Huge opportunity for Darragh today as he starts against Brighton.

Paul Lambert has been singing his praises lately.

Was playing a lot towards the end of last season, hopefully he can get a good run of games now. Good to hear Lambert speak highly of him. From the same town as me, he's a sound fella.

Can't find any links for the goal. Fair play to him all the same.

Has he been playing regularly for Blackburn this season? Haven't seen much of him. Solid enough?

As O'Shea said, he'd be one of the regular CB's. Has had a mixed season so far though, but that's bound to happen in a side like Blackburn. A good header for the goal, attacked the ball well.

At the rate we seem to have centre backs coming through you'd have to wonder how many more caps he'll get. Starting to look like a position of serious depth for us, though we could do with one of them doing a McGrath and doubling up as a midfielder.

Yeah but things can change quickly in football, all it takes is one or two injuries or a player being frozen out etc.. As it stands hes behind Duffy, O'Shea, Egan and Clark but you'd still have him ahead the likes of Long and Dunne. Probably even Collins and Omobamidele too if they're not getting any game time this season.

Still only 27 and crazy that we are now in a position to ignore an established and consistent championship player like Lenihan. I believe he's often captained the side too.

He'll do well to get another cap to be honest. Similar thing happened to Damian Delaney, never got much of a look in with Ireland and he actually played over 100 EPL games.

We always seem to have loads of centre backs for whatever reason.

Unfortunate for him, if he played any other position on the pitch he would probably have 20+ caps for us by now. It really is amazing that we just seem to churn out centre halves so reliably. We could probably field a full XI of Championship or better standard centre halves.

Posted By: Bandwagon
Date Posted: 01 Nov 2021 at 8:31pm
Kenny has always spoke very highly and name checked him a couple times, Id be surprised if he wasn't involved again to some degree over the next few years.

All it takes is one or two injuries, especially playing 3 at the back where we need an extra body.

With O'Shea out injured at the moment he probably is about 5th choice behind Duffy, Egan, Omobamidele and Collins. If someone was to pick up a knock now and miss the double header he'd probably be next in line.

                  Duffy
McGuiness Collins O'Shea
         Andy O. Lenihan
Williams Clark K.Long Egan
                 Keogh

Subs:
Dunne, Manning (playing LCB for Swansea this season)

Not even dipping into League 1 or SPL for O'Hora, Masterson, Scales.

Kenny will recognise this and won’t forget it.

But as people say, if he was lucky enough to be playing in another area of the pitch it would make him an automatic starter.

Darragh Lenihan - 8

Considering he was walking a tightrope after his cynical challenge on Browne in the early stages, he was impeccable. Heavily involved both in and out of possession. Isolated Riis with his aggressive demeanour and won countless aerial duels and challenges.

Just about hitting his prime as a player and is playing some excellent football.

Surely can't be ignored for the march games, especially if omobamidele isn't playing much and oshea is coming back from injury.

O'Shea is back in training, should be back by the end of the month / start of the new year.

Its crazy how many central defenders we have playing at a high level compared to other areas

Premier League
Duffy
Clark
Collins
Long
Omobamidele

Championship
O'Shea
Egan
McGuinness
Dunne
Lenihan
McLoughlin
Pearce
Keogh

Plus so many other young potential talent like McEntee, O'Brien, McNulty Garcia, Curtis, Heffernan.

Really unlucky not to be in the squad last couple of windows, hope he gets in for March as he's earned a shot. We'll also probably need him for June with 4 games in 10 days.

They've conceded 1 goal in their last 9 games when he's been on the pitch. All the goals they conceded in the FA Cup happened after he was substituted with a knock.

Blackburn well placed for automatic promotion. Bournemouth and West Brom don't look like they'll stick the landing on current form.

Looking forward to seeing Lenihan brought in, deserves his chance. O'Shea, Omobamidele and Collins have played very little football so far this season for various reasons.

Id also go with Doherty for Coleman at RWB, Manning for Doherty at LWB.

Nothing to be learned playing Coleman in March and we need to start preparing for life after him, McClean and Stevens in the wingback positions. Whatever about the Nations League this year, himself and McClean are both going to be 34 by time 2024 qualifiers kick off in 2023 and a year older when the finals come around. Realistically they're going to be reduced to impact sub / squad players going forward.

I have been tempted to mention this but don't want to jinx the lad just hope he keeps doing what he's doing for Blackburn.

Surely if they don't go up he will get top flight interest. Wolves would be a gorgeous spot for anyone of our defenders challenging for Europe often play 3 at the back and they aren't littered with central defenders.

