Found this DVD in my house earlier and said I'd upload it to youtube because as far as I know there is none of it available online.

It's an RTE/Setanta production showing highlights, interviews, stats etc of Ireland's 2002 World Cup journey. Most of you probably know about it.

Anyway here's the link for anyone who cares: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=moqMLByySZY

It's not watchable in Germany and I have no idea what the structure is Embarrassed

Thanks but hola is to be avoided ( at least here where law firms actively chase people)

this from an ex-pat community in Germany

Here comes something really spooky...

Most of you are probably aware that one problem that all VPN providers face lies in  the fact that they only have a limited number of IP addresses to assign to customers, and as such, content providers who feel the urge to block accesses via VPNs can simply block that range of addresses. Those folks on this forum that used SmartDNS or a VPN to Ireland to watch the Irish telly know what I am talking about.

Today, I stumbled across a VPN provider who claims not to have that problem: https://luminati.io/" rel="nofollow - https://luminati.io/

One thing that they claim on their website: "Luminati is the world's largest VPN network. Use Luminati to route data through any of our millions of IPs that are located in every city around the world."

So I just thought: "Hey, let's look up how many IPs the claim to have in Ireland". At the time of writing this is claimed to be a whopping 61121 Irish IPs. Gosh...

So I spend a few minutes thinking about how they might manage to possess "millions of IPs", especially more than 60000 in Ireland alone. Then it hit me with a hammer...

When I scrolled down on that aforementioned website, it says "Luminati is a service by Hola".

Some of you may know what Hola is, some folks on this forum even recommended it, but a long time ago I explicitly warned about using Hola, the original article is here: http://www.toytowngermany.com/forum/topic/255234-experience-with-hidemyass-vpn-service/?do=findComment&comment=3203597" rel="nofollow - http://www.toytowngermany.com/forum/topic/255234-experience-with-hidemyass-vpn-service/?do=findComment&comment=3203597

So, this is the current status: Some folks install a free product called Hola in their browser to have a better "experience" while using the internet, and the folks running the company Hola let their subsidiary "Luminati" sell the bandwidth of those free user of Hola to paying Luminati customers. The exit nodes (or IPs) of the Luminati VPN service are PCs running Hola!

This is so unbelievably freaky...

On one side, using Luminati could be an interesting service, because I believe that access to some blocked content (e.g. Irish TV) could be possible again using Luminati as provider.

On the other side, I must strongly discourage anybody using Hola to continue using it.

What a team, what a summer that was.

2002 was the first real World Cup for me. I was only a kid in 1994 but 2002 was special. I'll never forget Keane's goal against Germany. Even now it's give you some feeling watching that goal back. That Irish team was brilliant, never again will we see a team like that. I used to genuinely get excited seeing that team play. It's like a lifetime ago!

Remember heading into the Roppongi area of Tokyo after the Germany game as we based ourselves in Osaka as was cheaper - was lads sliding down big hill on cases of beer some fun.

Spend sometime then in the Mistress Bar in Roppongi which was an S&M club - credit card took some hit.
Have talked about the same bar with Fat Mike from Nofx as it gets mentioned in one of their songs.

Some thing was happening the week of the Spain game in Seoul on a street everyone used to call hooker hill, lads sliding down it on beer crates, upside down tables, the lot. Absolute carnage, lads falling off as taking all the skin off their back and their legs, some laugh all the same!

A great watch, was only 13/14 for 2002 so didnt really take anything in other than the football and the Saipan fiasco.. Was good to see the interviews of the time.

We also played some fantastic ball under Mick, always think of what could have been if we had Keane, or even had we put Spain away.

Dont think we're ever going to get back to that level unfortunatelyCry

Forgot how good some of the football was then. The versatility we had in the team we had was great too, when he took off the full backs, Kelly and Kilbane could slot back there. Some pace we had a CH too with Stan and Breen LOL Gas to hear them slating Eto'o about his finishing given the player he went on to become.

The fact that that group didnt qualify for another tournament (I'm excluding the Euro's as the lads were at the end of their careers) is a travesty, such a good team. As someone mentioned earlier, it's a shame that Duffer never really had the same performances for us, he was excellent in that tournament. He looks locked in those interviews LOL

Euro 2000 really was the one that got away, matter of seconds away from topping the group, still sickens me thinking about it.

Funny thing is that the qualifiers for this was one of Robbie's worst from a goal scoring perspective.

Before the play offs he only had one goal as far as I know and did not start in some games with duffer and connolly and Doherty all picked ahead of him in 3 of the games.

Strange when you think about it now.

