Right folks .... Travelling through Europe at the moment and I've travelled a fair amount around the world staying in hostels . Sometimes I feel a bit old to be staying in hostels(33) & other times I'm grand . But it always depends on the company you meet .

Is there a too old age to stay in a hostel and also what are the worst nationality you have encountered ?

I've never met a worst bunch than the Israeli folk

It used never bother me staying in hostels but I need my own room these days. It not so much that I feel old but I definitely have less patience and just want somewhere to relax.

The last time I stayed in a hostel was Stockholm. There were two Germans in our room. They were only in their twenties and sat reading books on their beds each night and got up at 7.30 each morning - great craic...

I got back to the room about 4am on match night. I decided to make no noise, so stripped off outside the door, folded all my clothes ready to put beside my bed. I opened the door quietly and tip toed through the darkness. All was going well until the mountian of pint change started to fall out of the pocket of my folded jeans - viking real metal coins slamming and spinning onto the tiled floor. The tutt tutting and silent sighing of the Germans really wound me up...

The main nationalities I met on younger travels were (with the usual huge generalisations):

- South Africans: crazy mthfckers, they have seen it all and probably shot fellas for stealing apples. They've no problem dishing it out if someone goes too far. Thankfully the ones I encountered judged the line well.

- Aussies: a big mix. They often seem dumb but then surprise you with something intelligent or deep.

- Canadians: wild and up for whatever. Live for the moment.

- Swedes: they seem to have a strange set of rules they stick by for the normal day to day things and look down on anyone different from that. Forget these and go wild after midnight. Don't really get them.

- Germans: didn't come across many in hostels but any I did were sound enough. Strange sense of humour. Birds boring during the day and strangely kinky at night.

- English: Most were sound and good craic. I caught a few thieving things, like CDs and any nice clothes from the laundry if you went for a beer while the drier was on.

- Israelis: met more of them in other areas. If they're in a group, there's always a leader. He'll never be the one mouthing off or shaping. Stand up to him and the leader will step forward. Only deal in pure logic. Arrogant.

- French: again not many in the hostels. Those I came across were thinkers, looking to expand their mind during their travels. Standoffish at first but very friendly once you have intelligent conversation. Small doses.

At 34 I feel a private room in a hostel is the only way to go for me. That said if with a group of lads I know then booking out a dorm would be grand.

I would agree to a point with the opening two posts regarding Israeli's. Met a heap of them when traveling on the eastern side of Mexico in 2005. The were all just after completing their mandatory military service and backpacking around the Americas. The men were the most arrogant and abnoxious yolks I've ever met however the women were very friendly and great craic. Boozed with the women and even hooked up with one when we went for a a couple of days to isla mujeres.

Israelis are notoriously the worst tourists.  They come across as very rude and arrogant, although if you knew Israelis you'd know it's not how they intend to come across.  Merely a cultural thing, they think we are weird for our lack of bluntness and arrogance, there is no "polite" culture over there.

Hahaha, well fair enough.  By my estimations they're alright, they just have absolutely no filter or polite culture

For most of the last few summers i've worked in party hostels as a cheap and good craic holiday where you can meet loads of new people. The thing i'll never get into my head is people who complain like f**k and then leave a bad review because the hostel was noisy and they didnt get a great sleep. It literally says party hostel in the name!! The first one i worked in Poland there were occasionally people bringing their kids to it and expecting a quiet night's sleep Confused

Have hostelled on 4 continents and I have never met any nationality with even an ounce of the arrogance of Israelis.

It really doesn't take much contemplation to figure out why they've such a massive and unashamed superiority complex.

The S. Africans have a touch of it too and it's a hangover from their Apartheid era. By the same token though, they didn't believe they were god's chosen people.

White Saffirs are complete coonts in general, they manage to have both a superiority complex and a chip on their soldier, they also speak like stoned Australians, which is never good.

Aussies are just ****s, nearly impossible to meet an Australian who isn't racist, annoying or trying too hard to be masculine while sounding incredibly camp. That includes the women.

I met a few great Israelis, to be fair though they had all refused to do the military service and f**ked off, in general they are arrogant f**ks, including their often very pretty females.

I agree what was said above about re: nationalities but the swiss are the most boring. They just offer nothing.

At 33 you're grand to stay in hostels, you wont be this young again so make the most of it. You wont have the energy to travel that much when you are in your 40's.
Travelling is all about the people you meet and experiences, not the accommodation you stayed in.

You will know yourself when you just become tired of it and you wont stay in a hostel again.

Agree with South Africans mad bunch altogether used to work with a South African lad who got sacked for an extremely violent and unnecessary racist tirade to fellow in work of darker complexion.

