Tour De France like the Olympics for me, is totally discredited now cos of the doping.  Here's a great piece from Kimmage on Sunday about a reformed doper, David Millar........enjoy.

Good article, It amazes me that for years people in Britain and Ireland refused to believe that their sportsmen and women could be doing drugs to enhance performance, believing that East Germany or China was the place that sort of thing happened, well guess it happens everywhere and in many sports, when it comes to events like the Tour de France asking cyclists to climb mountains on a bike that most people would struggle to walk up slowly what do we really expect, the English rider Tom Simpson died in 1967 on a stage and the post mortom found a combination of amphetamines and alcohol caused his death, so just how long have drugs played a part in the tour, sure it went on long before 1967 as well.

Sure even the Horse that won an Olympic Medal ( Ireland's only medal) at last olympics was found out to be a dope fiend in showjumping and had it taken away

Thanks alot Count for the offer, I'd be very interested in that alright.  Good point Tash, we all got on our high horse when Michelle Smith was being accused and it seems the Yanks were right and Kimmage and David Walsh were abused for asking questions about Smith.  Kimmage is outstanding alright.  Still find it hard to imagine a horse injecting itself though......Confused

He was one of our greatest sportsmen ever and never tested positive for any substance. There was allegation he took banned substance in 1993  which was his last year as a professional. He was consistently one of the best cyclists in the world throughout the 80's, he wasnt someone who came from nowhere and suddenly had that great 1987 year that he had. True cycling has been badly tarnished over last 10 years ( as have many other sports, dont forget ). Its just annoying listening to some people sometimes who have little or no interest in the sport and a drug scandal comes along and suddenly they are experts. Cycling is one of most gruelling sports in world and as someone said to me once, even if some of em are on drugs its still one of toughest sports around. Takes me back to a well written article in a recent YBIG about in which the writer describes how cynical and begrudging as a nation we can be. Roche was one of our greats, lets celebrate it not , put it down.