Jaysus, yeah, that was a fair party. We got a taxi from whatever train station, weren't really sure where we were, traffic absolutely mental. I put down the window to let in a bit of air (or exhaust fumes) at some stage, and from about 3 blocks away, you could hear '' Come on ye Boys in Green'' being sung. Said to taxi man - ''Yer grand here John, we know where we are going now'' and just followed the noise.

Great craic with a slab of cans outside the steps of Paddy Foleys and a few thousand people in green well into the brightness of the following day. Come to think of it, I never got inside the door of Paddy Foley's any night given the crowds, but the craic seemed to be outside it in any case.

Still regret coming home before Korea, had started a new job and had little choice, well, that and the fact Aeroflot's next available flight home wasn't until about 4 days after Korea, it would have put over a week on an extended stay, and I was going fairly broke at that stage.

The football, it is still absolutely crazy to me that we 'out-footballed' Spain in that game, and just look at where they have gone since, and where we have gone since. It is hard to credit that we could mix it with one of the major nations of football back then and make us fear them (fair enough, they were nothing near what they became after that) to struggling to beating Georgia & drawing more or less every single game that matters since, all in a relatively short space of time.

We were sad leaving Japan, it was such a great country.

However the trip to Seoul is one of my all time favourite memories.

We awoke with savage hangovers after Yokohama and the sounds of "Arrigato, Arrigato, Arrigato Nippon" ringing in our ears. This was before the mobile phone boom and contact was limited, however we heard from a lad we met in Tokyo who heard from his brother back home that tickets for the Spanish match were on sale the day before the game from the team hotel - in Seoul.

That gave us about 72 hours to get to Seoul.

Two trains sandwiched a stay in Hiroshima before a hover craft got us to Busan just in time for the Korea game against the Portuguese. We watched this in the city square with 100,000 lunatics in their "Be the Reds" tee shirts before boarding an overnight tuk tuk train to Seoul. This train was pure third world but not an iota did we care.

As we turned the corner to the team hotel we saw the que which thankfully confirmed the rumour's accuracy and the golden tickets were procured after a long que.

After we got the tickets we said we'd sneek into the restaurant for a quick breakfast and this place was ultimate five star silver service. We must have been a sight and I'm certain we stank the place out but we were starving and delighted in equal measure having completed our mammoth journey on the strength of a third hand rumour. So in we sat and for the only time in my life I ordered Eggs Benedict (how becoming of me!), it was hands down the nicest thing I have ever eaten - until the bill came. €42. I'm not kidding. I nearly cried.

Anyway, We found a "motel" and threw the bags in before a night on the town, the pub was drank out of beer as we sang "Rappongi Boys in Green" till the early hours.

God be with the days....

It's such a pity we didn't beat the Spanish, who knows where the adventure would have ended.

Good times.

SAme boat as myself. Ireland V Germany going on while we sat down to English paper 1 Cry

I remember watching Ireland Spain in a pub in Killarney, before Cork/Kerry game, pub was packed, everyone due to ehad up to the ground at FT, extra time and penalties meant the Cork/Kerry game started while the shootout was ongoing. The stadium was empty.

Losing to Spain was a killer. All those chances (KILBANE Angry). Korea then in the QF! Who knows!

The terrace outside paddy Foley's was class!! Was there every night, only went inside the pub on the first night!

It was mental on the steps and there were representatives from every country. We had serious craic with some Croats one night, got a postcard from them the following Christmas!

Every country got to sign a song on the steps except when English fans started up they were just sang over!! They couldn't figure why the love in didn't extend to them!!!

Didn't cost a quarter of what the papers would have you believe in the run up. Well, the packages might have but we booked our own flights, got the unlimited travel for a couple of hundred before we went and hostel'ed it when there which wasn't much dearer than at home. Didn't do too much drinking in pubs, mostly cans. Food wise we didn't go too high end. It's a long time ago now but excluding flights I'd say about a couple of grand all told (Korea included).

Ha, I spent many a night on the steps of Paddy Foleys with a slab of cans bought from the shops nearby. We went into it the first night and after a few rounds of beers (€10 a beer If I remember correctly) we moved outside.
The craic outside was just brilliant, I remember the riot police at the bottom of the steps one night and us just singing at them - all friendly banter.

The place was expensive, we ate in MCD, Local shops etc the whole time and spend what we could on booze. We were on our way to Oz for the year so the flights were included in that round-the-world trip which helped.

Didn't go to S Korea as didnt have the cash but what a trip.

The Japanese local were a class act. Helping you out when they could and always asking politely for a photo.

Class world cup and we had a great team too.

