South Shields playing at Darlo today in the FA Cup there will probably be more Sandies there than Darlo supporters.

Went to watch Cambridge City's replay against St. Albans tonight, largely as it was an excuse to go back to St. Ives! The town was lovely, the beer great and the football poor! The power cut was also  hilarious and the warm beer incredibly cheap! I couldn't work out if 'wot's he know?'s' son was on the pitch or bench, but that might be a good thing! Ian Allinson is a character though, for those  of you old enough to remember the name!

Wasn't it Ian Allinson when manager of Boreham Wood allowed the opposing team Havant to score a goal unchallenged because Boreham Wood's earlier goal an overhit back pass had gone in after a player had been injured?

Chorley 1-0 up vs Fleetwood.. Lancashire Derby funnily enough, both small Towns just outside Blackpool.

2nd round draw very un-kind to the non-league sides. I don't think we'll be seeing an overweight goalkeeper eating a pie during the match this year.

Isn't Chorley about thirty miles from Blackpool?

Edit;just had a look, it's 27 miles away.

There is a regular at the Abbey, Mackem Keith, a well known character. I think he can start looking forward to a league match between his first and second clubs with serious intent.

When did this word start popping up in tabloid journalism? What is there to understand? Is it a case of covering their backsides when they get something hilariously wrong by saying they misunderstood?

This will be the first time since 2005 where Man Utd wont be televised in a round they're included in Shocked

BT Sport have gone with the 2 derby games and the wankfest over the potential of Jamie Vardy playing his ex-club.

The question - Will any of the premier league clubs play anything close to a first XI?

The top 6 - No way as the league position and Europe is more important.
The bottom 10 are all in a relegation fight so wont risk any of their top players.

Burnely, Leicester and Everton are the only teams that may play something close to the first XI.
But then again they may claim everybody is tired after playing so much over xmas.

Burnely are 18/1 to win tomorrow. Worth a punt!

I'd expect Klopp to pick a near first choice 11 tonight (Obviously there are a couple of injuries).

Have to say, a lot of Prem teams are playing strong sides.

Maybe not the first XI but they aren’t putting out the 2nd team like the league cup.

As somebody said previously, the German model would be good in the early rounds in that the lower ranked team gets the home game and no replays.
Also scrap the 1/2 finals at Wembley.

A pathetic defence of the cup. One of your only realistic chance of silverware, and thats the squad he picks.

This was my thinking too. Ridiculous giving most of your 1st team a rest when you’ve nothing to play for

Very surprising by Wenger. Best chance of a trophy and he puts out that team.
I feel he’ll need top 4 or win the EL or else the fans will have a total meltdown.

"Nothing to play for"?

They've got the Lge Cup Semi-Finals coming up, plus the Europa League, and they must be desperate to finish back in the Top Four again.

Considering that was their 10th game since 07 December, and they've another 6 games before they play at Spurs on 10 February, I'd say another FA Cup tie squeezed in there would be very far down Wenger's list of priorities.

Though I'm still chuckling mightily at this latest embarrassment at the City Ground LOL

An FA cup win would keep the pressure off, I don’t think a league cup win would.
And I can’t see them winning the EL.
Just my opinion of course but teams focusing on a league cup instead of the FA cup is silly

It's funny to observe the sky effect in full swing. League cup was the laughing stock; sky cover it; big competition. Like the premier league being the best in the world :-)

I barely regard the League Cup as a major competition anymore.

Half the teams don't care about it, Round 1 falls in pre-season and round 2 falls between games 2 and 3 so they'd rather not get players injured.
The seeding system is bollocks
and the Match fixing from Carabao sunk the trophy to new lows this season.

He has played very little this season, and obviously hasn't been great when he has due to a lack of games. He's the type of player who needs a run of games before he starts performing. Will be shocked if he's still there in August.

I hate Arsenal Fan TV with an absolute undying passion but someone had tagged me in a video on Facebook and it was trending on Twitter so I had to see what the fuss was about.

Robbie the main host interviewed an Arsenal fan "What did you enjoy the most about the match" the fan answers with "The fact I'm blind so I couldn't see that sh*t performance" LOLLOL

I think it was the mid-seventies when it really kicked off, Brighton only adopting the 'seagull' nickname as a response to Palace's 'Eagles'. It really took off when Alan Mullery took charge of Brighton and Venables went to Palace, the pair had never got on at Spurs and their rivalry, the fact that Palace and Brighton had spent most of the previous decades in the same division, and also  that neither had a real derby, meant a real animosity developed. I'm sure there are pictures online of Mullery flicking the 'v' sign at the Palace fans. He also went into the Palace dressing room after a game, chucked his spare change at Venables and told him 'that's all you and your team are worth'. Bit of a character was Mullers!

Definitely not a media one. This is one of those quirky and peculiarly English derbies that pretty much went under the national media radar for a long time before being picked up on.
My favourite story, supposedly true but it may be wishful on my part, is that the sobriquet adopted by the Brighton fans, and later the club itself, of 'the Seagulls', which was a result of this fixture, led to 'police intelligence'(an oxymoron if ever there was) spending much time and money infiltrating the neo-Nazis on the coast, believing they were chanting 'sieg heil' and not 'Sea-gulls'. Brighton has always been a well known hotbed of fascism.

He also went into the Palace dressing room after a game, chucked his spare change at Venables and told him 'that's all you and your team are worth'. Bit of a character was Mullers!
This report indicates that Mullery threw the money towards the Palace fans at the side of the pitch:
http://www.croydonadvertiser.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/brighton-crystal-palace-fans-hate-846765" rel="nofollow - http://www.croydonadvertiser.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/brighton-crystal-palace-fans-hate-846765

Anyhow, it seems Mullery has made up somewhat with Venables, maybe after becoming a born-again Christian?
"I went to QPR [as manager] just after Venners (Terry Venables). Everything about the club was about him. I opened a cupboard door and there was a big coat in there. I asked one of the secretaries whose coat it was. It was Terry’s… I love him dearly, but it was an absolute nightmare taking over from him.”

As for being a "character", I suspect we don't know the half of it:

So now Mullery was in a place that those blessed with a little luck would not wish to visit. Football had deserted him: he and June had lost their lovely house in Surrey and were living in diminished circumstances. “ I just sat there and stared at walls. I mean, I shave every day, but back then, I didn’t shave for weeks. I was an absolute scruff. I didn’t want to go out anywhere.”

The various desperations formed a pinnacle when they agreed on a joint suicide. I ask him how close they came to following through. The reply is unequivocal. “Close to having a shotgun and putting it under her nose. I went upstairs and got it out of the cupboard. She was fast asleep. Yeah, it was as close as that.

Cheers Terri. It is quite sad, to say the least, to read about Mullery's problems.
The penalty Deco referenced above is covered in the first link too.

P.S. Forgot to mention, but Palace are not "The Eagles", they'll always be "The Glaziers" to me, just like Chelsea are "The Pensioners". (And the Arse are "The Woolwich Gypsies")

The rivalry started before then but that's just when it peaked.

Brighton were the only football club in West Sussex until 2011 when Crawley joined the ranks so their nearest before then was Palace who are 45 miles up the M23, hence why it's known as the M23 derby.

Any future games chosen?
