I actually had a fiver double on Faugheen and Sizing John last night : Pays over £350.
I do realise that there are question marks over both but neither seem to have something concrete wrong with them so happy to take a small chance that they make it to March.

What races did ya pick them in?

I like a few anti-post bets if they don't show up for whatever reason, just hate when they end up romping home in some other race that week

Champion Hurdle and Gold Cup - it'll be those races or nothing for both of those.

good article here about bounce factor, and specifically at the high rated horse returning to action with the 2nd race (at Cheltenham) being within 40 days of the first. Altior and Native River are looked at in this instance. This article was written before both of them raced in Newbury on Saturday, Altior winning by 4l and Native River by 12l

Yeah, I think they changed it last year. I would imagine most firms are NRNB at this stage, so you could take a chance

Also, Skybet are doing money back on all losers in the first race of each day for bets up to 20 quid again

RSA is a very loose race, though it has produced a decent bet for the following years gold cup. might bite winning last year and currently fav for GC. I know presenting percy won on good ground in the pertemps last year, but reckon the horse is better suited to heavier ground. RSA pace tends to be quite high, and if the ground is quick then it might be a bit too quick. should be a top race though.

Monalee is a tough horse, and Black Corton has been winning regularly since last Summer, so will be a good race hopefully

Footpad is drifting a bit today for some reason. Still a very short price, but you can get 13/8 which is pretty good considering he was evens before today

I have a feeling he’ll be around 2/1 on the day, and if he is he’ll be worth a good bet. But at current prices I don’t think so

Was at the Belfast one last night.
Usual panel - Gordon Elliott, David Casey, The Couch Winstanley, Richard Hoiles, Gary O'Brien, Neil Mulholland and a couple of bookies.

I'll try to keep my summary as brief as possible.

Supreme Novices - Casey said Getabird has a very good chance but thought it was short enough at 5/4 or 6/4. Most others said to avoid the favourite and that it was very short just because it was the big Irish hope and Willie Mullins in the first. There were no real serious tips here.

Arkle - Casey very happy with Footpad, seemed more confident on it than Getabird. Couch said Petit Mouchoir jumped the first two very badly last time out and won't get away with that here. Saint Calvados not in the same class was the general consensus.

Champion Hurdle - Buveur's to lose. Words for Elgin in the betting without the favourite. Also My Tent Or Yours each way. Casey didn't seem to have a clue if Yorkhill would go here or the Ryanair. He also seemed to have no clue which Faugheen would turn up and its just wait and see.

Ballymore Novices - Samcro won't be beaten

RSA - the English panellists all liked Presenting Percy while Casey and Mulholland give Black Corton a big chance. General consensus that the last day would have taken its toll on Monalee

Champion Chase - Altior the one to beat, none of the panel were keen on Min. If Douvan had had a prep run and won it would be 6/4 and is the real danger to the favourite they thought, but its very doubtful it'll run

Bumper - Elliott gave a good shout out to his only runner in the race Felix Desjy. Good words for the top 5 in the market from the other panellists with nothing really concrete

Stayers Hurdle - very open race. Bacardys tipped up with Couch mocking Sam Spinners chances due to the jockey. The bookies will take on the top 3 in the betting they say and offered 5/1 on Supasundae today in their shops. Hoiles reckons La Bague Au Roi has a chance.

Triumph - Couch & Mulholland thought Apples Shakira is a good thing having won 3 times already at Cheltenham. The Bookies want to take it on. Casey said Stormy Ireland is a small horse but is very powerful, won its first start this season by 50 odd lengths but the opposition weren't up to much and hasn't ran since. More or less said it could be anything. Elliot thinks Farclas can reverse form with Mr Adjudicator. Casey gave Sayo a mention each way at 25s

Gold Cup - Couch and Hoiles bullish about Might Bite. The rest of the opposition is poor Couch thinks.
Kilultagh Vic got a good few mentions while Total Recall could get a place Mulholland thinks
They're trying headgear with Djakadam to see if it makes a difference.

Other tips -
They more or less all thought Un De Sceaux would be the nap of the meeting and is a good price at 9/4
Laurina will definitely win Casey said, though will be short odds.
Elliott likes the chances of Cause of Causes, De Plotting Shed and Dounikos
Other tips I remember off the top of my head - Project Bluebook, Bouvereil, Long House Hall, Storyteller, Rathvinden in the 4 miler

If the ground doesn't dry out by Tuesday, it might be worth putting a couple of quid each way on Yala Enki in the Ultima. He absolutely hammered Blaklion, who is one of the favs for the Grand National, on heavy ground there last month, so the conditions could work in his favour next week.

I still haven't backed one horse ante post for Cheltenham.

