the thing is cahill and the oz commentators probably pronounce it that way even though its an irish name and originally pronounced our way

That's the thing, Tim Cahill pronounces his name that way. Ronnie Moran used to pronounce his MorANN, Liam and Noel pronounce the second g in Gallagher. So if people pronounce their own name that way, what do you do? Tell them they're doing it wrong?

that d be awful funny if you met liam gallagher and politely told him they cannot pronounce their own name .i could imagine liam using an oscar wilde quip to counteract your comment.....or more than likely tell ya to fcuk off

Tim CaHILL pronounces it like that.

The Darren O'Dea(day) pronouncing is actually pretty widespread. They pronounce it O'Day in the States as well as in Oz.

Another one is Fahey, or Farhey as they say over there.

On the Tipperary hurling team over the past 10/15 years there have been a good few Cahill's playing , you don't pronounce them like "Kayhill" around there!

In Australia it's pronounced Kahil, if you were talking to Timmy and said Cahill -he'd say it's actually Kahill.

who is right?

My dad said he saw an interview with Lucas Neill and he said Timmy Cahill with the Irish pronunciation. He's also of Irish ancestory.

Always annoyed me when English commentators say McGrath with the emphasis on the "th"

Theres a lot of lazyness and arrogance from English commentators regarding Irish names.

eg Doherty they either put a 'c' in it or say doe erty
Fahey they normally say far-hee or sometimes fay.
Mahon is always mahn or ma-hone.

They seem to make an effort with other foreigners though, I've never heard Thierry Henry called Terry Henry (where you pronounce the H)

Also Owen Coyle is always described as Scottish even though he played admittedly only once for Ireland, and he has several times in interviews mentioned the fact that his parents are from donegal.

Charlie Hockey
Sillian Sheridan
Mark KinSELLA.

The Brits don't even try with names that are not English.  It's what makes them loveable really.

In fairness to the British commentators they could counteract us and tell us to pronounce our h's in words such as, thick, thirty, three etc. So I wouldnt hold it against them there.

Same way I'd say David Veeya instead of Day-vid Villa.

What does annoy me is Kenny Cunningham calling Xabi Alonso, Xavier Alonso.

And David Silva being called Da Silva.

Eh,not having a go at a fellow Mayo man but what you've described above is a person Saying Ronan O Gara in an English accent. If you were to mention Lord Finchley St John Smithe would you put on an English accent while saying it? Would sound fairly strange!
In fact can you imagine if a commentator did this for a premiership game with all the different nationalities, would sound hilarious!

you re right its more of an english accent dragging the aww out of the word as opposed to not pronkuncing it properly.actually the d4 accent does the same but it sounds ten times more annoying " O Gaawra and the goys" .such twats.id rather have a buffer mayo accent (mine isnt that strong as im from the urban metropolis of westport ) but that fcukin d4 accent gets on my tits.one lad in college wasnt even from the d4 area and he was putting the accent on

Your right about about the kane thing but its just another excuse to have a go at the english.it really doesnt bother me that much.we re always giving off about them whether its their colonial past, sky sports coverage, john terry or their team so its another thing to throw into the mix.
What is stupid though is they can pronounce difficult names of players of different countries at world cups but because they speak the same language as us they assume they re saying the names properly.its just them being harmlessly ignorant.its not a diplomatic crisis or anything, its funny to point it out