It's a long time ago now but excluding flights I'd say about a couple of grand all told (Korea included).
really!?! That's probably the most depressing thing I've ever read lol, there's always next time

Couple of grand is probably under estimating it a bit. We based ourselves in Nagano as that has a load of hotels in it going back to when the winter Olympics was there and was off season in summer so was pretty reasonable. The bullet trains meant you could get anywhere in a few hours anyway. We moved to Tokyo after the second game and did a week there. After that the rest of the lads went home but I went on to Korea, could only change the flight to the same one the next week so had to stay on in Seoul till the Thursday after the game (savage craic that week) and then kip in the airport in Tokyo to get the flight on Friday morning. Think it cost me roughly €5k all in including spending money for a month, best money I ever spent. Would have spent a couple of grand at home anyway no doubt so well worth it.

We spent 16 days in Tokyo (Shinjuku) and just got the train to each of our games from there. It was an amazing trip and I couldn't recommend Tokyo or praise the Japanese people highly enough. We spent 14 solid days on the beer. I actually sort of stayed on Irish time in that I'd get up at about 5pm each day and then go on the lock until 9 or 10am. Trust me, that takes it's toll after two weeks so the last two days were spent sobering up ahead of the trip home. Korea was out for us so that's the way it had to be. As for the cost, we were at the right end for Robbie's goal against Germany so it happened right in front of us. The trip could have cost 10 times as much as it did and it still would have been worth it just for that moment.

Great trip.  We stayed in Niigata for the first 2 nights then Tokyo (near Ueno station)  and then Itaewon in Seoul.  We used the trains and the transport there is superb.  We took the train the length of Japan and then the boat to Korea.

We went with low expectations.  We expected the food to be horrible, the drink too expensive and after Saipan the football to be worse.  Food was great, drink was affordable and great.  Football was brilliant.  My liver wouldn't have lasted a few more days in Itaewon.  Robbie's goal in Ibaraki was the obvious highlight.

While Robbies goal was epic, and should make all best last minute goal conversations redundant, I remember surveying the crowd in the train station on the way to the Cameroon game and then as we emerged into the stand. Goose bumps galore!

If ye remember there had been a lot of talk of the small numbers that we'd be bringing in advance of the tournament... Well we showed 'em. Damn naysayers.

More than likely. The flight was the dearest part of it, I think I paid about ÂŁ 800 punts or so, I left it late enough to book, think it was late February, and knowing no better at the time (first away trip, safe to say tis gone downhill a tad since then..........), just paid for what was the cheapest flight at the time to the local travel agent, which is how I ended up in Shermateyvo for all of 14 hours on me way over. No great craic there on yer own for that long LOL

As a complete novice, I hadn't a clue about tickets or how to get them, but I wanted them before I left as I  didn't know enough to leave it to chance, so I ended up getting category B's from FIFA , they were 400 USD for the 3 games as far as I remember.

Was absolutely fortunate to have a mate that moved to Tokyo 6 months beforehand (He's still there) , so had free accommodation on the floor of his 1 room apartment (there are bathrooms here bigger than a Japanese 1 room apartment) , in truth, that is the only reason I could afford to go in the first place.

The one thing I would say on it is that me mate moved there exactly between the 2 Iran playoffs, there were about 14 of us at his going away night, every one of us said we would go, if we qualified. I was the only one who did. My reasoning, at the time, aside from it being something I wanted to do anyway, was that we might not ever see Ireland at a WC in our lifetimes again. It has sadly proved true for one friend who passed away a few years ago, but it isn't looking great for the rest of us either, in a football sense.

The next time we qualify for anything, go, you simply don't know when it will happen again, or what changes your own life could have by the next time it happens, even of that group of lads I referred to earlier, between lads emigrating, lads married with children, just losing touch with other people as eveyone's lives moved on, lads losing interest in football etc etc, the same Tokyo based chap was the only one of us other than meself that made it to Poland.

@Deise great post , When we were finishing up school (6th year) our teacher said "Look around and remember all the faces it will be the last time the 28 of ye will be in the same room again ever " . Some will not be alive , others will be in jail , some will emigrate ! A lot of lads left the country , one sadly died and the rest lost contact or got married and have kids and don't be around . When 2018 comes along and we hopefully qualify , after reading some of the stories above it makes you wanna go even more

You're 100% Deise. Just go. No if's, but's or maybe's. Don't wait for anyone else just bite the bullet. If we somehow qualify for the Euro's there is no question if I'll go and the missus knows this too.