I'm getting a lot of joy backing in the football lately so have been trying to stay away from backing horses so I suppose that's the main reason.

Apples Jade and Buveur DAir double (extremely boring selection) is probably the one decent bet I'll have Tuesday, I'll probably be kicking myself that I didn't hammer Footpad or Getabird if/when either or both romp home but that's the joys of gambling, no point giving out after the event.

In saying that when the rush hits and you're nearing the off in the first few races, it's hard to not get involved.

Didn't get a chance to go to the one in D2 but watched a few over the weekend and put this together. Probably too much but Hey!

13:30 – Supreme Novices Hurdle

Felt it isn’t the strongest of races and Getabird is the worst priced favourite

Getabird, very little experience, has only won when running right handed and is unknown how he will handle left side. Feels that the softer the ground the better

Kalashnikov – Has the strongest form going in and was described as a monster.

Sharjah – Bad form going into the race but good talent, if gets it right won’t be stopped getting into the places

E/W Chances

Summerhill Boy

Paloma Blue

Claimantakinforgan

Identity Thief

Melon

14:10 – Arkle Challenge

Feels will be a very face race that will go at a good gallop

Footpad – Feel is too short a price but is an exceptional jumper

Petit Mouchoir – Good horse but tends to hit a lot if fences when jumping

Saint Calvados – Reduced field hampers e/w shot but soft ground may push into top 2

Brain Power – New jockey on board and will get a better ride. Has the most ability and wind op will help

14:50 – Ultima Handicap

No previews – Horses mentioned

Coo Star Sivola

Gold Present

Singlefarmpayment]

15:30 – Champion Hurdle

Recommended Bet W/O Favourite. Mentioned that there was a rumour of something going on in Willie Mullins yard at Christmas which resulted in poor results

Buveur Air – Probable winner across the board, mentioned as unbeatable

Wicklow Brave –Good e/w chance, bet without favourite

Faugheen – good horse but possibly too old and not the same as past. Ricci stated that was showing signs of getting the spark back

My Tent or Yours – Loves Cheltenham and is expected to run it’s same solid race

Yorkhill – Showing signs of disinterest in training. No faith in the horse

16:10 – Mares Hurdle

Apples Jade – Only negative is no run since Christmas, prefers dry ground but will be very hard to beat

Benie Des Dieux – Will run a good race but might not have enough to challenge Jade

E/W Chance – Gers Girl

16:50 – National Hunt Challenge

No preview of race – Horses mentioned

Jury Duty

Duel At Dawn

17:30 – Close Brothers Novice

No preview of race – Horses mentioned

Any Second Now

Testify

Barney Dwan

Da Plotting Shed

Wednesday 14th March

13:30 – Ballymore Novices Hurdle

Samcro – Felt to be the best young horse in either England or Ireland, the real deal and future Gold Cup winner

Black Op – Feels a very good horse but needs good ground, good e/w shot

On The Blindside – Worries about how will handle the home straight of Cheltenham

Next Destination – Feels will be two short a price to warrant a bet

14:10 – RSA Insurance Novices Chase

Felt it was a wide open race

Presenting Percy – has been oddly campaigned on the run up to Cheltenham. Has great natural ability, likes the heavier ground

Black Corton – Felt overpriced, stated route to Cheltenham in the summer and has been getting better

Monalee – Unsure if will go here or JLT but will go close

EW Chances

Ballyoptic (Felt very overpriced)

If Ruby decides to ride Min, Douvan will not run. Douvan looks fit and ready. If runs has a great chance

Compare Altior to Sprinter Sacre, deserves to be favourite

Doesn’t  think that Min has much of a chance

Wide Open....Willie Mullins horse a likely winner

Benatar – Has some niggling issues going into the race

Testify – Decent form coming in, has been winning easily. Huge Price

Modus – Good jumper, quick over fences, think pretty sweet

Monalee – Great horse, would be crazy not to run as feels is easiest race to win

Finians Oscar – Possibly most talented horse in race but prefers hurdles to fences

14:10 – Pertemps

No preview of race – Horses mentioned

Louis Vac Pouch

Beer Googles

La Breuil

14:50 – Ryanair Chase

Un De Seaux– Expected to win the race again comfortably, soft ground suits, if good to soft could be troubled

Cue Card – Trip suits better than last outing 12 year old, too old

Balko De Flos – Biggest opposition for UDS

Sub Lieutenant - if runs has a great chance

15:30 – Stayers Hurdle

Wide open race

Supasundae – Not a strong finisher, concerns course and distance, better jumper than last time

Sam Spinner – Careful to mind, kink in temperament, possible superstar if stays focused. Will stay

Yanworth – Changing back back to hurdles

Penhill – Rumours Bloom is looking to book box for this day. Wouldn’t do it if didn’t think had a chance

YKWIMH – Expected to run better this time out, has every chance

15:30 – Gold Cup

Might Bite – A headbanger but best horse in the race. Rally soft does not suit and might struggle

Djackadam – On his day has a chance but might have had his day

Our Duke – Overpriced, is a mini Denman and if Robbie Power is on board worth a punt

Road to Riches – Big Step up but a previous winner at Festival – Needs good ground

Melon

Identity Thief and Melon won't be in this race. Melon ran in the SN last year and IT hasn't been a novice in years.

