The Belgian jersey is the giveaway, they wore that in 82.
Its the opening match. Argentina holders, Belgians won 1-0.

Im fairly sure that the Belgian pic is misleading. Something like the players are lined up on the edge of the area to defend a free kick and the ball dropped to Maradona when it headed away. Maybe Gary or Tribal will be able to confirm? Sorry to spoil the fun

This shows the moment the photo was taken. As you said it was after a free kick when the wall broke up. 1 minute and 11 seconds in.

Yes there is a mix up here of years...this pic is from 82, They also played them in 86 when Diego took on and went past 5 Belgian defenders, a better finish and run then the one against engerland...class player

That's mad. Never knew that. So actually, he only had one defender to beat to be through on goal LOL

The new Maradona documentary is f**king brilliant. Get to the cinema and see it ASAP. If you value our relationship, you’ll do it this weekend or I’m never speaking to you again. That’s whats at stake here.

I might have to wait until next week now. Seem to be only showing it twice a day when they do show it and the times are sh*te.  Like 9am or 11pm.   They have it around 8pm next Wednesday.  The show some amount of sh*te.  Toy Story must be on 20 times a day.

A lot of it has been closed for years as it fell into disrepair, they added a third tier for the World Cup along with the roof, that tier has been completely closed off for an awful long time and remains closed now even after the renovations, capacity down to only about 50k now.

Italia 90 really came at the wrong time for Italian football facility wise, government and councils spent millions on big concrete stadiums, only for a few years later all new stadiums started adding the corporate element into it, Italian stadiums just got left behind

Have to disagree with you there, on sheer talent alone Messi would have been able to adapt but there is absolutely no way he would be scoring 30/40+ goals every season mind.

The standard of defenders at the highest level throughout the 80's,90's & the early 00's were light years above the dross that's currently floating around.

For me anyway there is absolutely no question that Maradona was the best player to ever play the game, it was a real injustice that he didn't get selected for the 1978 squad despite his young age.

If you look at the top scorers of each season in the 80's, only 2 players managed over 20 goals (20 & 22). Shows how difficult it was to score in that league. Maradona was top scorer with 15 goals one season.

I just googled the 86/87 table the year Napoli won the league, it's fair to say the effect of Catenaccio was still at the forefront for many sides with no team in the top 6 conceding more than 27 goals in a 30 game league.

Goals scored were also extremely hard to come by as you rightly pointed out, which makes it all the more impressive.

Football needs more characters like him, whatever about his genius on the pitch.

As his personal trainer, Fernando Signorini, says of his friend: “Diego has had a life that is both tremendous, and terrible.” Both are given equally memorable treatment by Kapadia and as the credits roll, the director gives you the choice of how you want to remember him - as the troubled, flawed, person who was good at football, or the transcendent No. 10 who in the eyes of some Argentines can never do wrong. It’s a tough decision.

great watch last night.like was said I couldn’t believe some of the tackles he took...especially in the early days of his time at Napoli...I just couldn’t see Messi trive in that type of game, some defenders nowadays seem to have too much respect to even tackle Messi now.those lads back then would of cut him in half.what comes across last night is how poorly Napoli treated him in the end..essentially he was shafted by the mafia who controlled the club..you can’t help but pity him in some of the scenes last night.

They only recently put in new seats for the first time.  It was exact same as Italia 90 until a year or so ago

I love going to games in Italy because there's no corporate areas. In the UK they have avacados and popcorn, in Italy they have flares and smoke canisters.

The scene after they win the World Cup and are returning to Buenos Aires is so claustrophobic, barely has room to breathe. Dealing with that since his mid-to-late teens, no wonder he's ended up like he has.

It's pure showmanship, but I love the stare down from the Argies during GSTQ in that game in '86.

Would be my preference too, but it's one of the reasons why Italian football fell behind.

Look at Juve now, first Serie A team to own their own ground

Always loved Maradona. Mainly due to the fact that I was young enough when the 82 and 86 world cups were on. Different era and a time when world cups meant seeing players you have never heard of before. Few of us knew anything about Brazil in 82 until they played their first game of the tournament. Same with most teams bar England Scotland etc
I would still have Maradona ahead of Messi for his impact and what he achieved.

David Narey actually scored a screamer for Scotland against Brazil in '82 which reddlad might be thinking of. It just annoyed them and they rarttled in four after.

Jimmy Hill called it a toe-poke, which was the main reason for his hatred from those north of the wall and the questioning of his sexuality.

Maradona over Messi all day long, both all time greats and by far the best of their generations......but Maradona had that extra law of attraction element, an explosive character......Messi to be quite blunt is a bit bland

When you take into account the pressure he was under to perform, all the time, it has to be Diego. Not to mention playing at that level with a cocaine problem. Phenomenal.

There's no way either would have survived at the elite level in the time of the other. Messi would have been kicked out of the game before leaving Argentina and Maradona would have ended up like Antonio Cassano (that's an exaggeration but not much tbh). At best, Maradona might have ended up like Neymar but he probably wouldn't have reached that level with his issues.

I disagree regarding Maradona; the issues were only there due to the pressure to perform. Maradona, at a modern day club like Barcelona is today,  wouldn’t have had the same responsibilities, or felt them. That isn’t to say there isn’t a pressure to perform, but there is everything in place to make it the only pressure. There is an argument that the boredom may have driven a man of his personality mad, but I’m not sure that side of his personality would have been allowed to develop.

Brilliant documentary but I'm a bit disappointed how it ended after playing days in Italy. Thought there might've been a bit more to cover the next few years (U.S. world cup when he was expelled maybe?)

I always wished I was older during Euro 88/Italia 90 when you could truly appreciate how big it was for the country when our football team did well but after watching that documentary, it would've been unbelievable to be from Naples and living there at the time when Maradona came. The racist chants and banners the northern Italian fans had towards the Neapolitan's were fairly vicious.
