking the ball out but you can tell he has no skill on the ball.

Against the better teams he would be torn a new one as he is slow. Sure he has to carry that giant nut around!

Apparently they got 3 weeks off after the WC so he only arrives back on the Monday before the EPL starts.

But these days the top players keep themselves fit on holidays.
They don’t drink 12 pints a day on their days off anymore.
They are more likely to be in the gym twice a day.

I’m sure they’ll all be playing that first weekend. The EPL starts slowly IMO. They should have 3 fixtures over the first 9 days to get into it.

Lolz.

In fairness though I'd imagine £60m of that is for his disturbingly large head - freak show stuff. £5m or so is for the actual defender attributes.

Maguire is just a slightly improved Jones, albeit younger & minus the gurning.
He’s nowhere near the player VVD is.
United’s transfer list/strategy is very questionable

Bayern are going for 7 in a row and are 1/8 to win the league

Juve are going for 8 in a row and are 4/9 to win the league

PSG have won 5 out of the last 6 and are 1/9 to win the league

The Spanish league is more mixed but Barca have won 7 out of the last 10.

Nobody has retained the EPL in the last 10 years.

If this transfer goes through at that price, it will be one of the most bizarre transfers of all time. I like Maguire myself, he plays very positively for a defender, but he's at exactly the level he should be at Leicester. He just isn't a decent enough step up on what's already there. If they sign him, they won't be able to move him off the books for years. The transfer and contract policy at the club in the last few years has been nothing short of desperate.

I think the Maguire story was put out as a smokescreen by United and Alderweireld is their real target

I see he is 8/11 to be at United by close of the transfer window and 7/4 Spurs

There's no doubting though that City are as well placed as possible to do it. They will simply wipe the floor with nearly every cannon fodder team in the PL this season. So it's up to the other sides to do similar and drop very few points in those 20 or so fixtures against the bottom 10 or so sides. Liverpool look the only ones capable of anything near that at present. Spurs possibly, but hard to see them being as consistent.

I could see Liverpool hit close to 90 points and very possibly not win the PL title. The myth of the PL being a league where every team is capable of beating every other is well and truly bust at this point.

Very possibly. Hard to know why they don't just push on though if that deal is on the table. Is the haggling over a few million with Levy really worth a player of that quality coming in so late in the pre season? The difference in quality between Alderweireld and Maguire is absolutely massive.

Been reading a piece by journo Colin Young predicting positions teams will finish in the EPL this season.

He has WHU to finish eighth and Fulham to finish ninth.

I know West Ham have spent a lot of money but I'd be surprised if they finished eighth and who have Fulham bought to make that predection?

I know West Ham have spent a lot of money but I'd be surprised if they finished eighth and who have Fulham bought to make that predection?

It's actually hard to look beyond the recent Top 7 to take those places. That of course will depend on how Everton gel and if Puel and Leicester can bed down.

Beyond that I wouldn't rule out West Ham coming in eighth. Competition will come from Wolves, Fulham, Palace and Burnley (provided they keep going for that slot). Wolves and Fulham were PL teams in all but name last term. Fulham have done well in their summer dealings, as have Wolves. Palace have had a quiet summer, but have a decent squad and an experienced manager.

I don't feel Southampton have improved sufficiently to avoid being dragged into a relegation battle, the culture at Newcastle will make it hard to sustain last season's efforts, and I think Huddersfield and Brighton will find it tougher second year around. Cardiff have cut their cloth to suit their measure, but that may not be enough. It's hard to tell with Bournemouth, but this is the fourth PL season and have rarely looked in difficulty.

For fantasy football purposes-

Will the EPL teams really rest the WC players who made the semifinals??
FF scout reckon spurs won’t play Kane, Trippier etc.

I know it's late but I'd guess Kane could well start, and Trippier be rested.

Not having it for a second. Until I see the video of him balls deep in his jack Russell, I can only put it down to wicked internet rumours.

A wotw in progress. A lot of mistakes, particularly in defence, but nevertheless a lot of positives to take from the first two matches.

West Ham play Man U, Chelsea and Arsenal in their next 5 matches.
The other two games are Everton and Wolves.

After spending so much the expectations are high.

over 1000 Watford fans there.

game moved at short notice due to Burnley progressing in Europa League and early start on a Sunday for those starting out from down south. I don't think that is that bad all told

Wouldn't have been a factor, was well known Burnley were playing in the Europa League.

Perhaps not the ideal thread for this, but I just came across The All-Time Top Flight Table -

https://www.theguardian.com/football/datablog/2013/apr/17/football-league-125-years#data" rel="nofollow - https://www.theguardian.com/football/datablog/2013/apr/17/football-league-125-years#data

Up to April 2013 and it relates to all sides that have been in the old Div 1 or Premiership and to the games played in them.

There are a couple of clubs, I never heard of before!

The points system is as it was at the time so 2-1-0 when that was relevant and 3-1-0 thereafter!
Interestingly, it was originally planned to have The English League as points only to game winners and nothing for a draw!

Even though it's 2013, my Beloved Liverpool would still be on top today as the 70 or so points gap would not have been bridged in the following 5 years, indeed it probably got bigger!Big smile

Enjoy!

Wolves fully deserved their point there, well coached and set up. They had a lot of joy in turning the ball over midway into their own half by getting numbers in around Fernandinho, Silva and Gundogan and hitting them on the counter with Kompany a bit shaky at times.
Compare that to how Arsenal played against City who didn’t lay a glove on them and basically rolled over and had their bellies tickled.
Got lucky with the goal of course as it went in off Bolys arm, but City were a bit off throughout the game. Rui Patricio looks a great signing, and Doherty was solid. He looks like he could play on the right side of a back 3.

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2018/08/26/jurgen-klopp-appoints-throw-in-coach-liverpool/" rel="nofollow - https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2018/08/26/jurgen-klopp-appoints-throw-in-coach-liverpool/

It’s a story about Liverpool hiring a throw in coach.

At first it sounds ridiculous but given what’s at stake and the amount they are spending on players I think clubs should be spending way more on coaching.
Every little improvement helps.

All Premiership teams should have a proper goalkeeper coaching team.
Not just a previous GK they had at the club 10/20 years ago. It should be a team of coaches and should regulary use ‘consultants’ with state of the art technology.

Same with the defence, midfield, attacker etc

Why would top 6 teams not hire somebody like Tony Pulis when he was available to work on their defence. If you pay them enough, they will come!

I think too many clubs are using previous players instead of looking abroad to learn from other countries.
