Subject: Areas of Dublin that produce senior internationals

Dublin has pretty much always produced the backbone of the senior international team.

But which areas of Dublin have produced the most players? I'd like to get a list going on this, if possible.

Off the top of my head (please correct any inaccuracies):

Robbie Keane - Tallaght
Damien Duff - Rathfarnham/Ballyboden
Johnny Giles - Ormond Square (off the North Quays)
Ronnie Whelan - Finglas
Frank Stapleton - Artane (I think?)
Richard Dunne - Tallaght
Kenny Cunningham - Coolock
Liam Brady - Whitehall or surrounds (infamously went to St. Aidan's CBS there anyway)
Niall Quinn - Perrystown
Jeff Kenna - Palmerstown
Keith Andrews - I think I read he went to Ard Scoil Ris in Marino, so somewhere up that direction?
Darren O'Dea - went to St. Benildus College in Kilmacud, I think?
Anthony Stokes - Lucan
Paul McGrath  grew up in an orphanage out Sallynoggin/Monkstown direction

What about the current players?
Robbie Brady - Baldoyle
Jeff Hendrick is Northside too, I think?
Darren Randolph - Bray (greater Dublin area)

Others?

David O'Leary was Finglas too, I think?

Kevin Moran was Drimnagh and went to both James's Street CBS and Drimnagh Castle.

Be interesting to see what schools have produced the most internationals, too.

Stokes was Terenure College.

Could do up an all-time Northside v Southside list at the end of all this.

Wasn't Mark Kennedy from out around Blanchardstown or one of those surrounding areas?

A few others I don't know:
Stephen Carr
Stephen Kelly
Andy Keogh

Few from yesteryear:
Liam O'Brien
John Anderson
Dave Langan

Paddy Mulligan is a Dub but has always identified with Galway due to parentage.

Thanks.

Jeff Kenna grew up down the same road from me in Palmerstown. His younger brother Warren was in my primary school class in Chapelizod National School up to the end of fourth class in 1990 and Jeff used to come in the odd time to talk to the class about what it was like tying to make it as a professional footballer. The family left to go over to Southampton in 1990 from what I remember.

Greed has won, big finance has won. Whatever small role elite clubs still play in the local communities from which they grew is dwarfed now by their position as global brands.

61 goals in 125 games for Aberdeen is a decent haul. You'd think he'd have been worth a look.

Thumbs Up

Eamonn Fagan and Peter Eccles both only got 1 cap, but that means they fully qualify without having to resort to any murky criteria Smile. That takes Cabra up to 7 full internationals (with possibly others?). Could be hard to beat?

Dont really see the point of the thread to be honest. Would be more relevant to see what clubs players played for or what school they went to.  that said, I'm from Santry. St Kevins Boys territory. I dont know of any Santry Internationals though, despite  St Kevins providing numerous players.  Liam brady is probably the closest to my gaff, he was from Whitehall/Ellenfield

Off the top of my head (please correct any inaccuracies):

Robbie Keane - Tallaght
Damien Duff - Rathfarnham/Ballyboden
Johnny Giles - Ormond Square (off the North Quays)
Ronnie Whelan - Finglas
Frank Stapleton - Artane (I think?)
Richard Dunne - Tallaght
Kenny Cunningham - Coolock
Liam Brady - Whitehall or surrounds (infamously went to St. Aidan's CBS there anyway)
Niall Quinn - Perrystown
Jeff Kenna - Palmerstown
Keith Andrews - I think I read he went to Ard Scoil Ris in Marino, so somewhere up that direction?
Darren O'Dea - went to St. Benildus College in Kilmacud, I think?
Anthony Stokes - Lucan
Paul McGrath  grew up in an orphanage out Sallynoggin/Monkstown direction

What about the current players?
Robbie Brady - Baldoyle
Jeff Hendrick is Northside too, I think?
Darren Randolph - Bray (greater Dublin area)

Others?

Fairly sure himself and Judge went to Clonkeen.

I think John Anderson was from Kilbarrack.

Ashley Grimes is somewhere northside too.

@ DM - Brian Mooney is from Artane. I played ball with his brother for years.

Always have been curious what part of Dublin some of our homegrown players were from.

Can't believe Dalkey,Ballsbridge,Blackrock, Killiney weren't mentioned.

Shankill has been -pretty much Kiliney.

Perrystown, Terenure Southside

Perrystown is effectively a housing estate in the general Crumlin area (Dublin 12). I believe Niall Quinn himself refers to having grown up in Crumlin, when he doesn't use the name Perrystown.

not quite true, it effectively covers all areas from Crumlin cross to templeville road and was distinct from Crumlin as the houses were privately owned rather than corporation. Nice area to live

(I think Ashley Grimes was also from Cabra but I can't confirm it, does anyone know?)
Ash from Cabra West, same road as Daly. Also Jimmy Conway and Peter Eccles from Cabra West. There are more from Cabra going back over years. Ashley Grimes unique I think in that he won league cup and FA cup winners medals in both Ireland and England.

Thumbs Up

Eamonn Fagan and Peter Eccles both only got 1 cap, but that means they fully qualify without having to resort to any murky criteria Smile. That takes Cabra up to 7 full internationals (with possibly others?). Could be hard to beat?

Billy Newman another from Cabra got a cap, Gareth Farrelly also D7 (Navan Rd). Overall I'd say D11 has produced most.

I'm pretty certairn that kavanagh is from kilnamanagh tallaght. Unless he moved up this way later

Very good thread by the way. The premise is something you would probably laugh at but when you start matching players to areas it's very interesting and 'something you didn't know'