Be great if Blackburn got promoted and he could captain them in the Premier League. Financially it's probably better for him if he moved because Blackburn would more than likely get relegated again.

But after coming from League One to then bringing them back to the PL for the first time in ten years would mean a lot more to him.

red bulls are my local club, have one of the lowest payrolls in the league. Brief google of what his current wages are, I would be very, very surprised if red bulls would pay more than he will get if he goes to a premier league club, or ever re-signs with blackburn with increased wages

Was linked with the likes of Wolves, Everton, Leeds, Villa in January.

Don't see much in the link to WBA, sideways move (if not backwards). Burnley also an option as they have to replace Mee & Tarkowski.
And of course Sheffield United have had him on their radar for years.

There was no EPL interest, so just a question of finding the best possible Championship move. It will mostly have come down to money but probably Boro are also a better bet to get promoted than Blackburn who seem to be forever a mid table team now.

If he's going to get a yellow card he might as well be done for assault and reckless endangerment too.

It wasn't that he was the worst, it's that every attacking threat from Ukraine came down his side. Our right side was definitely our weak spot, but that's understandable with a make shift WB and someone making their competitive debut, along with the pace they had on that side.

Thought he was decent enough on the ball and the yellow card is exactly the type of gamesmanship we need in a young team (I know he's not exactly young).

I thought he did well all things considered. Not a perfect performance by any means but I like how he carries himself on the pitch.

Delighted to see him make his competitive debut. In another era he would have 20 plus caps by now.

Wilder's a great fella for an Irish signing, even if they don't always work out for him like Connolly and Robinson. Middlesbrough have been linked to at least three other Irish players so far this summer - Bazunu (obviously not happening now), Parrott and Brady - so Lenihan might not be the last Irish signing for him this window.

Good move, hopefully Wilder can do a similar job at Boro as he did with Sheffield United. They were great fun to watch.

Hasn't been a good move so far for him.

Up to 5th now, under Carrick, after the disaster start under Wilder.

Boro have guaranteed at least a Play-Off spot now.
Lenihan having a great season, featuring constantly as the LCB in the 2. He should be in the Ireland squad ahead of Omobamidele, who isn't having a good season.

Captaining Middlesbrough today, for the first time I think.

Good chance of going up I think - Can no longer be omitted from squads if he's playing regular PL football. Good luck to him, he's been unlucky not to have won more caps imo.

Captains Middlesbrough in the playoff semi final first leg against Coventry at 12 o'clock. McNally starts for Coventry, Seanie Maguire on the bench for them also.

It finished 0-0, which is probably the scoreline you would want with two Irish centre backs playing. Keith Andrews was at it. I only saw the second half but Lenihan looked good, while McNally didn't have as much defending to do but looked very comfortable in possession.

Two very decent players, but in a position we're relatively strong in. They're probably next in line now after Egan, Collins, O'Shea and Omobamidele - not sure where Duffy sits at this stage as he hasn't been playing much. With O'Shea probably injured and Duffy hardly playing, either or both of them could be in the next squad.

Yeah wouldn't be surprised, especially with Coleman out wh also covers RCB and Collins too playing very little ball.

Lenihan should arguably have been a regular in the squad anyway, he was excellent in last summers games for us and has been performing just as well as Egan and O'Shea in the Championship.

Coleman’s out and O’Shea is a question mark too.

Both Lenihan and McNally are next in line and should be in the squad. About time we brought in McNally now perfect for the way he’s trying to play and playing to a decent standard now with potential for a higher ceiling again.

Bit mad this fella is 29 and only has 3 caps. Seems solid and consistent.

Thought he was dreadful last night, look at his positioning for the winner as a LCB.

I've been saying for years he's not up to it, O'Shea lacking match fitness would still have been better.

Unfortunately, none of the big calls worked last night. Lenihan and O'Dowda were really poor, the midfield shape didn't work, and Idah wasn't good up front.

Had a poor game, I was surprised Egan didnt start in that LCB role and said as much before the game. Egan has played there often for Sheff Utd and would maybe have been better able to help O'Dowda. Lenihan did the same thing as outlined on a number of occasions - clearly not used to playing in a 3 where you have to sometimes mark the space inside or behind the LWB rather than pick up a man.

Despite some iffy moments, he was ranked as Ireland's 2nd best player statistically speaking.

80 touches
60/70 passes completed (86.7%)
2/3 long ball completed (66.9%)
5 passss into final third

5/5 aerial duels won (100%)
Dribbled past - 0 times
5 clearances
3 blocks
2 recoveries
