He's still only 21. He scored for Shrewsbury against Arsenal a few years ago. He scored another hat trick for the U-21's against Liechtenstein.

Well done James Clap

A hat trick against a Premier League club will do his confidence the world of good.

Went to shewsbury scored 20 odd goals in season and a half.

Joined swindon.

3 goals for the under21s I think.

Every chance he'll get a move to the Championship with Swindon in May. Di Canio has them motoring.

Obafemi, Keane, Robinson and Walters are out, and he's been in great form this season, so he must be in with a fair old chance, especially with Mick having taken the opportunity to go and see him.

It'll be interesting to see how he gets on in the Championship next season if, as seems likely, Luton go up.

I'd be pretty much guaranteed that he will be in the squad. We're playing against Gibraltar and Georgia. I think he can score against those teams if called upon. The Danish and Swiss defence might be a different thing altogether but I would have no concern for the upcoming fixtures.

James Collins hopefully a late developer like Grant Holt/Rickie Lambert. Neither stepped up to championship level til late 20s, hopefully Collins steps up next season and becomes option for next few years. Not a lot of Irish strikers playing or scoring regularly at championship level never mind premier league level.

No harm in calling him up, banging in the goals in League One. Would prefer to see him included to Will Keane anyway. Next week who are the strikers we would expect to see included? Long, Maguire, McGoldrick and Collins maybe?

Was long dropped from southampton squad today or is he injured? No sign of him.

Posted By: PaddyDaCulchie
Date Posted: 02 Mar 2019 at 6:03pm
Long should be dropped. He needs move to club where he can get regular starts upfront and up his scoring record. McGoldrick has to be called up, only striker scoring regularly in top 2 divisions. Walters in finished. 6 league games and zero goals in 18 months. Maguire and O'Brien mostly played on wing, Will Keane has scored more goals than Maguire this season. Need Bamford to declare but think he will hold out to see what happens with Leeds in premier league next year and if south gate calls him up.

McGoldrick, Collins, Maguire, Keane and Long I think will be called up whether they all deserve the call up is debatable.

Mick McCarthy reign is nothing about progress. It's about steadying the ship and qualifying us for Euro 2020.

Progress hopefully will come under Stephen Kenny. to be honest I don't think there's going to be anything comparable between McCarthy and kenny's reign from players to playing style.

I’d be willing to bet that Collins will get more game time this campaign than any other of the debuts last night. He is essentially the player McCarthy has been looking for: 6ft 2, strong in the air, able to hold the ball up and get on the end of a cross. McCarthy was practically yanking himself off when Collins was fouling their centre half yesterday

Probably McGoldrick, Maguire / Long (if he gets game time), and Collins

With the likes of Collins available, and the potential for Obafemi and Parrott to come through the ranks, it’s hard to see Hogan and Maguire making squads as easy as they have been. The ball rolling down the line from Hogan’s follow up yesterday, sums it up.

Still the most prolific player we have available playing the top two divisions (Doherty is still top Premier scorer with a meagre four goals I believe) and only one to reach double figures. So still has to be an option, though Long and Mcgoldrick offer a lot more all round contribution and Connolly, Idah, Obafemi, Parrot etc have the future potential on their side.
No worse an option than Hogan though

On form alone you are right. I think we all want to see a younger player come on before March, develop and score goals as that will be the longer term solution.

Idah hasn't done enough for me to include him. Himself and Connolly would cause defenders problems you would think. We were unlucky to have been starved of Connolly for the the autumn internationals.

How many Irishmen have scored a hat-trick for their clubs?

Keane, Walters, Leon Best and Stokes.

If parrott scored a hat-trick yesterday the view would be very different.

For me Collins is our only player scoring goals at a high level. We can't expect ireland to score when you look at the players who are not scoring

Connolly, idah, Robinson, parrott, mcclean, odowda are all in contention for the front three of ireland. All play under different managers that cant seem to get them to score, yet, when they play for ireland we expect Kenny to turn them into goalscorers.

Loads.

Kevin Doyle scored two, Daryl Murphy scored one, Adam Rooney scored one, Alan Lee scored one, Conor Hourihane scored one and Wes Hoolahan scored one at Championship level.

There's probably more.

To me, its a PR issue with the fans, as far as Collins is concerned. Basically, he is a lad in his early thirties, who spent the guts of his career in the lower leagues, before moving to a club that has moved through the divisions to become a Championship team (but in recent memory, they were a non-league club). He was potentially the victim of the system employed in the last days of the MM era, where he was cut adrift up top, and was in the team in Switzerland, which was the poorest night under the MM era. In combination, this makes it difficult for fans to take him on as a potential front man in an international sense. This would be different if he was three years younger and doing the same for Boro, Blackburn or Brentford.

The difficulty is, our greatest concern is up top. We have just lost our front man to retirement, the natural alternative (Long) is chronically out of form. After that you are either shoehorning a wide player like Connolly or Robinson in up top, relying on the likes of Parrott, or Idah to come good, or else looking at players like Sean Maguire who is neither as prolific or as involved in a Championship team as Collins is. I suspect the desire for Ronan Curtis would even be more dubious.

Collins ticks a number of key boxes.