Japan was a brilliant trip. The fans were superstars for 2 weeks. The Japanese were great craic and it was not nearly as expensive as the likes of Ray Treacy and Hector (on the Late Late show) were making out. IIRC Treacy was charging 4000 or 4500 for a 2 week trip. We did it for less than half that. All this sh*te about a taxi from the airport being 100 quid (its more than 50 miles from Tokyo) and a beer being a tenner was bullsh*t. We just bought from the supermarket for 2 quid a can and drank on the street (or just brought it into the boozer, the locals were to polite to tell you to get out LOL)

Our costs were
Flight 800
Tickets 200
accomm. 600.   90 per room in motel fit 3 lads, so 30each per night

Train 400 for month pass. (Treacy didnt provide this)

If we qualify you just go. Get in debt for a couple of grand, big deal. My mortgage now is 100 times that and I dont think about it.

The reports at the time were ridicolous. This is what turned me off going. Unfortunatley, the internet wasn't as prevalent at the time and it was difficult to do your own research. Should have just got a student loan and headed off..

That's a great post, I agree with all of the sentiment. Went to Poland wasnt a snowballs chance I was missing it, had a ball obviously but the performances on the field ruined it, always looked on 02 as the last of the Italia 90 cycle and my opportunity to experience what I was to young too see with my own eyes instead of on the box. Due to a lack of balls it wasn't to be. Reckon il give france a miss should we qualify and hold out for Russia!! Ash hard as it will be

8 of us after the Iran 2nd leg swore blind we were going to Japan,no matter what. The lads dropped one by one til i was the only one left. Like others said i was in my very early 20s and when everyone said i was mad to go on my own i just said that "by the next time we qualify i could be married with kids".

Roll on 13 years and looking back now and i even knew it then that it was one of the best decisions ive ever made. It was the trip of a lifetime for me and something i will never ever forget. Outside of kids being born if i could go back in time to any moments in my life again it would be Ray Houghtons goal v England and the moments just after Robbie Keane scored v Germany.

Its moments like that which sustain Irish fans in the bad times and to a certain degree we chase those moments still,no matter how old or cynical we get because when its "good" with Ireland there is no better feeling.

It was an amazing trip, I could genuinely write a book on that month. Missed Italia 90 but 02 was far better than 94, the locals didn't give a bollix about it in the states, we still had a ball but the locals in Japan were unbelievable and they were great in Korea as well. That was what made it. Just an unbelievable trip.

Far more fans than anyone expected.  Something like 13,000 in Yokohama for the Saudi game.  That was the only game we played with ticket issues.  Beforehand it was the only one we expected to have no ticket issues.

The FAI had tickets for anyone who applied iirc

I can't recall the total cost but not as bad as feared definitely.

Think i paid 800 quid for flight - 300/ 400 bullet train for 3 weeks tickets 300.

Booze / Entertainment - i fear to think as was only working full time a few months in Dublin then and in the run up to heading over had a few horrendous loses in the bookies - Wales drawing with Argentina the same night as we crushed the Russians in Lansdowne cost me my whole kitty at the time a few grand.

Took me few years to pay it all off but was worth every penny. Met a group of Kiwi teachers in Osaka that showed us a few very cheap nights out. Hoping to head back this year to Korea as my niece is teaching over there

Ahhhhhh there you go I missed this one , look said before would have loved to go but in the middle of building my house and had very little cash . Always remember Mrs Claret saying " no matter what the cost you should go " but just could not do it as we would have ran out of money as paying a mortgage and rent at the same time was a killer .

Its funny at the time I was in my early 20's and we never even thought it would be our last time to go to a world cup - Ireland qualified for 2 out of the last 3 so we assumed the good times would continue. Yes, we were innocent back then.

6 of us went as we were all going to Oz anyway so the flights were covered and we had been saving up for it. We even put back our trip 6 months just to go to Japan. Fast forward 10 years and lads are married with kids etc and priorities change - only 2 of that 6 made it to Poland. I remember one of the lads (3 kids) saying he couldn't believe we were going to Poland to drink for 2 weeks at our age LOL

Poland was great craic. But imagine what Poland would have been like if we were unbeaten in our group and got to the 2nd round - thats what Japan was like.....

Hopefully we made it to another world cup soon.

The EURO's are great and we should make plenty of them in the future but the WC are what every fan wants/has to experience.

Great trip with so many good memories. The football really helped too with no bad performance from the team. Off The pitch the 2 host nations really put on a good show and were very welcoming. I was working in New Zealand and had a friend living in Tokyo. 6 of us squeezed into his tiny flat. Remember arriving into the airport and immigration asked if I liked rioting. They really didn't know what to expect from the Irish fans. Great sing songs on the steps of Paddy Foleys and also on Hooker Hill in Seoul. Remember seeing Steve Staunton after the Spanish game at the bottom of hooker Hill with Jamaican pants , Cameroon jersey and big shamrock hat pissed and Kinsella trying to help him walk.

