only place I ever felt unsafe was Bulgaria away in 09. a few people in the street giving the "slit-throat" sign and saying "f**k you ireland", properly up in your face. also, Sofia was a complete sh*t-hole, so I wouldn't go back. As for Belgrade, whilst Serbia do have a bad reputation, you'll be fine as long as you don't wander off by yourself into a dodgy part of town.

before the game as we were walking around town. in the ground their fans weren't watching the game, just gesticulating towards us most of the time.

Didn't feel intimidated at any point in Sofia. Didn't even know there was an escort to the ground. We did the hop on hop off sightseeing tour bus before having a few pints and walking to the stadium from the city centre. All very sedate really. Got the pic taken outside the ground with Hristov Stoichkov after the match.