Hostels are ghastly places and breeding ground for left wing extremists :)

Chosen does not mean superior.  If you said that to an Israeli they'd probably take offence at what you're implying.  Not to mention nearly half of them being secular anyway

There is certainly an element of that (i.e the blunt nature of their culture) but with the Israelis I encountered on my travels it goes beyond even that. For starters they almost always seemed to stick to their own groups - they were pretty poor at integrating to any degree with the other nationalities. They also regularly just came across as selfish pr*cks - for example if a hostel had an amenity like a pool table/table tennis table they would happily hog the yoke for the vast majority of the day, seemingly oblivious to the fact that others might want to use it as well. I would be confident enough that if you asked 100 backpackers which nationality they buzzed off the least on their travels 90+ would respond with 'Israelis'.

I think a big part of it has to be the fact nearly all of them are coming out of their two years of military service. They must be in a slightly strange head space to have such freedom after a stint like that - and then the pack mentality on top of that. I've been to Israel once before years ago and the people there were absolutely grand - it just seems to be when they travel in numbers like that that they p*ss off pretty much every other nationality universally. I would agree that the birds tend to be far sounder as well.

As for the rest:

Canadians: Great craic - big drinkers who are generally far more chilled out and fun then their southern neighbours.
Australians: Very much hit and miss. Most the ones you will find in S.A Asia are on their equilivent of a Ryanair holiday so you get all sorts. The further away from Australia you get (South America etc) the sounder they tend to be. Can be extremely funny b*stards.
Swiss: Totally agree with Zinedine - tend to offer nothing. The fact their country is famous for clock making says it all.
English: Bit like the Aussies, although more likely to be sound.
Germans/Austrians: Never really had any issues although as another poster said they tend to have a fairly odd sense of humour.
Swedes/Danes: Laid back and friendly - tend to be a bit less loud than the other nationalities.

Actually, I have to make an exception for a great lad who was in a hostel in Mexico I stayed in. Couldn't have been friendlier and a great conversationalist. A huge Pogues fan. Had dodged time in the IDF too, now I recall.

Was an Israeli living down my way at home too with his Irish girlfriend(kind of Irish, she  was from Wicklow), he shared my opinion of the Israeli state and used to give me the odd lift to college, his love of Jamaican culture and my discomfort in cars made me source alternative transportation, interesting fella though. Have met quite a few who dodged their service.

- heard much worse in Oz itself.

I went into work the Monday after a crazy rooftop Saturday party. I said to a colleague I didnt know how no-one fell that night. He told me someone did, when I looked shocked he said " don't worry, it was only an Abbo" and laughed like the galah that he was. (And it was true, the poor girl ended up paralysed).

On a sales road trip in deep country NSW, I noticed a group of houses all boarded up. I was told that they were houses given to the Aborigines who smash the windows in the summer when too hot and burn the floorboards and stairs when too cold in the winter before asking for another. I was warned that some might jump in front of the car looking for compo and that's why they all have 'Abbo bars' on their utes. There's no talking to them...I thought the main pub in the town was great at the time though, normal bar with topless lounge girls.

Worked on building sites in Sydney for most of a year many moons ago, the foreman was an interesting character, born in England, his (English) oul lad was an Oxford professor of something or other, highly intelligent & a very dark sense of humour. Interesting character who had done a bit of travelling, even making a living doing commercial fishing in Iceland for a few years, but also the worlds laziest man as regard work. Only giving a bit of background because the following comment could (and probably will be) taken the wrong way, and it was said with humour that would be typical of the fella, but not to everyone's taste.  It's still one of the most 'Australian' things I've ever heard........

Morning smoke break- usually spent by meself & foreman taking the piss out of various Aussie fellow workers, even though a lot of the sarcasm was lost on them.

This particular morning, for whatever reason, there was only the 2 of us sitting in a corner and yer man says to me; 'Got a letter last night from me son from me first marraige' (he was on his 3rd marraige at the time)

Me' Right. Whats the craic there then ? '
Him ' He says he wants to meet me, he's 18 now'
Me ' Are ya going to meet him so ? '
Him ' If I wanted to fcukin meet him, I never would have abandoned him in the first place'

If anyone has met an Israeli blunter than that.........................

That one made me laughLOL I don't think I will ever be setting foot in Australia myself though, I'm not the best around racism.
How d fck have you survived in Cork so LOL
Never came across that much of it there to be honest, certainly much more over here. I find most people racist though, which is why I avoid most of them!

Not most but quite a lot, I should clarify. Most people are arseholes though!