The 3 Japanese girls in Galway jerseys , Michael Flatley spotted by irish fans and everyone running over shouting at him to give us a wee dance. He jumped into his car a got his driver to get out of there pronto. So many other funny things that happened. Great trip

Anyone in the boozer with all the players after the Spain game?

We were in this local boozer just drowning our sorrows so to speak, when in pops Quinner..then Robbie....then.....within 30 minutes the whole team/squad were in there skulling pints. What was a very quiet boozer, with no other Irish fans in it but us became absolutely mobbed within seconds. FAI officials were trying, with limited success, to stop any more fans getting in. After fff'ing the FAI blazers out of it, one of my mates went round to the side fire exit and let all the fans who were stuck outside, in, to join in the craic.

However, disaster! - We had no f**ken camera with us!!  so the same mate went across the road, where there was a pharmacist which was closed. However there was a security guard on shift and my mate in his best Japanesey game of charades managed to portray to him and convince him to grab one of the disposable cameras he could see on a shelf and reluctantly he opened the door, took the ball of cash and gave us the camera. Legend!

Needless to say, pictures with all the lads, a young Robbie with two young ones draped all over him, Dunne, Kelly, Harte, Quinner, Killer, Kinsella, all of them - might even have been a young Claudine on Robbies arm - I haven't looked at them in years and them peroxides all look the same to me!

Absolutely gutting to lose that Spain game but a great way to end the night and the trip of a lifetime.

It was a pub called Buck Mulligans where the players were initially, we went off with them after that down to Hooker Hill on a crawl till around 3 the next afternoon, ended up being about 6 of us and 6 of them left, Quinn, Kelly, Dunne, Kinsella, possibly Given and one more. Camera had run out by then, was getting other lads to take pics and giving them my email but never saw any of them!

Met Shay Given's brother a few times on the trip, have a very funny story about that which I'll save for another time. Anyway, he sent an email home that got forwarded to me describing the early part of the night, I'll try and dig it out and post it up.

Subject: Suwon you boys in green!!!

Dear family, what a night. We cried our eyes out at the end. And within 2 hours were singing on stage with Damien Duff, Shay, Robbie Keane with the whole pub jumping. Long story. I'll try and write the whole episode beneath for Shay-Given.com and give youse a feeling of what it was like.

BearXX.

"Forget what you know. Replace all previous feelings of elation and disappintment. Last night, on a warm and floodlit night in Suwon, Korea, all my other previous football heart-stirrings were eclipsed by the greatest single perfromance by an Irish soccer side in history. That Shay once again was a legend throughout, only adds more to the sense of amazement that we were there.

As usual with all the World Cup games up until now, myself and Dad and Paul got to the ground early, so we could get 'OK SHAY' up in a prime slot. Shay had organsied for us to travel on an organised FAI coach with other player's families, but it wasn't leaving unitl 5.30pm, meaning in effect we wouldn't have been at the ground until close to 6.45pm. Too late. Instead, we took the metro with 6 other chums from Dublin (Chris Byrne + crew) and, bedecked with painted faces, inflatable leprechauns and anything else you care to think of that's green and gold, we got to Suwon for just after 5.30pm. Stared at all the way with incredulous faces by Koreans who, like the Japanese, had never seen anything quite like the Green army on tour.

'Go Irelando' is the chant we're been getting here in Korea. And to be fair to them they're as friendly as their Japanese co-hosts.

This time round, unlike the group games in Japan, the Irish fans were sited in pockets all around the stadium, meaning that there was no single en masse concentration. One big group behind each goal mouth and then scatterings all around teh satdium. It meant that because our numbers were diluted from the Japan games, singing en masse was more difficult. We were behind Shay's goal in the first half, high tier, nosebleed territory. Myself and Paul didn't see another Irish fan walk up the steep steps into our area until well after 7.30pm. And were delighted when they did. As it turns out, all of Stan (Steve) Staunton's family sat to our right. The family are the spit too. All game, when either Steve or Shay did anything special or a bit hairy, we would then turn and either nod to one another in approval or hiss through our teeth as if to Shay 'Our lad wouldn't normally do that you know.' David Staunton was who I mostly bantered with. And to be fair, I felt sorry for Stan (+ family) when the big lad was sub stituted early in the scond half. But it was certainly to do with his and Shay's clash (ironic isn't it, family doing battle in support high in the stands, the 2 brothers killing each other on the field). Later taht night, I was privvy to Shay and Stan laughing at each other about it. Stan said 'Jasus, you nearly put them 6 studs through me.' Shay threw back, 'Well, somebody was gonna get them, man.' Pair of characters.

