We drew Germany, Israel, Norway, Azerbaijan & Kosovo. Could have been worse. That said would not rate our prospects of qualifying with King in charge.

How the f**k is King still in that job

Someone like Kilbane would probably be better. Certainly no worse anyway

The FAI are willing to settle for less therefore we will probably finish 4th.

me too.  Big smile  Went over the border in 2011 before the Macedonia game but don't really count a country now until I see a football match there.

Assume they will be allowed to play U21 games at home. Senior games are played in Albania at the moment.

Nice draw.  Germany will obviously be strong favourites but hopefully we can challenge for 2nd.

Here are the weeks on which each game will take place - no exact dates and who we will be playing on each date.

• Kosovo and Gibraltar are making debuts among a record 54 teams competing in qualifying.

• The nine group winners will qualify automatically for the finals.

• The four runners-up with the best records against the teams first, third, fourth and fifth in their group will go into the play-offs and be drawn into two ties to decide the last pair of qualifiers.

Could do worse and appoint one of the succesful managers from the LOI.
Stephen Kenny would be a fantastic appointment.

Provisional fixtures are here

2017

March 25: Ireland v Kosovo

September 5: Azerbaijan v Ireland

October 5: Ireland v Norway

October 9/10 (TBC): Ireland v Israel

November 14: Norway v Ireland

2018

March 27: Ireland v Azerbaijan

September 7: Kosovo v Ireland

September 11: Ireland v Germany

October 11: Israel v Ireland

October 16: Germany v Ireland

Forget Azerbaijan away as it is on the day of Serbia home.  Kosovo away in Sept 2018 will depend on Nations League fixtures.

Yes Stephen Kenny, but i'd like to see him remain with Dundalk at the moment and see if he can carry on his good work. I don't think there is anyone else within the league at the minute who might get us to a majoe finals. Possibly Kerr.

Reckon we've got a decent shot at making the playoffs.  No idea what Norway are like, can't imagine Azerbaijan and Kosovo are too great and Israel are very very average.  Noel King worries me though, as other lads have said

whats more worrying is someone in the FAI isn't doing something about it. every year were useless at u21 level but these people still stay in a job year on year. it should be in the FAI's interest for us to have a good u21 set up/manager etc. what do you have to do to get sacked at u21 level?

Anybody know the venue for our home games?

I see Waterford are at home on the 25th so it seems unlikely we will continue in the RSC.  Cork City are also at home as are Galway.

Shamrock Rovers are away as are Sligo Rovers.  Both have been used often enough in the past. Any chance of the Markets Field in Limerick?

yep, they just don't care at all.  We have a few good lads in that group, we should get a manager who can really bring the best out of them, not stick with a man who's been failing for a while.

Should have a decent midfield with those available, a lot of those are breaking through with their clubs and in some cases are regular,s isn't Liam Kelly still eligible too?
What are our opponents like? Norway have a decent reputation for producing talent at the moment and, Odegaard aside, have a few players well known to talent scouts and football manager aficionados like Ajer, Sorloth, Thorsby and Samuelson. Anybody have any information on Israel or the others?

As an aside, anybody know how Baba is getting on? Hadn't heard his name in a while.

Nothing too special in the Israel side.  A few good lads - Neta Lavi, Ayad Habashi, Michael Ohana. Did well in their last campaign coming 2nd in a group with Portugal, Greece, Albania, Hungary and Liechtenstein.  Their only loss was against Portugal, missed out on a playoff spot by a point.  They've lost quite a few decent players since that campaign though.  The head coach isn't too great either, hasn't lasted a year in any job.

Edit - If players born in 95 can't play then you can cross Habashi and Ohana off my list.  Lavi would be the sole standout player.

Boyle and Kinsella can play at the back, but I agree it does look a bit lightweight

The U-19's have qualifying in the next week or two, assume he will be in their squad for that. Same with Connor Ronan.

Connor Ronan is injured, unfortunately. I can see Ronan Hale being with the U19s, but worth pointing out that his brother Rory Hale is in the U21 squad for the first time too. He's been waiting 18 months for clearance

Josh Cullen played well, Dimaio had some nice touches. Your man Shodipo played well in the first half and scored a scrappy goaI but I wasn't really impressed by anyone else.