The S. Africans have a touch of it too and it's a hangover from their Apartheid era. By the same token though, they didn't believe they were god's chosen people.

Chosen does not mean superior.  If you said that to an Israeli they'd probably take offence at what you're implying.  Not to mention nearly half of them being secular anyway

What am I implying?

Implying that Jews/Israelis believe they are chosen/superior to everyone else.

Ah i wouldnt read too much into the "choosen people" stuff.
If you talk to your average Irish Catholic they are convinced what they are following is bang on the money. The Jews, The Budhists etc are away with the faries.
Its the same for the vast majority of religions. Simply put they cant accept that the other guys could be right or that they all could be wrong. They refuse to pull at that thread.

Also, the thread is racist. Its clearly racist to say "I`ve never met a worse crowd than the Israelis" or im not racist but i meet a Southa African prick and he started on this other black lad so clearly all South Africans are pricks!LOL

People who take sweeping generalisations too seriously on a message board need a shake :0

Based on experience i would not disagree with the sweeping generalisations that Australians are an ignorant crass bunch, Israelis are pig headed superior and arrogant and Somalians are psychotic bug eyed violent lunatics.

I have met lovely people from all of the above countries ha

My rule of thumb when encountering Israelis abroad was if they were in groups then avoid them at all costs. Some of the ones traveling by themselves or in ones and twos were grand. I met a few really cool Israelis also. Having said that, they have the worst knobhead to sound ratio of any nationality I've come across.

My pal owns a few large hostels in South America and he won't accommodate them. His experience is that they won't pay what they owe and will cause grief. Given that they tend to travel in large numbers and are straight out of the army in a lot of cases then it's going to be difficult to recoup what you're owed.

My mate was in Peru a few years ago and said they were arseholes but you wouldn't mess with them. My mate wouldn't be a soft touch either. They were arguing over the price of the hostel with the owner which was something like 3 U.S. dollars each per night. My mate was steamed and jokingly shouted 'Free Palestine' and one of them (probably Lhurz off here) replied like the Termintor 'Palestine does not exist' LOL

It's only just opened. I'm doing it next weekend with a couple of friends. I'll report back. There's lots of videos online and it looks class.

I've booked the hotel and all that craic . Seems like it will be well used . I was talking to someone today and they know a man who has a pub somewhere along the route and they only opened a couple of times a year for the sake of holding onto the license but now they are onto a good thing with this new cycle way . Let me know how you get on and any little spots to stop of to rehydrate. Oh Treacy's have a good triple room for €120 a night . Good location with pool facilities if your staying over .

Tom Meaghers , great pub but check the opening/closing times as they are a bit erratic.
McLoughlins across the road is good as well.

Picked a good spot Butch, think it is the only pub in Ireland with a squash court (which I bet you didn't see) out the back. Can be good spot for live music too and a fairly mixed clientele, but all good, John puts up with no messing.

DB, Tom Meaghers is different these days (serves women & all LOL) & has got something of a makeover, fantastic small pub, but now one that is actually welcoming and does keep regular hours, at least at weekends. When Mrs Meagher (& Tom before her) was alive, the opening/closing times were really only known to regulars, and it was difficult enough to become one of those if you were under 40.

McLaughlins is now called Tully's, after being closed for a few years, it got a bit of a makeover as well, nice pub too, the new owners have put in a load of craft beers & usually have some kind of Trad music going on at weekends. They seem to be doing well there anyway, its busier than McLaughlins used to be.

Also reopened, and respect if you were ever in it, because its one of very few pubs in Waterford I was never in, and I don't know too many who have been, is JK Walsh's on George's St after being closed for over a decade. Bought by a Kilkenny businessman (who also bought T&H's , sadly that's at a standstill for years now over some planning issue) who has reopened it as a Whiskey bar. Looking forward to seeing it, of the pubs I was never in, its probably the only one I wanted to visit, might fix that next weekend.

@ Deise I was actually only in two bars in Waterford city . Tullys and Downes . Tullys was a decent spot. Decent crowd for a afternoon session . Bar man sound and on the ball with pints and sorted us for a place to grub later on . Later that night back to Treacys our hotel and it was as rough as a bears arse with some of us Dublin folk . Past midnight and the kids still in the bar , some of the aul wants even had the furry bedroom slippers on as they were only goin up to bed ! I read about the squash court and vinyl night was on in Downes .

Ya, Treacy's (or The Bridge as I would know it, DB would probably call it Breens) owes its existence to coach loads of Dubs coming down for the weekend, most of whom rarely leave the hotel. Wouldn't be many D4 types about, to say the least. Tis not somewhere frequented by any locals really.