Aside from that, they've pretty much named the first 6 in the market there, so not telling us much.

I think this is a very hard race to call and a tricky opener

Willie Mullins bingo got the better of me with Max Dynamite. Word I got was that he was all set for the County Hurdle on Friday and now Willie has bluffed everyone and declared him for the Coral Cup. Lucky my antepost bet was NRNB.

Still fancy him for the Coral Cup mind you!

So the going is heavy, soft in places.
Suggests to me that a lot of outsiders are going to win this week and favourites turned over?
However on today's card Apples Jade, Footpad and Buveur Dair have all won in ground with a bit of give in it.

Any horses who favour the soft that are running this week?

favours irish horses, used to running in the heavy mud! can see punters acting on this, as the odds on getabird, footpad and apple's jade have shortened

jer's girl ew w/o fav in the mare hurdle

Boyles are doing an offer, money back as a free bet if 2nd or third to the favourite. Max 20 quid but go to a few boyles or I've never had any hassle with these offers if you just do a few and collect the free bet at different times.
I think petit mouchoir is way way way over-priced in the arkle. Footpad has been mighty impressive over fences, whilst he had beatn nothing up until he beat this selection last time out by a comfortable 5 lengths. That was petit mouchoirs first run in 4 months and he would have been nowhere near 100%, he was very tenderly handled by Davy with today in mind. They faced each other in the champion last year with petit mouchoir beating footpad by 3 lengths. He will improve tons for his last run and hopefully he can do the business. He's 4/1, and i've had a decent cut with boyles special offer.

Just my own picks. Think the main favourites will be hard beat and have them in a few L15's so made a few e/w selections too

1:30 Summerville Boy e/w
2:50 Vintage Cloulds e/w
3:30 Elgin e/w
4:10 Jers Girl e/w
4:50 Jury Duty or Mossback
5:30 Le Rocher e/w

SkyBet paying 6 places in the last and money back if you lose as a free bet up to 20e in the first

What a horse Footpad is. The 2 frontrunners probably went off to quickly with the ground as it is, but he was almost flawless

Couldn't believe the pace they were going at it down the back straight the front 2. Ruby sat motionless with a superstar below him and picked them off readily.

as ruby said prior to the arkle, when horse set off at a quick pace, there are no real tactics in play. tactics only come into play when it's a slower race and all runners are bunched. he kept footpad within reaching distance, and let the two front-runners tire out. very impressive performance, and would like to see what the finishing time was. reckon it was a very quick time!

Now not into horse racing but what really gets me is that I know 3 lads who have taken the week off work to watch the racing  down the pub in Galway . Wacko

First up no racing on Monday so why take the day off ?

First race is something like 1.30pm so why not work in the morning ?

And lastly the 3 guys I know work in the same plant they know everything about racing and they are as poor as I am .

If Samcro and Altior win I'm pretty much covered for the week, so praying there are no shocks there. A Presenting Percy win will be a nice little earner, but I'm getting nervous about how the RSA will actually play out. Nube Negra in the Fred Winter and Le Breuil in the Coral Cup for the each way bets then today, maybe Auvergnat in the Cross Country thrown in as well

ladies day a notorious day for punters to start losing their way! invariably Tuesday the punter wins, but Wednesday the bookies take over.

think it could be a good day for gigginstown. reckon they could take the opening two races, samcro should be a cert, and I reckon dounikos could have a good race (as long as jack kennedy has put yesterdays sh*te behind him). RSA is a difficult race, but will be interesting to see presenting percy. some already have him backed for 2019 GC

champion chase will hopefully be a cracker. special tiara to set the pace. wonder if altior will suffer from any bounce after his return race last day out. tends to be a trend that top rated horses, when on return their second race being at the festival and inside 40 days, have struggled. normally raced on good, good to soft ground, so the heavy ground might affect him. reckon it'll be a winner outside the top2 on the betting

Posted By: FrankosHereNow
Date Posted: 14 Mar 2018 at 11:15am
I think last year on the "things that annoy the fook out of you" thread somebody was giving out about people only going into the bookies during Cheltenham and that you wouldn't see them there for another year.