Shay came out before the game, as always, and came over to where we had the flag. We could actually hear him when he shouted up asking where Dad was (outside having a beer with Chris + gang), and he then did this impression on the pitch of a drunk guy staggering around on the spot. It was the last laughing Paul and I did until much much later that night.

First half. The game was as nervous as I have ever been for any thing in my life. I kept clasping my hands tightly together white knuckling them, just to take some of the pressure out of my body. Praying for release from the anguish. In many ways their goal against us settled me, because I thought, well here we go again lads, underdogs and down on the evening. Nothing to lose now. Someone said to me last night that Ireland used to score early years ago and you'd be there heart attacking for 80 minutes saying 'Jasus, hold on lads'. Now we leave it until the dying minutes of a game before we score. The heart attacks are still there though. And I don't know which I prefer because my hair would be white with much more of this.

All throughout the game we would hear 'C'mon you boys in green' start far away to our left, but by the time the sound carried and we joined in, the fans there would be ahead of us, clapping hands or onto a new verse. We were spoiled by numbers in Niigata, Ibaraki and Yokohama, and also by the seat allocations over there, which I have to say in last night's case in Suwon, could've been done better.

Half time. Didn't move from the seat. Partly because I didn't need to join the hoards queing for a Charlie Nash, but moreso because I knew that what we were watching out there on that field was the writing and turning of history pages before our eyes. And I didn't want to miss a beat. I wasn't wrong.

Second half. Well youse all know what happened. My heart went out to Ian Harte with that penalty. How many of us could've stood up and taken it? Was buzzing for him (+ the country) when Robbie buried those skeltons with his spot-kick in the 88th. We celebrated so wildly when Duffer was brought down for ths first penalty that we just stood and held each other's sleeves when the second penaly was awarded. When it went in I thought my heart would burst with joy. I hugged and kissed every man-jack in the place.

The next half hour was the longest 30 minutes of my life. The clock up by the massive screen seemed to be stuck every time I looked up at it. The closer to 30 it got the more my mind was fearing the inevitable. The fact that we played the Spaniards off the pitch was the most frustrating thing.

Every time Duffer got the ball he weaved past them like ghosts and got the whole place to it's feet. I really believed we were going to win it on the field of play. I know the player's dod too. The Spaniards didn't know what had hit them and were time wasting with death-row desperation. In the end, after 2 whistles, we were eerily reminded of Genoa 12 years ago, with Shay replacing Packie as the guardian of our goal. And to be honest, I did not expect us to lose. I felt that this was the hour of Shay's calling and if any man could stop the Spaniards, he could. Of that, I am not wrong. But fate was not be on his side.

I shook hands with Dave Staunton and forced myself to watch. I'd alreday given the camcorder to this Korean guy behind us to tape the goalmouth because my hands were shaking like leaves. I put them behind my head and, elbows forward, prayed for the big lad.

The rest is history. It just wasn't meant to be for us. Or for Shay. But he is a legend in our eyes, and now I hope, the rest of the world.

When Shay, in his walk around the Irish fans at the end, came over to where we were and blew us kisses and waves, the emotion got too much. After he had walked down the tunnel, I tried to untie the flag from its moorings but could barely see my hands or the knots because of the tears blinding me. We had just welled up for him and knew that in his heart he was gutted. Knowing Shay he would also have been particulary annoyed with their last penalty, a scuffed attemot that took a cruel bounce over his legs. Now here's a thing you woudln't see happen at Landsdowne, our famous . . erm . . Irish soccer stadium. Once I had untied the flag and stood up again preparing to leave, a Korean official beside me was in tears too. Saddened by seeing our tears. Amazing. I shook his hand and thanked him. Then we turned our backs on Suwon, never to see it again except for video footage and documentaries.

In a short speech given afterwards in the 2nd floor of the Westin Chosin Hotel, where a reception dinner had been laid on for the lads, the new Minister for Sport summed it up very well. I'm paraphrasing here, but his words were that all across Ireland there were young boys glued to their television sets tonight, watching their heroes in Suwon, and although it might take 10 years from now, some of them too would make this elite select, and try and emultate what was tonight, the single most gallant and brave performace by an Irish team ever. We stood and applauded.