BSM, I think we should be beating teams of Kosovo's level a lot easier. Certainly by a least a couple of goals.

yeah we were slightly the better of two poor teams but i think its a fairly new look Irish team not sure what friendlies are on before our next qualifier in Sept hopefully the team can gel by then
Shodipo was our stand out player and deserved his goal....but this was Kosovos first ever competitive U21 game and we should have won by more but then again it could have ended up 1-2.

I think MON has already said that Rice would be included in the U21s.

That was before his exploits at the weekend against Southampton.  There must be a fair chance he'll get a late call-up to the senior squad given the game-time he is now getting (currently playing against Cheltenham).  Hope he is.

Yes, good squad  Clap A lot of lads with plenty of Championship or SPL experience there.   Most experienced U21 squad we've had for a while.

Only omission you might question would be the boy Ronan Hale, who seems to have great potential.  However he's not yet made his league debut for Birmingham, so fair enough.

The thing is though the FAI really don't seem to be remotely bothered by the results and development of players, as any other country in the competition is.
The under-21 set up is a mechanism for tying as many english youngsters in to the irish system for as long as possible as an insurance in case they turn out to be any good. That is Noel King's sole remit as under-21 manager and in that respect this employers will perceive that he is doing a swell job.
That is the mentality of the federation that runs our national football set up unfortunately and there are all to many Ireland  fans who buy in to that mentality all too readily.

How do you know this is the FAI remit.

What Irish players should have been chosen against the English based players?

The thing is though the FAI really don't seem to be remotely bothered by the results and development of players, as any other country in the competition is.
The under-21 set up is a mechanism for tying as many english youngsters in to the irish system for as long as possible as an insurance in case they turn out to be any good. That is Noel King's sole remit as under-21 manager and in that respect this employers will perceive that he is doing a swell job.

I don't know what King's remit is but Conor Dimaio cannot get a start for Chesterfield. Same for Kinsella at Walsall. Trevor Clarke is a talent and was superb for our u-19s last year.

If you look at our under-21 squads from the last several years it is usually three quarters english players and mainly from under-23 squads and players in lower division squads who rarely amount to anything.
Put this together with the FAI's satisfaction with the mediocrity of our performances and results over as long as you can remember (thinking nicking a win against Andorra is a great triumph) and the persistence with Noel King in charge, and the fact that Noel King is also in charge of British player recruitment and is judged and incentivised by how many english youngsters he can get capped in ROI squads.
Then think of the meticulous dedication to unearthing grandparental connections of kids at english academies and contrast this with the pitiful neglect of player and club development on these shores and its clear they are putting all their eggs in the granny rule basket.
Other associations look to improve the quality of their national team by investing effort, time and resources in to developing youth football within their jurisdiction. Belgium is a great example of a country that has turned around their fortunes by doing just this.
The FAI on the other hand think it is easier to just tap up as many players as they can get hold of from a neighbour who has this structure in place.
This is ethically dubious, lazy and parasitic and it is also unfair on the irish born kids who get neglected as a result and denied the opportunity to represent their country in favour of players from abroad who couldn't get in their own national age group squad.
Also if a bunch of mediocre english players who can't get anywhere near qualifying for the under-21 finals ever are so much better than the best Ireland can produce then there's something seriously wrong with the development of young players in this country. That isn't going to change until the mindset of Irish football and its governors changes.

Irish born or not isnt it Kings job to pick the best side? (leaving aside the fact he's a total príck)

That basically confirms that the policy at under age is to cap English born lads to get them into the set up.

I still can't get my head around the fact that he hasn't called up Trevor Clarke

Simple, he was born in Ireland.

yeah why would you pick a talented young irish player with a bright future when you can give out dozens of u21 caps to obscure english players plying their trade in non league who will never get within 100 miles of a senior call up. noel king you sir are an assClown

Because then the FAI can keep tabs on these player's so they can potentially give them a cap incase they turn out to be any good.

Yeah but playing for the u-21's doesnt tie you down internationally so I'm not sure thats the case

Yeah but picking English born player's means the FAI can get them involved in the system earlier meaning they have a good case of tieing them in incase they turn out to be good.

Ah sure we are a small country (probably the excuse King will use post match when we inevitably go on the f*ck up this result).

Thats arguably our strongest u21 side for quite some time. With a number of players playing for large clubs in England.

And no, Whelan is from Chester.

I think a lot of our youngsters have more potential than a lot of Youngsters we have had for years (Not all youngster's though but we have more with good potential). Im a big fan of a few players in the U19 that I'm stunned weren't included in the 21's e.g Jason Molumby.