Michael Flatley was in attendance and so, without shame, I got him to sign a napkin for Elaine. Thanking him afterwards he said, 'No thank you, it was real nice of you to ask.' A true gentleman. Got one signed for Kells (Alan Kelly) too and have determined that I'll always remind him of it. Also heard that U2 had sent a message of good luck to the team before the game. The message on it was 'The Quinn is dead. Long live the Quinn'. Legends.

We walked down with the team into the bart of the Westin Chosin where they got the deserved heroes welcome. I think the lads began to settle a bit after this when they realised just what they'd achieved overall. We then all headed to this Irish Bar called Buck Mulligans. The place was so hot you'd have been inconspicous in a towel and flip-flops. But the craic was mighty. We weren't in there 1/2 an hour when Kells got on the drumns (the lad can play) and Robbie Keane, Shay, Duffer and Mattie Holland all sang songs. I don't think the Irish crowd could believe their eyes. Can you imagine the English players doing the same? It felt liek a fitting thanjk-you to the support who had come so far.

At one point, just after the boys had finished a Westlife tune, Kells started to drum the into for U2's 'Bloody Sunday'. He called to me 'C'mon Liam' and so I grabbed a mike and started to sing the guitar bit: 'Ner Ner Ner Ner, Ner Ner Ner Ner . . .' etc. The whole place got it. And joined in. I can't believe the news today. I can't close my eyes and make it go away.

I said to Mark Kinsella earlier that these moments, when you've left your camera in the hotel, are like running out of film just as the Loch Ness monster surfaces or a Yeti walks by. But believe me. This happened.

Next thing you know, Shay has swapped his shirt for Austin Daly's Dun Na nGall GAA shirt and he's kissing the crest, standing on top of a table. The place went buck mad. Shay was sweating so hard (he would sweat like a recehorse at the best of times) that the droplets of sweat were tumbling out of the sleeves of the Donegal top. I had to move my lager a couple of times.

We had an amazing night with the team and the fans. And one that I'll never forget. And I think left us all walking away from the evening with happiness in our hearts over the incaulable success of this team in World Cup Korea/Japan 2002, rather than some disappoinemt on the evening that I'm sure the whole country has alreday put behind them. A heroes welcome awaits on the Emerald Isle."

Thanks D69 - Brilliant read that from Shays brother. Really brings the memories of that night back.

We had got the boat across from Japan to Korea and I think only arrived the day before the game, so didn't really have our bearings of the city. I'm not sure whether it was Buck Mulligans (I certainly don't remember thinking it was an Irish pub) or whether we were actually on Hooker Hill (sounds more likely to be honest!Smile) all I remember is that we were pretty much the only ones in there, when the boys all arrived...very quickly followed by flocks of Irish.....So on reading your post and the email above...I'm guessing it was the latter.

Quinn was the first one in and we were chatting to him for 5 or 10 minutes before the rest of the team started to pour in. Having played with Man City, Quinner knew (and had often frequented) many of the Irish pubs and clubs in Manchester, so it was great chewing the fat with him - He's always been a gent whenever I've met him and that night was no different.

As Shays brothers says, the lads were certainly on form, all up on tables, Gary Kelly was orchestrating a few sing songs. Dunner was wearing a Korean 'We are the Reds' T-Shirt which was like a tattoo it was that tight on him!!!

I'm gonna have to dig out some pics and post them up

Sounds like it was later in the night or morning alright! The T shirt said 'Be the Reds!', they were everywhere, still have one at home. Kelly was a legend that night to be fair as was Quinn, absolute gents. I have a pic at home of me and Shay up on a table in Buck Mulligans singing and a couple with Staunton, Quinn and Alan Kelly but would love to see the ones other lads took of me with the rest, very unlikely I will though!

I think I know the pub you are talking about junior. I think there was a pool table just outside it (or just inside the door). It was on the right as you go up hooker hill. We were in team hotel and Buck Mulligans and had got a taxi after that and jumped out when spotted Stan and Gary Kelly iirc on the street.

From memory Quinner had on 3/4 lengths (possibly bermuda's) and we had a good rendition of Niall quints disco pants.

After that pub everyone wen to a bar up the top of the hill on the left hand side where we drank to the morning again with the team (no idea of its name). In our round at one point were Dunner and a polluted Mark Kinsella who said he would stab Roy Keane the next time he saw him!!!

At one point I thought I had convinced Quinn to stay on for one more campaign but he kept telling me that we would be fine as his replacement was ready to step in.... Richie Saddlier! I sh*t you not!!

My camera disappeared in Yokohama so have no photos at all from then on.

Anyone with snaps it'd be great if could post them.

Yeah, now I think about it a bit more, it was a bit of seedy area alright! and the pub was on a bit of a hill - haha... there is the clue - definitely must have been hooker hill - never even heard of that place till these posts but its the sleezy type of joints that the degenerates I knock about with like to head for! well its more a case of auto pilot I think

4 of us travelled over, and one of the lads was wrecked tired after the game and the 2 1/2 week session we had had at that stage and said he was going to call it a night. The other 3 of us stayed out and 15 minutes later in walks the team.....He still can't believe that was the one night that anyone went home early and he missed all the craic with the team.SmileSmile

That was definitely it, pool table was just inside the door.

After the pub at the top a few of us went down the hill and ended up in some first floor restaurant that was serving drink. The last 4 to leave were Quinn, Kelly, Dunne and Kinsella. Kinsella was absolutely polluted as you say. He was sitting in a corner with one of the lads playing some drinking game where the forfeit involved taking off an item of clothing. Bit odd as there were no birds present but that's what it was. Anyway, I'm at the table with Kelly and Quinn and Dunne is wandering around. Next thing Dunne comes over and says "C'mon lads, we better get Mark out of hete'. I look around and Kinsella has just lost the last round of the game and stumbles over to the huge plate glass window in his jocks which he proceeds to drop leaving himself standing there at the window with the banger hanging out and his jocks round his ankles!

So they head off but before they go Kelly puts his hand in his pocket, throws a load of notes of the table and says 'Have another couple on us, lads'. Nice touch, he didn't have to do it. I stumbled back to where I was staying 30 mins later and stayed in bed till the following morning, had been out since before noon the previous day so had been on it for about 27 hours by then. Went out the Tuesday and heard that the players had been back around Hooker Hill around 6 on the Monday evening which was less than 4 hours after they left us, was gutted to miss round 2 but no way could I have made it. Most of them were slaughtered that night but Quinn and Kelly had some stamina for the drink, not a bother on either of them. One other thing I remember was that Duff was too gutted to go out and just went to bed after the team's post game meal. Always loved his leaba that fella!

Just as well it was on the first floor and not the ground floor, it was 2.30 in the afternoon on a Monday! Not sure how the locals would have reacted!

Funny thing about the camera phones, European mobiles wouldn't work over there even on roaming as they were on a more advanced network than us. You could rent phones and some people did but we didn't bother so you had to make proper arrangements with people. Anyway, before the Germany game we were up in the fan zone as there were no boozers in the area, it was the middle of nowhere. Usual things going on with lads getting the flags out and asking other fans to take pictures and passing their cameras to them. I'm walking up to the bar and an Irish lad stops me and asks will I take a picture of him and his mates with their flag. I says of course and next thing he hands me his rented phone! I ask "What the fcuk do you want me to do with this, phone it in?" "No" he says, "You won't believe this, there's a camera on the phone!!". Seems ridiculous now but we were gobsmacked at the time! If you think back, our phone screens were still generally green with black text back then. Fcuk knows where their technology is at now!

Yeah, I remember having one of those bricks with the green screens around that time, the only other real  'app' I remember them having was a game called Snake LOL

Another wee story....

After the Saudi game, my mate who had been badly sun burnt in Okinawa when we visited there for a few days (Home of Mr miyagi from Karate Kid...another story for another time..) was really struggling to walk and his leg had become blistered and well basically looked like it was going to fall off......So at the full time whistle and after the celebrations we headed back up to the concourse and found some medics.

Efficient as ever, they quickly located a stretcher on wheels and lay him down and brought us to a lift to bring him down to the first aid room. The lift opened up and who was in there only Ron Atkinson and John Barnes who had been doing some media work on the game. We all squeezed in, 4 of us, 2 medics, a stretcher plus Barnes and Big Ron. Barnes had not long been sacked by Celtic - so we gave him a bit of a ribbing and he took it all in good spirits. It wouldn't be long before Atkinson would get sacked for racist comments regarding Desailly.

Many think Atkinson was just a victim of his era and to my knowledge I think a number of black players came out in his defence. I think Big Ron was in charge when Laurie Cunningham and Cyril Regis first played for WBA. Barnes also cites the colour of his skin as being a reason for not getting any managerial opportunities since Celtic. Looking back now, all of us stood in that cramped lift, it all seems a bit surreal ... Anyway, the pair of them were very good sports and gave my mate on the stretcher a good bit of stick - they were delighted with Irelands progression to the knockout stages.

I’m dying to watch this, the original links been blocked by FIFA. Have the DVD but it’s scratched to bits, does anyone have a link to it or could it be re-uploaded? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
